Ask just about anyone who is a non-hiker to name a long distance hiking trail and chances are they will say the ‘Camino' and by default this means the ‘Camino Frances'. also known as the ‘Way of Saint James' or the ‘Camino de Santiago', This well-known pilgrimage trail starts in France, crosses the Pyrenees mountains which straddles the border of France and Spain, and continues into Spain for a total distance of 780km long. This trail which was World Heritage Listed in 1993 takes most people around 35 days to walk. But did you know that there are over 200 ‘Caminos' with a handful attracting the attention of keen hikers who want a different experience than that on offer via the Camino de Santiago. In this episode we talk with hiker Sheila Lunter who joined the 828km Camino del Norte (the Northern Way) and the 321km Camino Primitivo (the Original Way) in a ‘choose your own adventure' option to find out about these ‘lesser known' Camino's. www.australianhiker.com.au Australian Hiker can also be found on our various social media platforms Australian Hiker Facebook Australian Hiker Instagram Australian Hiker Twitter Australian Hiker Threads Australian Hiker Youtube

Hast Du schon mal was vom Camino de San Salvador gehört? Welcome back to the new season of the podcast, with the first episode coming early Monday the 20th of May. This time, Ronni has been wandering the Camino Primitivo in Northern Spain and talking to the wonderful people he has met along the way, as well as dropping the microphone far too many times. Look out for Ronni, support the podcast, order the book, and buy him a coffee here. The World is Storytelling podcast is based on the book by the same name. Written by Arjen Barel, Ronni Gurwicz, and Stu Packer, it is the definitive guide to how sharing stories can be used for social impact and personal growth.

BECOMING A PILGRIM WHILE ON THE CAMINO After completing the Camino from Sarria to Santiago, Paul from Ireland is getting ready to do the Camino Primitivo the fast way. This isn't for everyone, and it brings up some good questions, like: >> What is a pilgrim? >> Do you have to be a pilgrim to "do" the Camino? >> Is it possible to become a pilgrim? >> Whose opinion matters here? We also talk about finding spirituality along the Way, what you need to know about the weather, and a few top experiences in Santiago. WALK WITH ME IN 2024! Carl Stickelmeyer and Brian Danker met at the American Pilgrims on the Camino annual gathering at Lake Tahoe in 2020. They've since become great buddies. Earlier this year they embarked on the Camino Primitivo from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. Along the Way, they discovered it was much more difficult than they had anticipated, and it meant it was an even greater achievement to arrive in Santiago and then to take their Camino back to their family. This is a great chat about friendship, overcoming hardship and sticking it out, even when you think you're on your last legs.

I grew up in a family of expectations. From the way we behaved to the way we thought, there was one right way. It is something I wrote about in my first memoir, The Cardinal Club, A Daughter's Journey to Acceptance. But life has a way of reminding us that we're not in control. It's taken me a lifetime to unlearn that lesson, something I continue to work on today. That lesson is one that my guest on the podcast this week, Leigh Brennan, learned when the life she'd always dreamed of fell apart. After her marriage broke up she she mentioned to a friend that she'd always dreamed of walking the Camino de Santiago. But Leigh had never imagined walking alone. It was something she'd hoped to do with her now ex-husband. Faced with an overwhelming sense of grief for a life that no longer was, Leigh bought herself a plane ticket and walked her way into a new way of being in the world. As she faced the uncertainty of the journey ahead, she learned to let go of expectations and free herself for what was possible.Upon her return home, and anxious to stay connected to her newly found Camino spirit, Leigh created a virtual home for pilgrims, The Camino Cafe Podcast. The podcast serves as a place where pilgrims can return to the sense of community they felt as they walked. When my book Estrellas came out, I appeared on her podcast and despite the fact that we'd never met in person, we became instant friends. It wasn't until I walked the Camino Primitivo this past year that I actually met her in the flesh and we shared a wonderful dinner together in Santiago where Leigh now lives. In addition to the podcast, she also does a vlog show called Good Morning Santiago which features the beautiful destination city of the Camino Routes. Prior to becoming a full-time pilgrim, Leigh is also a longtime yoga and meditation teacher. She hosts post Camino restorative yoga, mindfulness and debriefing circles for English speaking pilgrims arriving in Santiago. Leigh now lives full-time in Santiago de Compostela. She has one daughter, Kiley, currently in architecture school in the US and a labradoodle puppy named Cooper. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, J. F. Penn. Joanna is a friend of mine, and I've been listening to her fantastic podcast for over a decade now, The Creative Penn. Like me, Jo is a fan of solo walking, and she's recently written a book on pilgrimage. While I've done various long-distance trails in England, I've never done a pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago has been on my list of things to do since 1996 when I first read Paulo Coelho's book about it, so it's definitely something I've been wanting to do. In this episode, we talk about what pilgrimage is and why you might want to do one. You certainly don't have to be religious—you can use a pilgrimage to explore your own inner journey or simply to visit ancient sites or sacred places. I hope this episode inspires you to start thinking about pilgrimage! About J.F. Penn J.F. Penn is the Award-nominated, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of thrillers, dark fantasy, and crime. She also writes non-fiction for writers as Joanna Penn, and is an award-winning podcaster, international speaker, and creative entrepreneur. This week on From Sparks TO LIGHT we meet Gary Mallon, a fellow peregrino I met this summer while walking the Camino Primitivo in the north of Spain. As fellow east coasters, we bonded right away, and when I heard he was a social worker, I knew I had to have him on the podcast. I had so much fun talking to him about the work he's done over the course of his career. He's spent the better part of his life in the field of child welfare, working with kids in the foster care system. He's warm, funny and really smart, and as climbed through the Cantabrian mountains this summer, the conversations we had made the kilometers zoom by. Like me, Gary began his career in residential treatment, caring for children who could no longer live with their families, and also like me, his journey that began from his Catholic roots ignited a spark that fed his desire to make a difference in the lives of the children he met throughout his career. When I talked with him he was in Louisiana, doing work with the state's child welfare system. If you listen carefully, you might hear a train or two passing by.Gerald "Gary" Mallon is the Julia Lathrop Professor of Child Welfare and the former Senior Associate Dean of Scholarship and Research at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City. For more than 46 years, Gary has been a child welfare practitioner, advocate, educator, and researcher. He is an internationally recognized expert on LGBTQ+ children, youth, and family issues particularly as they relate to child welfare and juvenile justice. His scholarship and practice has been recognized through multiple awards. Gary is the author or editor of more than thirty-one books, several of which have been translated into Spanish, Japanese, French, and Italian. He has lectured and consulted extensively throughout the United States, and internationally. He earned his doctorate in Social Welfare from the City University of New York at Hunter College, holds an MSW from Fordham University and has a BSW from Dominican College. He has been a foster parent and is the adoptive parent of now grown children. He lives with his husband, Martin and Bruno, his dog in New York City and New Orleans. To learn more about Gary, check out his website: https://www.garymallon.comFollow him on social media:on Facebook @gary.mallon.79On Instagram @geraldpmallonOn Twitter @mallongTo learn more about Robert Maggio, the composer of our theme music, please check out his website. To learn more about the inspiration for this podcast, please check out Suzanne's memoir, Estrellas - Moments of Illumination Along El Camino de Santiago. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Moose Mutlow. He's kind of the opposite of me in the sense that he's a Brit who lives in California. Moose is an experienced outdoorsman with a background in search and rescue. This episode explores why we're so drawn to visit wild spaces and what these places give to us. We also discuss tips on how to survive and thrive in the wilderness, especially when we're new to getting out in wild places. Currently based in Yosemite National Park he is the senior project director for NatureBridge the largest provider of Environmental Education in the US National Park system. Karla Males wrote about the Camino Primitivo in a blog to say "shit's not that real guys". It's a good point. We all need a reminder, that the world is small...and loving...and caring....and wonderful. You can find Karla's blog here....https://medium.com/@karlamales77
