Prophecy Radio episode #131 brings Karen and Kristen to discussing the penultimate two chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. They also highlight some upcoming YA/Middle Grade books from RRP authors and talk some exciting other news, too. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:18:28) Check out this article about where Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 ranked on Disney+ last year! Karen compiled a list of current releases and upcoming releases from all of our favorite RRP authors. You can see that list here on Insta! While you're on the Insta, make sure to check out all the Dreamslinger swag that Karen received after signing up on Graci Kim's website a couple weeks ago! Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:24:55) Time to jump into chapter 32! Which is more upsetting: The gods treating their kids like pets or NOT BRINGING THEM LEFTOVERS?! Easy exit from Olympus Percy specifically mentions not telling anyone at camp about this, which explains why we never heard anything about this adventure before. Grover was the second-most stressed out he's ever been. Grover offers to run Annabeth's hat back to her so Percy can get to school ASAP. Godly parents can call you in late, too. We all love Paul Blofis. Poseidon keeps an eye on Percy… for better or for worse. It's time to talk about our favorite lines and favorite moments from this chapter! And now its chapter 33 time! Eudora stops Percy on his way to class. She is not a Poseidon fan, but Percy talks her off the ledge. Do-it-yourself recommendation letters (AKA blank godly paper) are all the rage. She expects some credit for her work in Percy's letter when he writes it. Blue jolly ranchers are the best, clearly. Percy hasn't done the reading, but he's still happy to be in class. It's nice to have a moment to appreciate the mundane. Time for our favorite lines and favorite moments from this chapter. Feedback (00:54:34) Email from Caoimhe, who shared some pics of her ADORABLE pup with us! Prophecy Radio episode #129 brings Karen and Kristen back together again to discuss the next two chapters of Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods. They also dip into a quick look at the brand new Percy Jackson cookbook, full of some truly unique recipes. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:06:59) Check out this fun Reel for a better glimpse at the PJO premiere last year Check out Graci Kim's website to sign up for the Dreamslinger league. Karen got a copy of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Official Cookbook as a late Christmas present. It's a perfect gift for Percy Jackson fans, especially if they like to throw parties for premiere weeks or in celebration of new books. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:21:21) Let's start off our Chalice of the Gods discussion with chapter 28, "It Starts Raining Toys" Gary is more than a little shell-shocked at Percy's choices. Percy takes a moment to reflect on his mom's parents, and what it would be like if they had survived. Gary wants to know why Percy offered hugs instead of muscle. We are grateful that Gary has agreed that Percy has more life to live. Gary has one more thing to ask Percy before he excuses himself in a poof! Not everyone is like the gods, and Percy gives Gary hope. Annabeth and Grover congratulate Percy on his brilliant gamble. A hula hoop falls from the sky, which means Ganymede has a message for our trio. Zeus has invited his mom over, which means, the chalice needs to find its way home... now. Our favorite lines and moments We also get to discuss Chalice of the Gods chapter 29, "I Teeter on the Precipice of Mount Brunch" Percy hates brunch. Like HATES it. What the heck do gods eat for brunch, anyway? No, Percy cannot FEDEx the chalice back to Ganymede. Major bummer. Annabeth heads to school, while Percy and Grover head to the Empire State Building. Grover knows someone who can get them into the brunch, as long as they find the side door to the Olympus kitchens. Percy tries on Annabeth's Yankees cap of invisibility. It makes him feel fuzzy and weird. We brainstorm better names for a satyr dating app. Satyr-er leave a bit to be desired. Grover shakes his woolmaker to distract the Empire State security guards so Percy can sneak onto the elevator. Percy worries the chalice may have a "one ring" thing going on. Our favorite lines and moments Feedback (00:53:35) Maria Steinmetz reached out on Instagram to let us know she signed up for a class with Roshani Chokshi. We hope its as amazing as we imagine! Check out our Spotify playlists if you're looking for certain episodes that correlate with certain chapter discussions. New York Times bestselling children's author Graci Kim thinks that adults should be picking up more 'middle grade' books - aimed at ages 8 to 14. She tells Nights why.
Prophecy Radio episode #106 discusses Chalie of the Gods chapters 9 through 11 in all of their glory, including how wistful and introspective Percy is these days! We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog posts, J. Maya's fate on Survivor season 45, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, and Graci Kim's newly announced series coming in 2025. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:02) Life has been pretty chaotic on every front lately, but we're doing our best to get back into the groove of the podcast. Thanks for sticking with us! We start the episode with a discussion of Rick's October 17 blog post, in which he discusses what's going on in Gaza at the present moment. This post had no promotion, and it was seemingly deleted and then reuploaded. Rightfully, fans have been critical of Rick for talking about Gaza and then transitioning into self-promotion. Please be aware there is A LOT of misinformation out there about what's happening right now, so do your due diligence and verify all the information you're receiving before passing it on. Tehlor Kay Mejia, Daniel José Older, and Sarwat Chadda have been speaking out a lot on their platforms about Gaza, Israel, and Palestine, so be sure to follow them for additional resources. Mark Oshiro is raising funds for Palestine through Books for Palestine. The auction is now live. Here is a list of Palestinian journalists on the ground in Gaza. If you have the ability to donate, charities like Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, and Palestine Children's Relief Fund are good places to start. You can also use 5Calls to talk to your representatives about a ceasefire. Rick also wrote a blog post on October 23 about the recent releases from Rick Riordan Presents, and some upcoming titles. We're particularly looking forward to A Drop of Venom, Winston Chu vs. the Wingmeisters, and It Waits in the Forest. Read Riordan has also been busy over the last two weeks, wanting you to catch up with Zyanya from Dawn of the Jaguar, as well as meet Admiral Paik from Fox Snare. They also wrote a cute little article about how to sneak into Camp Half-Blood. Graci Kim also announced the title and a vague release date for her next book, Dreamslinger. We read through the synopsis and confirm that we're really excited about this one! Kristen's Korner is back as we discuss the last two episodes of Survivor season 45 and J's fate on the island. The SAG-AFTRA strikes are ongoing, and we're waiting with bated breath to see what becomes of them. Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (00:36:54) Let's kick off our discussion with Chalice of the Gods chapter 9! Getting chased by chickens is, like, Karen's worst nightmare. Annabeth is SO SMART, and we love how single-minded she is in leading the trio. Grover is so helpful in this chapter, and we love seeing him be the person with all the helpful information. Did you know that Hebe and Hercules got married!? Did we just find out why satyrs age half as fast as humans!? Grover must go distract the chickens while Annabeth and Percy commit a party fowl. NGL, we kinda love Li'l Killer. Okay, the plan is to sing a song and beg for forgiveness. The backup plan is Plan Chick…whatever that means! This chapter may have contained Karen's single favorite joke in all of Rick Riordan's books. Let's move on to Chalice of the Gods chapter 10. It's time to belt out a tune by some guy. Why is the choice always the plan succeeds or we die!? This is 90% all Percy's fault. Percy has his priorities, and Annabeth has hers. When did you figure out what Plan Chick was? Annabeth really is a genius. This was SO CLEVER. The trio FINALLY get returned to their proper ages. It's now time for Chalice of the Gods chapter 11. Hebe sends the trio after Iris, down at the farmers' market. It's so cute how excited Percy is for a local quest, but also pretty sad how traumatized he is by being turned back into a little kid. Sally Jackson gets the Mother of the Century award. Do we have to worry about her getting older!? What was Percy like when he was a kid? Mark Oshiro's influence on Rick is SO OBVIOUS in this chapter. Yes, Percy, MILLIONS of people have dreamt of slipping into your life. Can Percy wash the dishes and play video games at the same time!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 107, in which we'll discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 12-14! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #98 discusses Rick Riordan Presents' latest release: The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi! We also catch you up on all the latest Rick Riordan news, including various upcoming releases like Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem, as well as Chalice of the Gods. This week, we also tackle The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 21, which is our first introduction to Aunt Kitty. Hey, she looks kinda familiar!? New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:00) Don't forget to check out Karen on Seaweed Brain Podcast! Are you going to one of the Chalice of the Gods book tour stops? Read Riordan wants you to meet Flordeliza from The Spirit Glass. You can also read an exclusive excerpt from Roshani Chokshi's latest novel. Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem releases on September 12. Chalice of the Gods also releases on September 26, and we give you an update on our plans for discussing the book. Kristen also gives us an update on the strikes and…Taylor Swift!? The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi (00:13:24) What is this book about? What did we think about the writing, and how does it compare to Aru Shah (the series)? You should definitely pick up The Last Tale of the Flower Bride if you liked this book. There are a lot of relatable themes in this book that we'll be discussing throughout this episode. We love a book with Graci Kim vibes! Okay, let's talk about Corazon Lopez, our hero for this adventure. Althea is awesome, but Emilio? He's the best dad EVER. How does Corazon compare to Aru Shah (the character)? Saso is undoubtedly the standout character in this book. Aunt Tina is super powerful and super suspicious. The Midnight Bridge market sounds like a spooky and amazing place to visit. You could say that Librarian Bulosan is a bit entian in nature. And then there's Leo (not that Leo!), who is super cute but definitely has some secrets of his own. Lastly, we have Flordeliza, who we'll have to talk more about later. Oh, and how could we forget to talk about the House!? The spoiler section starts at 00:38:57. Let's kick off this part by talking about the Library of Mirrors. Did you catch that Aru Shah reference? So we can blame mirrors for stealing our socks!? We get a proper quest for this adventure, and all seems right with the world. First stop? Visiting Mushu Tamatoa Bakunawa. We really loved how Corazon decided what was a fair trade for his blessing. Um, the manananggal is terrifying but also kind of cool? Next up, we visit the diwata and meet the Marias. The mystery around Leo deepens! Did the Marias purposefully send Corazon into danger, and were their intentions nefarious? Kristen totally knew that Corazon's dress was a clue to what was going on. We backtrack a little bit to talk about Flordeliza's backstory. Padre Francisco was, hands down, the worst person in this book. Did you guess the Leo reveal!? Okay, let's talk about the end of this book now. Aunt Tina is WHO!? The House ended up being so much more important than we thought. Ohhhhh, that's how the soul key was formed. This book really is about grief and acceptance. Saso just needs something to fight against! Would we like a sequel to this story? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (01:20:14) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 21. You do NOT want to mess with the Set animal. How does Carter's falcon eyesight work and what does it mean? Is there something to the fact that Carter's abilities are more physical? What do we think about Set and Set's animal being described as evil? Cats always land on their feet, and so do cat goddesses! It's kind of cool there are consequences to turning into birds too often. We love seeing the growth between Carter and Sadie! There's lots of aunts in this week's discussion! Being able to store stuff in the Duat seems highly convenient! Did you remember the bit about the locker from the beginning of the book? This was a well-balanced chapter! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 99, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapter 22 before doing some predictions for the rest of the book! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Author Graci Kim was inspired by stories of Korean mythology when she wrote her ‘magic infused' novels. She spoke to Cate Prestidge ahead of her upcoming appearances for Hamilton Book Month.
What happens when you tell a story that turns out to be an echo of some ancient wisdom? Graci Kim returns to the show for a special deep dive into the conclusion to her Korean-mythology-inspired fantasy trilogy. We explore how Korean mythology evolved, how she chose which versions of the various myths to recontextualize and how she discovered her legacy as a storyteller. Plus, we meditate on what it means to be Korean diaspora and how we reconnect with the loving mystery at the heart of the universe.
Steeped in ancient Korean mythology, driven by a plucky young heroine, and filled with action, suspense, and the possibilities of magic all around us, THE LAST FALLEN REALM is a work of fantasy and the perfect end to Graci Kim's Gifted Clans saga. New York Times best-selling author, Kim, is a Korean-Kiwi diplomat turned author who writes about the magic that is inside all of us. Riley Oh wasn't born into her family. Okay, so she's not the first Korean American girl to be adopted. But she wasn't born in Korea—or even on this planet. Though she might look and act like a typical ‘tween, Riley tumbled down to the earth as the last fallen star. Riley also wasn't born to be a witch—she's just a saram, a person without any magic. And she certainly wasn't born to be a leader. But now, the entire magical community believes that she and her recently adopted brother, Dahl Oh, were chosen to save the world. They're only thirteen years old, for crying out loud. They can't even drive yet, let alone lead an army of witches in a war against five vengeful goddesses destined to do something epic. Even though he looks a boy (despite his shockingly white hair) and acts like one too (he's obsessed with toilets), Dahl is the last fallen moon and Riley's soul-twin. To Dahl, it all seems like a great big adventure. But Riley feels as if the weight of three realms is on her shoulders. To win against the evil wrath of the goddesses, Riley must work together with her friends and find the strength to believe in herself.
Prophecy Radio episode #88 gets back to Egyptian mythology by doing a Deep Dive on everyone's favorite cat goddess, Bast. Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including the possibility that we could be getting a Chalice of the Gods sequel. This week, we also return to The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid by tackling chapter 12 and facing off with the scorpion deity Serqet. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:01:30) Fury of the Dragon Goddess by Sarwat Chadda got a Kirkus starred review! Read Riordan did a cute interview with Graci Kim. They also asked, “Who is the most powerful god or goddess in ther Riordanverse?“ DID YOU REMEMBER THAT THE NEW THE SUN AND THE STAR COVER GLOWS IN THE DARK BECAUSE WE DID NOT. Keep an eye on Rainbow Crate's socials for a possible reprint of The Sun and the Star with the new cover. The UK cover for Chalice of the Gods is spectacular, and we once again have to give major props to Khadijah Khatib. You can pre-order the exclusive edition from Waterstones. And if you want to see the original painting of the cover you can go to Khadi's Twitter. And we might've figured out what the mysterious book Rick is working on is. Variety reports that Disney and several other studios will not host panels at SDCC this year. Becky says Disney will still have a presence at the con, however. She also says she doesn't know anything about D23 yet. Deep Dive: Bast (00:17:04) We're super excited to talk about Bast, and—by association—Callie! We're already starting off on rough footing because we don't actually know the origins of her name. It makes a lot of sense that Bast is associated with Artemis. Weirdly enough, she started off as a lioness goddess of the SUN, not the moon. She's got some pretty recognizable family members. Bast has a lot of important roles in Egyptian society, which explains why she was so popular. Shoutout to Brendan Fraser in The Mummy! There seems to be some connection between Bast and alabaster. What symbols are usually associated with her? We didn't expect to see the word aegis again! Her transformation from a lion goddess to a domesticated cat goddess is super interesting. Can we not name deadly asteroids after the enemies of the sun god? Ancient Egyptians really, REALLY loved cats. Bubastis is such a cool name for a city, and it sounds like it was a fun place to hang out, too. Is it weird that an important component to Bast's temples was water? Karen wants more information on the festivals of Bast because they sound amazing. It makes so much sense that Bast is the first deity we really get to know in The Red Pyramid. Will she end up fighting Apophis? We hope Bast sticks around for all three books! Sources: Wikipedia | WorldHistory.org Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:41:15) This week, we're discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 12! Serqet is, like, SUPER creepy…but also a little awesome? Why is Sadie so drawn to help Zia, who is clearly holding her own just fine? How did Sadie know about the Seven Ribbons of Hathor? Regardless, Zia must be pretty powerful to be able to wield them. We wonder if Sadie's powers come from her mother and if it's a female lineage kind of thing. We already know who we want to play Bast in the Red Pyramid Netflix film. Kristen tries to make scorpions even scarier than they already are. Feedback (00:57:32) Thank you, Rachel, for sharing a picture of your cat! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 89, in which we'll discuss The Legend of Glynn Turman, and then read The Red Pyramid chapter 13! Prophecy Radio episode #86 discusses The Last Fallen Realm, the final book in Graci Kim's Gifted Clans series based on Korean mythology and folklore. Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick and Becky's birthaversary. Instead of our usual chapter discussion of The Red Pyramid, we have a fun chat with Graci Kim about her series, now that it's done, and what's coming up next for her. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:00:59) A very happy birthaversary to Rick and Becky, who celebrated their 59th birthday and their 38th year of marriage on June 5. Rick even wrote a blog post about it, which included some pretty fantastic pictures. Congratulations to Charlie Bushnell, who just graduated high school! Brave + Kind Books is re-streaming the Atlanta The Sun and the Star event on June 12 at 5pm ET. There are still signed book available, and they'll even ship internationally! We also announce the countries of the people who won our international giveaway! This Hollywood Reporter interview doesn't have a lot of new info, but it's still nice hearing Rick talk so passionately about combating the racism Leah has experienced since her casting. Read Riordan has a whole article on the bulgae from The Last Fallen Realm. If you missed the Last Fallen Realm virtual event from Mysterious Galaxy, you can watch it on YouTube and even order a copy of the book with a signed bookplate! Karen goes through some of the highlights from the event in case you don't have time to watch the whole thing yourself! The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim (00:16:25) What is this book about? We give you a very short synopsis. Read Karen's Last Fallen Realm book review! This book takes place in Vegas! Have we ever been there? Reality is collapsing, and even though it's cool to see the Godrealm's version of our stores, it's not a good thing! People are so skeptical, they didn't think any of what was happening was actually real. Everyone is back for this book, and it was a lot of characters to keep track of! Did anyone else vibe something more between Dahl and Taeyo? We really love how Riley's parents adopted Dahl into the family. We get to meet the other goddesses in this book, and they're pretty interesting! Do we have a favorite? We're kicking off the spoiler section at 00:31:19. What did we think of the Water Dragon Goddess? And we finally get some answers about Hattie! It was really beautiful seeing Hattie support Riley and help her combat her imposter syndrome. We would TOTALLY have Moon Bunny ears if we could. The mini golf tournament had total Alice in Wonderland vibes. How useful would it be if we could fold space?? We absolutely loved the bulgae and what the second trial ended up being. If you've watched The Good Place, you've heard of the Trolley Problem. Emmett and Riley finally admit how they feel about each other. We feel so BETRAYED by what the Mayor did in this book. Let's take a moment to pour one out for Dahl. Did anyone see that Taggy reveal coming? Okay, it's time to talk about the ending of The Last Fallen Realm. Kristen has an alternate ending—what do you think!? We don't like being sad, but that doesn't mean this ending didn't have its merit. WE TOTALLY DIDN'T ALMOST CRY WHILE WE WERE RECORDING THIS EPISODE. Where do all the rest of the characters end up? This book made us feel a little bit better about the world, and honestly, what more could we ask for? Interview with Graci Kim (01:12:10) Check out the written interview here, in case you want to follow along! The first thing we want to know is…how is Graci doing now that the Gifted Clans series has come to a close? What were the challenges of writing The Last Fallen Realm? Had Graci ever been to Vegas before? We learn why Riley Oh dealt with so much imposter syndrome in this book. Was it difficult to balance Hattie and Riley's personalities? Is Hole-in-One-Riley based on Graci's real life!? Let's talk about all the wonderful food in this book! Why is the Tree of Life such a consistent symbol across multiple cultures? The spoiler section for these questions starts at 01:34:52. Okay, we've gotta talk about the mayor's betrayal. Graci explains why she ended Riley and Dahl's story like that, and the surprise she came across after she drafted this book. Has she thought about Riley's life after this book at all? Would she revisit this world at some point down the line? Graci also talks about how Rick Riordan Presents has started to change the publishing world. Would Graci ever be involved in an adaptation of her series? Lastly, she gives us an update on the new series she's working on! Stick around to listen to us discuss a few of her answers and give our input! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 87, in which we'll discuss Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older, plus an interview with the author himself! Prophecy Radio episode #85 discusses The Last Fallen Moon, the second book in Graci Kim's Gifted Clans series based on Korean mythology and folklore. Plus, we tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including an update on the WGA strike and the fact that the official Percy Jackson and the Olympians Twitter account finally posted after four months of silence. This week, we're also reading The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid chapter 11! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:02:35) Happy birthday (and happy Pride Month) to Piper McLean! The official Percy Jackson and the Olympians Twitter account finally broke their four-month silence to tell us…nothing. Becky gave us a little more info about the WGA strike and what mini-rooms are. Oh, and Read Riordan wants us to meet the water dragon goddess from The Last Fallen Realm. The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim (00:14:29) We're so excited to be talking about this book this week, especially with the next one right around the corner. Don't forget, you can read Karen's Last Fallen Moon book review from last year. Also be sure to check out the interview we did with Graci Kim (which also links to the podcast episode if you'd like to listen instead)! So…what is this book about, exactly? This book starts off rough—everyone is so mean to Riley and her family. Why did Riley insist on going it alone!? How amazing was the depiction of the Spiritrealm? It's interesting to think about how stories and mythologies change over the years and WHY they change. Torture is still torture, even when it's disguised as fun. We talk a lot about the changes to Hell, and why Graci made them. Karen once again talks about the brilliance of shared universes. Hattie and Riley's relationship has been so wonderful to experience. We talk about some of the new characters we get to meet in this book, but we'll save the details for the spoiler section. Speaking of…the major spoilers start at 00:45:34! Let's talk about that forgotten underwater kingdom, shall we? The cosplaying protestors were pretty great, and we have a very important question for our listeners. What about all the creatures we meet in this book? Riley goes through so much in this book! Let's break it all down. Was Hattie being selfish and impulsive? Was Riley being too self-sacrificing? Can you believe they actually got arrested!? Were we surprised by the mayor? Shout-out to that edible forest! We can't wait to see the food in Fallen Realm. Of course the one thing that can destroy the snake is the one thing they gave away! The culmination of the story in this book is pretty huge. Let's talk about Hattie's big reveal. That hairpin was important after all! Thank goodness they got the memory book back! Will there be more Emmett in the next book? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (14:31:37) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 11! Do you know what a group of scorpions is called? It was really great for Sadie and Carter to talk about the difficulties in their lives, even if their conversation got cut off. What were our first reactions to Zia Rashid? Would you have fun memorizing all those auspicious times? We want a fire-breathing staff! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 86, in which we'll discuss The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, plus an interview with the author herself! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. We discuss all the latest Riordanverse news, including some upcoming Rick Riordan Presents releases, like The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, as well as one of Rick's Goodreads answers we thought made for an important discussion. This week, we're also returning to our The Red Pyramid discussion with chapter 10! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:02:48) The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro is still on the NYT bestsellers list! Check out the current list of the international publishers for The Sun and the Star. Kristen talks about Libby and the fact that they have a dyslexic font option! We discuss Mark's original map for The Sun and the Star. Apparently, Taylor Swift(‘s concert experience) gave Rick COVID. Thanks to Publishers Marketplace, you can read excerpts from A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel and The Spirit Glass by Roshani Chokshi. Read Karen's Last Canto of the Dead book review. Read Riordan did an interview with Daniel José Older. You can also read Karen's The Enchanted Hacienda book review for J.C. Cervantes' latest novel. Plus, our interview with J.C. Cervantes talks about the book, as well as Rick Riordan Presents, an upcoming Disney project, and Dawn of the Jaguar. Be sure to pre-order The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, out on June 6. Read Riordan has also done a spotlight on two characters from the upcoming book, Areum and Taggy. Make sure you sign up for one of the Last Fallen Realm virtual events! According to Variety, Walker Scobell joined the cast of an upcoming movie! Rick Riordan answered a question on Goodreads about fans drawing white Annabeth. The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid discussion (00:53:31) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 10! If we could put out a cat signal, we would sleep in a pile of cats whenever we're sad. They're heading toward Central Park, and the entrance to the Underworld is RIGHT THERE. Bast isn't really good at making people feel calm. It's kind of weird to think your clothes could still carry residual life auras. The concept of good vs. evil and order vs. chaos is so