The Diamondback owes its name to the Maryland terrapin and not the similarly titled venomous snake. Still, plenty of folks meet this cocktail expecting a bite — and no wonder. It's stirred, complex, and can end up being an extremely boozy mix of rye, apple brandy, and Chartreuse. Joining us to explore the drink is Pennsylvania-based Patrick Jennings, the bar manager at Philadelphia's Andra Hem. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. 2. Stir until well chilled and strain into a chilled coupe glass. 3. Garnish with brandied cherry.

Courtesy of the illustrious David T. Smith, author of The Gin Dictionary, Disco Cocktails, and other fine bibulous publications, I and a group of friends were treated to a rare Chartreuse tasting after we had wrapped up all of our work at the American Distilling Institute's annual conference and trade show this past August in Baltimore, MD. Our casual panel of tasters included: Eric Zandona, author of The Tequila Dictionary and The Bourbon Bible Sara Sergent, botanical savant and owner of Alpine Distilling in Park City, Utah Joe Barber of Stargazey Spirits and The Wrecking Coast Distillery in the UK And Reece Sims, creator of Flavour Camp Here's a (hopefully) somewhat complete list of the stuff we tasted, which may explain our silliness toward the end: The standard Green Chartreuse and Yellow Chartreuse - but these were both taken from the soleras or “infinity bottles” of David T. Smith, so they felt a bit more special Liqueur d'Elixir - A tribute to one of the early proto-variants of Green Chartreuse - this is essentially a half-step between the elixir vegetal and Green Chartreuse 9iere Centennaire - A tribute to the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Order of St. Bruno (also known as the Carthusians) Chartreuse Verte VEP (that's the fancy green Chartreuse) A bottling by the French Order of master Sommeliers from 2018 - which is a small batch, custom variant of Yellow Chartreuse Tarragona, which is another Chartreuse recipe, celebrating either Tarragon (the herb) or the formulation that the monks made when they were in exile in Spain for a couple decades in the early 20th century Three variants of Chartreuse Genepy (the traditional, intense, and abrupt) And finally, a lovely Florio Amaro bottled in the 1970s, provided by yours truly. Other topics we discuss include: The Carthusian monk documentary entitled Into Great Silence The mythical “beast of Gevaudan” that ravaged the French countryside once upon a time The taxonomy of the Artemisia botanical family A whole bunch of strong cocktail-related opinions about Chartreuse and genepy, And much, much more

In Episode 46, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh spend a lot of time talking about AI, but that still, as always, begins with the whiskey. Episode page We both asked ChatGPT to consider all our ingredients for making a whiskey-based cocktail, and to invent an original recipe. Jamie's is called The Bourbon Harmony, although there was a lot in there to try to reach harmony, and Mark's was called the Spiced Cherry Rye Cocktail. The verdict for both drinks was that they were good, but probably wouldn't be made a second time. We had slightly different tactics in prompting ChatGPT to generate our recipes, which we discussed. We then spent a little time recognizing the passing of Don Petersen, former CEO of Ford in the late 1980s. Peterson was very different from an automotive CEO at the time, disrupting many practices whose time had come. Most notably, he brought in Dr. Deming to help influence the transformation. The discussion then turned into a deeper dive into how a lean thinker might look at artificial intelligence, machine learning, and more. This explored governance of AI, having good standard work and workflow design around AI usage, lessons of effective delegation while treating AI like an employee, when to use it, and even a few tips and tricks along the way. We saved the discussion of whether AI will be the end of humanity for when we might have a stronger cocktail. Have AI design your new cocktail, make it yourself since AI can't do that, and sit down for this interesting discussion. We're going to recognize St. Patrick's Day with some Irish cinema, not watching some shit movie like Leprechaun 2 or something. Irish/English Dictionary Poitín - Moonshine. Stovetop distillery. Don't worry about it. It's just for the cows. Craic - Merry-making, revelry Garda(i) - Police Officer(s) Some projectile from space crashes into the ocean off the coast of Ireland. Because of the scarcity of Chartreuse, Derek Reno with Echo Spirits has gone full mad scientist by creating his own version of Green Chartreuse. It's absolutely delicious… and it's damn close to the original.
