How can the breadth and depth of a candidate's curiosity be assessed as part of the interview process? We were curious. Who could we kick these questions (and others) around with? We were NOT curious about that! MaryBeth Maskovas, founder and Principal Consultant at Insight Lime Analytics, joined Michael, Julie, and Tim to explore the topic. On World Book Day I thought I'd focus on how business books can be a rich source of content worth investing in. Books have the ability to captivate our imagination. They can transport us to another place and time. They can change our view on something entirely. This is why so many authors turn to books as a way of conveying their message. World Book Day was created by Unesco in April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. It's marked in more than 100 countries around the globe. The day aims to promote reading for pleasure while offering “every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. But as well as children reading and enjoying reading, over the years, books have been used by businesses and organizations as a means of storytelling. The advantages of using books as part of a content strategy are numerous. So today I cover my own personal reflections and share 3 ways I have used business books for my business, my personal PR and my clients. So let's dive in! In this episode of the Demystifying Diversity Podcast, host Daralyse Lyons explores the enduring legacy of white supremacy and racism, and how it currently impacts our society today. This episode is the first installment of the White Allyship series, in which Daralyse interviews white allies who are actively doing work to break down barriers and make the world more inclusive from their self-acknowledged place of power, privilege, and influence. In this episode, you will learn about: How racism and other -isms will continue to pervade our society as long as privileged groups allow it to. How microaggressions, when permitted, perpetrate harm in subtle and overt ways. The role that privilege, anger, and the shirking of responsibility have in creating a culture of discrimination. How, when unchecked, cultures of discrimination and mistrust lead to opression and systems that beget political despotism and autocracy. How genuine connection and a desire to understand individual experience is a powerful antidote to creating cultures of discrimination. In This Episode We Discuss: The relationship and distinction between B Corp, B Labs, and Public Benefit Corporations The most common hurdles companies face on their path to becoming a certified B Corp What a “worker cooperative” is Why not all investments are created equal, and the power of a holistic stakeholder perspective Key Takeaways: Remember that each of us has a voice, and within that voice there is power. As shareholders, we have the power to choose the companies we invest in as well as power to ask for those companies to consider all stakeholders (and we can support them with our votes to legally transition to a public benefit corporation). As employees, we have power to ask what our employer's environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy is, where your company currently stands, and how they're trying to improve. What would it look like if businesses were driven by humanity instead of efficiency? How would the decisions we make change? How would our working environment change? How would our relationship to work change? How would our communities change? The importance of looking at the ripple effects of our actions—the second and third order consequences—both good and bad. Considering the ripple effect gives a holistic perspective of our impact, and can help us make more intentional, informed, and equitable decisions. Episode 40 - How to Use Business to Inspire the Next Generation with Cheryl Dodd Welcome to Building a Bigger Table The podcast for misfits, mavericks and magic makers who want to create a profitable, sustainable business that makes as much impact as it does income. In This Episode: Welcome to episode 40 of the Building a Bigger Table Podcast, where I'm joined by the lovely Cheryl Dodd. Cheryl has a dance school, a gymnastics club and has been in business for 22 years, but she's here to talk about her most recent passion project BizKidz which inspires children to set up their own businesses. I wanted to create this episode for all of the entrepreneurial, business-minded parents out there, because I think secretly, we all want our children to follow in our footsteps and become their own bosses. Whether they end up going down that road or not, Cheryl believes there are a ton of benefits in encouraging them to start a business in their childhood - ones that the traditional education system can't provide. In this episode, she tells us how BizKidz got started after her 11 year old daughter Izy decided to set up a slime shop, and then takes us through exactly what she teaches inside the BizKidz academy course. We also cover how you can inspire your children (or nieces, nephews … whoever!) and empower them to start making their own choices and doing things their way. If you have kids in your life, you're going to love this episode! Key Takeaways: It's about making your own choices Fills gaps of traditional curriculum Increases confidence and self belief Let them drive it Quotes: “What I've noticed on this entrepreneurial journey is that she is suddenly able to steer her future in just the way you're describing Shaa and and feel that sense of self worth.” “I do get the privilege of watching them go from being quite fearful or thinking that they can't do something to believing in themselves and then doing it and that's just amazing.” “She could see other people that were doing the thing that she wanted to do … so she had a really clear vision of having a warehouse with all of these slimes and creating her content, and the kind of content she wanted to create so she's created her vision in her mind.” Meet Your Host: Hi, I'm Shaa. I've been called a serial entrepreneur … but I've never been one for labels! I've done SO many things in my career, including starting and scaling multiple 7 figure businesses, and am grateful for being recognised with some lovely awards - most proudly, an MBE from The Queen “for Services to Business and Entrepreneurship”. I've been featured in major publications for my efforts (named one of the UK's Top 20 Most Influential Entrepreneurs by The Sunday Times and one of the ‘Most Influential Women in the UK" by the Institute of Directors), and have written 4 straight-talking, bestselling books; Stop Talking, Start Doing; Stop Talking, Start Doing Action Book, Do Less, Get More; and most recently, How To Fix Your Sh*t. Episode 33 - How to Use Business to Make a Stand Welcome to Building a Bigger Table The podcast for misfits, mavericks and magic makers who want to create a profitable, sustainable