interesting. Bast's combat magic is pretty epic. And now we want to watch Pacific Rim. If you're in an area with scorpions…be careful. Let's learn more about Serqet! Do you know the temple in the Met that Bast referenced in this chapter? Feedback (01:16:31) Friend of the Podcast Ian Davies finished TSATS and started listening to our discussion episode! Thank you for tuning into Prophecy Radio, Shannon, and happy early birthday! Prophecy Radio episode #64 takes a look ahead at all the projects we know are coming up in 2023, as well as our goals for the year as a podcast! This week, we're skipping the news since we're recording ahead of time, and we'll catch up on that in a couple weeks. But don't worry! We're still going to reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. Looking ahead to 2023 (00:02:07) On January 10, The Sword of Hades will be re-released with a The Sun and the Star sneak peek. Are you going to pre-order it? One of the biggest books to come out this year will be The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro, which will release on May 2. Here's everything we know about The Sun and the Star so far. We speculate what we might get when we read Chalice of the Gods, which comes out on September 26. And let's not forget the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! What books can we look forward to in 2023? First up on the list is Winston Chu vs. the Whimsies by Stacey Lee, who will be releasing her first book under RRP. We loved Ballad & Dagger, so it should come as no surprise that Last Canto of the Dead by Daniel José Older is at the top of our lists for 2023. Next up, we have The Last Fallen Realm by Graci Kim, which will wrap up the Gifted Clans series. Roshani Chokshi is writing another book for RRP, this time about Filipino mythology! Obviously we can't wait for the second book in the Serwa Boateng series by Roseanne A. Brown. And maybe it won't be the last! We really need to read City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda…if only so we can read Fury of the Dragon Goddess. This fall, we can also expect Pahua and the Dragon's Secret by Lori M. Lee to hit store shelves. Moko Magic by Tracey Baptiste also promises to be great, and we wonder if there will be any similarities to Ballad & Dagger. And even though we haven't covered the books yet on the podcast, we're excited for the next book in the Shadow Bruja series by J.C. Cervantes. Many of the Rick Riordan Presents authors have OTHER books coming out outside of the imprint. Which ones are we most looking forward to? First up, Roshani Chokshi gives us a Valentine's Day treat with The Last Tale of the Flower Bride. And then there's Tehlor Kay Mejia's Lucha of the Night Forest, out on March 21. And then there's Into the Light by Mark Oshiro, which has mushrooms on the cover, so you know it's going to be cool. What announcements for Percy Jackson and the Olympians do we think we'll get in 2023? They have to tell us who Zeus and Poseidon are eventually, right?? Could we get a trailer by the end of the year? Will Percy Jackson attend SDCC? Will they be at D23 again? What if they did monster reveals!? Make sure you check out Aryan's show on Paramount+, Adventures in Wonder Park. When could we expect a season 2 greenlight? As far as the Red Pyramid film coming to Netflix, we can probably expect the script to be finished. But we know it's not coming out in 2023, so we need to be patient! What about a director? Or any casting announcements? What's Prophecy Radio hoping to accomplish next year? We want to bring as many exclusives to you as we possibly can! But we're super excited to start The Kane Chronicles. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 18. How can Clarisse survive being turned into a block of ice? Chiron standing in between Kronos and Mount Olympus is pretty badass. Annabeth gave it a good old college try, but it just wasn't enough. How could you not LOVE AND RESPECT Nico di Angelo until the ends of the Earth after this scene?? Seeing Demeter and Persephone in action was pretty cool. And speaking of badasses—Paul and Sally can totally handle their own! Why does Ethan Nakamura have such a place of honor amongst Kronos' army? We need more fanart from the Battle of Manhattan! Feedback (01:19:49) A positive guy says he's really looking forward to Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Fury of the Dragon Goddess. Meanwhile, Phoebe's got her heart set on The Sun and the Star. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 65, where we'll discuss the Lightning Thief illustrated edition, as well as the graphic novel! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Prophecy Radio episode #63 takes a look back on the last year to reminisce about all the announcements we witnessed and all we've accomplished in 2022! We also talk about the most recent news in the Riordanverse, including the livestream and the winner of our art giveaway, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 17. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:45) Thank you to everyone who tuned into the Percy Jackson for Good Winter Solstice Fundraiser! We let you know what kind of content to expect from us in the coming weeks. Shoutout to @JessycaJill, who won our art giveaway, and to @Hellredsky, for working with us on that! Graci Kim's tweet from the other day was bittersweet, and we take a moment to recognize all she's accomplished. Read Riordan also gave us some tips for how to throw a Camp Half-Blood-themed holiday party. End of the year round-up and reflection (00:10:26) Once again we really love that we switched over to one chapter an episode. We're very proud of our episode titles, but which ones are our favorites? What's the most interesting thing we learned in our pursuit of increasing our knowledge of mythology? Our memories are so bad, but we did think of a couple fun facts we enjoyed learning. And it's not just Greek mythology that fascinated us! The books Karen was talking about were Skin of the Sea and Soul of the Deep by Natasha Bowen. It's so hard to pick a favorite interview since everyone has been lovely, and we managed to talk about pretty much all of them. In particular, make sure you go back and listen to our chat with Roseanne A. Brown and Roshani Chokshi but also Daniel José Older. There are so many talented people in the Percy Jackson fandom, but we have to shout-out a couple of our favorite artists we've discovered this year. There's definitely been an Annabeth Chase art renaissance, and we are so here for it. All of the Sun and the Star artwork has been incredible, but a special shout-out to @AlessiaTrunfio (Kristen's choice picks: here and here). Obviously Sarah (@Hellredsky) is one of our favorites, and Soia also has a special place in our hearts. And how could we forget about @Velinxi. Were you as surprised by the length of our longest episode as we were? What about our shortest episode? Did we ever get under an hour? We got a lot of big announcements this year, but which ones stick out in our minds the most? It's so hard to concentrate when there's so much awesome Percy Jackson news in the world. Chalice of the Gods was a really shocking announcement, and we're still recovering. Surprise, surprise, we had a lot to talk about this episode. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:54:21) We're here to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 17. We're coming up on the end of this book pretty quickly!! We don't want to talk about Silena dying OR the fact that she was the traitor, but we have to. This was a great twist to the book, and it would've been hard to guess. Are we upset with Silena for being the traitor? CLARISSE DRAKON-SLAYER, FIRST OF HER NAME. The Blessing of Ares is super interesting, especially because it makes Clarisse momentarily invulnerable. Who does Percy summon with Mrs. O'Leary? Okay, why was Leneus' death so sad??? Aryan is going to be so great as Grover. We can see it so clearly. That elevator ride was a beautiful full circle moment. Is the Empire State Building guard mortal? We have another Will Solace sighting! How do we feel about Annabeth's confession that she no longer thinks Luke can be saved? Okay, hear us out: Rachel is Jacob. Percy is Bella. Mount Olympus is Renesmee. It would've been nice to see a conversation between Annabeth and Rachel after this moment. The moment at the hearth is what the sand dollar scene should've been like! Thank goodness Poseidon decided to listen to Percy. Kronos is near! Feedback (01:38:09) Daphne Olive totally agrees with us that Frozen II is the best Frozen. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 64, which will take a look ahead at everything coming in 2023! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. In THE LAST FALLEN MOON, we meet again with the protagonist Riley Oh, who has come to realize that life as the Godrealm's last fallen star is not all it's cracked up to be. Her new divine heritage doesn't even come with cool magical powers; half of her friends and family (including her parents) can't remember her; and to top it all off, the entire Gom clan is mad at her for killing the Cave Bear Goddess and stripping away their healing abilities. But when their anger boils over and a group of witches curse Riley's home, she knows it's up to her to restore magic back to her clan even if it means sneaking into the Spiritrealm. Luckily, Riley has some backup. Along with her sister, Hattie, Riley meets Dahl, a heaven-born boy with shockingly white hair and a fondness for toilets who might not be telling the whole truth about who he is. Together they'll fight vicious monsters, discover dark underwater worlds, and race to save the land of the dead from a fate that no one could have foreseen. And this time, Riley won't let anything get in her way. Because she can't shake the feeling that something terrible is coming their way and the gifted community is going to need all the powers they can get.

