Is it possible to write the script for a movie that both children and adults love? Without a doubt, Shrek is the irrefutable proof that with a great story anything is possible. Roger S. H. Schulman is an American television and film writer and producer. He co-wrote the animated feature Shrek, for which he won a British Academy Award (BAFTA) and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. He earned a master's degree in journalism from the Columbia University School of Journalism and was a journalist for several years until he began writing for television. Among other projects, he wrote the animated feature Balto for executive producer Steven Spielberg, Mulan II, and The Jungle Book II for Disney. When he's not writing, Roger teaches television and feature film writing at schools like the University of Southern California, The New School in New York City, and on his website: TheWriterCoach.com.Here is what you'll learn:Roger explains how he started his writing career after Steve Martin offered him a job as a comedy writer, when he was only a journalist. The two ways Roger's writing evolved: It has become better and more personal. The importance of writing is expressing your inner voice, but considering what audience you are trying to communicate with.Roger says that writing for children is extremely difficult, because children don't have a filter and if they don't like something they won't see it anymore. His writing process was more aware and structural, and as time went by, he learned that most of his best ideas came when he was not thinking about them. How Roger feels about Shrek meme culture. The experience of writing a show like Alf, where not much was expected and was incredibly successful.Roger believes that the great gift of writing is that you can always do it because you don't need anything, except maybe a pencil and a napkin. To learn more about Roger visit his website.Interested in knowing more about the show? Today we welcome the delightful Roger Higgins to the show. Roger is a Nashville-based designer that has been creating classic and timeless spaces for his clients for over 25 years. His work has been featured in Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, Style Blueprint, Nashville Lifestyles, and more. Roger takes pride in creating spaces that can not only be admired but lived in. We talk about his love of patterns, dining rooms, breaking the rules, and more. And why he doesn’t sweat the small stuff! What You’ll Hear on This Episode: Trials & Triumphs about Caroline’s basement project, another baby joining the HTD family (which also means a nursery!), and all about Karen’s trip to Scott’s Antique Market. How Roger is able to pull off a loose and casual style. Roger loves a neutral couch with patterns and texture. Our strong feelings on throw pillows. Why Robert loves his books—especially Elements of Style. Is painting the walls, trim, molding, etc., all the same color classic or trend? How to work with couples who have different styles. Robert’s tips for picking fabrics. Why does Robert love a dining room so much? Shedding light on a go-to way to quickly update the look of a room. Why Robert doesn’t sweat the small stuff. When is it better to recover or reupholster a piece vs. replace it? Decorating Dilemma  Hi Jenn, I personally think the chair can work just as it is. I will always go to draperies because I think they finish the room. The big-ticket items are probably the rug and the upholstery and because they are neutral and soft enough, I would be more inclined to pull a color from the rug and use it in the drapery panel; you only need one long rod along the wall for the panels and place the panels in between the glass sections. They don’t necessarily have to function—more for the aesthetic! The blue color from the rug is really nice. Also, I would change up the warmer-toned pillows like the burgundy and blush. Or find a bridge fabric that has those colors as well as the colors of the rug in it. It’s a very inviting aesthetic you have! So maybe they find something with all of these colors that has a fun pattern. There might be a bit of a sticker shock on the drapery, but it will be SO worth it. In the kitchen, I would maybe put some faux Roman or valance in the window over the sink. On the wall opposite the sink with the mirror, that would be a great place to maybe install panel molding and paint inside of that the color of your drapery. You could even upholster in there with the drapery fabric. It’ll be a very impactful statement and will tie everything in. I would love to see some kind of large lantern for a lighting fixture or just something heavy over the island. Even one with a shade the color of the drapery like the Margot could be perfect here! For the bar, if you’re open to painting, I love that pale grey-blue accent color from the rug like I talked about. You could do the cabinets on the bar that color. So, it would be the same color as the drapery and the panel wall in the kitchen. A lamp would also be pretty in there, too. We would take all of the small things out and slowly add them back until you get to the look you want. Caroline likes the idea of tiny art on the wall…almost like wallpaper out of art. Robert and Karen are open to that, but not as sold! Robert is more apt to paint the back wall the same color as the cabinets, stopping the paint on the inside corners just at the top of the window molding. Not on either of the sidewalls; just the back wall. We know we’ve given you a ton of different ideas here, so we can’t wait to see what you do. But we already love this room. The big stuff is mostly done here; you just need a few tweaks. So great job, Jenn! Mentioned in This Episode: R Higgins Interiors R Higgins Interiors on Instagram Elements of Style by Erin Gates