Relationship to the self defines relationship to nature. For too long we as humans have defined ourselves as a separate entity to the natural world that needed to be controlled, exploited, and subjugated. Gradually the realization is dawning that nature is an expression of the divine and that we are an integral part of the whole. Feeling, breathing, and aligning with nature during a deep walking experience is one of the most underrated and best forms of healing, especially when you might be feeling overwhelmed and frustrated by all the negativity of the external world. Aligning and healing with the help of nature Some years ago I had a profound experience on one of my pilgrimage walks on the Camino de Santiago in northwestern Spain. I started the walk feeling exhausted and stressed out. Inevitably my thoughts would wander back to the daily treadmill of life. Then, in the following days, as I found my natural walking rhythm I noticed nature coming closer. I was starting to smell the grasses and herbs along the path. Birds would fly close by, stray dogs would follow me for part of the way. On the mountain tops of the Camino Primitivo giant vultures sat motionless a mere two arms lengths away. I started practicing going in sync with my surroundings by attuning my senses to one element in nature at a time. It would either be the butterflies dancing ahead of me, the calming sound of a creek nearby or just feeling the sensation of a breeze against my skin. Immersing in nature in this way, I found, has an enormously regenerative and calming effect on all senses.
Recordings and reflections on the last day of the Camino Primitivo, as we, along with many others approach Santiago de Compostela. The Pilgrim Mass, our own 'last supper', and more limoncello than is healthy for anyone! See you next time!
Penultimate day's walking from Boente to Pedrouzo. Much busier on the route as we start to close in on Santiago de Compostela, with a definite feeling of being in the final stages.
From Ferreira to Boente, taking in a very untypical fast food experience, making new friends, and celebrating the patron saint of drunks!
From Lugo to Ferreira - a long, hot day's walking, with observations on the wildlife, a thunderstorm of biblical proportions, a taste of regional wine and a candlelit, communal paella!
Cadavo to Lugo - bizarre encounters, Beatles songs and Bobby Charlton! Roofing methods and the rural idyll.
Fonsagrada to Cadavo Baleira, via Paradavella. More up and down than a fiddler's elbow! Great company, and a 'session' cementing Anglo Italian relationships to finish!
Yosmar Martinez, Pilgrim, professional chef, and author of Tastes of the Camino, is back with us....this time she's live from Santiago de Compostela on St James Feast Day after walking the Camino Primitivo. In this video, you'll hear a first-hand account of what it's been like to travel recently, how the Primitivo compares to the Frances, foods you can expect while walking, what the Cathedral Roof Top Tour is like, why "spirit and health" are so important for walking, backpack tips, and much, much more. Episode 9, Day 9 - Grandas de Salime to Fonsagrada. Camino marketing opportunities, wind turbines, cross border relief and drainage and a big lunch!
Berducedo to Grandas de Salime. Downhill does your knees in!
Tineo to Berducedo via the 'Hospitales' route. Vultures, views and a solitary mountain top picnic.
Salas to Tineo - Rogers and Hammerstein, and the great Safety Pin theft!
Short but hot day's walking from Grado to Salas. The guidebook has it as about 22Km, but it felt a lot longer!
Oviedo to Grado - first official day of the Primitivo route. A day (and night) full of the Camino spirit....in more ways than one!
Day 3 leaving San Salvador de Valdedios and heading for Oviedo. Compeed, Calamares and una copa de vino tinto, what more does a man need.
Second day - from La Isla to San Salvador de Valdedios. A day of rain, nuns and spiders with tatoos!
In late August 2018 I started my second Camino de Santiago, the Camino Primitivo which is traditionally walked from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Having flown to Bilbao, I got a bus to Ribadesella on the northern coast of Spain, where I started walking, following the Camino Norte for a day or so until it diverged and I was able to follow the Primitivo. This is day 1 - cheese, rain and lots of cider!
