Our final look at the music of Star Trek puts us in the position of the show's music editors and composers. With so many classic episodes to get through, how did they stretch their music budget to cover an entire season? The music of Sol Kaplan, Joseph Mullendore, Gerald Fried and Fred Steiner is examined, and we also look at a series of clever music edits for tracked scores. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome all to the podcast! In this episode, I continue my mini-series entitled "TV Goes To The Movies", a topic in which I intend to explore TV shows that migrated over to the big screen. As expected, my focus is musically what was or was not carried over from the television episodes of a particular series to its respective theatrical feature, such as the main TV theme.   This time I open Channel D to examine "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." - a popular spy series which aired on NBC from 1964-1968. Its musical template was initially set by legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith, while still early in his career, and subsequently experienced many unexpected tonal shifts. Afterwards I discuss the eight "Man From U.N.C.L.E." "movies", each built from 2-part TV episodes and primarily released theatrically internationally, and lastly wrap up with the 2015 feature film, directed by Guy Ritchie, starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, with music composed by Daniel Pemberton.   Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00:00 THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Episode 61 : A Special Tribute to Composer Gerald Fried As time goes by, we lose some of the amazingly talented people who worked with Stanley during his film career, and we recently lost composer/conductor, Gerald Fried, February 17th 2023 to be precise, at the grand old age of 95. We spoke to Gerald in late 2018 when he was just 90 years young. He was one of the earliest collaborators of Stanley Kubrick, dating back to the very early 1950s. Gerald Fried, a native New Yorker, had scored almost 300 films and television shows in a career spanning over 70 years. His movie scores include such varied titles as Machine Gun Kelly for Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson's first feature film The Cry Baby Killer, The Killing of Sister George, Too Late The Hero & The Grisson Gang, all three for director Robert Aldrich. His TV credits include some of the most popular shows being produced at the time including M Squad, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Gilligan's Island, The Man From Uncle, Mission Impossible, Lost In Space, Police Woman and Star Trek! He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music with an Original Dramatic Score for the feature-length documentary Birds Do It, Bees Do it at the 1976 Academy Awards, up against several other notable composers with memorable scores. The Wind and the Lion from Jerry Goldsmith, Jack Nitzsche's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Bite The Bullet by Alex North, and the winner that year was……… John Williams for probably the most famous movie score of all time… JAWS. So Gerald was in great company that night. Gerald also won an Emmy for his work with Quincy Jones on the ground-breaking mini-series Roots from 1977. Having composed the scores for five of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films, Gerald is one of Kubrick's most frequent collaborators. Fried and Kubrick first worked together as a composer & director partnership, both at the age of just 23, on the short film Day of the Fight back in 1951, followed by four feature films, Fear & Desire, Killer's Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory. We released about 30 minutes of this interview back in January 2020, but now we present to you the entire three-hour interview in honour and respect of the late great, Mr. Gerald Fried. Making Music with Nami Melamud, "Strange New Worlds" and "Prodigy" Composer Nami Melamud is the composer for the wonderful scores on "Star Trek: Prodigy" and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," as well as the Short Trek episode "Q & A." Her knowledge and passion for music are matched by her enthusiasm and affection for this franchise. Nami told us about growing up in Israel and explained how her service in the IDF helped her when she arrived in Hollywood, the methods Nami uses to compose her masterpieces, scoring HBO Max's "American Pickle" with Michael Giacchino, which is sadly off the streaming service now (at least for the time being), Disney's "Far From The Tree," and some of her other work. From there, we jump into Star Trek as Nami tells us what she learned from fellow Trek composers Michael Giacchino and Jeff Russo, an in-depth explanation for the themes of some of the crew from Prodigy, merging history and modernity for the sounds of SNW, the language of music with "Children of the Comet" and playing with Gerald Fried's Vulcan melody in "Spock Amok," how the musicians recorded their music during the Pandemic, and much more.  NOTE: We recorded this during SNW season 1, so we were forced to be a bit vague while discussing things on that show – just to play it safe! Enterprise Incidents with Scott & Steve

