This week on On This Walk, we cover a lot of ground — leadership, love, culture, and our walks towards deeper Truth. My walking partner for today is Ryan Hartley, father of two and host of the globally popular podcast, Always Better Than Yesterday. Ryan has been a featured guest on over 30 podcasts and is regularly invited to speak at events internationally. His podcast is currently listened to in over 140 countries.  Listen as Ryan and I really get into it. We talk about what it means to live from love as opposed to for love. We discuss the influence of society and how it actually makes us feel incomplete and inadequate. We even touch on faith, religion, Christ consciousness, and spirituality. It's all happening right here On This Walk. In This Episode (04:01) – Evolving into the heart-centered leadership style. (11:40) – Changing course and steering into leadership. (16:22) – Living from love, not for love. (22:39) – Why culture is not our friend. (25:50) – What are our desires based on? (31:00) – Ryan describes the challenge with the pursuit of happiness. (34:12) – Talking about faith and seeing through a Christian lens. (41:23) – On relating to the energy that is God. (46:12) – Luke on the feeling of being separate. (52:39) – Heartset - Loving with all of your minds. (58:51) – Reflecting on what it means to be human. (1:02:33) – The masculine and feminine views of heart-centeredness. (1:04:44) – How the journey has changed Ryan as a father. Notable Quotes “The reason I say culture is not our friend is because sometimes we have to take a step back and go, where are my desires coming from? Because you might say from a heart-centered perspective, should we follow our heart's desire? And I've had to get my head around this. I try every single day to get to Psalm 23, which starts with ‘The Lord is my shepherd. I have all that I need'. And I think that is the perfect scripture to remind myself every single day that in this moment I have all that I need. I do not lack anything. And when I do that, when I truly feel blessed, grateful, appreciative, that I can look around and choose my life, then whatever I do becomes an expression of that love and gratitude.” – Ryan (24:04) “Anytime you feel lost, separate or lacking, close your eyes. Breathe, slow down and feel. Feel for that breath that runs through you and runs through all things, all of life. You're a part of that great mystery. Source yourself from that knowing, from that love and connect to that playful, creative, rambunctious, curious, loving, generous, even weird little inner child that you are. And this again, is a practice. This remembering doesn't always happen overnight, but taking the time to feel it, to breathe with it, to touch it within us and around us. Doing this as a practice allows us to remember, it's always been there. It will always be there, and we always have access to it. No need to think your way there. Just feel for it.” – Luke (49:33) Our Guest Ryan Hartley is the Chief Heart Officer of Always Better Than Yesterday, a company that develops heart-centered leaders through coaching, consulting, community building, and podcasting. Before that, he served as a local police force for 12 years in a variety of leadership roles. Founded in 2017, Always Better Than Yesterday survived the global pandemic and thrived by helping many leaders and businesses to do the same. Ryan Hartley is Chief Heart Officer at Always Better Than Yesterday (ABTY), which exists to help develop heart-centred leaders, teams, organisations and communities to reach their potential and make a positive impact on the world. ABTY is a heart-led organisation built on the belief that real leadership is the act of putting your own needs aside to serve others. ABTY shares this philosophy through coaching a heart-centred model and developing courses to lead its clients from the heart to how we think and make decisions through how we serve people and onward to how we leave a positive impact on our communities.  In this episode John and Ryan talk about how he came to be a coach, the definition and modern placement of the word ‘love', the modern absence of heart-sensitive men in the workplace, his relationship problems, finding faith, love languages, self-care and self-love.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Ryan took a job with his police force as a Dispatcher and became a parent as well as a Manager. Through these two roles, he developed his enthusiasm and interest in Leadership which he felt was about serving other people rather than the rank-and-file type established in the police force. From coaching part-time Ryan is now training people full-time through consulting, coaching, community leadership and podcasting in the concept of helping people be better than yesterday.  Our workplaces are full of self-serving leaders. That is an abuse of power, true leadership is about serving and protecting.  