Uncle Brad discovered a drink while skiing in the French Alps, Vert Chaud (or Hot Green) and Cocolat au Rhum (Chocolate with Rum). It turns out, Chocolate and Chartreuse were meant to be together, and they never knew it. And so is chocolate and rum BTW. We understand that Chartreuse is in short supply, but if you stick around for the tips we'll give you alternatives that can get you close. The history on this one is anyone's guess, but Uncle Brad has a theory that he'll unfold in the history section. This is going to be your new favorite warm up beverage after a cold day outside. Trust and believe! Vert Chaud In a 10oz mug add 2oz Green Chartreuse* 6oz of creamy hot chocolate (recipe below) (stir) Layer 2oz of wet whipped cream by pouring the whipped cream over spoon into your drink Garnish with dusting of cocoa powders *IF YOU DON'T HAVE Chartreuse, you can use rum. In this case I used a split base of 1oz. Demerara 151 (any dark overproof will do) and an aged Martinique Rhum Agricole. But you can play with any aged rums. I chose the aforementioned because I wanted something French, and something strong to recreate the spirit forward taste of Chartreuse. Hot Chocolate Recipe 3.5 cups whole milk 0.5 cups heavy cream Go to the baking aisle to find the next 4oz bittersweet chocolate (you can use a bar or chips, which are less work) 4oz semisweet chocolate (you can use a bar or chips, which are less work) 2 Tbsp dutch processed cocoa powder (yes, that's really a thing) 2 Tsp cornstarch 1 Tsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp Sugar (optional, it's great without it) In sauce pan add Milk, cream, cornstarch, vanilla, cocoa powder and mix over medium low heat Whist constantly so no lumps and skin doesn't form on top of the milk When bubbles form on sides and the mixture is starting to steam, remove from heat Add bittersweet and semisweet chips to the pan and stir until fully melted Add sugar if you feel you'd like it sweeter and mix until dissolved Pour into heat safe container so you can easily pour into your mug. Store extra in fridge and reheat gently. Prospector In mixing glass add: 1.5 oz Cognac 0.5 oz white creme de cacao 0.5 oz Green Chartreuse 0.5 oz Cointreau Stir until chilled (about 20 - 30 seconds) Strain over ice in rocks glass. Garnish with twist of lemon (extra points for expressing the oils over the drink) TIP: Alternatives to Chartreuse The Art of Drinking IG: @theartofdrinkingpodcast Jules IG: @join_jules TikTok: @join_jules Website: joinjules.com Brad IG: @favorite_uncle_brad This is a Redd Rock Music Podcast IG: @reddrockmusic www.reddrockmusic.com Learn more about your ad choices. The color chartreuse has a bit of a boozy background. It was named after a French liqueur called “chartreuse” which has a greenish-yellow hue. The liqueur was first produced in 1605 by the Carthusian monks of France. François Hannibal d'Estrées discovered a secret recipe that allegedly helped its consumers ‘live a long life.' He brought the recipe to Monks near Paris, who ultimately sent it down to La Grande Chartreuse abbey. The recipe was eventually tested in 1737, and about 60 years later, was tweaked to create Green Chartreuse. This new and improved Chartreuse boasted a more mild flavor profile and is the recipe still used today. 75 years later, Frère Bruno Jacquet crafted another tweaked version of the recipe, which became the Yellow Chartreuse that we know and love today. It takes 130 botanicals macerating for eight hours in copper to create Green Chartreuse. The final product's ABV? 55% - and it's flavor lands herbal/slightly medicinal on the palate. On the contrary, Yellow Chartreuse is a bit lower in alcohol (40% ABV) and leans sweeter on the flavor profile. Green Chartreuse gets its color from chlorophyll, whereas Yellow Chartreuse gets its pigment from saffron. Both colors are naturally occurring, but the steps to this beverages outcome are nothing short of extraordinary. Having your own clothing manufactured is a lot like brewing, the perfect chartreuse liqueur. In my years of running both a fashion design incubator and small batch manufacturer, I've come to find three common themes among the issues new fashion designers experience. This episode reaches deep into those issues and provides two different examples of each three.Three mistakes new fashion designers often make during manufacturing:Manufacturing too many colorways, or contrast stitching details.Manufacturing too many designs at a time, or too much product in generalSigning a manufacturing contract before the design is sale-ready (stitching, fit, supplies)Interested in learning from Krystal? So, grab a cup and buckle up because we're racing to the bottom of the glass! Smoked Rose Cocktail Ingredients For the Rosemary Syrup: 1 cup water 1 cup sugar 3 tablespoons rosemary For the Cocktail: 1 sprig of dried rosemary 2 ounces Scotch whisky 1/2 ounce Green Chartreuse liqueur [we don't have access to that so we used Vermouth] 1/4 ounce rosemary syrup Steps to Make It Make the Rosemary Syrup Gather the ingredients. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a slow boil. Add the sugar and stir until it's entirely dissolved. Reduce the heat, add the rosemary, and cover the pan. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the syrup to cool completely, keeping it covered. Strain out the rosemary and bottle the flavored syrup in a glass jar with a tight seal. It should be refrigerated and will keep for about 2 weeks. Make the Smoked Rose Cocktail Smoke a coupe glass to flavor the inside: Light the dried rosemary sprig on fire, extinguish the flame, and place it inside the glass. In a mixing glass filled with ice, pour the scotch, Green Chartreuse, and rosemary syrup. Stir well. Strain into the smoked glass. Serve and enjoy. https://www.thespruceeats.com/smoked-rose-cocktail-recipe-761384

Welcome back to MM&T! On S2E10, “The Inheritance,” Kristina and Elias have recovered from the previous two-parter. Elias finally gets to use the pod to justify buying one of his bar cart “white whales” Green Chartreuse, as the two mix prohibition-era Last Word cocktails (drink lesson at 1:30). Then they read a statement from their DE correspondent, debate which rat pack member is least fit for California, and try to figure out what kind of baby deserves anything…anything from Tiffany’s. Plus, they play some terrible games and Kristina makes a startling admission (Episode recap / discussion at 5:05) https://www.instagram.com/madmenandtonic https://madmen.fandom.com/wiki/The_Inheritance https://madmen.fandom.com/wiki/The_Inheritance https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1118052/ https://www.amazon.com/Mad-Men-Carousel-Complete-Companion/dp/1419720635 (Mad Men Carousel by Matthew Zoller Seitz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Word_(cocktail) http://www.barnotes.co/recipes/last-will-testament https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Athletic_Club https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Bradbury https://www.chartreuse.fr/en/produits/green-chartreuse/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twilight_Zone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Stanwyck https://www.afi.com/afis-100-years-100-stars/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rear_Window https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contagion_(2011_film) https://www.cityofrehoboth.com/ https://www.williampenninn.com/about/ https://snccdigital.org/category/timeline/1962-1965/ https://www.crf-usa.org/black-history-month/a-brief-history-of-jim-crow https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2013/03/07/173736882/how-did-strom-thurmond-last-through-his-24-hour-filibuster https://naacp.org/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rope_(film) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jardiniere https://www.vice.com/en/article/8xwd5v/grief-can-make-you-horny https://www.tiffany.com/home-designs/shop/baby-designs/ https://www.vice.com/en/article/889daa/what-is-wokefishing-dating --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mad-men-tonic/message

In this inaugural Modern Bar Cart LIVE episode, Eric teams up with Modern Bar Cart Co-Founder Ethan Hall and live stream producer Eric Holtzman to bring you a comparative tasting of rare Chartreuse! Some of the topics we discuss include: The history of Chartreuse, including its origins as a medicinal elixir, its ties to the Phyloxera plague that killed all the grapes in France, and its rise to notoriety. What distinguishes Yellow and Green Chartreuse from one another flavor-wise, even though the recipes are known only to two people ON THE PLANET, and how their different distillate bases tell stories that extend far beyond their alpine cloister. What types of ingredients and flavors you’ll typically find in Genepies and alpine liqueurs across the board, and how Chartreuse fits into that category while also playing with a great deal of exotic spices and botanicals. Then we taste our rare bottle: The 9th Centenary Liqueur produced to honor the 900th anniversary of the Carthusian order who are responsible for producing Chartreuse. We talk about how we sourced this bottle, what makes it special, and how it adds to the flavor story of the Chartreuse lineup.
