Annette Simmons is the author of several books including The Story Factor and Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins. Having read a lot of books about story, I can say that Annette is a leader in this area. That's why I was excited to chat with her about her work this week on the On Brand podcast. About Annette Simmons Annette Simmons is a vibrant keynote speaker, consultant, and author of four books: The Story Factor named one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time, Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins, A Safe Place for Dangerous Truth (AMACOM, 1998), and Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work. Annette started with a business degree from Louisiana State University in 1983, spent ten years in Australia in international business, attained an M.Ed. from NC State in 1994, and started Group Process Consulting in 1996. Sales is about building relationships. People want to have faith that you're a good person and that you're there for the right reasons. They don't get to see you in action. But if you tell a story about a real experience, it shares a sample of your behavior. It allowed them to decide whether or not you're trustworthy. Annette Simmons firmly believes that storytelling is the substance of relationships. How do you know what stories to tell? Annette says to think of a time when you can share a quality that earned you the right to be trusted. What examples from your background of when you were that quality? Or when you blew it? If you narrate it as a real experience using your sensory imagination, magic happens. If you are in the moment, other people feel it as real. But the key is that you have to share a substantive true story.  The attributes of a great storyteller Authenticity is #1. Salespeople are trying to build a relationship of trust. When Annette was researching storytelling and sales, she came across a story about a supplier to Walmart. He had been trying to sell to them for ages and never got a sale. Then the purchaser called and asked him for something he didn't have—but he knew who did.  So he gave the purchasing agent the name of the person who had what they wanted. That's where he started to build trust. So when he had what they were looking for, they already trusted him to deliver. What are the other attributes? Listen to hear Annette's thoughts! The 6 kinds of stories you must tell Annette believes there are six stories every salesperson must be able to tell.  Who I am Why I'm here  A story that teaches something A vision story A value-in-action story The “I know what you're thinking” story When you hear a story, it prompts you to think of a story. People start sharing stories, which is when the magic happens. Storytelling is a collaborative process. Practice your story with someone else so you see if you're recreating an emotional experience. If you're not, you get a chance to correct it before you're in a sales situation.  Using a story to demonstrate trustworthiness When Annette does facilitator training, she caps the classes at a max of 10 people because the work is intense. She wanted people to have the freedom to work on themselves as well as learn the process. For one of her training sessions, she had five people signed up, each paying their own way. A large client reached out to her and said they'd take the remaining spots.  Instead of agreeing to take all five, because she didn't believe it would be fair to her current participants, Annette said she could accept 2–3 and the others could join the next training. She wanted to make sure it was a good experience for everyone. The woman told her she wouldn't be getting her business and hung up on her. People might hear that story and focus on the thought that she lost business. Annette doesn't care. She shares the difficult things they don't want to hear with positive intent. What stories can you share that might be difficult but will create trust? And create a context where you are being honest and authentic? Annette will make decisions that are in the best interest of her clients, even when they disagree. Telling that story creates a powerful base for a relationship and builds trustworthiness. The first one is, “The Story Advantage: Unleash the Power of Storytelling to Engage, Inspire, and Influence.” The second one is, “The Story Factor, by Annette Simmons.” The truth is that we all tell stories all the time, even when we don't realize what we are doing. We tell stories while at work. …on social media. And we're telling stories when we chat with our friends. All day… Every day we are surrounded by stories from others, and the ones we create on our own. That's every day you. However the businessperson you, you have some hurdles too. As a new business owner, how do you let people know of the expertise you have? If you are like MOST entrepreneurs just starting, you don't know if you're good enough. Wondering if you can get others to work with you. Doubting your credentials. It's normal. Self-doubt affects even the best people online, and offline. Hollywood's elite are succumbed by it. CEOs of huge companies are among those that feel its effects. And yet, they make movies. They still build huge companies. They tackle and overcome huge obstacles. And so can you. But when it comes to running a business, and showing prospective customers and clients what you are good at, and the strengths you have, you must learn how to articulate your strengths. “The potential for creating novel brilliant solutions is not going to be found at one ivory tower or the other but in the middle, and we have to destigmatize what it looks like to be in the middle.” Annette Simmons Working with each other, rather than against each other, is what the world needs especially in times of conflict. While competition is inherently human, it can as well be divisive and cause people to pull towards different directions instead of working towards achieving a common goal. Annette Simmons is passionate about having collaborative narratives, and believes that storytelling is a tool that can enable people to see the bigger picture.  