Today we're talking with Jess Levitz the other half of Shoppe Theory! So you guys remember Do-Hee, she was our very first interview ever on the podcast. Do-Hee is the web design partner of Shoppe Theory and Jess does more of the graphic design side so we're really excited to have her on and hear her perspective. You may know her from The Creative Lady Collective Facebook group/ Instagram/ website formerly known as Freelance Wisdom. In this interview we talk about not being afraid to put your work out there, the perks of having a studio with a small team versus being a creative director managing a lot of people. She also takes us on a deep dive into her branding process which you know I loved! So I do need to apologize for my audio in this episode.... I don't always point it out when my audio is bad because I feel like people wouldn't notice it a lot of the time if I didn't but this time.... it's pretty bad. I was at my parent's house and I wasn't as prepared as I thought so I had to use my AirPods which FYI are pretty much the worst thing you can record your audio on... so there you go if you find yourself wondering why I sound like I'm speaking through a Wendy's Drive-Thru speaker and Jess sounds really great that's why! So sorry guys... I'm not an audio engineer, I'm just a girl trying to share the stories of some pretty rad ladies. Ok! Here's Jess. This week on the Mimosas with Moms Podcast, Abbey welcomes Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz the coauthors of Unacceptable: Privilege, Deceit, and the Making of the College Admissions Scandal. In their book they depict the Varsity Blues scandal as a cautionary tale for parents, a reminder of the dangers when mom and dad get too involved in trying to fix everything for their kid, and what happens when parents equate their own success with their kids’ accomplishments, like admission to particular colleges. What drove these parents to participate in the scheme, and are some of their motivations relatable? A man named Rick Singer was at the center of the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice. Singer helped wealthy parents get their children into colleges of choice with doctored essays, altered test scores, and fake athletic resumes. And let’s not forget—a whole lot of money. Wall Street Journal reporters Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz wrote a book detailing what Kirkus Reviews calls “the seamy intersection of ambition, money, and higher education.” Dr. Alan Campbell speaks with Korn and Levitz about the book, Unacceptable: Privilege, Deceit, and the Making of the College Admissions Scandal. We hear how Singer managed this scheme for so long, how he was eventually caught, and the social backdrop that created the demand for his services.

In this episode, I'm joined by Melissa Korn, a Wall Street Journal reporter who co-authored the newly released book Unacceptable: Privilege, Deceit & the Making of the College Admissions Scandal with her WSJ colleague Jennifer Levitz. One morning in March 2019, many of America's rich and powerful woke to three hundred FBI agents at their doors. Among them were actress Felicity Huffman, designer Mossimo Giannulli, business executives and storied college coaches, with one thing in common: They'd all worked with Rick Singer. Sought after by wealthy parents as a college whisperer, Singer helped children nationwide secure spots at the schools of their dreams--for some, by any means necessary. When his scheme crumbled, more than 50 people would be criminally charged. In Unacceptable, veteran Wall Street Journal reporters Korn and Levitz trace the rise and ruin of the largest scam of its kind ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice, dubbed Operation Varsity Blues. With unparalleled access to primary players in the case, they reveal how Singer cashed in on the ultimate status symbol: an acceptance letter at Stanford, Yale, Georgetown, or USC. They detail how the scheme exploited existing loopholes, with bribes and lies giving already privileged families an irresistible edge. In this episode, Melissa and I talked about how this story unfolded and what college athletic administrators should be on the lookout for in the future to prevent this from happening again. You can follow Melissa on Twitter @MelissaKorn. The largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted by the Department of Justice broke on March 12, 2019, sending shock waves through American schools and families. In Unacceptable, veteran Wall Street Journal reporters Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz trace the wiretapped calls, covert payments, and blatant deceit that brought the feds to Beverly Hills mansions and Upper East Side apartments, their residents all linked by one man: college whisperer and ultimate hustler Rick Singer. The shocking tale at the heart of Unacceptable is how, over decades, the charismatic Singer easily exploited a system rigged against regular people. Exploring the status obsession that seduced entitled parents in search of an edge, Korn and Levitz detail a scheme that eventually entangled more than fifty conspirators—a catalog of wealth and privilege that included CEOs, lawyers, real-estate developers, financiers, and famous actresses, mingling in jail cells and courtrooms. Detailing Singer’s steady rise and dramatic fall, woven with stories of key players in the case, Unacceptable exposes the ugly underbelly of elite college admissions as a game with no rule book—paid-off proctors and storied college coaches turning a blind eye, helicopter parents and coddled teens spinning lies—opening loopholes and side doors into America’s most exclusive institutions. Levitz and Korn are in conversation with Ashby Jones, deputy coverage chief for U.S. News at The Wall Street Journal. _______________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," a new, unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Defo and Lubie talk about the pay for admissions scandal with one of the authors of the book, "Unacceptable!"
In March 2019, news broke of a massive college admissions bribery scandal. Among the accused were prominent business people, well-known actors, sports coaches, and four of California’s top universities. At the heart of the conspiracy was con man Rick Singer, an author of self-help books and purported college counselor, who masterminded rigging SAT and ACT tests, faking athletic profiles and bribing coaches. Melissa Korn and Jennifer Levitz -- Wall Street Journal reporters who broke major developments in the story -- detail the rise and fall of Rick Singer’s elaborate operation in their new book, “UNACCEPTABLE: Privilege, Deceit & the Making of the College Admissions Scandal.” In this hour, we talk with Korn and Levitz about the book and take your questions about the college admissions scandal.