During a diplomatic mission to prevent a war between two neighboring worlds, the Enterprise must transport Elaan, the Dohlman of Elas, to the planet Troyius, where she must marry the ruler of that planet in an effort to keep the peace. That's easier said than done, since Elaan is extremely volatile, demanding and difficult to deal with. That means trouble for Captain Kirk, who reluctantly takes it upon himself to teach her manners and customs before the Enterprise reaches Troyius. But unbeknownst to Kirk, Elasian women have a power that men cannot resist: a love potion hidden in their tears that will enslave any man who touches them. When Kirk does just that, he falls under her spell, and the entire mission is thrown into jeopardy. If that wasn't enough, the Enterprise is being trailed by a Klingon warship. Its motives: unknown. "Star Trek" meets Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" in "Elaan of Troyius," an outstanding third season episode that really does have it all: action, suspense, jeopardy, heart, humor and -- most definitely -- romance. "Elaan of Troyius" features stellar direction by writer-director John Meredyth Lucas, a stellar score composed by Gerald Fried and a fantastic performance by guest star France Nuyen. Enterprise Incidents with Scott & Steve

After his logical first officer is examined for displaying strange and bizarre behavior, Captain Kirk is informed that Mr. Spock will die unless he returns to his home planet of Vulcan to take part in an ancient mating ritual. Upon their arrival, Kirk and Dr. McCoy accompany their friend to a private ceremony that is presided over by a top Vulcan official, but the proceedings soon take a deadly turn when Spock is forced by his mate to fight another potential suitor to the death -- his friend and commanding officer, James T. Kirk. For loyal fans who helped turn Mr. Spock into the most popular character of the series, "Star Trek" could not have picked a better episode to launch its stellar second season, which rewarded them with their first trip to Vulcan. And more than five decades later, "Amok Time" remains one of the best and most beloved episodes of "Star Trek," thanks to a brilliant screenplay written by Theodore Sturgeon, an epic score composed by Gerald Fried and magnificent performances from the entire cast -- especially Leonard Nimoy, who gives what just may be his greatest performance as Mr. Spock. For the first time on TREK UNTOLD, we are joined by three guests! Up first, we speak with Angelique & Steven Fawcette, the creative team behind the new sci-fi parody movie and Star Trek homage, "Unbelievable!!!!!" which features over 40 actors from five different Star Trek series, along with Michael Madsen, Robert Davi, and Snoop Dogg. Oh, and did we mention a marionette Captain Kirk made by the same team who did the puppets for "Team America"? Yeah, that's there too. The Fawcettes talk to us about working with so many different Trek alumni, the kismet moment that led to Michael Madsen being in it, and give us some behind-the-scenes stories of making the film. Following that, we speak with Gerald Fried, the last living composer who worked on the original Star Trek series. At 92, Mr. Fried is just as sharp and has a lifetime of great stories, and came out of retirement to make the score for "Unbelievable!!!!!". Gerald composed five pieces for Star Trek for the episodes "Cat's Paw," "Shore Leave," Friday's Child," "The Paradise Syndrome," and the unforgettable and often-referenced "Amok Time" - yes, he made THAT song! His resume includes around 200 films & shows, and we discuss a few of these in addition to Trek, including scoring Stanley Kubrick's early films, Gilligan's Island, Roots, and more.  