business that makes as much impact as it does income. In This Episode: Welcome to episode 32 of the Building a Bigger Table Podcast, and I'm not going to lie, I'm going to get a little bit serious. I'm talking about a decision I made recently in my business, and more generally how we can use our businesses to make a stand. I think this is an important conversation for us as business owners, but also as consumers. Recently I decided to stop using Basecamp as my project management software after five years. And this decision is not based on the fact that there might be better suited alternatives out there - it is 100% based on the way Basecamp as a company has been operating recently, and a statement they made that is not cohesive with my values. If you've followed me for any time, you know what those are. It's about leveling the playing field, creating real social mobility and equity for everybody, not just equality. I'm not recording this episode from the position of someone who gets it right all the time, but as someone who genuinely is trying to get it right as often as possible. And as somebody who, despite her failings will always, always stand up for the things that really matter when it comes to values or morals and ethics. When you work as hard as I do, and you do, I believe that the money we earn should be invested and spent with companies and people that support our own ethics, morals, and standards. So if you want to know how to use your business to make a stand, this episode is for you. Key Takeaways: Decide on your values You have to walk your talk Spending is supporting It's not about cancel culture Quotes: “There's this feeding frenzy that wants to take them down because somehow some people think that if you can take somebody else, who's bigger than you down, you will take their space. That is not true. And it's not fair. And I think we should be very careful of this cancel culture and [...] feeding that fire because it is not healthy.” “The only way you can use your business to make a stand is by actually doing it, is by saying I'm going to take my hard earned money and I'm going to go move it to a company whose ethics, morals, and standards are more aligned with my own.” “I believe the way we hold people accountable is by holding ourselves to a higher standard. And actually backing up what we say, walking our talk. Voting with our dollars or our pounds.” Meet Your Host: Hi, I'm Shaa. Business taxes. Do you feel the same feeling of dread that most people do when they hear those words? Taxes are one of those things most of us find difficult - and the guest we’ve invited to be with us on this episode wants to give us reason to think differently about the issue. He actually believes that a tax return is a thing of beauty, something to be used for assessment and planning. He also believes it's when accompanied by the counsel of a professional who can help you understand what your tax return means. How’s that for a new way of thinking? Join us for this episode, where we speak with Anthony Mauriello, a tax accountant who specializes in business returns, leads a team of 11 people, and processes around 4000 tax returns every tax season. And he loves it. You’ll want to hear this one - Anthony is a guy who is excited about taxes, and he just might get you excited about your taxes too (Dean was). Why do most entrepreneurs get lazy when it comes to their business taxes? We have to admit there’s a stigma about business taxes, a strange way of thinking that convinces us that it’s not fun and that we should avoid dealing with the issue. Anthony says there is lots of psychological baggage - guilt, fear, etc. - associated with money and taxes, but that most of it is inaccurate and none of it has to control the way we handle our finances. Listen to this episode and you’ll be amazed at how Anthony can not only make your taxes sound like something you don’t have to dread, he’s also got a seemingly magical ability to make your business tax return into a thing of beauty that helps you more than it scares you. His advice is golden, so be sure you listen. Why your business tax return is a beautiful piece of art Anthony loves business tax returns because they are like a snapshot, a by-product of what’s happened in the past so you can plan in the present to make a better future. Not only do you want to understand and know your net profit or loss, your tax return will also enable you to pinpoint the categories where mistakes and choices were made that have impacted whether you were profitable or not. Using your tax return, you can chart a course for the future where you don’t have to be afraid of what’s going to happen financially. You and your accountant can co-create a path to a better future (the next year). By assessing your business tax return together, you have the opportunity to be proactive, considerate, and act with integrity to legally minimize your tax liability going forward. That’s something ALL of us want, but can only be accomplished by seeing your tax return as the amazing tool and opportunity that it is. What should a business owner do to be more in touch with her taxes? OK, if you’re convinced that you need to pay more attention to your tax situation, what should you do? Anthony wisely points out that a one-time change to the path of a boat can bring it back on course. He applies that analogy to the reality that you need to be speaking with the people who handle your finances regularly. It doesn’t take much to ensure you know where your financial ship is headed, and if you maintain the discipline of quarterly conversations, the changes you’ll need to make will be minimal. Anthony says that the worst clients he works with (though he loves them all) are those who come in after the year ends looking for ways to minimize their tax liability - and more times than not they receive a huge shock when they learn what they owe. There’s nothing proactive about that - and Anthony loves helping business owners make the changes needed to BE proactive and avoid that sticker shock at the end of the year. What should you ask your accountant to understand your tax situation? It’s not uncommon for CPAs or other accounting professionals to be a bit challenged when it comes to explaining the various approaches to taxes. Anthony says that you should make a point to interview the people helping with your taxes. You want to discover their experience working on taxes related to your industry and take the time to get acquainted on a more personal level. The better you know and trust each other, the better you’ll work together in proactive ways... and the more likely you'll be to get the right people on your team. You can even do this with someone you’ve worked with for a long time. If you tell them that you’re taking a greater interest in your tax situation, they’ll honestly be very glad to help you. As