Join in for a conversation with Aron Levitz, the general manager of Wattpad Studios. How can I explain Aron? Simply put he is a person who went from dreaming about designing Ferraris to producing movies. A mechanical engineer by trade, he quickly pivoted from automobiles to fuel cell technology. A job he got while playing beach volleyball. Fast forward that to working at a trivia startup in the mid 2000s and making partnerships with NBC to stream the olympics to being let go from a dream job and finding his way to creating the Spotify equivalent at Blackberry and acquiring media content. This just became the start of his media journey as he now produces live action movies for the largest social network in the world for fiction writers. This was a fascinating story of someone following his north star of media and technology.
In October 1995, an heiress who had tired of high society life in Palm Beach, relocated to Vicksburg, Mississippi. She loved the slower pace of life along the Mississippi River. November 18, 1995. Vicksburg, Mississippi. 62-year old Jacqueline Levitz, the wealthy widowed heiress to a furniture empire, vanishes from her home. Two days later, blood stains and evidence of a violent struggle are discovered inside her bedroom, creating the impression that Jacqueline met with foul play. Over the years, numerous suspects would be investigated, including members of Jacqueline’s family, her recently deceased husband’s family, workmen from a construction crew remodelling her home, and a mother-and-son con artist duo who would be convicted of the murder of another wealthy missing woman years later. However, no has ever been linked to Jacqueline Levitz’s unsolved disappearance, so this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold” will explore all the different theories of what might have happened. In May 1978, 44 comics professionals (ranging from Frank Miller to Jim Shooter, Paul Levitz to Steve Ditko) gathered at Neal Adams' Continuity Studios in order to form a more perfect comics union. The seeds of that meeting would blossom almost forty years later into...nothing. But why? Why has no attempt at organizing the comics creative workforce ever been successful? Greg enlists the help of comics creator (and friend of the show) Samuel Teer to try and figure out the answer to that very question in this nearly two-hour conversation! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter. This episode is brought to you by Third Eye Comics. Enjoy your funny books.
Greg interviews Jennifer Levitz, reporter with the Wall Street Journal, to discuss what she has learned investigating the opioid epidemic. Jennifer’s recent article, Vermont’s Radical Experiment to Break the Addiction Cycle, tells the story of Todd Popovitch, a former drug user who has been given a second chance under Vermont’s revolutionary new policies regarding drug possession. Jennifer discusses the research which she undertook to write the article. Vermont has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic. “Vermont is situated in a pipeline for drugs between New York City and Connecticut,” she says. “They were going right up from New York to Rutland, Vermont. That became known as the heart of it… in a lot of places, first, it was the opioid pills. Then there were crackdowns on getting those pills. Then the heroine started to flood in from the big cities. People could make a profit on it in Vermont. It was simple economics.”

