If you've been shying away from – or you're just curious about – Fulfillment By Amazon because you see Amazon as a big, mean corporation, you'll want to hear what our guest of honor, Neil Twa, has to say. And he's dropping some serious knowledge about a tricky topic, so you won't want to miss it.(First, he'll tell you that you may be forgetting that the majority of sellers on the platform are third party sellers. In fact, he and his team have been referred to as the “Batman and Robin of Amazon,” with a long-game outlook that helps business owners see the bigger picture that extends beyond just Amazon. In this episode of The Ecommerce Alley, I had the opportunity to talk with Neil about the strategies he uses to realize such incredible success for his own business as well as those of his clients.Don't miss a word of what Neil shares with me because it could be the motivation you need to achieve your revenue goals so that your lifestyle drives your business and not the other way around.Follow me on Instagram @joshcoffy or on TikTok @joshcoffy.

Amazon FBA. Well what is it? It's called Fulfilled by Amazon. This is where you have a physical product, you ship it to Amazon. When someone buys the product, Amazon ships it to them, collects the money, takes out their fees and sends you whatever money is left. And there's lots of courses and lots of people bragging how much they sold by doing this. Now, you got to excuse me for being skeptical. Distributors worry that Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is assuming key distributor roles and erasing them from the equation. The service picks, packs, ships and even manages returns for retailers and distributors, as well as holds inventory in Amazon fulfillment centers.More manufacturers are also leveraging ecommerce to go direct to the end-user, rather than through the distributor. How concerned should distributors be? And how can you avoid being eclipsed?Distributors add a great deal of value in the supply chain between suppliers and customers. With these functions in mind, let's take a look at why distributors' traditional roles in the channel may be at risk of being replaced entirely.Distributors selling through marketplaces. In this scenario, distributors surrender much of their value-add and openly share data that Amazon could use to replace them. This is an especially significant risk if the marketplace is also a merchant.Manufacturers selling through marketplaces. Many manufacturers are prepared for this because distributors have demanded more drop-shipping over the years.Manufacturers selling direct. Many manufacturers are selling directly through their own websites. Fulfillment by Amazon. In this scenario, it would easy for Amazon to go directly to your supplier and cut you out entirely.By outsourcing distribution functions to marketplaces, distributors are heading down a slippery slope toward extinction.

[4:35] Marc has yet to decide on the subject of next week’s podcast episode will be. It will likely be an interview Marc had with Mark Anthony Dyson on The Voice of Jobseekers podcast, but depending on how things go, it could be something different. [4:48] This week, Marc is playing the audio from a webinar Marc did with Jean LeFebvre for the Career Pivot Membership Community. Marc shares Jean’s bio. This is the third time Marc has had Jean talk to the Career Pivot Community about her journey into becoming a Fulfillment by Amazon entrepreneur. Marc welcomes Jean to the podcast. [6:21] Jean tells how she got started with Fulfillment by Amazon. Two sets of friends had started a successful course on selling on Amazon. Several of Jean’s friends joined the course and had a good measure of success. Jean was looking for something that would allow her to have an expanded income without as much hourly work. [7:00] Jean consults people on their wardrobes. She helps them clean out their closets and takes them shopping for new clothes to match their style, according to a personal color analysis. Marc went through this process. Marc is an ‘Autumn.’ [7:35] Jean took the course Amazing Selling Machine. One of the first things Jean learned was how to select a product. It took Jean a year to select her product. First, she tried a product that was unrelated to her experience. It turned out to be wrong for her. She finally chose to sell a product that matched her existing audience. [9:54] Most people do not start with a large following. Jean did, which is a built-in market for her. Jean hopes if you have something you are already good at, with product potential, don’t disregard what you know or who you know. [10:35] Jean’s product is an earring lifter back that “makes earrings sit up pretty.” They give a youthful look. It’s an easy sell. [11:30] Jean has learned that you don’t have to be the number one vendor for your product to make a profit. You will likely move into more than one product. Having a line of 10 or 20 products is common. Don’t leave all your eggs in one basket. [12:27] Jean sources the product from China. The course taught her to use Alibaba, a group of