Episode 27 features Chartreuse. A favorite spirit of mine, it was partial inspiration for the creation of this podcast. This episode gives the history of the first products produced by Chartreuse, including information on the four expressions available in the United States. Tasting is focused on the Green Chartreuse that is bottled at 55% ABV, or 110 proof. Enjoy this episode with some Chartreuse, neat, chilled, or try the cocktail The Last Word. Chartreuse's official website: https://www.chartreuse.fr/en/ (https://www.chartreuse.fr/en/) Brief Historical Timeline: 1084 - Founding of the Carthusian Order by St. Bruno 1605 - The manuscript listing 130 plants said to be the basis for an elixir of long life is given to the monks by Marshall of France, Francois Annibal d'Estrees 1737 - Brother Gerome Maubec perfects and finishes the recipe for what becomes known as the first liqueur, the Elixir Vegetal de la Grande Chartreuse 1764 - Green Chartreuse is created 1793 - During the French Revolution the Carthusians are expelled from France, taking the original manuscript with them, though it ends up being sold 1810 - Original manuscript is sent to the Ministry of Interior, though returned "refused" because it is not deemed to be secret, the Carthusians eventually regain the original manuscript 1838 - Yellow Chartreuse is created 1884 - First written record of Chartreuse being used as a color name 1903 - French government nationalizes the Chartreuse distillery and the monks are again expelled from France 1900s - During their expulsion from France, liqueur production shifts to Tarragona, Spain 1920s - Production is done at a second distillery in Marselle, France 1929 - The Carthusians regain control of their French trademarks and return to their monastery 1935 - A landslide destroys the distillery in Fourvoirie, near the monastery 1936 - Distillery moves to Voiron, France, a town near the monastery 1963 - The V.E.P. editions of Green and Yellow Chartreuse are first released 1970 - Carthusians form the company "Chartreuse Diffusion" to handle bottling, packaging, advertising and sales 2017 - New distillery opens in Aiguenroire, closer to the monastery Key Cocktails: Chartreuse is very complex, but was originally produced as a medicine. It therefore works great to sooth a cold, when mixed with some hot water. Recreationally, you can enjoy it neat, chilled, served on ice, or mixed in cocktails. The Last Word: 3/4 oz. Green Chartreuse 3/4 oz. Gin 3/4 oz. Lime Juice 3/4 oz. Maraschino Liqueur Shake over ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, enjoy! Ep 17 - Special Guest: Cole Risner - Singer. Songwriter. Texan. (Part 1)On this episode, we have singer/songwriter Cole Risner (https://www.colerisner.com/). From his website: Cole Risner has been writing songs since he was 13 years old and hasn’t been able to stop. In Cole’s short time on the Texas scene, he has already left his mark. Sharing the stage with Jack Ingram, Reckless Kelly, Hayes Carll, Radney Foster, American Aquarium, and Chris Knight just to name a few. Playing at legendary venues such as Gruene Hall, Cheatham Street Warehouse, The Granada Theater, Floore's Country Store, and the Larry Joe Taylor Music Fest. Not only does he join us, but he brought the goods. We're drinking Green Chartreuse, it is the only liqueur in the world with a natural green color and only 3 monks know how to make it. Cole takes us on his journey through the music business, background, & cool stories. Cole's most recent album, Better Man, can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon or wherever else you get your tunes. The more we drink, the more loose we get. All three of us are huge Game of Thrones' fans, so we naturally end up down that road. This is a long one, but a good one. Stay tuned. Hey Everyone, Welcome to episode 26, where we talk about the Chartreuse, a drink with a humbling and ancient history. In this episode, we talk about the history behind the Order of Chartreuse, the Catholic Order who have been making this drink for over 300 years not for profit, but to survive in the world they live in. The actual recipe is kept secret, only known to two specially chosen monks who carry out the distilling. This is one to try for yourself, we highly recommend it. Thanks for listening! This episode, we're drinking Green Chartreuse. https://www.chartreuse.fr/ The documentary we talked about: Into Great Silence http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478160/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/agooddroppodcast Email: agooddrop@gmail.com Website: www.agooddrop.com.au

