Episode 42: Is Jesus God?

Data Over Dogma

Hooooo boy. This week, we're asking one of the biggest questions in Christianity. Is Jesus God? Specifically, we'll be looking at two questions. First, we examine the gospel most frequently cited to support the idea: the gospel of John. Literally, the first verse of John says "The Word was with God, and the Word was God", doesn't that kind of end the debate? Well, if you know this show, you KNOW it's going to be more complicated than that! We'll go verse by verse discussing why what you've always been told may not be the full story. It may not be the story at all! And since we're courting controversy already, why not go whole-hog? In our second segment, we're going after the Trinity. Where did the concept of a triune God come from? Is it in the Bible? If not, is it at least the best solution to the problem it was trying to solve? How did the idea become canon? Are we finally going to talk about something that actually happened at the Council of Nicaea? I am your host, Melissa Oliveri.  Today we'll be reading a story called “When The Night Came”. This story was originally released as part of my children's podcast, A Carefully Built Pretend. We're going to explore the fear of the unknown, and how gaining perspective can make the unknown less frightening. Now, it's time to settle in… grab a blanket, and a warm drink…  and listen to my story about the night creatures.“Mama, could you tell me a story?” Asks the boy“Why, of course!” replies Mama, “Which story would you like to hear?”“Tell me the story about when the night came,” says the boy. Mama smiles. “Okay,” she says. She settles into the rocking chair and places a blanket on her lap. The boy fluffs his pillow and pulls his quilt up to his chin in preparation, then waits quietly for his mother to begin.“When I was very young, I lived in the big city. At night, the world outside was lit up by streetlights, traffic lights, headlights, neon signs... it was almost as bright as day. Then the time came, when I was just about your age, for us to leave our apartment in the city and move to a house in the country. The day we arrived I was very excited; the house was surrounded by fields of tall grass, and there were woods nearby, and     a small pond, an old barn behind the house, a shed... so many new things to check out! I spent the whole day exploring, and I had so much fun, until the night came...When the sun finally went down, the world outside was the darkest dark I'd ever seen. I looked out my bedroom window, and I couldn't see anything at all! I opened to window to squint out at the night, and at first I thought the world outside was very quiet, but when I listened more closely I heard the strangest, scariest sounds! In the city the sounds were loud, and I always knew what they were – cars honking, sirens, construction trucks... here in the country, I didn't recognize any of these eerie sounds.Every night I would sleep with a light on and close my curtains, afraid of what was lurking outside. But one night, our dog, Maggie, slipped out the door and disappeared into the darkness. I ran right out behind her without even thinking about it. Maggie was my best friend, you see. I ran and ran straight into the darkness, calling Maggie's name. Finally, I stopped, and my heart started pounding. Mama and Papa were upstairs watching TV, they didn't know I was outside. I was alone. Alone with the dark. Alone with the night. I stood very, very still then, frozen in fear, when suddenly I saw it. Just beyond my reach, a small greenish yellow light blinking on and off, then another, and another... suddenly they were everywhere, staying low to the ground. I'd never seen anything like it, it was magic! Fireflies! I watched them for a while, and realized they were dancing, and their music was the sound of crickets and frogs singing a night song. They had their own special language, and I wondered what stories they were telling each other. I felt like singing and dancing along with them... I could feel the cool wet grass under my bare feet as I began moving in circles, twirling my arms in the air. I heard a new sound then, an echoing Hoooo Hoooo... it was the most beautiful sound in the world, as soft as a feather!A breeze picked up, and I heard the tree leaves make a noise like the ocean... whoooooooosh, swish.... the wind blew away the clouds and I felt a spotlight shine down on me. This was my time to shine, my moment on stage! “Hooooo! Hoooo!” I sang in my night voice, waving my arms around