Chinese manufacturers that are vetted by Alibaba. They have rankings and gold is the top ranking for manufacturers who have been with Alibaba for more than two years and have been investigated on fulfillment and good reviews. [13:25] The manufacturer ships a moderate quantity of the products to Jean and she has laser-printed labels that she attaches to the package. She has the labels printed inexpensively at FedEx while she listens to an audiobook. Jean ships them to Amazon. [14:17] The first earring lifter backs that Jean ordered were formed in a shape that somebody else was in the process of patenting in the U.S. After a day on Amazon, the patent holder complained and the product was removed. [15:52] So Jean hired a patent attorney who had a patent searcher. They learned that the patent violation was a design patent violation, not a use patent violation. After some research, she ordered them in a different shape that was not patented so she could sell them in the U.S. [17:10] Jean also learned that the name she had been using for her consulting company was not eligible for a trademark. There were too many companies already using that name, Panache Images. Jean came up with the name WardrobeJazz, which she uses now for both for the earring lifter backs and her consulting practice. [17:47] WardrobeJazz says more about what Jean actually does, so she likes the name. She applied for a product trademark for that name and expects approval soon. The approval can take six months to a year. [18:01] Marc takes a moment to talk about the Career Pivot Membership Community, which continues to help the approximately 50 members who are participating in the beta phase of this project to grow and thrive. [18:22] Marc reads a member testimonial from Jean: “I’ve been a member of the Career Pivot Community for many months now and have been delighted with the support and guidance that I’ve received. This isn’t a group and Marc isn’t the type of person that makes ridiculous promises or puts you under pressure to get a lot of quick results.” [18:39] “Results come from making incremental changes regularly but they do come. Marc helps each of us to grow in our own way. The community is a comfortable, safe place to discuss our common problems and to work toward long-term improvement.” [18:57] This is a paid membership community where Marc offers group coaching, special content, mastermind groups, branding sessions, Slack channels, and more importantly, it’s a community where you can seek help. Please go to CareerPivot.com/Community to sign up to learn more. [19:28] Back to the interview — Jean went to Fiverr to get bids to have a logo made. Jean selected a graphic designer she liked, who gave her five concepts. Jean chose one of them and with a couple of adjustments, it was exactly what she wanted. The logo cost her $65.00. [20:51] Marc notes he had a Membership Community training with former member Jim Addams, who explained how he used Fiverr. [21:09] Jean launched the product again and went through a refining process. She learned how to market. She started with Facebook ads, which were too expensive for the results she got. Over months, she changed the wording of her listing, changed the title and bullet points and paid for keywords. She included professional photos. [22:25] The image stood out beautifully. Then, in two weeks, 10 other sellers copied the style of her image, so they all look similar. This is an example of how you need a thick skin to sell online. You get knocked down and you have to get right back up. [22:55] Sooner or later you will get the progress you want. It’s not for wimps. [23:16] Jean notes that a lot of people price too low and then their competitors buy their product for resale. When you have a special deal you must set a restriction that the quantity is limited to one or two. [24:00] Jean has run Amazon ads, and that is the next step she wants to master. She will not go back to Facebook ads, for now. She sees more value in Amazon ads. [24:33] Jean’s audience is people from 35 to 65. A lot of women in their 60s are still working and are a market for earring lifter backs. [25:38] Jean’s biggest challenge has been keeping her chin up. The business is not easy. Having the community with Amazing Sales Machine helps when Jean needs answers. Having experienced mentors helps. Jean’s next goal is to have this product produce enough income to justify adding another product and then another. [26:29] Marc has marketed his book with Amazon ads for a couple of years and now is going to Facebook ads. Marc took an Ads For Authors course from Mark Dawson. Mark talks about a formula: test, measure, test, measure, test, and particularly with Facebook ads that work for a while and then stop working. When you figure it out, it will change. [27:28] Jean likes the category of fashion and wardrobe helpers for her next product. You could buy them in the notions department of a fabric store. People who need these things are often too busy to go looking at a fabric store. People like the convenience of buying on Amazon. [29:08] The Amazing