you have those conversations, be sure you understand what the various figures mean and how you can modify your financial habits to minimize your tax liability. Join us for this episode. You’ll not only be amazed at how helpful your business tax return can be, but you'll also be surprised at how giddy with excitement Anthony is about helping you use it to its fullest potential. In this episode of the Grow Ensemble Podcast, we speak with Ryan Honeyman from the LIFT Economy, an impact consulting firm based in San Francisco. Ryan has been a staunch advocate and spokesperson for the B Corporation movement, and on April 23rd, he and his Co-Author, Dr. Tiffany Jana, are releasing the 2nd Edition of The B Corporation Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good. We dive into the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion (topics highly relevant to the release of the new edition of the book), and how Ryan and his LIFT Economy team have begun to put the most marginalized as the center focus of their work with the hopes of making the greatest systemic change. Ryan shares insights to the writing process, his hopes and intentions for releasing the 2nd edition of the handbook, and as well what he considers to be the next evolution of the social business and social impact business culture. Ryan has either spoken with or worked with hundreds of B Corporations and impact focused businesses through his research for the two editions of the book, his consulting work on behalf of the LIFT Economy, as well as his founding (with his LIFT Economy partners) of the Force for Good Fund. We talk about what he believes separates some of the most successful social businesses and social business leaders, as well as what the “greatest good” can be as you approach making an impact with your own business.
At just 15-years-old, Sharron Lee knew she wanted to be an entrepreneur. Her dreams came true when she opened her seafood restaurant — just one of several businesses she’d successfully start, grow and manage all while working a full-time job as a master data analyst! This episode is unique in that Sharron is the first guest to talk about how she leverages business infrastructure in selling a tangible product. Specifically, she shares her story of perseverance and tenacity in building her restaurant and candidly talks about recent challenges caused by fast growth. Sharron also reveals how her background in computer science enables her to outfit her restaurant with the best technology to streamline and improve the overall customer experience while also remaining in compliance because, as she says, “You have to run a tight ship.”
Ryan Honeyman is a consultant and author of The B Corp Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, October 2014). Ryan has helped over 30 companies--like Ben & Jerry’s, King Arthur Flour, Method, Klean Kanteen, and Nutiva--become Certified B Corporations and maximize the value of their B Corp certification. He also trains aspiring impact consultants via his recurring "Secrets of B Corp Consulting" courses. Along with his LIFT Economy team, Ryan helped cofound the Force for Good Fund, a $1M fund that invests in women and people of color-owned, "Best for the World" B Corps (e.g., those that score in the top 10% of all B Corps worldwide). He is also a co-host of "Next Economy Now," a podcast highlighting the leaders who are taking a regenerative, bio-regional, democratic, transparent, and whole-systems approach to using business for good. Ryan Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The Force For Good Fund The B Corp Movement Importance of Social equity and diversity in the sustainability movement Benefits of becoming a B Corp Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Ryan's Final Five Question Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? One thing that stands out is, again, that you don't really need a particular background or experience to do sustainability or to make the jump. For example, even if you've done social studies or chemistry for 10 years, doesn't mean you can't be a sustainability consultant or professional. So I would just say it's more about connecting it to your passion and making the leap, then having some particular background lined up. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I think a lot of sustainable businesses, who are sort of deep in the eco movements, are starting to realize that things like diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice are just as important. Sometimes as sustainable businesses we can sort of nerd out on the way that carbon in the soil gets sequestered, but the neighborhood a few miles away is burning because of economic inequality and sort of like fighting between racial fights. So I started to see more businesses in the community, and also in sustainable business movement, start to say, "What are we doing about inclusive hiring practices? How are we looking at not just having a diverse group of people but also making them feel included and belonging?" So really looking at, is the product or service serving different communities, people of color, women, LGBTQ, immigrant communities? So it's been really exciting for me looking at sustainable business and regenerative development beyond just the environmental lens only. What is one book you'd recommend sustainability professionals read? This is a book that I read that was pretty powerful. It's not necessarily narrowly within the sustainable business category. Charles Eisenstein wrote it, it's called A More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible. So, Charles Eisenstein's a pretty cool guy, a philosopher, but also interested in climate change and regenerative ag. But this book is really looking on a deeper level, how do you really make personal changes and perceptual changes that can help you in your career? And so I think that it's applicable to sustainability professionals as well. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in the work that you do? Definitely bcorporation.net and the bimpactassessment.net. Those are two free tools for folks who are just interested in benchmarking their social and environmental performance. I definitely love podcasting, as Josh knows. We have our own podcast, Next Economy Now, the Lift Economy podcast. I'm super excited there's more people like you, Josh, who're doing this sort of like pumping out more information about regenerative development. Just keep following Josh's podcasts. Finally, where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work that you are leading? Yeah, so our website is lifteconomy.com. Our podcast is Next Economy Now and we're on iTunes and Google Play and Soundcloud. If folks want to check us out on twitter, I think it's at @lifteconomy. And then my email address is on the Lift Economy website as well if folks want to reach out directly.