like a night bird, dancing in circles like a firefly, keeping the beat with the music of the crickets and frogs as the moon cast its silver light on the top of my head. The world looked so different under that gentle, shimmering light that coated everything like a soft blanket. The dew on the leaves glistened like diamonds, the shadows danced as the trees swayed back and forth in the breeze.I was startled out of the celebration by the sound of jingling dog tags. Maggie! I had all but forgotten about her! “Hello old friend, were you enjoying the night circus as well?” I asked, ruffling the fur on the top of her head. In the moonlight I could see her smiling, and I realized then that she knew all along... She knew how beautiful the world got, when the night came. From that moment forward I was no longer afraid of the dark. The night creatures became my friends, the dark swaying trees my protectors, the hooting owl my duet partner and the crickets and frogs my backup band. The fireflies my ballet chorus, the dew on the leaves my precious jewels... and after that, there was never a better time of day, than when the night came.”Mama leans back in the rocking chair. Her eyes are closed, and she has a soft smile on her face.“Mama?” asks the boy.“Yes, my love,” says Mama, her eyes still closed.“Could you take me with you to the night circus sometime?” he asks.Mama opens her eyes and ruffles the hair on top of the boy's head, “I would love to” she answers. She stands up and drapes the blanket on the back of the rocking chair, then walks to the window and stands very still for a few minutes, looking out. Finally, she waves to the darkness on the other side before closing the curtains.“Sweet dreams, my darling,” she whispers to the boy before turning off the lights. She smiles as darkness takes over the room and whispers one last time “Good night”.Thank you so much for listening. The Skylark Bell and A Carefully Built Pretend podcasts are brought to you by Phaeton Starling Publishing and feature original music by Cannelle. These days, he's gotten into a mix of writing more original music and producing other artists. Sensational 3-D Podcast! Hooooo boy, welcome back to the podcast. This week, as part of Fanbruary, we're talking about Killing Zone, a PS1 fighting game starring some conspicuously public domain monsters. You might ask, is this game good? That's a really fair question. No, it's not great, for sure, but what it does provide is nostalgia (and at least one pretty cool idea, but I'll get to that later). Sure, maybe your favorite games are actually good, but I bet all of you have at least one game that gives you that warm fuzzy feeling from remembering days in your childhood playing a game you got as a gift, from a bargain bin, or that you rented. This is that kind of a game: not one we'd recommend going back to if you haven't played it, we've done that for you, but one that reminds you of the Glovers or Rascals of the world. As a bonus, the game also includes a CPU training mode called “Auto Mode” that is actually a cool idea, even if it fails in execution, so you'll get a little regular game design talk out of this episode as well. See, we've kind of got a bit of everything in this one. We're going to talk about fighting game mechanics and balance since I suppose we have to at least try, aesthetics and audio design done in a way only the PS1 era could have accomplished, and we attempt to decipher the one spoken line of dialogue and extrapolate that into a backstory for the game's announcer. Thank you for joining us this week! While we don't necessarily recommend seeking this one out, we do recommend listening because I think there is value in looking at things that don't quite meet their goals. We talk a bit about the difference between games that seem like they had aspirations, obvious cash grabs, and those that are harder to figure out, and I think it's actually a pretty useful discussion to have when talking about “bad” games. Plus if you don't listen we won't get that sweet content cash. Do you have a pet favorite weird game from a bygone era that you enjoyed as a child? Let us know down in the comments, or come talk about it over on Discord! We sourced every one of the games we're playing this month from our suggestions channel over there, so do join if you would like to be a similarly bad influence to us in the future. Next time, we're going to be checking out Square's The Bouncer, a game that has mostly been forgotten to time, so do keep an eye out for that!

