The Department of War realized it was dealing with a supply chain risk of vulnerable vendors; back in 2019 they launched the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification. The goal was to ensure defense contractors protected sensitive unclassified information. Over the years it has transitioned from being a "checkbox" compliance to moving way beyond the minimum to pass. During today's interview with Travis Goldbach from Coalfire Federal,  he gives us overview of how CMMC  has made the transition to building a security program that protects the mission, supports growth, and earns trust. Goldbach continue by stating the cybersecurity is going to impact just about everybody – from sales, to legal, to operations, to finance and even executive leadership. Travis highlights the importance of CMMC for acquisition, noting that many defense contractors are unprepared. CMMC 2.0, implemented in November 2025, simplified the framework from five levels to three, focusing on basic cyber hygiene, CUI protection, and advanced protection. He also discusses the impact of remote work and AI on CMMC readiness and the importance of a robust ecosystem of trusted partners for sustained compliance. Rather than detailing the number of controls in the varying levels of CMMC, the discussion moved on to the concept of documentation. The challenge Goldbach sees is the conflation of documentation with readiness. More must be added to documentation to make it viable. For example, companies need ownership, governance, and accountability in a repeatable process.

Santi García Cremades solicita que en el año 2025 se demuestren tres resultados matemáticos de calado casi mitológico. En primer lugar, pide que nos llegue al fin la demostración de la Hipótesis de Riemann, una afirmación que se relaciona íntimamente con la densidad de números primos. Básicamente, sabemos que la cantidad de números primos menores que N viene dada aproximadamente por el logaritmo integral de N; si la hipótesis de Riemann se demuestra cierta, podemos afinar "cuánto se equivoca" el logaritmo integral, cómo de buena aproximación es. Además, Santi también solicita que se demuestre la Conjetura de Goldbach, que dice que cualquier número par debe poderse escribir como una suma de dos primos. Y ya, abusando de Sus Majestades, pide también la demostración de la Conjetura de Collatz, que emerge de un pequeño juego numérico que todos podemos hacer en casa. Por su parte, Alberto Aparici pide dos cosas: en primer lugar, que se encuentre la primera ribozima autorreplicativa. Una ribozima es una máquina molecular hecha de ARN; una de las hipótesis sobre el origen de la vida es que el ARN fue la primera "materia no viva" que mostró características similares a las de la vida. En concreto, sabemos que existen ribozimas capaces de hacer copias de pequeños pedazos de ADN, pero no conocemos ninguna que sea capaz de copiarse a sí misma, que es lo que hacemos los seres vivos. La sospecha es que en los días en que se estaba cocinando la vida sí que existían este tipo de máquinas de ARN, y que después fueron sustituidas por proteínas, ADN y mecanismos más eficientes. Si logramos crear en el laboratorio una ribozima autorreplicativa no sería la prueba de que la vida empezó con el ARN, pero sí sería una indicación de que ése es el camino correcto. Además, Alberto también pide que en 2025 podamos ver, de una vez, una supernova en nuestra galaxia. La última que se pudo observar fue en el año 1604, pero sospechamos que en una galaxia tan grande como la Vía Láctea debe de explotar una supernova cada 50 años. La mayoría no son visibles porque estallan muy lejos y quedan ocultadas por el polvo y la porquería que hay en el disco de nuestra galaxia, pero a día de hoy, en el año 2025, ya tenemos las herramientas para ver *cualquier* supernova que ocurra en la Vía Láctea. Het boek is gebouwd op een Anglo Amerikaanse leest, wat logisch als de auteurs als adviseurs werkzaam zijn bij Deloitte en vooral C-level niveau werken in de corporate omgeving. Toch is het boek ook interessant voor kleinere bedrijven. De praktijk laat zien dat we slecht nieuwe trends herkennen en er goed op reageren. De auteurs geven de oplossing om uit te dagen en vooral iets te doen, doe iets! Bij kleiner bedrijven zit de ondernemer dichter op de markt, kan sneller veranderen en iets doen. Al is het daar soms lastig om niet telkens iets nieuws te doen terwijl het team de vorige verandering nog niet heeft verwerkt. If someone told me that Alignment Assistant suggested idea that sparked optimism in MIRI, I would think that we have exact amount of time it takes for someone to turn every tools needed to build such an Alignment Assistant to the creation of AGI (conditional on "this Alignment Assistant is not AGI itself"). I.e., if you bet on assistance of narrow AI in alignment research, you should also bet on finding solution quickly. Quick search for a