This week on Prophecy Radio, Karen and Kristen discuss the latest casting additions to Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation, including Chiron, Mr. D, Mrs. Dodds, Sally Jackson, and Gabe Ugliano. In addition, the hosts once again tackle all the latest news across the Rick Riordan Universe (including Rick Riordan Presents) as well as return to their Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth review with chapters 7 and 8. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:50) We're kicking off this week's episode with Rick's June 12 blog post. It's always good when Rick reminds us how complicated it is to make a TV show! What's an average day like for Rick and Becky? It's awesome to hear they're still doing rigorous COVID testing. Can you believe how many sets they've already gone through!? Rick is ALWAYS working on stuff—including a new book! Episodes are constantly getting tweaked, but this is a good thing. We once again need to recommend the behind-the-scenes documentary for Frozen 2. Rick also lets us in on some industry secrets. The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim is out in the world and getting translated into Polish, Turkish, and Italian! Don't forget to listen to our Graci Kim interview from last week! We saw some treetops and got very excited. BTW, we're not going to speculate about cast members (you can visit @updatespercy for that) Read Riordan had a queer characters article go up, and we talk about why it was taken down. Maybe Moon Knight could raise interest in the Kane Chronicles adaptation! Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast (00:27:17) Stay up to date with all of the Percy Jackson TV show cast announcements right here. First up, Virginia Kull! Despite the fact that our dreams were dashed, we're really excited to see her in this role. It's very easy to love and empathize with Sally as a character. What do we know her from? Thank goodness she chose to become an actor instead of a doctor! We're still riding high about the fact that we got Jason Mantzoukas right! Even Rick thinks he's perfect for this role. He's also been in a MILLION projects, so there's plenty of proof he can play a character like this one. And who knew he was an accomplished jazz drummer!? Megan Mullally as Mrs. Dodds wasn't who we were expecting, but we're VERY excited about this. Her role on Will & Grace is iconic, but she's been in plenty of other projects, too. She and her husband also have a podcast! Glynn Turman has had a legendary career, and we are in awe of everything he's accomplished. He's also pretty much a real-life Chiron without the horse body. We get excited about the roles we've seen him in, then talk once again about his first prominent role and the relationship he'll probably build with Walker. And then there's Timm Sharp, who is probably a cool dude even if he's playing a terrible character. He's been in some not-so-family friendly roles, but he's clearly a funny guy. We'll do another episode like this when more casting drops! Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (00:54:37) It feels so good to be back to our chapters! Let's start with Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 7. Kampê is a super old monster and that makes her even more scary! Briares is interesting and sad. Thank goodness for Paul Blofis. Poor Tyson was a bit disappointed, but we love seeing the growth in his and Percy's relationship. Long live Dippin' Dots, the ice cream of the future! It's time to visit a demon dude ranch in Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 8. Blanket pronunciation apology! The idea of immortality and the fact that it's not a guarantee is so interesting. Percy and Annabeth's friendship is so healthy and beautiful. Prophecy Count #19! Triple G Ranch is kind of an awful place but the animals are awesome! Geryon is not an easy guy to imagine. It was nice to see Nico, but he's definitely going through some stuff. Who paid to keep Percy and the others safe? So. Much. Poop. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 38, where we'll do a Monster Guide on hellhounds! This week on Prophecy Radio, Karen and Kristen discuss The Last Fallen Star (with a designated spoiler section) by Graci Kim, the first book in the Gifted Clans series. Then they get to interview the author about the second book in the series, The Last Fallen Moon! There will be no Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapters to review this week, but there is plenty of news in the Rick Riordan universe to discover, including the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast members on Disney+. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:29) Filming is officially underway, and we will never not be excited about this. Of course Rick updated his blog with new Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast members on the exact same day we recorded our predictions! We run through all the new cast members fairly quickly because we'll be doing a more in-depth discussion next week! Make sure you bookmark our Percy Jackson cast article. Jon Steinberg had a chat with The Wrap about the Disney+ Percy Jackson adaptation. We want merch! Steinberg has promised that this show will be for everyone—new fans and old; tweens, teens, and young adults (and we think adults, too!). Keep your eye out for the new blog post coming soon from Rick. We have some birthdays to celebrate! Have you seen the Victo Ngai limited edition prints of the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians book covers? Percy Jackson has been on the NYT bestsellers list for HOW long?? Graci Kim had a chat with fellow author Xiran Jay Zhao about Chinese and Korean mythology. Make sure you check out Read Riordan to meet Dahl and Bada. We take the soul animal quiz! Make sure you tell us your soul animal! The Last Fallen Star by Graci Kim (00:31:43) Check out Karen's The Last Fallen Moon review on Subjectify on June 14. Kristen gives us the general plot of The Last Fallen Star. We should probably kick off this discussion by talking about Riley Oh. Riley is adopted, but she's 100% part of the Oh family, even if she doesn't always fit in. Sometimes there are downfalls to listening to audiobooks. Hattie is a pretty great sister, but she can be a bit reckless. But Karen really loves their dynamic. To balance out all that recklessness, we have Emmett Harrison. He's not big on magic or emotions, but he does love to bake. They say that Karen is still trying to bake caramel cookies, even to this day. We need to start getting t-shirts made. Riley's parents are pretty great, but boy did Riley have a tragic childhood. What IS Boris, exactly? Jennie is an interesting character because she starts off pretty stereotypically mean, but then gets a good amount of backstory. Then there's the Cave Bear Goddess, who's the patron saint of the Gom clan. We find out her origin story, but that's gonna be it for now. This is your warning for our spoiler section! Spoilers start at 00:53:56, so skip to the next section if you want to avoid them! Okay, now that it's safe, let's talk about…the Horangi Clan. Sora is an important character, but she didn't stand out as much as the others. Austin's powers are pretty cool. But really we just want to talk about Taeyo. Hopefully there's no blood-bending in his future. And yeah, remember when we mentioned the Cave Bear Goddess? She is very naughty!! This book kept getting worse and worse for Riley, but thankfully Hattie is okay. And Karen says that The Last Fallen Moon has a bit more happy stuff in it. Graci Kim interview (01:10:41) Thank you, Graci, for joining us today to talk about The Last Fallen Moon! You KNOW Graci has some go-to snacks when she's writing. Unlike a lot of people, Graci actually enjoys being told what she needs to fix in her manuscript. What were Graci's personal and professional goals when she set out to write the Gifted Clans series? She also tells us her (current) favorite story from Korean mythology. Second books in a series can be tough, but did Graci have any trouble with Fallen Moon? Is Hattie and Riley's relationship based on Graci's own relationship with her family? You know we also had to ask her about all the magical food that shows up in these books! And we find out why Graci decided to restructure the hells (and it might not be for the reason you think). Will we ever get a giant Riordanverse crossover story? Graci also surprises us with her pick of a godly parent from Greek mythology. Which Rick Riordan Presents book would she love to live inside? And how does she feel about cooking/baking competition shows? Graci also hints at where The Last Fallen Realm will take place. She also tells us the series she'll be working on next! Feedback (01:42:12) We will never NOT take a chance to talk about our awesome logo. Rachel has been reading lots of Rick Riordan Presents books (yay!). Who would we want to voice Kronos in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 37, where we'll do an in-depth discussion of the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then try (and fail) to get through the rest of their fancasts before any official announcements, as well as review Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapters 5 and 6. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:20) Filming began the day we recorded this—June 2! Becky says she saw some of the test shots, and Annabeth looks great. According to Knight Edge Media, Simon Chin has been cast in a minor role, so we speculate about who he could be. Some of the Percy Jackson crew worked on another show called The Old Man, which will stream on Hulu. Kristen gets up on her soapbox for a moment about shows related to drugs. Don't worry, we get back to the Percy Jackson-related fare pretty quickly with Aryan Simhadri's upcoming project, Trevor: The Musical, which will stream on Disney+. Have you read the highlights from Rick Riordan and Daniel José Older's Instagram Live over on Read Riordan? HUGE congratulations to Graci Kim for hitting the NYT bestelling paperbacks list for The Last Fallen Star. Percy Jackson and the Olympians final fancasting (00:13:20) We're trying to fit in as many fancasts as we can before they do an official announcement! (Edit: We failed.) We're still rooting for Melissa Ponzio as Sally Jackson, but we've got a few contenders as far as warm motherly figures go. Karen really struggled with finding someone for Gabe, but after a moment's hesitation, the floodgates opened for Kristen. Both of us have trouble imagining what Nancy Bobafit looks like, but Karen had the idea to do a bit of stunt casting for this role. What do you think? Mrs. Dodds needs to be that ancient, sinister math teacher whose classroom you never want to visit. The only problem is that everyone in Hollywood is beautiful! If there's one thing for sure, Chiron needs to be able to pull off tweed. Karen can't take credit, but we know the perfect person to play Mr. D. But Kristen's pick is also pretty fantastic. Somehow, we both managed to pick the same person for Clarisse. But, like, SHE WOULD BE PERFECT. Okay, Karen's pick for Luke is a little different, but hear her out! Kristen's pick looks a lot like how we picture Luke, though. Medusa could be another great role for some stunt casting, and we agree she should be played by an actress with super curly hair. Last but certainly not least, we've got Charon. He's canonically a Black man, so we'd want to see them stick with an actor who can fill that role, but we've got some alternatives, too. Check out our Percy Jackson and the Olympians casting page! Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (01:01:25) It's time to talk about Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 5! Kristen felt the need to clarify what Nico uses to raise the dead. We're already up to Prophecy Count #18! Uhhh, Luke is a little too powerful right now. And Kelli remains super creepy. How does this whole fountain thing work? What does it mean that Nico is looking for a second opinion? We get to meet THE Theseus. Why did the fountain image glow so brightly?? Percy needs to go eat a Happy Meal RIGHT NOW. Thank goodness Chiron doesn't trust Quintus either. Now it's time for Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 6. Is this opening scene about Roman gods and architecture a hint to Heroes of Olympus? How do you pronounce Janus? Shout out to Buffy episode 2×06! What are Janus' pronouns?? Is everyone else afraid of Hera? If not, you should be. Why did Annabeth rush through her wish!? What does Percy know!? Grover is probably glad Tyson is around after all. And Annabeth really needs to stop telling the Labyrinth everything on her mind. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 36, where we'll discuss The Last Fallen Star by Graci Kim, as well as interview the author herself! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then discuss our What If…? season 3 scenarios—aka the Titan's Curse edition—as well as review Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapters 3 and 4. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:00:54) Read Riordan tells us what to do in the event we lose our divine weapon. It's amazing to see how many Rick Riordan Presents books you can read to celebrate AANHPI month! Who doesn't want some PJOTV news!? We recently found out Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 1 will start filming on June 2. We also learned they recently did a table read and that Becky is SUPER excited for the actor playing Chiron. Social media is great for BTS videos and pictures. Make sure you're following the Percy Jackson and the Olympians cast. But it's smart to keep in mind that not every kid they're hanging out with is going to be on the show. James Bobin is testing the cameras, and even that makes us emotional. Mark Oshiro says the Solangelo book is done with the major edits! We also learned about how long it is, and we are so excited! Did you see the trailer for Idris Elba Leah's new movie, Beast? Mark your calendars! The Last Fallen Moon by Graci Kim now has a new release date. What If…? season 3—Titan's Curse (00:19:44) You can listen to What If…? season 1 on Prophecy Radio episode #9 and What If…? season 2 on Prophecy Radio episode #23. Thanks, Rachel, for reminding us about doing one for Titan's Curse! Should we do an episode about how they could've improved the movies with a Titan's Curse adaptation? This book has a lot of pivotal moments and makes for a great What If…? episode. Karen wonders what if…Zoë had survived? Thalia would be the likely target for the one dying at their parent's hand, but what if it was Percy instead? Kristen wants to know what if…Dr. Chase was a terrible father? This could have major ripple effects down the line. Karen now needs to know what if…Percy never met Rachel Elizabeth Dare at the Hoover Dam? This might not have made as much of an impact down the line, but would Percy and Annabeth have gone on their date!? Now Kristen is curious what if…Luke let Annabeth die? We're gonna go ahead and just say no to this whole scenario. Fast-forwarding to Karen's next question: What if…Luke had died at the end of the book? Who would've become Kronos' vessel? Kristen's actually got a nice one now: What if…Nico didn't blame Percy for Bianca's death? Would it have taken a lot longer to find out who Nico's godly parent was? Thank you to everyone who wrote in their own What If…? scenarios! What…if Luke had been the one turned into a tree? What if…Percy had gone missing instead of Annabeth? What if…Nico, Bianca, and Percy had never gone outside with Dr. Thorne? What if…Zoë had killed Atlas? What if…Nico snuck away on the quest like Percy? Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (00:56:52) We're so happy we're back to reading our chapters for the week! It's time to talk about Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 3! We finally find out what Clarisse's secret quest was! By the way, we're totally here for this Clarisse and Annabeth friendship. Luke trying to navigate the labyrinth is…not a good thing. Rick's concept of Ariadne's string is really interesting here. Pan being trapped in the labyrinth would make SO much sense. We are totally here for Annabeth breaking some rules. Is it weird we're kind of into the war games? Thank goodness Annabeth knows…everything. The labyrinth is a little timey-wimey. Grover, as always, has genius comedic timing. Everything has been building to Percabeth, and we are HERE for it. Now it's time for Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 4! Prophecy Count #16! It's more of a dream of the past than anything else, but it totally counts. We're so glad we did a Monster Guide episode on the Minotaur! It's not often Clarisse has emotions other than anger, but we love her growth. Can we make going to the Oracle a little less dangerous?? We want Quintus to be good, but he's super suspicious. Callie weighs in on Theseus, son of Poseidon. Does Clarisse have feelings about Chris Rodriguez? Prophecy Count #17! It's a very important prophecy, and Annabeth is totally not fooling into believing she forgot the last lines. Annabeth breaks the rules AGAIN. But it's so nice to see Annabeth and Tyson's relationship growing stronger. Single-use items are THE WORST. Okay, BUT THE PERCABETH HUG!? Grover really, really doesn't like caves. Callie stole Kristen's favorite moment—how rude! The Percabeth hug really was the best part of this chapter, though. Feedback (01:29:47) Caoimhe writes in again and makes us feel AWESOME. We're REALLY excited to start the Kane Chronicles series. And, oh boy, she likes the longer episodes! Can you tell our voices apart yet? Check out Prophecy Radio episode #4 for our Daughter of the Deep discussion. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 35, in which we may do a Percy Jackson and the Olympians fancasting roundup OR we might do a Monster Guide on hellhounds. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz talk about what's new in the Percy Jackson fandom, discuss all the books the Rick Riordan Presents authors have written outside of the Disney imprint, and analyze chapters 13 and 14 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:07) This might be the longest doc we've had so far. First and foremost, we have news from Rick's blog! There's no current plan for a Daughter of the Deep sequel, but never say never! The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel and Serwa Boateng's Guide of Vampire Hunting have official release dates and synopses. We have an official update on where in the process the Nico di Angelo book currently is. The book is at 117,000 words. How many pages is that? We're probably not getting anymore Percy Jackson television show news until 2022. That includes no news for Disney+ Day. BUT we know Becky and Rick have reviewed some casting callback tapes. Read Riordan has spotlights on Nelinha, Ester, and Gemini. The Last Fallen Star is officially in New Zealand! You can sing to the karaoke version of The Lightning Thief Musical! (Edit: Apparently this is from 2019, and we had no idea!) “Forget Horse Girls, Embrace the Mythology Freak” by Jenny G. Zhang (here's the tweet) Sorry, Frank. Why did we like mythology so much, and what do all the mythology freaks have in common? (Say hi to Callie!) Rick Riordan Presents authors' other series (00:18:47) We're really excited about all the books, novellas, anthologies, and short stories these authors have written. But fair warning: There are A LOT. Anthologies have really made a resurgence lately, and we're into it. Up first is Roshani Chokshi, who wrote the Pandava Quintet/Aru Shah books! She's got some other stories here about Hindu mythology that might be for older audiences. And one of her books definitely gives Six of Crows vibes, if you're into that! Next up is J.C. Cervantes! Look, sometimes words are hard. Karen just wants to keep Kristen on her toes. Yoon Ha Lee, who wrote Dragon Pearl, is a very prolific writer. There's a lot of sci-fi here, and some really cool concepts. Kristen gets her mind blown, repeatedly. Festus, is that you? Thank the gods for Wikipedia. Next on our happy hit parade is Carlos Hernandez, who wrote Sal & Gabi. Karen learned a fun fact about him, and she is very excited. Short stories can get W E I R D. Kwame Mbalia wrote the Tristan Strong series, as well as some other cool books. Black Boy Joy seems like a really important book to have right now. You might as well just assume almost everyone has written short stories. Tehlor Kay Mejia wrote the Paola Santiago series, and she's up next. She's got some great titles. If you liked Dumplin', then you might like Miss Meteor. Forests are so cool and creepy. Karen gets a book idea in the middle of recording. Graci Kim wrote the Gifted Clan series, and Karen has a quick aside about the last book in the series. She hasn't written any other books, but we have some fun facts to share about her! Who knew running away to the circus was so common? Rebecca Roanhorse wrote Race to the Sun, and a lot more!. You should watch Love and Monsters. And then go read Roar by Cora Carmack. We love a good title. And a good name. How do we feel about historical fiction? Here's LeVar Burton reading “Wherein Abigail…,” “Takeback Tango,” and “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™.” Sarwat Chadda wrote City of the Plague God, as well as some other interesting books! Have you seen A Little Princess? Shoutout to Animorphs! More short stories! More anthologies! Next up is Lori M. Lee, who wrote Pahua and the Soul Stealer. She's a busy lady, but she does plan to finish her Gates of Thread and Stone series. See? Forests are creepy! Yeah, you should definitely read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. Roseanne A. Brown wrote Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting, which we are very excited about. She also just finished up her duology in her A Song of Wraiths and Ruin series. They have some incredibly stunning covers. It's so cool that so many of these authors have written for Marvel and Star Wars, too. Daniel José Older wrote Ballad & Dagger, which definitely has some shared threads with one of his other series. If you're looking for an adult series, look no further than Bone Street Rumba! Daniel has written *all* kinds of books. Well-behaved spirits are super lame. Who else loves Waterworld?? Stacey Lee will be writing Winston Chu Versus the Whimsies, and Karen's definitely heard of her books before. Bridgerton might be a little spicy for our younger listeners. Historical fiction about non-white stories are always interesting reads. Everyone is running away to the circus! Karen brings the whole podcast down. Lastly, we've got Tracey Baptiste, who will be writing Moko Magic. Lots of jumbies here! Let's throw in some Minecraft, shall we? More jumbies! Plus, some non-fiction! We did it! We made it! We hope you found your next read. If you've read any of these, let us know which ones we should start with! Chapter Reviews (01:19:21) Let's talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 13 and 14. Grover sleeps a lot. Thank the gods for Annabeth. That chimera? No, thank you. Ohio reference! Karen breaks Kristen. It's always interesting when the female goddesses give birth to the demigods. Annabeth's childhood sounds rough, and it's so sad. But we can't wait to see her relationship with her father improve. Percy doesn't want to be enemies! What, exactly, is Poseidon's domain? Prophecy Count: 4 Percy can see through the Mist a lot better now. The dark is very scary. Percy really needed to take this moment to reflect on everything that's happening to him. Who was the woman in the water? How did that lady see through the Mist? But, seriously, how exactly does the Mist work? How has Percy never noticed he can breathe underwater? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 8, which will discuss some Daughter of the Deep spoilers. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz do a take two on this episode, updating you on the latest news (including that big Nico di Angelo reveal), discuss Rick Riordan Presents and all the amazing series and authors that go along with it, and analyze chapters five and six of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates Karen sort of maybe kind of possibly lost the first version of this episode. The Tristan Strong Keeps Punching paperback is available now! BE WARNED: Due to COVID-related printing delays, you'll want to order your books for the holidays ASAP. Daughter of the Deep‘s U.S. release date is Oct. 26. Please don't share any spoilers! Subjectify will have a spoiler-free review up on that date. Have you met King Cotton yet? All the Cursed Carnival authors are now all NYT bestsellers! We attended the Daughter of the Deep virtual event. Have YOU read Mysterious Island? Robert Ballard is SO. COOL. And definitely a son of Poseidon Octopuses are a little creepy. Cool. But creepy. Daughter of the Deep has been optioned for a Disney+ feature film! *Insert firework sounds* We'll probably get more background information from the Percy Jackson show than we got from the books. We're gonna keep talking about Teen Wolf. Sorry not sorry. We're still trying to be patient about casting. The Percy Jackson world lends itself to animation, and we stand by that. But The Kane Chronicles is definitely a live-action film. Yes, we heard about the Nico di Angelo news. We know a little bit about the process behind this co-writing venture. Mark Oshiro seems super cool. The year 2023 is going to be JAM-PACKED. Rick is working on something related to Irish mythology, but we don't have much information yet. Rick Riordan Presents Did you notice Karen got a new mic!? Rick Riordan Presents is a beast of an imprint, and we love it so much. #NotAPhase Let's jump into the books from this imprint that Karen HAS read. The Pandava Quintet by Roshani Chokshi is definitely a favorite. Have you listened to Prophecy Radio episode 2, where we talk about Cursed Carnival? Paola Santiago gets to explore such a spooky and cool world. Beware