She smiles as darkness takes over the room and whispers one last time “Good night”.Thank you for being here my friend, it's so nice to spend a little bit of time with you!I hope you enjoyed this story, and remember, sometimes when something is new or different, or we don't know a whole lot about it, it can seem really scary. Just take a step back, take a deeper look, learn more about it, ask questions, try to see things from a different angle, and I promise it won't seem nearly as scary as it did before.Until next time, keep imagining, dreaming, and pretending – maybe even wave to the night creatures before you go to bed – and I'll be back very soon.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/thoughts-right-now/donations

Hooooo boy! Today's episode breaks down the tipping point that finally got House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to back an impeachment inquiry: the now-disclosed whistleblower complaint that lays out exactly how Donald Trump abused our foreign policy to pressure a foreign leader to aid him in his 2020 re-election campaign. It's every bit as bad as it looks, and we walk you through exactly what it means. Don’t forget Opening Arguments LIVE in Los Angeles, CA on October 12, 2019. Here is the link!! Here's the topline: Acting DNI Maguire changed his story as to why he withheld the whistleblower complaint to a completely bogus claim of executive privilege. We'll tell you why that won't hold up. We'll also answer: What's a TELCON, and do we have reasons to believe that the "transcript" of the President's July 25 conversation with Ukranian President Zelenskyy was "Bill Barr"ed? Are we at PEAK YODEL MOUNTAIN? Did the Republicans really email their stupid talking points to Nancy Pelosi? And if so, how do we spot a hack? (Hint: he -- and they're pretty much all 'he's -- will have an "R" after his name.) What did we learn from Maguire's testimony today, and how incriminating was it? (Very.) What does the complaint say and how bad is it? And finally -- what are the FIVE ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT Andrew thinks will be brought against this President? After all that, it's time for a brand-new #T3BE, this time a dreaded real property question that Thomas feels oddly confident about his answer. Do you share his optimism? Let us know! Upcoming Appearances None! If you’d like to have either of us as a guest on your show, drop us an email at openarguments@gmail.com. Show Notes & Links Don’t forget Opening Arguments LIVE in Los Angeles, CA on October 12, 2019. Here is the link!! Remember that the operative statute requiring Maguire to have turned over the whistleblower complaint is 50 U.S.C. § 3033, and particularly subsection (k)(5). Here's the New York Times reporting that Trump mentioned Giuliani way back in his first call to Zelenskyy on April 21, 2019. Extortion is 18 U.S.C. § 355(c)(2); treason is 18 U.S.C. § 2381, and neither are a good fit here. What laws are a good fit? Well, how about (a) illegal solicitation of a campaign contribution, 52 U.S.C. § 30121; (b) bribery, 18 U.S.C. § 201 ; (c) obstruction of justice, 18 U.S.C. § 1505, and much more?? Hooooo boy! It looks like we’re coming towards the end of yet another timeline and in a manner which is arguably more full of errors in judgment than ‘The Curse of Michael Myers’ could ever hope to be.  Yet despite a grand smorgasbord of poor decisions, a horrible mistreatment of Laurie’s character and the crushing weight of the early 2000s captured in pure, undiluted form, we can’t help but have some strange sense of misguided affection for ‘Resurrection’ - possibly because we have the news of ‘Halloween Kills’ and ‘Halloween Ends’ to soothe our wounds!

A true rarity in PDP history: a show recording DURING a Rockies game! And they were winning while we recorded! And then...On this week's edition of the show, we give credit where credit is due: Ian Desmond has been solid as of late. We discuss his resurgence and how it impacts the Rockies lineup in a positive way going forward. Speaking of resurgence, Carlos Gonzalez has looked like someone turned his internal clock back five years, and it's been among the most exciting recent developments in baseball. Can the 32-year-old outfielder keep it up, and what does THAT do for the Rockies lineup? And then there was that Dodgers series. Hooooo boy, that Dodgers series. We discuss at length, what it said about the current state of the Rockies (and the Dodgers) and what it could mean going forward. Good teams learn from their most embarrassing moments. Unfortunately, the Rockies' bullpen has had a lot of those lately. With the D-backs coming to town this weekend, the Rox have an opportunity to make some progress. Doing so will require better execution than during that Dodgers series (and the game during which we recorded this!).All that and more on the 136th episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. We also say Laura Dern's name so much her ears are probably now actually on fire, and we fixed trailers for Death Wish, The Cage Fighter, Living Among Us, and 7 Guardians of the Tomb. Our sincere apologies to Armie Hammer.

Chhhttt !!!