Annette Simmons is a successful consultant and author of five books including her most recent, Drinking From a Different Well: How Women's Stories Change What Power Means in Action   (2021)  Simmons' solo career started in 1997 with the success of her first book Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work (AMACOM, 1997) a deep examination of the micro-behaviors that discourage truth telling, information sharing and resource re-allocation.  As a follow up Annette developed a facilitation guide called, A Safe Place for Dangerous Truths:Using Dialogue to Overcome Fear and Distrust at Work (AMACOM, 1998), full of tips for sharing truth in a safe way as well as principles and tools to shift the “truth telling” norms for one-on-one conversations and meetings. Her book about storytelling, The Story Factor (Basic Books, 3rd ed. 2019) introduced the business use of storytelling and was named one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time (Penguin, 2009). She followed it with a workbook designed to develop a reader's “six stories” titled Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins: How to Use Your Own Stories to Communicate with Power and Impact (AMACOM, 2nd ed. 2015)  She started out with a marketing degree from Louisiana State University (1983) and a move to Australia that provided ten years of international business experience with Ericsson and J. Walter Thompson. Annette returned to the USA to earn a Masters Degree in social psychology and adult education at North Carolina State University in 1994.  Annette has been featured on CNBC's Power Lunch, NPR's Market Watch, talk radio programs, quoted in Fortune, Working Woman, Harvard Business Review, The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, and dozens of other respected publications.  In addition to English her books have been published in Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, Swedish, Norwegian, German and Russian. I facilitated this form of dialogue, and then eventually realized that storytelling was the magic tool to help someone to see a situation through another's eyes. When we're trying to maximize our potential, we need to be able to combine somebody else's narrative with our narrative into a bigger picture that includes us both. If we don't learn how to tell our story, and take someone on a little field trip about what we've seen, they can't see it. I help people learn how to create collaborative narratives, and work together and find opportunities that they just can't see when they're in silos. As long as people are arguing from these polar opposites, they are wasting the time that they could be creating solutions. The potential for creating novel brilliant solutions is not going to be found at one ivory tower or the other but in the middle, and we have to destigmatize what it looks like to be in the middle. We've optimized this idea that you can solve metrically, and therefore have scored badly in solving the things that just can't be measured. Creating potential is almost always a function of building collaborative relationships with other people. Commercial break The first four books that I wrote were really kind of power with strategies instead of power over strategies. One of the things that I'm finding is that people with the collaborative narrative don't just want to win, but they want to protect. One of the problems with a strictly competitive is that it makes us think that harm is just the cost of doing business. This particular book takes you through the stories that women tell that men don't, and takes you through the idea that moral wins actually undercut competitive wins. We need to do is we need to re-define harm avoidance, as something other than risk avoidance. We've got to learn how to redesign the way we keep track of who we are, and how successful we are, and women have a talent for it. It is time to redesign what power means in terms of the logistical design of systems so that women will be more attracted to these top jobs. Companies are going to have to provide the opportunity to do good as well as to do well, if they're going to attract women. My hope for this new book is I want women to not feel like they have to suck up to the guys in charge, but to feel like they have an opportunity to educate the guys in charge. Women have to start believing that they can see things that are invisible from a competitive narrative. In her most recent book, Drinking From a Different Well, author Annette Simmons looks at the “genius of women's narratives about power.” After reading the book myself, I highly recommend it to both women and men in leadership. It is both challenging and fascinating, helpful and informative, because whatever we say about progress, there's more to be done for equality in this space. Annette is a keynote speaker, consultant, and author of several books. In this episode, we focus on Drinking From a Different Well and the topic of women's stories changing what power means in action. She tackles huge problems and how there are different perspectives not only on the problem but the solution as well. How To Tell A Story That Connects & Sells   In this episode, we are going to talk about how to tell a story that connects and sells. We tell stories to inspire others, show empathy, and more. The problem is, we don't know how to tell stories in a way that consumers will be compelled to buy our products. This is what Jude Charles is going to teach you in this episode.    