Selling Machine has videos on how to select products. Their advice is to pick something that’s not too popular but still a known product. The next point is to choose for weight, size, and price. Shipping large objects takes longer than shipping by air. [29:35] Jean didn’t realize at first how smart she had been to pick a product less than an ounce, that ships by air. She can restock in two weeks with no problem. [30:24] Jean’s advice: Don’t quit your day job. Don’t do it on your own. Get some training and find a supportive group that understands the technology of what you are doing. There is a learning curve. [31:44] Marc is in Mark Dawson’s Self-Publishing Formula Facebook group because he bought the Ads for Authors course. Whenever Marc has a question, people in the group answer it for him. You can also search the previously asked questions. [32:26] Marc also uses the Facebook groups for Mexico expats. That’s how he found the shoe repair man, Umberto. His only website is on Facebook. Marc suggests you should find your tribe. [33:15] Marc thanks Jean and he hopes you enjoyed the episode. Jean didn’t sugar-coat anything. This takes perseverance. Marc will continue to follow Jean’s progress through the Career Pivot Online Community and this podcast. Link to The Amazing Selling Machine and WardrobeJazz to learn more. All sales help Jean. [34:05] The Career Pivot Membership Community is a platform to provide both inspiration and practical help in creating changes in our lives and careers. It continues to help the approximately 50 members who are participating in the Beta phase of this project. [34:14] This is a community where everyone is there to help everyone else. [00:52] Please introduce yourself. I am VP of Sales at Tactical Logistic Solutions. Tactical has locations in New Jersey and California, and I'm based in New Jersey. Tactical is an end-to-end provider of supply chain logistics. We go from our client's overseas manufacturing location via air, sea, and land to their warehouse, our warehouse, or to Amazon's warehouse. [01:36] Tell us a little bit about your background. I grew up in a Monsey, New York, a small town in Rockland County. I attended high school in Monsey and Israel. I'm a husband to a wonderful wife and father to two beautiful children. [02:10] What was your first job? My first job was working as a customer service representative for a bulk candy company that had an online store and 4 retail locations in New York. The candy company had previously sold candy on Amazon, but they were unhappy with the results I was given to opportunity to relaunch candy sales on Amazon and after a few struggles, we reached $1,000,000 per year in sales. After my success with selling candy on Amazon, I launched a gift basket company which has done very well. [04:21] When did you join tactical? Since my gift basket business was seasonal, I outsourced the fulfillment, which gave me a lot of free time. I realized that I had the opportunity to help more people, so I joined Tactical in 2017. I had two goals: 1.) share my Amazon knowledge and experience with Amazon sellers and 2.) open a new service offering, Fulfillment by Amazon within Tactical. [06:41] Explain what Fulfillment by Amazon is. When you buy something with Prime on Amazon, 99% of the time that's a product that has been shipped right from an Amazon warehouse instead of from the seller. About two thirds of products on Amazon are FBA. Using FBA allows you to offer quicker shipping to the whole country without destroying profitability. It was a piece of cake to sell on Amazon in the early days, but now it's getting harder and harder. [10:51] What is the first mistake you see from sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon? A lot of sellers don't realize that every single space in the warehouse is allocated. I always tell FBA sellers to get their suppliers to do the labelling for them instead of doing it themselves in the US. You can even get your freight forwarder to do it, because some sellers are afraid of their supplier becoming a competitor. [14:53] What is the second mistake you see from sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon? When you use Amazon-partnered carriers, it's very appealing because they're crazy cheap. When you do that, it takes two or three days for Amazon to pick it up from your warehouse. They then schedule a drop off time that is chosen by Amazon. The problem with that is Amazon will only accept deliveries during the daytime. I recommend getting a 3PL or local trucker to deliver your shipment to Amazon. [21:16] What is the third mistake you see from sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon? There's a lot of sellers that import product from China that have it palletized. They think that if they don't have it palletized, it will get damaged. In my experience, very few cartons get damaged because they make sure to fill the container to capacity. You lose roughly 30% of space if you put your product on pallets. It's a little bit more expensive to deliver, but it's still way cheaper than using pallets. [24:21] What