Three different definitions of value plus a plethora of ways to demonstrate it requires discipline. Otherwise we have a recipe for problems to crop up. When those problems aren't addressed they become agreements – our priorities that determine how we do business here. We can't let those assumptions (and the way things have always been done) become "normal." Jess Dewell discusses how to use business values.

Norah’s Wild Idea: To create an innovative company that makes seafood not only sustainable and delicious, but helps improve the health of the oceans while connecting people with their food and where it comes from. To also empower other young female entrepreneurs to take risks in businesses even in industries primarily dominated by men. Norah Eddy is the co-founder of Salty Girl, a sustainable seafood company with an innovative way of doing business. She grew up in a small New England fishing town and has worked on and around fisheries and boats all over the world. As a surfer and all around water-woman, her love for the ocean is apparent not just in her work with Salty Girl, but in her personal life too. I talked to Norah just before she gave her first TED Talk, and I can see why they invited her. Norah’s created an inspiring company that’s helping connect people with the food that they eat while encouraging sustainable practices. We talked about sustainability, becoming an entrepreneur, being a young businesswoman in a male dominated field, and creating a mission-based company. Listen to this episode if: You love seafood. You want to save the ocean. You love companies with a mission. You’re a woman in a male-dominated industry. You want to change the world through business. Twenty-five years ago, two mates took a bunch of friends and an ex-council truck from Australia and travelled throughout Africa. This was the germination of Intrepid Travel, a responsible travel business that now has six specialist tour operators and 17 destination-management companies employing more than 1500 staff in 25 offices around the world. Each year, they take over 250,000 travellers to more than 100 countries on all seven continents. My guest today is Geoff Manchester, one of the two mates who co-founded Intrepid Travel with the aim of creating experiences that benefit all stakeholders: travellers, staff, communities and the environment. The conversation starts with Geoff explaining why Conscious Capitalism and becoming a certified B Corp is important to him and Intrepid Travel. From there, we go on to discuss: How Intrepid Travel got started and what pivoted them towards responsible travelling The four pillars of conscious capitalism: Purpose beyond profit Stakeholder orientation Conscious Leadership: Leading from behind Culture: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast” Managing people from different countries with different cultures within the Conscious Capitalism framework Recruiting for culture versus recruiting for skill Choosing which social projects to support Partnerships The three main hurdles Intrepid Travel has faced Geoff’s tips for people wanting to start their business as a responsible entity Quotes “The four pillars of conscious capitalism really reflect our business.” @GeoffManchester “Companies will need to become B Corporations because B Corp certification will assist the consumer to decide who they want to spend their money with.” – @GeoffManchester “Conscious leadership is much more about leading from behind.” – @GeoffManchester “Give people the understanding that they can think for themselves.” @GeoffManchester “Be focused on getting culturally correct people because you can teach them the skills you need.” @GeoffManchester “Keeping up with the technology involves a huge investment all the time, and it never seems to stop.” @GeoffManchester “It’s not a matter of going to new countries but a matter of doing new styles of travel.” @GeoffManchester Episode Resources Intrepid Travel Twitter @GeoffManchester Twitter @Intrepid_Travel Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest Intrepid Foundation Conscious Capitalism B Corporation free assessment tool Firms of Endearment by Raj Sisodia Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family by Bob Chapman & Raj Sisodia The B Corp Handbook: How to Use Business as a Force for Good by Ryan Honeyman Seven Women The skincare social enterprise mentioned – Metta Natural Skincare.