On today’s show James chats to Roger Woodall, Founder of Bournemouth 7s, the world's leading sports and music festival . Roger grew up in pubs in London and became very streetwise to the world of business very fast, having watched dealings of all descriptions going on! His Mum’s simple but powerful business lesson of ‘think about £1 a man’ led to him earning £20 in 45 mins by selling VIP tickets to the club next door to the family’s pub at the age of 10. 20 quid in 45 mins was good money in the 80’s, especially for a kid of 10! As well as an acumen for business Roger was a successful university rugby player and went semi-pro after graduation playing in the academy for some of the UK’s best clubs.  Aside from sports, he was also throwing parties in the local nightclubs in his final year, with about 2,000 students attending every week, which led to him realising that he’d created a replicable business model that he could roll-out to university towns and cities around the UK. After a decade of putting on a dozen events a week up and down the the country Roger decided he wanted to scale in a new way, so created a sport and music festival, Bournemouth 7s, which now  attracts over 30,000 festival goers and 400 sports teams each year from all over the world, making it the planet’s biggest sport and music festival.  In this episode you will hear:  * Roger’s unique start in ‘business’ at the age of 10 * The power of being you  * How to mix your passion and create opportunity * How Roger scaled his University events business nationally * What challenges the recent Pandemic has created for the events sector * Roger’s future plans for the amazing festival brand he has created  Connect with Dodge https://www.linkedin.com/in/eventfulentrepreneur/ ——————————————— Connect with James https://www.instagram.com/jamesburttofficial/ If you’re an entrepreneur or business owner that is interested in blowing up your brand using the power of audio, check  out the ULTIMATE PODCAST GROUP, the team that make this very podcast http://bit.ly/ultimatepodcastgroup

Roger Barton has edited and worked on some of the most iconic films of a generation such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Titanic, World War Z, Terminator: Genesis, and the last five ‘Transformers’ films (this is just the ‘short’ list). He has lived many long days in the cutting room with directors such as James Cameron, Michael Bay, George Lucas, Joe Carnahan, and more. And that’s what this episode is all about today: “Living” in the cutting room and what that can do to your mental health, your physical health, your relationships, and your well-being. Roger is no stranger to burnout on the job, and in this interview he was extremely candid, open, and honest about how his exploding career as a young up-and-coming feature editor cost him dearly in his personal life as well as with his health. If you’re curious about what it’s really like working with the biggest directors on the biggest film imaginable, Roger gives you a peek inside his cutting room. Because of Roger’s love for both his craft but also his family, he spent years wondering if there was a better way to collaborate with directors & producers whereby he wouldn’t have to disappear for months at a time and sacrifice time with his family. And luckily for every editor around the world who has desperately wished and prayed for a technical solution that would allow you to work from home while not inhibiting the collaborative process, Roger has not only found the solution…he’s helping to build it and make it better. And that solution is Evercast. If you’re struggling with creative burnout right now or find yourself sacrificing time away from family when you know deep down it doesn’t have to be this way, I invite you to download my Ultimate Guide to Optimizing Your Creativity (and Avoiding Burnout) which offers over 50 pages of my best tips, tricks, and strategies to consistently stay focused and energized throughout your long workdays trapped in a dark room. Guest Bio: Facebook|LinkedIn Roger Barton began working in editorial on documentaries and made-for-TV movies including the Emmy award-winning “Indictment: The McMartin Trial.” He soon made the transition to motion pictures and in 1997 was an Associate Editor on the decade’s biggest blockbuster, “Titanic.” He quickly moved up the ladder, honing his skills at Jerry Bruckheimer Films on “Armageddon” and “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Since then, Barton has worked with Michael Bay on “Pearl Harbor,” “Bad Boys 2,” the Platinum Dunes release, “Amityville Horror,” “The Island,” and the last five “Transformers” films. During his career, Roger has cut for Hollywood’s leading filmmakers such as George Lucas on “Star Wars: Episode III”, the Wachowski Brothers’ “Speed Racer”, Jim Sheridan’s “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and two films for Director Joe Carnahan, “The Grey” and “The A-Team.” Beginning in 2013, Roger edited three films for Skydance Entertainment, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” “World War Z,” and “Terminator: Genesis.” In 2016 Roger returned to with Jerry Bruckheimer on “Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales,” after which he joined the team cutting “Transformers, The Last Knight” which is his ninth collaboration with Michael Bay. In the summer of 2017, Roger began editing “Godzilla: King of Monsters” for Legendary Pictures but left when he became Co-Founder of Evercast — a live streaming creative collaboration platform. As more and more productions shoot out of town, Evercast is becoming widely adopted by Hollywood because keeping filmmakers connected maintains creative momentum, saves time, money and removes the need to travel post-production crews around the world for months at a time. While Roger was pitching Evercast to the Hollywood Studios, he also helped John Krasinski turn his 17 million dollar genre thriller “A Quiet Place” into a 334 million summer blockbuster. With Evercast gaining momentum of its own, Roger has returned to his passion of editing and is currently cutting “Six-Underground”, the most expensive Netflix project to date being directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds. As Sensors Expo and Conference 2019 happens this week, Roger Grace will be discussing ways to create the future. That's because, on Thursday, June 27th, he will once again be moderating the "Future of Engineering Education" panel, at noon in San Jose's McEnery Convention Center. Roger is the founder and President of MEMS marketing consulting firm Roger Grace Associates in Naples, Florida.  