Our panic-based fight or flight response restricts our ability to choose a response in situations. Constant stress means unconsidered decisions based on emotion. If we can bypass our childhood learned patterns we can understand others' learned patterns also and see things more clearly and respond in a more logical, thoughtful manner. Time to ourselves is essential to be the best version of ourselves to other people.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I guess I just describe myself as a curious human being. When I was a kid I must have watched all of the serial killer profiles. It led me to want to know more about people. I've always been curious about his topic of psychology.' – Ryan  ‘In a lot of cases it seemed like following orders for the sake of following orders and that didn't sit with me very well either. Tell me about that and how it may have impacted on you.' – John ‘I think that is what a masculine man when he has love in his heart is willing to do. He is honourable, he is noble, he will create safety for those around him and he will be willing to serve and sacrifice himself should he be required to.' – Ryan  ‘Isn't it funny that we don't say “I love you with all of my mind”? So I've come to understand that emotion and love is deeper than thinking. I can't force myself to think I love you. I can't force myself to think that I value the company values.' – Ryan  ‘The mind is never supposed to be the leader. The mind is always supposed to be the servant. It is the heart that leads the way.' – Ryan  ‘The minute we wake up someone wants something from us. So we have to factor in some time, particularly as men and as dads, and in doing so realise that other people get a better version of us.' – Ryan  ‘That's the problem with human beings, they're so conditional. When we try to receive love from another human being it's generally conditional and yet self love and acceptance needs to be unconditional.' – Ryan  GUEST RESOURCES Website: www.abty.co.uk Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alwaysbetterthanyesterdayuk/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ABTYUK Podcast: www.abty.co.uk/podcast VALUABLE RESOURCES Link to my workshop -   https://www.johnkennycoaching.com/5- things-you-need-to-create-a-healthy-loving-relationship/ To get in touch - email –  john@johnkennycoaching.com  or book a complimentary call –  https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min If people want to order a copy of the book then they can just pay postage of £4.95 (RRP £8.99) - www.johnkennycoaching.com/podcast-book-offer Want to be able to address the relationship issues in your life? - Why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get the new started with some new types of relationships - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min The Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy         ABOUT THE HOST I am John Kenny, Award Winning Relationship Coach.Coaching people to experience healthy loving relationships. Our guest this week,https://abty.co.uk/ ( Ryan Hartley), is the community leader and Chief Heart Officer for Always Better than Yesterday which “exists to help develop heart centered leaders, teams, organizations and communities.” On a personal note, he is a good friend and one of the first people I thought of when I created this show. Why? Well, you will hear from today's conversation that Ryan's approach to building community is a bit, what should we say..? Unconventional. If you feel overwhelmed with all the ‘tactics” to grow your community, and feel like there are a hundred things that you “should” be doing, this episode is for you. Anna Sandborn, is a wife, a mother and a Heart Centered Leader from Sweden. She is also the Owner of Mpire Development, a company that helps leaders build an environment that focuses on empowering and inspiring people, teams and organizations to come together in a synergistic way. She's helping teams find their "why"... and teaching her clients to create an environment built on trust, inclusion and caring... for people to come as they are and thrive as a team. Anna and I connect a few months ago through a mutual friend, Ryan Hartley, who also happens to be our coach and mentor. I asked Anna to come on the show and share her story.  The work she's doing is absolutely amazing: At the age of 15 she was hit by a car that was traveling 80 kilometers per hour (approx. 50mph).  She sustained life threatening injuries, but recovered quickly with no permanent damage. This event changed her life, going forward. It gave her the courage to follower her dreams. She pushed herself beyond her comfort zone, achieving her goals that she didn't think were possible. Several years later, while holding a management position with a company, she was in a second car accident. This event made her realize that she was put here, to give back to others.  