solution requires an already existing plan. On the other hand, we are talking about a narrow AI, you can't just ask "solve alignment problem for me". You should ask specific questions, test pre-selected hypotheses, prove well-defined statements. Therefore, I think that those who want to use Alignment Assistants should outline this set of specific things as soon as possible. UPD: Thanks janus for the link, it helped me to clarify what I would like to see as a perfect answer. Let's suppose that your immediate answer is "brainstorming". Then the perfect specific answer is something like that: "In my opinion, the most narrow bottleneck in AI alignment is the lack of ideas about X, so I will brainstorm about it with Alignment Assistant." Extremely unrealistic example: "I have The Grand Theory of Alignment, but it critically depends on Goldbach conjecture, so I will try to prove it." My very (very) simplified model of Paul Cristiano's answer: "80% of alignment can be solved with ELK strategy, so we can make builder-breaker debate on (counter)examples for ELK between Assistant and ARC until we figure out the solution." In 1992, Hurricane Andrew ravaged South Florida. Prior to the hurricane, bassist Danny Lore was playing in the punk band Grover Snatch. But the hurricane caused some members to move away. Rather than replace them, he decided to start a new ska influenced punk band: Against All Authority. For months they practiced acoustically--there was no power in South Miami for a while. And as the band got going, they booked their own shows at the Kitchen Club in Coconut Grove. No one else would. Besides, being punk meant being an active participant in the scene. Today we talk to three members of South Florida political punk-ska band Against All Authority, whose records Destroy What Destroys You and All Fall Down are absolute classics. We walk through their entire entire career, get to the bottom of just what makes these guys tick, and find out why punk and ska are so important to them. We talk about 80s punk venue Cameo Theater (Same club that Cannibal Corpse played in the Ace Ventura Pet Detective), early rejected band names, their 1968 school bus that broke down at least 10 times on tour, and their legal battles with American Automobile Association. We also discuss issues with their labels, why they broke up in 2007 and what led to them reforming 15 years later. They also tell us a bizarre story that involves killer monkeys that escaped from a nearby laboratory!  Support the show

Abstract: To support perception, visual cortex transforms sensory-related input, creating neural activity patterns that represent features of the sensory world. These cortical input-output transformations can potentially be strongly influenced by local, recurrent connections between neurons, yet how recurrent connections affect transformations has been unclear. Here we study recurrent influences in mouse V1 by stimulating excitatory neurons and using simulations to determine which features of connectivity can explain the observations. We find that strong visual stimuli suppress many neurons, resulting in a salt-and-pepper pattern of neurons with suppressed and elevated firing. Stimulating excitatory cells optogenetically produces a similar salt-and-pepper pattern of suppression. Cells with suppressed firing are distributed across the cortex, though there is a surround region a few hundred microns from the stimulation center where suppressed neurons outnumber excited neurons. A balanced-state cortical model, with strong heterogeneous recurrent coupling and variability in neurons' inputs, replicates the observed firing rate distributions and dynamics, and also explains prior reports of suppression from single-cell stimulation. Together, the results show this cortical suppression arises via a recurrent network mechanism: excitatory input produces a diverse pattern of neural responses that is substantially different than the pattern of inputs. Die 35-Jährige grübelt nicht lange drüber nach, wie sie Familie, Job, Ehrenamt, ihren Sitz im Gemeinderat und ihre Leidenschaft für Sport unter einen Hut bekommt – sie macht einfach. Frauen sind in Bayerns Feuerwehren immer noch stark in der Minderheit. Warum das so ist und wie es sich ändern ließe, darüber spricht Eva Rußmann im Podcast mit den Main-Echo-Redakteurinnen Nina-Anna Beckmann und Moni Münch. Eine Herausforderung, vor der viele Feuerwehrfrauen irgendwann stehen: Aktiver Dienst auf Abruf lässt sich schwer mit der Mutterrolle vereinbaren. Before joining Deloitte, Goldbach was a partner at Monitor Group and head of its New York office. Goldbach helps executives and their teams transform their organizations by making challenging and pragmatic strategy choices in the face of uncertainty. He is an architect, expert practitioner, and teacher of the variety of strategy methodologies developed and used by Monitor Deloitte over the years.