This week’s episode is another installment in our ARTWORK REBELS series in partnership with Guerilla One. Check out the others at www.rebelradio.net. If you don’t know OG Slick, you don’t know LA graffiti. My dude has been famous since the 80s. More precisely, since the Slick x Hex battle at the Levitz furniture factory, which ended up as an early reality show on local TV. He’s gone on to become one of the most noted artists on the West Coast, if not the world, and a creative force behind early streetwear brands Fuct and Third Rail, and is now the proprietor of Big Dick’s Hardware, a graffiti lifestyle brand and store in Gardena, CA. He’s also the designer of the iconic album cover for The Pharcyde’s A Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde. What you know about that? Slick stops by the studio with Guerilla One’s Eddie Donaldson to talk about his own bizarre ride from Hawaii to the streets of LA to underground superstardom. So many good stories about the golden age. Plus some good lessons for the rest of us: - Choose your friends wisely. And don’t do business with strangers. - Trust your partners (for Slick, that’s his wife). And learn how to separate business from personal. Get it all in right here. *EDM.com Track of the Week: https://soundcloud.com/your_secret/saski-faking-bright

This week Londyn and guest host / producer and engineer Mason Booker are joined by a VERY special guest, the ultra amazing Paul Levitz who definitively schools Mason on why Catwoman really is a better match for Batman than Talia Al Ghul. Levitz has been part of DC Comics for 40+ years and has worn many hats within the publication company. From editor assistant for Batman publications during the 'Dark Detective' era in the 1970s to holding the position of President and publisher of DC Comics in the early 2000s to writing the ultimate DC Comics' history in "75 Years Of DC Comics: The Art Of Modern Mythmaking"! Levitz is a legend within the company, working with and writing for seemingly every creative talent and DC character. If we celebrate Batman's 77 year history with every episode, Paul Levitz is the perfect guest to talk to about the ins and outs of DC Comics right here on History of the Batman with Londyn! Presented by Meltdown Comics! Produced by Mason Booker and Adam Silverstein. Engineered by Mason Booker Theme music by ROYALTYFREEMUSIC Logo design by Hannah Nance Partlow, hannahnance.com

The Two Guys are back with another special episode of The Comics Alternative, and, just in time for the new school year, this time they hold a roundtable discussion on teaching comics. Joining them in the discussion are Randy Duncan and Matthew J. Smith. They, along with Paul Levitz, are the coauthors of The Power of Comics: History, Form, and Culture (Bloomsbury Academic), the first real textbook devoted to comics that was just recently released in its second edition. In fact, Derek begins the conversation by asking Matt and Randy about their experiences pulling together the project, some of the challenges they faced creating a comics-centered textbook, and what kind of feedback they have received from instructors using it. But the conversation soon transitions into a larger discussion of comics in the classrooms, e.g., strategies for teaching, the hard choices when creating syllabi, negotiating student expectations, reading lists and text availability, assignment choices that reflect the medium, and course focus on specific comics topics. All four of the discussants have taught comics many times over the year, and each brings to the conversation their unique experiences and recommendations. Whether you are an educator with years of teaching graphic novels under your belt, an instructor contemplating teaching comics for the first time, a student who's always wanted to read this kind of material in the classroom, a pedagogical theorist curious about the potential of the medium, or just a reader who's interested in serious comics talk, this is an episode has something for you.
Paul Levitz is a comic fan (The Comic Reader), editor (Batman, among many titles), writer (Legion of Super-Heroes, including two NY Times Best Sellers), executive (30 years at DC, ending as President & Publisher), historian (75 Years of DC Comics: The Art Of Modern Myth-Making (Taschen, 2010)) and educator (including the American Graphic Novel at Columbia). He won two consecutive annual Comic Art Fan Awards for Best Fanzine, received Comic-con International’s Inkpot Award, the prestigious Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, and the Comics Industry Appreciation Award from ComicsPro. His Taschen book won the Eisner Award, the Eagle Award and Munich’s Peng Pris, and is being released in revised form as five volumes in 2013. He is currently working on a book on Will Eisner and the birth of the graphic novel for Abrams Comic Arts. Levitz also serves on the board of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. His visit was a conversation with CMS/W faculty member and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz.