is the fourth mistake you see from sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon? In the last two years, Amazon has really decided they're not in the storage business. They're in the selling business. If you don't sell, they make you get out by charging additional storage costs after certain periods of time. Keep your stock in your own warehouse until it needs to go to Amazon. Replenishing monthly is a good approach. [28:00] What is the fourth mistake you see from sellers who use Fulfillment by Amazon? Amazon has a performance index that goes from 0 to 1000. Under 350 is in the red. If you go below 350, you get limitations of what you can send to Amazon. The factors that affect your score are excess inventory, sell through, stranded inventory, and in-stock inventory. These affected me because I'm a seasonal seller, and my score would be red when Christmas came around. I went to Amazon to discuss alternatives. [34:03] Any closing remarks on these topics? If you're worried about damage from not palletizing in China, you can get insurance for very cheap that will cover you. If you do everything correctly, you'll be on the fast track to sales. Best Books to Sell on Amazon from 5 Years' Experience If you are selling books on Amazon, of course you are going to want to know what kinds of books are most likely to sell for more—education or business. To be honest, all of them do. You just have to find the right ones. Now, I know that answer sounds like a kind of cop-out, but I'm giving you that answer for one reason. Why? Because I don't want you to go out looking for specific types of books. It's great to be aware of textbooks in general. Textbooks are probably the best books to be on the lookout for. Textbooks are very encompassing. It could be business books; it could be educational books. It could be accounting, biology, political science, history, or literature books. Textbooks in general are probably the number one thing that you want to be on the lookout for. Click To Watch This Video On YouTube... The Amazon Seller App I can't say it's educational based, or business based, or accounting based. The top piece of advice I'm going to give you is to go out there and download the Amazon Seller app. First and foremost, if you're looking to sell books, don't sell them on eBay. Now, if you have a huge business, and you're selling boatloads of books, and you're getting thousands and thousands of books into your warehouse every day for pennies on the dollar, then, yes, you could sell them on eBay. I know some successful eBay sellers who put their books on eBay for $4 or $5, and they make maybe 20 or 30 cents per book. They do high volume, and they make that work. But for the average person, I would recommend selling them on Amazon FBA—which is Fulfillment By Amazon. What you're going to want to do is to download the Amazon Seller app. That app is going to give you the ability to scan books. The app will be able to tell you a couple different pieces of information—the rank (which indicates how fast of a seller it is, or its sales velocity) and the number of reviews (which speaks to its social proof). Usually the more reviews you have, the better a seller is typically going to be. But that's not always the case. Rank is probably one of the best things to look for. It's going to tell you the new price, the used price, how many FBA sellers, and how many merchants. Which Textbooks to Pay Extra Attention To I don't want to give you the advice to look out for specific books because in the end you're going to make a lot more money by scanning all the books, or, at least, picking and choosing specific textbooks. But in general, if I had to give you advice about what to look for, things that are weird, textbooks, or weird educational books. For example, take a really specific textbook like The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance. Now, you're going to find a lot of books on low-carb dieting, which is normal. But when you match two things together—low-carb dieting and performance—then things get interesting. So that would be an interesting book I would scan. Why? Because you're matching two different themes up together. For example, if you find a book about exercise but for grandmothers, well, that would be just different. Just look for books that make you say to yourself, “What? Who the heck would want that?” Yes, you want to scan that book. Finding Books to Scan Where do you go to find books to scan? I would recommend starting with library sales if you have them in your area. Why? They are dirt cheap. But be aware that because they are so inexpensive, you will have a lot of competition. You want to get there early. Secondly, I would look at thrift stores. That is another great place to find textbooks. Obviously if it's garage sale season in your area, go to the garage sales. Most people are not buying and reselling books from garage sales, so the competition for them won't be an intense. Be Cautious about Dates Now, I've learned over the years not to get very excited when I see a bunch of textbooks.