cliffhangers! Graci Kim is cool and she loves food and Karen loves food and you should read The Last Fallen Star. Witches! Magic! Baked goods! Dragon Pearl is getting a sequel! Karen got an ARC of Tiger Honor and did a little dance. Kristen explains what the heck an ARC is. We have a soft spot for fox spirits. Karen has read The Storm Runner and totally meant to keep reading the series, but life got in the way. This series is also getting a spinoff duology! Zane's destiny is kind of a buzzkill. It pains Karen every. single. day. that she hasn't finished the Sal and Gabi series. Sometimes staying up to date on all these books is hard. P.S. Let us know how you want us to handle talking about the individual series in the future! Tristan Strong by Kwame Mbalia has super powerful titles and awesome covers! Long live Gum Baby! Rebecca Roanhorse's standalone Race to the Sun might be a good one to start with. It discusses some really topical issues and would be important for kids to read. We're obsessed with the title of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. Sarwat Chadda seems like a hilarious guy. Which one will Kristen read first!? The premise for Pahua and the Soul Stealer sounds so cool. Kristen has heard of the Hmong people before thanks to the Olympics! Foreshadowing: We mention our cat. Please make Karen's dreams come true. Let's talk about the RRP books that aren't out yet! In Serwa Boatang's Guide to Vampire Hunting, pronunciation of Serwa's name is literally a plot point. Not the fireflies! It's giving us very much Teen Wolf vibes. Very much Buffy. Daniel Jose Older sounds like he's lived such an interesting life. Finally a young adult novel!! *whispers diabolically* Enemies to lovers! We just want magic to be real. The Whimsies sounds so fun and mischievous. So many of these books are set in NYC. Don't forget the Moko Magic! Chapter Reviews This week we're discussing chapters 5 and 6 of The Lightning Thief. Karen was not expecting to have so many feelings about Mr. D. The nectar sounds amazing and terrible at the same time. Chapter 5 blows this whole world wide open. More Annabeth, please! Percy is so dramatic sometimes. Kristen is getting Big Brother vibes from chapter 6. Finally, Camp Half-Blood in the flesh. Who DOESN'T like to show off in the bathroom once in a while? Chiron is giving us Dumbledore vibes, and we don't love it. Did Chiron know Percy was Poseidon's son? We now know Grover's official age! Percy has so much left to learn. A surprise visitor drops by! Technically, Chiron didn't lie about the attic. Karen loves the explanation of monster archetypes. We got our first listener feedback! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 4, which will include a spoiler-free review of Daughter of the Deep in more detail. Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz come together to update you on the latest Rick Riordan news (including some new Daughter of the Deep information), discuss the Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities anthology, talk about the Rick Riordan Presents imprint and all its authors, and analyze chapters three and four of The Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates There's SO MUCH news! The U.S. Daughter of the Deep release date has changed. This means Prophecy Radio episode 3 will cover Rick Riordan Presents instead of our DotD review! Please, no spoilers. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda is getting a sequel! Tower of Nero is now in paperback! Daughter of the Deep and Cursed Carnival are number one on Amazon! Be sure to check out the profile on Thandiwe from Tristan Strong. Carlos Hernandez did an awesome interview with Nerd Daily. Ashlee Latimer has been doing Rick's social media for a whole year! Karen watched the Cursed Carnival live video and has some fun facts from the event! Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Who wrote Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities? Some of these stories are a bit hefty! Read Karen's full Cursed Carnival review. Welcome to the Multiverse Mansion! Do the Rick Riordan Presents books exist in the Percy Jackson universe? Karen is still gunning for a crossover series from Rick. Kristen has no prior knowledge of any of the RRP stories. Mythology overload! What's up with this whole Gum Baby thing? Kristen had a little bit of an easier time with Rebecca Roanhorse's story. Sawat's story was full of sarcasm and dry wit. What's not to love? J.C. Cervantes' story really hits you with the mythology super fast! Now it's Karen's turn! She's read the books from the authors of the stories covered here. Read “Calamity Juice” first! Suffice it to say there are some Doctor Strange implications here. Not to play favorites, but Aru Shah is really awesome. Yoon Ha Lee's story was exciting because we're gonna get another book in this series. We find out why Kristen has trust issues. “The Initiation” has a lot of positive, subtle, natural representation. How could you not love Bruto!? Graci Kim, please give us enchanted baked goods. Last but not least, let's talk about Rick Riodan's new story. Will “My Life as a Child Outlaw” be related to anything else? Is this kid-friendly? Do we like the main character? There's a spinoff here that we'd love to read. Learning how to pronounce all the words was really fun! Chapter Reviews It's time to talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 3 and 4. We are now a Grover appreciation podcast. We've had a fascination with names and the power they hold, along with the ways people choose to honor their culture/heritage. This episode's guest, Graci Kim, has committed her current creative endeavors to exploring the myths and folktales originating from Korea! Her book, The Last Fallen Star, is about a Korean American girl who discovers her heritage and her magic on a perilous journey to save her witch clan family. As if in parallel, Graci shares how she's navigated her own labels/identities as a hyphenated Asian, at one point going by the pen name Graci Goldheart and continuing to experiment with her pen names. Amidst these confusing explorations of names and identities, she opens up about how magic and childlike wonder are pillars in her life that she is committed to infusing in her works, career, and family as she is raising her 1 year old daughter. If you love conversations about names, fantasy, books, parenting, you don't want to miss this episode!Read The Last Fallen Star!https://bookshop.org/books/the-last-fallen-star/9781368059633More about Graci:Graci Kim is a bestselling author of magic-infused middle grade books, who was vine-picked in Korea and sun-ripened in New Zealand… Her Korean mythology-inspired debut, The Last Fallen Star, published by Rick Riordan Presents, became an instant US bestseller. In her middle grade debut novel, THE LAST FALLEN STAR, Graci Kim takes us into a world of Korean mythology when we meet the Gom clan, a powerful lineage of Korean healing witches. Riley Oh can't wait to see her sister, Hattie, get initiated into the clan and finally be able to cast spells without adult supervision. Although Riley is desperate to follow in her sister's footsteps when she herself turns thirteen, she's a saram--a person without magic. Riley was adopted, and despite having memorized every healing spell she's ever heard, she often feels like the odd one out in her family and the gifted community. The sisters hatch a plan to help Riley which ends up with Hattie's life hanging in the balance. Riley must find the last star in order to save her sister. As Riley embarks on her search, she finds herself meeting fantastic creatures and collaborating with her worst enemies. And when she uncovers secrets that challenge everything she has been taught to believe, Riley must decide what it means to be a witch, what it means to be family, and what it really means to belong.

Graci Kim's post on Twitter sums it all up. "Last but not least - to all the diaspora kids, adoptees, misfits. To anyone who’s ever felt invisible, or like they didn’t belong. I SEE YOU Real magic lives inside all of us - in the choices we make every single day. This book is for you!" Best selling author Rick Riordan has given Graci Kim a stamp of approval for her book The Last Fallen Star. Graci was a sweet little Korean girl who never saw characters in books that looked like her when she was growing up. Her life was filled with lots of different experiences but she grew up believing that kids like her couldn’t be the heroes of our stories. Today her Korean witches book comes out & she will tell you she was wrong. Your voices matter. Your stories matter. YOU matter. And sometimes, your wildest dreams can come true.