Jude Charles is a story-driven filmmaker, brand strategist, and a speaker who's been running a video production company for the past 13 years. He's been helping entrepreneurs tell stories effectively to be able to connect with prospects and clients.    What is a story?  Stories are universal. There is no difference between a story about your normal day and a story you might tell during a sales meeting. The only difference is the ending and its goal.  Stories are about a specific moment in time. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. What happens at the end will make your story impactful.    When you're telling a story in sales, you want the listener to buy into the service you're selling. This story has to matter in a way that by the end, they will want to buy your product or service. Stories can make a connection.    Case Example: Money Heist Storytelling works because it's relatable. A Netflix show called Money Heist has a story that pulls you in. It includes a group of nine guys that are getting ready to rob a mint in Spain. Although viewers aren't robbers themselves, as the movie unfolds, the audience begins to relate to these men and become more invested in the characters and the plot. The viewer gets to know these nine guys and sees their reasons for wanting to rob the mint.    The same is true in selling. You want to share a story with your client that he/she can relate to. Instead of just selling your products and services outright, or presenting bullet points of the benefits, share a success story instead. Set the scene by beginning with the problem. You'll then go into the actual journey that leads to solving the problem.  As the story unfolds, the client or prospect should be able to picture themselves in the scenario. By the end, they will see themselves as the one rescued from the problem by the solutions you have to offer.  The basics of presenting a story  When forming a story, think about how you will sit with the client and talk to them about what you're doing.  The number one question in your client's mind is about who you are and why they should do business with you. It's during this assessment your story telling should be an integral part of the sales process. It will become part of the conversation you're having with your client. The basic framework of storytelling is pretty much the same:    Start with a problem How you went on the journey of solving the problem Reveal the solution  Share the results of the solution    Jude keeps a story bank and saves story notes throughout the day, from the biggest details down to the minute ones. It's these pieces that are used to create a story that is meaningful to the client.    Kinds of Stories There are different kinds of stories. When you talk about yourself, then you are telling the Who are you? story. Other stories include Client Success stories. These kinds of stories not only build your credibility but they prove your process has worked for someone else.    There are also Closing Stories and Value Stories. These are your core values. Clients like to see integrity and transparency so you can tell a story that illustrates these values.   To see examples of great stories, a recommended book is The 10 Great Stories That Leaders Tell by Joseph Lalonde.    Raising the stakes Let's look at Money Heist again. The objective of the movie is for nine robbers to be able to get into the Royal Mint of Spain. The first thing they did was to pose as cops. The story raised the stakes when the police commissioner decided to try to break into the Mint of Spain while the robbers are there. The robbers say they have hostages and that one of them is the daughter of Spain's ambassador. The police could rescue all the people but the stakes are high because the ambassador's daughter will die.  Raising the stakes is getting to the moment in the story where it looks as though you think the journey is way too hard.  A great story will illustrate how the characters overcome.   What happens at the end The end is where you become very strategic about your story. It will include the lesson you want the client to learn. Your goal is for the client to understand that they need to be all in.  The important factor at the end of the story is how you frame the lesson. What are the results after the solution? That's a question you need to answer.    A great way story lets your client know you have an understanding of who they are, what their problems are, and the solutions they need. You want to set the vision of what the future looks like with, or without, your product or service.     Another book called The Story Factor by Annette Simmons also talks about storytelling. While it's not in the concept of framework, it shows you how to use storytelling in everyday life. It shows you how you can influence the person you are talking to so you can get your message across.    You can get better at telling stories by doing it every single day and observing how people react.