Check out Unbelievable!!!!! on Amazon Prime at this link here - https://amzn.to/2YVkHT7 Follow the Unbelievable!!!!! film on Social Media Below - https://twitter.com/adiffkindatrek https://www.facebook.com/officialunbelievablethemovie/ https://www.instagram.com/unbelievablemv/ Don't forget to subscribe to the show and leave a rating if you like us! Episode 33 : The Early Days... Stanley and Me : An Interview with Gerald Fried - Part 1 This is the first part of our interview with Gerald Fried. We spoke to him in late 2018, when he was just 90 years young. Gerald Fried, a native New Yorker, has scored almost 300 films and television shows in a career spanning 70 x years. His movie scores include such varied titles as Machine Gun Kelly for Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson’s first feature film The Cry Baby Killer, The Killing of Sister George, Too Late The Hero & The Grisson Gang all three for director Robert Aldrich. His TV credits include some of the most popular shows being produced at the time including M Squad, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Gilligan’s Island, The Man From Uncle, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Lost In Space and Police Woman. Gerald was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music with an Original Dramatic Score for the feature-length documentary Birds Do It, Bees Do it at the 1976 Academy Awards, up against several other notable composers with memorable scores. The Wind and the Lion from Jerry Goldsmith, Jack Nitzsche’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Bite The Bullet by Alex North, and the winner that year was……… John Williams for probably the most famous movie score of all time JAWS. So Gerald was in great company that night. Gerald also won a TV Emmy for his work with Quincy Jones on the amazing mini-series Roots from 1977. Having composed the scores for five of Stanley Kubrick's earliest films, he is one of the most frequent collaborators of Kubrick, and he was in fact the composer of the last Kubrick film that was entirely scored by a single composer. Fried and Kubrick first worked together as a composer/director partnership, as 21 (23) year olds on the short film Day of the Fight, back in 1951, followed by four feature films, Fear & Desire, Killer’s Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory. In this episode, being Part 1 of our interview with Gerald, we discuss the early years in New York when Gerald and Stanley were just coming up and starting to carve their careers out in the film business. Episode 17 : Burning Secret with Leon Vitali, Gerald Fried and Nathan Abrams. In this episode, we talk about a recently discovered screenplay on July 15th this year that made the headlines.  This wasn't just any screenplay. It was a script penned by Stanley Kubrick and Paths of Glory co-writer Calder Willingham, over 62 years ago and it had only been discovered when one of Stanley's earliest collaborators, the composer Gerald Fried, brought it to the attention of Kubrick fans the world over. The script is called Burning Secret and it's an adaptation of a 1913 novella by Austrian writer Stefan Zweig, and it tells the story of a young boy who is seduced by a man in order to get to the boys' mother. Thus far there have been three filmed versions of the original novella, the most recent being in 1988. The production was written and directed by Andrew Birkin, and it stars Klaus Maria Brandauer, David Eberts, and the legendary Faye Dunaway. But this particular treatment of the screenplay, by Kubrick and Willingham, was discovered by our friend, Nathan Abrams, a professor in Film Studies at Bangor University, while he was just doing research for his new book about Stanley Kubrick. Earlier in 2018, we had the pleasure of speaking with Stanley Kubrick’s long-time right-hand-man and good friend, Leon Vitali, incidentally, just a few days after this amazing news broke, so obviously we had to ask him for his take on what he knows about the screenplay. Production Credits : Hosted by Jason Furlong / Written by Stephen Rigg and Jason Furlong / Theme and original music written and performed by Jason Furlong / Produced and edited by Stephen Rigg