Are you ready to get started with selling online? How great would it be to hear from someone who has recently found the success you are looking for? You might be wondering what does selling online look like, how can you get started? You’ve come to the right place! On this episode of The Amazing Seller, Scott sits down with Gary and Kim Rey who went from zero to one million dollars in sales all through Retail Arbitrage and Online Arbitrage via Fulfillment By Amazon. You will hear how they got started, how they divide the labor and some of their best practices and tips that you can implement today! Don’t let any more excuses keep you from pursuing success, take action! Retail Arbitrage and Online Arbitrage - what is the difference? Lingo and insider verbiage can be very confusing. You might be afraid to ask or maybe you forgot so here is a quick recap of what Retail and Online Arbitrage are. Retail Arbitrage is surveying retail stores to find products that there is a demand for on Amazon. Online Arbitrage is the same thing but it’s all done online, no physical shopping in the retail stores. On this episode of The Amazing Seller, you will hear from a husband and wife team. Gary enjoys OA and his wife Kim enjoys RA. Don’t miss the lessons you can learn from their recent success! Retail Arbitrage is a great way to get started with selling online. You know you want to get started with selling online but you aren’t sure what route to take. Should you start with Retail Arbitrage (RA) or Online Arbitrage (OA) or something else? Kim Rey found that starting off with RA was really helpful for her. Kim started by buying just a few extra items here and there when she was out shopping. She would look at the profit that she would be able to make on each item and decide from there. Her strategy has changed over time but she found this to be a great way to get started. Find out what you can learn from Kim and her husband Gary’s experience on this episode of The Amazing Seller! If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Selling on Amazon using existing listings. Selling online can be very intimidating. There is a lot of different strategies and lingo to wrap your mind around and you are nervous about losing your money and failing. This is one of the reasons Scott invited Gary and Kim Rey on the show today. Gary and Kim have successfully learned and streamlined an approach to Retail Arbitrage (RA) and Online Arbitrage (OA) that works for them. They don’t even get involved with creating their own listings on Amazon. Gary and Kim simply find products that are performing well and that they can get at a low price and then post those products to existing listings on Amazon. This may not work for everyone but it does simplify the process. To hear more about Gary and Kim’s story, make sure to listen to this episode of The Amazing Seller! Don’t let your personal preferences influence what you buy and sell. You’ve heard it said that “You are your own worst enemy.” Gary and Kim Rey would agree with that statement. They have been highly successful engaging in Retail Arbitrage (RA) and Online Arbitrage (OA) over the last couple of years. One of their biggest tips when getting started with RA and OA is to avoid personal bias. Even if you cringe at the thought of black nail polish, don’t let that keep you from researching the price and possibly making a big profit. They’ve learned over the years that there are many different and niche interests in the marketplace and if they can learn and adapt to these interests, they will be more successful for it. We’ll share an overview of leveraging serverless architectures to support high performance data intensive applications. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) built the Seller Inventory Authority Platform (IAP) using Amazon DynamoDB Streams, AWS Lambda functions, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and Amazon Redshift to improve results and reduce costs. Scopely will share how they used a flexible logging system built on Kinesis, Lambda, and Amazon Elasticsearch to provide high-fidelity reporting on hotkeys in Memcached and DynamoDB, and drastically reduce the incidence of hotkeys. Both of these customers are using managed services and serverless architecture to build scalable systems that can meet the projected business growth without a corresponding increase in operational costs.

Pilar got started immediately and found herself spending time individually boxing and mailing out items. In this episode, you'll also hear about: What is FBA, and how can it help you reach a wider customer base? How you can discover complimentary items for popular products. How to great product reviews. What is the one thing Pilar warns you should never do on Amazon? How is Amazon different from Google in terms of search results? And so much more! Additionally, there are a multitude of strategies that can be used on Amazon to expand to a bigger customer base. Pilar is sharing these tactics in a course, in which you can learn how to build your very own e-commerce business.