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, and this week we are talking with Irishman, Irish whiskey expert and Tullamore D.E.W. brand ambassador, Tim Herlihy just for the occasion. In this week's episode, Tim breaks down what the difference is between Irish whiskey and other whiskey categories, he fills us in on a bit of history and what makes Irish whiskey so special. We also learn exactly how the Irish truly celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Hint - it doesn't involve green beer. Tim also shared with us his favorite Irish whiskey cocktail, The Tipperary. This week's recipe: The Tipperary 1.5 oz Irish Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 1/2 oz Green Chartreuse 2 dashes of aromatic Bitters Orange Twist for garnish Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and fill with ice. Summary: The lads discuss certain products they will never skimp on and for very good reasons. In the Studio: Dan Ken Critter Cocktail du Jour: The Last Word - 3/4 oz. Gin - 3/4 oz. Green Chartreuse - 3/4 oz. Maraschino Liqueur - 3/4 oz. Lime Juice or Lemon Juice Or just equal parts. That's easier to say. Add all ingredients to a mixer with ice and shake the shit out of it. Strain into a martini glass to be classy as fuck. Quote du Jour: Billy Madison - [to Miss Lippy] Whoa whoa whoa, Miss Lippy. The part of the story I don't like is that the little boy gave up looking for Happy after an hour. He didn't put posters up or anything, he just sat on the porch like a goon and waited. That little boy's gotta think 'You got a pet. You got a responsibility.' If your dog gets lost you don't look for an hour then call it quits. You get your ass out there and you find that fucking dog. A classic from 1930's "The Savoy Cocktail Book." Superficially similar to a sidecar, this one kicks up the exotic flavors by using Chartreuse. See the note on using green versus yellow varieties of this French liqueur below. I stumbled across this one while browsing the PDT app on my iPhone, and I find that the recipes out there mostly follow the same ratios with some variations for sweetness. The recipe below seems to turn out a cocktail that is just right for my palette. 2 ounces Cognac 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice 1/2 ounce Green (or Yellow) Chartreuse 1/4 ounce simple syrup 1 dash Angostura bitters Place all of the components in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a coupe. Garnish with lemon, if desired. Note: Every recipe I looked at recommended Green Chartreuse. The PDT app says they use green because the prefer the flavor. Craddock's book doesn't have a recommendation, so it's mostly a matter of taste. If you have both varieties on hand, try it both ways. The yellow version you may find a little sweeter and the green version more herb forward. The winter is upon us, the season is brisk, and what better to warm the toes and soul then with a dram of whiskey tequila? With stories from Peter's trip to Mexico and his love for the Blue Agave Goddess, we've packed this little puppy with some knowledge on tequila and some tasting. (at this point we're pretty much just using the podcast to drink...a lot...) Below are a couple of cocktail recipes as well for your enjoyment. Shoot us your feed back on these. They're simple and delicious, once you get the booze for them. We're starting to get through the basics pretty quickly and we've lined up some great guests in the near future, so let us know what your thoughts have been and enjoy this little gem. Also here's a recipe for one of my favorite tequila cocktails created with the help of my fellow bartender Joel (he's at Rare Italian in Fort Collins, killer spot, check it out). I give you "The Bekken" The Bekken The Bekken - A cocktail inspired by Jerry Thomas' Martinez The Bekken - A cocktail inspired by Jerry Thomas' Martinez A spin off of Jerry Thomas's Martinez, this little ditty substitutes a nice caramel-ly reposado tequila in place of the softer, sweeter more complex Old Tom Gin. Enjoy up or neat after a brief stir over ice. 1 1/2 oz Casa Noble Reposado - Or your choice Reposado or Anejo - The slight aging provides some softer more balanced flavors. 3/4 oz Carpano Antica Formula 1/2 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur 1 Dash Regans Orange bitters - Compared to Angosturas, Regan's Orange bitters is a bit softer and floral and less spice forward. Combine all ingredients over ice and stir for about 12 to 15 seconds. The right amount of stiring to dilution will offer a perfectly blended, chilled and mellowed flavor. In other words, stirring is key in this drink so stir and taste throughout until you reach your optimum balance. Strain into your glass of choice and garnish with a flamed orange swathe, but be careful not to leave a singed zest over the drink. Enjoy and send me your feedback on this drink. Vida Mezcal, Green Chartreuse, Blood Orange and a touch of orange zest. Vida Mezcal, Green Chartreuse, Blood Orange and a touch of orange zest. The Fireside Here's a fun cocktail with Mezcal. A bit smokey, acidic, and floral this little gem provides a constantly evolving palate teaser. 1 1/2 oz Vida Mezcal 1/2 oz Green Chartreuse 1/2 oz Blood Orange concentrate (in all honestly, the frozen and thawed stuff works best in this case. The flavor is just so much more packed in this way.) Stir the Mezcal and Charteuse over ice for about 12 to 15 seconds, again dilution is important in this drink. Strain into you drinking glass of choice and add the blood orange Concentrate by pouring it on the side of the glass guiding it with a spoon. This will help the blood orange to settle to the bottom. Garnish with orange zest. Drinking this cocktail is meant to be fun and ever changing. By layering the blood orange to the bottom you can take a sip of the cocktail with the chartreuse and mezcal acting as the most prominant flavor at first. Then by stirring the cocktail together with the blood orange you create an entirely different cocktail that is smoother but citrus-y and smokey. What a freaking blast!