He is also an electrical engineer with 40 years' experience in analog circuit design engineering and mechanical engineering. And along the way, he discovered how much he enjoyed working with people and sharing ideas. Roger Grace with his 2018 "Future of Engineering Education" panel at Sensors Expo and Conference. That discovery led him to start his marketing firm, and use his expertise to help companies commercialize their products.   (He also team-taught entrepreneurship to UC Berkeley engineering students for a number of years.) The six-person panel which Roger will moderate will focus on nontraditional approaches to teaching engineering.   Two engineering students, two administrator/educators and two engineer/entrepreneurs will offer their perspectives. Entrepreneurship, adult education and co-op experiences will all be key elements in the discussion.  And so will questions from the audience. And Roger's insights on marketing could easily be pertinent to makers and arts people in general, as well as to engineering students and educators! On this edition of Over Coffee® , you will hear: How Roger first became interested in engineering; What his own academic journey was like; How he transformed himself into a marketing/business consultant with an engineering background; Who will be participating on the "Future of Engineering Education" panel; The approaches his panel will take, to discussing the theme of nontraditional education; Why Roger is an ardent fan of co-op education; What makes an engineer a good engineer; How Roger saw entrepreneurship become part of the "mix" of engineering education; The "science" of entrepreneurship, and how Roger applied it to his own students while teaching at UC Berkeley; Something students today are missing, which entrepreneurship classes can address; Some of the takeaways for "arts people" from Roger's expertise in engineering and marketing. Don't miss the "Future of Engineering Education" panel, if you're attending Sensors Expo and Conference in San Jose!  Roger and his six 2019 panelists will be discussing nontraditional engineering education (and asking for your questions) from noon to 1 pm on Thursday, June 27th in the Sensors Live Theater area. Roger is a legend in the pinball industry, being one of the most successful pinball players in all history, and also a licensing agent and industry Rep. who has been very instrumental in shaping the industry. On this episode of Inspired Insider, Jeremy talks with Roger about how he got into Penn ball in the first place, what it was about the game that drew his interest and kept him so absorbed in it, and how he carved out his place in the industry during the time when confusion about the nature of the very game he played was part and parcel of the era he lived in. Roger has many observations to share from his time as a competitive pinball player and also from his experience in leading the charge for fairer laws regarding pinball machines and their use, and the licensing and distribution pinball machines as he worked for big manufacturers of the games. His lessons go beyond business, into all areas of life, thinking, and action. On this episode Roger will share his lowest point in life, the death of his father, and also his highest points both in life and in his career. It's obvious from listening to Roger that he still has passion for the game that brought him notoriety and opportunity. Roger L. Martin has spent his career attacking models that don’t produce the desired results. I first became aware of Roger L. Martin’s work when I was the Global Head of Learning & Development for Diversey, Inc. My CEO at the time, a former Proctor & Gamble executive, taught me Roger’s cascading choices framework as a method for setting and maintaining strategy. He had first learned it from A.G. Lafley, the CEO of P&G. Later, Roger Martin partnered with A.G. Lafley to write Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works. It is one of the books that I have most often recommended to others. With his deep expertise on strategic thinking, Roger has served on several boards, both for profit and non-profit. It was in his capacity as a board member for the Skoll Foundation that he began to think about the work of social entrepreneurs. Roger helped the Skoll Foundation to clearly define their audience and their mission. This led to the seminal article “Social Entrepreneurship: A Case for a Definition,” co-written with Sally Osberg, the CEO at Skoll. Eventually Sally and Roger expanded on these concepts and co-wrote Getting Beyond Better: How Social Entrepreneurship Works. In this episode of the Social Entrepreneur podcast, we discuss: How Roger came to be on the board of the Skoll Foundation. Good morning folks! Within the Trenches is back for episode 26! I had the pleasure of sitting down and speaking with Roger of Cullman County 9-1-1 out of Alabama and Craig who is retired out of Guilford Metro 9-1-1 in North Carolina. This episode is a must listen as both Roger and Craig go through their history with 9-1-1 and how it pulled them in. Craig had emergency services in his blood, so to speak, since his father and uncle’s helped form several volunteer fire departments. Roger on the other hand was first part of the defense industry. Once he retired from there he moved into emergency services and became a 9-1-1 director after long admiring the profession. This episode is a must listen. The history and look back at how 9-1-1 was before more recent technology is very interesting. As always you can email the show at thejcast@thejabberlog.com for comments, concerns suggestions or if you would like to be on the show.