She wanted to do more than be a manager, focusing on the numbers and the metrics. She quit her job and got into coaching, so she could help other managers become leaders and focus on people, not the numbers. Today, Anna focuses her energy on purpose, values and emotional intelligence (heart centered leadership). Anna teaches "The Why Workshop", inspired by Simon Sinek. She's helping many organizations achieve greater results through her work, as we start to be more patient with each other and treat each other as human beings. The name Mpire is Empower & Inspire (together)...and Anna is on a mission to help change the world. This is why the two of us are having this conversation. As more and more like-minded, like-hearted leaders come together, the corporate landscape is changing. Anna is shifting the mindset of Women Leaders in Corporate. It's not to fit them into the Male Leadership roles, but that it doesn't matter if you are male or female... Emotional Intelligence is the future of leadership, where people want to be engaged and invested throughout the process. Heart Centered Leadership, is about People, not Numbers. Leading with Heart Influence is being authentic, having the courage to be your true self, to trust, to be vulnerable and meet people where they are, regardless of our background or identity.  Please reach out and connect with Anna Sandborn: https://mpiredevelopment.se/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/annasandborn/  https://www.facebook.com/mpiredevelopment/ https://www.instagram.com/anna_mpiredevelopment/ Thank you so much for Tuning In to episode 57.  Thank you... pressing the Play button. Highlights: [4:26]  Leading From Love  [20:30] Work that gives you energy [30:14] Giving perfect feedback   Meet Ryan Hartley: Ryan Hartley, is the heart and mind behind Always Better than Yesterday®. He shows up every day in an effort to make the world a better place, for one person, team, organization and community at a time.  Ryan is the epitome of what it means to be a coach. He helps get the best out of everyone around him.  From a young age, Ryan was fascinated with psychology and had a real desire to help people. He has always  been a real student of people, leadership and culture. Through his journey he has felt the pain of judgment, scrutiny and blame. He's not felt good enough and experienced imposter syndrome on many occasions. He's felt alienated and like he doesn't belong. He's felt like he had to change to fit in or fulfill expectations.  What I love about Ryan is that his story is, in so many ways, all of our stories. We can all relate to not feeling good enough, alienated, or like we don't quite belong. And the key is whether or not we are willing to do the work to look at all of those feelings, and the ideas and beliefs behind them… to find out who we really are.  It wasn't until Ryan  became a Father for the first time in 2012 that he learned the true meaning of leadership. To put our own needs to one-side to serve others. He has learned through experience what it means to be a loving leader, who is courageous, authentic and purposeful. Since discovering his own purpose, he has gone on to help 100s of teams and individuals discover theirs.    Connect with Ryan:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/weareabty https://ryanhartley.co.uk/ https://www.instagram.com/ryanbhartley/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanhartleyabty/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPc-D6NKoZbM_TxmmnFGckQ https://twitter.com/ryanbhartley   ...    This episode was brought to you by MyChallengeCreator.com.   My Challenge Creator is a super easy to use challenge creation tool designed to help coaches, authors, trainers, and speakers just like you maximize your profits, your impact, and your results with gamified Challenges.  See just how Challenges can help you take your business to the next level when you book a demo at MyChallengeCreator.com

Ryan grew up in England in a broken home, which led to him striving for attention from others. He grew up with a feeling a responsibility to take care of his mom throughout his young life. He had quite a bit of abandonment during his early teen years. However, he found the love of his life at 15. Things soon became very stable with his relationship and career, but in 2019 things changed. He didn't feel supported at work and struggled with fitting in with that community. His relationship with his wife was on rocky waters and he also had a health scare. Needless to say, 2019 was a turning point for Ryan. He finally made a choice to make a change. He created his own community that shows love and support for others.“Passion is for us because it feels good. But it turns to purpose when we use our passion to help others.” -Ryan Hartley. Ryan felt he had more to give and began looking into becoming a coach. He started with what he had, a phone, a headset, and Facebook Live. He didn't allow the “lack” of proper equipment to be a barrier. In 2020, he started a journey of faith. He wasn't sure if leaving the police was the right path, but he had faith in God and listened to what was put in his heart to do. Which was to help others. He learned to live in love and lead in love. Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast!
