Patterns of the past Trends beginnen vaak klein en worden daardoor vaak over het hoofd gezien door organisaties en leiders. Het uitgangspunt van de auteurs is dat de leider verantwoordelijk is en keuzes maakt over de te volgen koers. Zij moeten inschatten wat de kans is dat een trend kan overgaan van, het kan gebeuren, naar het zal gebeuren. CEO's gaan bij trends de mist in, omdat: ze de indicaties van de trend volledig missen. De eigen ervaringen vormen een filter bij het bekijken van data. ze de trend ontkennen. Mensen hebben een hekel dat ze wordt gezegd dat ze iets belangrijks hebben gemist. ze de trend over-analyseren. Na een eerste analyse volgt er nog een analyse totdat duidelijk wordt dat de trend werkelijkheid is en ze er achteraan lopen. ze te slap reageren op een trend. Ze wachten op anderen en worden volgers. Het team krijgt geen middelen om aan de slag te gaan met de trend. De oplossing volgens auteurs, Provoke, ofwel uitdagen. Wat vooral neerkomt op actie ondernemen. DOE IETS. Ze komen met mooie voorbeelden zoals Netflix en een bedrijf dat de (onbewuste) keuze maakt op de oude voet door te gaan, om zo langzaam af te rollen. 2. On the importance of “If” vs “When” Er zijn grofweg twee fases in een trend, de ‘of' en de ‘wanneer' fase. Eerst is de vraag of het plaats vindt. Nadat de trend over een bepaalde hobbel is gegaan is de ‘of' fase voorbij, is er geen houden meer aan en krijg je de wanneer fase. Wanneer heeft het effect op mijn markt en bedrijf. Zo was er eerst de vraag 'of steeds meer mensen hun kabel op zouden zeggen', nu wordt dat steeds meer de vraag 'wanneer ze dat gaan doen'. Eerst wordt er nog gedacht dat het niet zo'n vaart zal lopen en onderzoeken ze hoe groot het probleem is. Ze isoleren de groep die opzegt. Dan gaan steeds meer mensen opzeggen en is de vraag wanneer de volgende groep opzegt. 3. Personal Patterns In dit hoofdstukken gaat het over een aantal vooroordelen (biases) die ons tegenhouden om actie te ondernemen wanneer we een trend zien. Beschikbaarheidsbias We hebben de neiging om te bouwen op voorbeelden waar je mentaal eenvoudig en snel toegang toe hebt. Vaak zien we rampen niet aankomen omdat het mentaal niet toegankelijk is op dat moment. Denk aan corona. Wat hierbij helpt is verschillende scenario's voor de toekomst uitdenken in teams met verschillende mensen. (scenarioplanning in het boek De levende onderneming) Egocentrisch vooringenomenheid We kennen meer gewicht toe aan data dat in overeenstemming is met ons standpunt.

And that's just one example of both individual and organizational biases that we think work together as a system to prevent change.Geoff Tuff: Best practices & orthodoxies05:08 - We are now living through, Steve and I believe, a time where we're shifting from a world that's governed primarily by linear change to one that's increasingly governed by exponential change. And with that comes a different set of operating rules, where the old playbooks just don't apply. In Provoke: How Leaders Shape the Future by Overcoming Fatal Human Flaws, renowned strategy consultant and best-selling author Geoff Tuff explains how people tend to act tentatively in the face of uncertainty, and shares the tools we need to do things differently. We still need human imagination to curate the AI experience. [26:15] There are five behaviors that make you a provoker, but you use each one differently based on context. [29:00] Geoff explains why the act of sailing and sailors tend to have a natural ability to lead during times of uncertainty. [34:30] Sports are zero-sum games. You either win or you lose. In business, it doesn't have to be that way. You can call your own shots. [37:45] The most complicated action to take is “activation” to rally those around you for maximum collaboration potential. The ability for any individual organization to own a space or to do it alone is declining. You have to be a partner in the ecosystem if you want to succeed. [39:50] If your people are scared about the unknown, the key to breaking out of this is by taking small steps.