Film composer Gerald Fried is one of few individuals who knew Stanley Kubrick back in the day. In 1940s New York, he was starting his career as a musician, when Kubrick, just 16 at the time, came to work as a photographer at Look magazine. The two became close friends and collaborators; Kubrick was even go-to babysitter for Fried’s young son. Later, Fried would compose music for five of Kubrick’s films: Day of the Fight, Fear and Desire, Killer’s Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory. In our exclusive interview, Fried reveals their working process and recalls Kubrick the brilliant “super nerd” who “wanted badly to feel like a regular person … but was just too smart and too talented.”   Next up, we explore modernist Vienna, 100 years on from the deaths of four of its major protagonists: Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Otto Wagner, and Koloman Moser. Art critic and historian Kimberly Bradley, based in the Austrian capital, takes us back to the city’s bustling turn-of-the-century art scene and considers its legacy a century on under the country’s new, far-right nationalist government.   Finally, another centenary celebration as Bengt Wanselius, set photographer to Ingmar Bergman, talks behind-the-scenes with the prolific Swedish director and discusses the playful humor that coexisted with his profound examination of human relationships. The TASCHEN podcast is presented by Kevin Caners and produced by Eliza Apperly.

Star Trek has had a huge impact on pop culture throughout its 50 years. Many episodes have become a gold standard of television making, tackling issues of human interest and societal taboos. It has dealt with subjects such as love, death, sexuality, racism, racial and gender equality, and many more. Some episodes have even made lists of "Best episodes of television ever". And then there are episodes that fall short of the high bar that Star Trek is known for.  Some episodes miss the bar by a small amount, and others don't even come close to getting off the ground. One episode that sometimes shows up on worst of Trek lists is "Catspaw," the first episode produced for season two of the original Star Trek. In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Adam Drosin, co-host of Saturday Morning Trek, to discuss the episode "Catspaw" and its music composed by Gerald Fried.  Adam is one who champions and supports "Catspaw" with love, as a personal favorite episode, not deserving of its not-so-stellar reputation. The boys are back and they're tuned to 440Hz because, this week, they're bringing you an episode all about music. Week in Geek: Andrew discusses the recently released and amazing sourcebooks for the Doctor Who tabletop RPG (well, those released so far) while Dan reads mostly-academic articles about the Adult Swim show, The Venture Bros. Once More, With Feeling: To kick off the musical discussion, Dan and Andrew thought it made the most sense to talk about one of the most famous and popular musical episodes of television, which is, of course, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's, "Once More, With Feeling." The Evolution of Video Game Music: This week's main discussion has Andrew and Dan investigating the slow growth of video game music from short, limited––but catchy!––loops to becoming Grammy award-winning cinematic scores.  The Music of Erich Zann: Dan brings Andrew back to H.P. Lovecraft in one of his few music-centered tales of cosmic terror.  Question of the Geek: What is a song, album, composition, musician (or whatever) that you find the most interesting or compelling, for any reason? Leave your answers as comments at forall.libsyn.com. Be sure to also join the official Facebook and/or Google+ pages to join in on the conversations and much more! You may also e-mail the show at forallpod [at] gmail.com. For all intents and purposes, that was an episode rundown. Featured Music: -"Stayin' in Black" by Wax Audio -"Main Title" by Nerf Herder, orchestrated by Christophe Beck & Kevin Kleisch (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, "Once More, With Feeling") -"Baba Yetu" by Christpher Tin & Ron Ragin (from Civilization IV) -"Sad Violin Thing" by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (from The Proposition) -"Bucklers and Bonnets (Armorer Interior)" by Jake Kaufman (from Shovel Knight) -"The Ritual/Ancient Battle/2nd Kroyka" by Gerald Fried (from Star Trek episode, "Amok Time") -"Carry On My Wayward Son" by Gwar Music Referenced: -"The Music of Erich Zann" by Alexey Voytenko

Michael Giacchino Talk Star Trek: Live in Concert One of the most delightful part of the J.J. Abrams reboot of Star Trek has been the music. Michael Giacchino has continued the franchise's rich tradition of beautiful scores and has joined the Alexander Courage, Gerald Fried, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and Ron Jones as one of the great voices behind the visuals. StarTrek.com has published an interview with Giacchino in which the composer talks about writing music for Star Trek and of TV and film projects, what inspires him, his lifelong connection to Star Trek, and advice for those looking to compose for film in the future. Read the full interview at StarTrek.com. http://www.startrek.com/article/michael-giacchino-talks-star-trek-live-in-concert   Voyager Points the Way to Liberation Through Loss It's unusual to hear fresh perspectives on Voyager 20 years after the show premiered, especially those of someone watching the show for the very first time. In a new article on NPR.org, Ava Noë writes about her experience watching Voyager for the first time here in 2014, and the differences she sees between it and past Star Trek. A key point is liberation through loss, and talks about how—in an age of so much information clutter and noise—sometimes we need to get away from it all. Read the article and see if you agree at NPR.org. http://www.npr.org/blogs/13.7/2014/05/17/312993171/star-trek-voyager-points-the-way-to-liberation-through-loss   Patrick Stewart Grills Smithsonian Director on Star Trek While visiting the National Museum of American History to present four costumes from his latest X-Men film, which are being donated to the collection, Patrick Stewart began to protest the lack of Star Trek memorabilia at the Smithsonian. When it was pointed out to him that they do in fact have Spock's ears in the collection, Stewart insisted that he could give them some more things of real significance and that he would make it his personal mission. Melodic Treks: A Star Trek Music Podcast

Amok Time. The Vulcan marriage ritual gave us more than just epic fight scenes, it also gave us epic music. The theme from "Amok Time"—"The Ancient Battle/2nd Kroykah"—has transcended Star Trek and gone on to appear in numerous shows and films, ranging from Futurama to The Cable Guy. And as much as T'Pau would like to claim credit for this success, we really have Gerald Fried to thank. It was his creative genius and composition skills that brought the koon-ut-kal-if-fee to life through sound. In this episode of Melodic Treks we're joined by Drew Stewart and Mike Schindler of Standard Orbit for a cross-show exploration of "Amok Time." We team up to discuss the music as well as Gerald Fried and his inspiration. Then, tune in to Standard Orbit for a discussion and commentary of the actual episode.

Gerald Fried (b. 1928) and Gerald Heard (d. 1971): both were communicators of the non-rational, both were exponents of the subterranean echo. Fried did it through B-movie (and other) musical scores; Heard, through mystery novels and fantastic short stories. Jesus did it, too, through similes and parables. (If the second Gerald chose for his "nom-de-plume" 'H.F. Heard', I wonder what name Christ would have chosen, had His stories been published.)
