Mike Schibel was born and raised in Pacific Palisades, California, and was exposed to stunning travel destinations from my crib!  When he was five, his Grandparents gushed about a recent trip to Egypt and after seeing those Pyramids, he knew I had to travel!   As a Junior at the University of Arizona, Mike was ready for something new.  He spent a semester abroad in London, exploring Europe, Scandinavia, and North Africa. Mike stepped way outside my comfort zone and tried new things.   All roads led back to LA and the Entertainment industry post-college. For a decade, he rose the ranks as an agent and talent manager.  Which of course led to the search for a deeper meaning in my life. In 2010 Schibel bought a one-way ticket to Australia.  Without a plan, he spent a year on the road, meeting interesting people, seeing incredible places, and having memorable inspiring conversations.  Mike's passion for traveling, storytelling, and community building led me to launch, “Travel With Meaning” in 2017. He created “Travel Talk Live” to bring travelers together to recreate the feelings he experienced on the road, build an authentic community to inspire and encourage others to travel.   In the Spring of 2019, Mike launched the “Travel With Meaning” Podcast to continue to grow our community. Hello everyone! Well, it was a wild and crazy second week. One that left Katie dropping hardcore F-bombs, not once but twice in a matter of twenty-four hours. I'm not sure if you picked up on this, but some individuals may not be here for the right reasons. Some Guy in Austin discuss this reality, along with some other things we noticed, such as: Does the Canadian have bear claw tattoos on his chest? Or angel wings? If Mike hadn't suffered a near heart attack to win the Greatest Lover award, would the trophy have gone to Connor the Cat Man? Have Kaitlyn and Tayshia formed an entourage with the ABC Intern and the old guy who rang the bell during the mud wrestling match? Is that why they aren't there to comfort Katie when her worlds caves in on episode two? Some Guy has a theory. And it involves moonshine.  EPISODE NOTES: Here's the Bachelorette Katie recap from episode 2. Millennial Real Estate Investor

Michael Glaspie had his humble beginnings in Texas. Having been born and raised there, he naturally went to college in-state and eventually joined the military. What was a means to pay the bills became a sort of passion for him, as he rose to become a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, better known as the “Green Berets.”   However, several years into his tenure, he started to question whether there was something more out there for him. Was service all that he was meant to do?   Sure enough, Mike realized that in order to be able to do more with his life, he had to be able to financially support it. In enters real estate investing. Mike purchased his first duplex with less than $2,000 and inadvertently House Hacked without fully understanding what House Hacking even was.   Along the way, Mike experimented with many different strategies and have come to accept rental income as his main vehicle for financial freedom. By having steady, passive cash flow every single month, Mike is able to supplement his once military income and build his portfolio to scale.   Up to date, Mike is a real estate agent and looks to triple (yes, triple!) his investment portfolio within the next five years. He attributes this feat to the people he surrounds himself with, as well as his continued education because that’s what got him started in the first place.   Our takeaways from our conversation with Mike: 1) “Subject-to”: Term is used when a property is acquired “subject-to” the existing financing. The mortgage remains with the same person (seller), but the title transfers over to the new owner, you (buyer). In Mike’s case, it works well with military members who have to sell a property with no equity (because military members usually move every 2-5 years). That way, they can maintain their credit score, not pay money out of pocket to sell their home, and have a pain-free solution to their relocation. 2) AirBNB Arbitrage: “A sexy way of saying a ‘sub-lease,’ which is a sexy way of saying ‘to rent out a rental.’ ” says Mike. His reasons for implementing this strategy are speed and profitably. In other words, to be able to invest quickly with less capital compared to other popular strategies with just as much, or more, return on investment (ROI). There is enough room for creativity in this strategy that other larger investments don’t necessarily allow because of the red tape involved.  While many landlords might not like this idea, there are many benefits to them as well. Some include being able to receive steady income for longer term leases, endure less wear and tear on the unit, and have the peace of mind that the unit is being kept in tip-top shape. 3) Three lessons Mike learned on his first wholesale deal: 1. Don’t be overconfident, always keep the other party’s best interest in mind. 2. Keep out of pocket costs to a minimum. 3. Start with the end in mind. During the early stages of Mike’s real estate career, like we mentioned, he tried many different things. One of which was wholesaling. While it sounded simple enough to him at the time, with hindsight, Mike admitted that he did not make the best decisions on that first deal. As a result, the deal fell apart resulting in lost capital for Mike and housing trouble for the seller. Although he learned his lesson, if he might’ve been a little more cautious, the deal could’ve actually went well. 4) Implement fail-safes. Being involved in short-terms rentals (AirBNB), Mike ensures that he and his team are prepared in case a push were to shove. But this goes for every investment strategy out there all across the board. Whether it be on lease agreements, purchase/sale contracts, or partnerships, just to name a few, have specific terms and agreements in place so that all parties are on the same page, all parties can weather out a storm if one were to arise, and all parties are not put in an uncomfortable or unfair situation during the deal or life of the investment.   If Mike could go back and talk to his 16 year old self, he’d tell him, “Be patient and think about the results of your actions.” An unexpected benefit of real estate investing, Mike said, was the freedom it grants you. With this business, you can truly work for yourself and be self sufficient. A piece of advice Mike would tell his friends looking to get started in real estate would be to “Make the first deal… get started as fast as you can!” Mike recommends using Personal Capital to assist you in all of your financial and accounting needs. Mike recommends reading The Millionaire Real Estate Agent/Investor and The One Thing by Gary Keller, Jay Papasan, and Dave Jenks, as well as The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.   If you’d like to get in touch with Mike, visit: www.fivepillarsrealty.com or follow him on Instagram @michael.s.glaspie

“Do not accept the answer of NO from someone that is not qualified to give you the answer of YES.”We should not be quick to give mortals too much power over our lives. Have you ever asked someone for permission regarding a situation and then, wonder why you did that after you find their answer to be weak and most likely, incorrect? When people are not sure about the answer to provide you with, they should just simply say, “I am not sure but am resourceful enough to help you find out.”This quote is one that I live by! It makes me think of a great example to share with you. Our lifelong friend, Mike Padgett, and my daughter, Billie  have radio in their blood. Once the radio bug bites you, it is in your system forever! Early on, in Mike's career, there was a teacher that literally told him that he had a terrible voice. This teacher went as far as to tell him that he should forget about a career in radio altogether! Mike shared this information with Billie, and me, and carried it around with him, all of his life. Not only did Mike have an exultant voice, he ended up becoming a “radio legend” in the Tri-Cities area where we live. If Mike would have listened to that teacher, he would have not had a career in radio! He would have chosen another career path, and most likely have been miserable. It is a horrible thought that we can give in, and listen to bad opinions of other people. Will you remember not to accept the answer of “no” from someone that is not qualified to give you the answer of “yes?”1 John 5:4-5 For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Do you have a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or other general wellness device to track your activity, monitor your heart rate, lose weight, or count calories? Are these smart technologies considered medical devices, general wellness devices, or both? In this episode, Jon Speer invites guest Mike Drues of Vascular Sciences to join the show as the two discuss the pros and cons, go-to-market pathways, and other considerations for general wellness products. Some of the highlights of the show include: ● FDA does not regulate or classify general wellness devices that don’t diagnose, treat, or prevent a disease, injury, or condition. ● General wellness devices are required to do what they claim to do through prudent engineering. ● A general wellness device can still be considered a medical device, which creates confusion and false claims. ● Should manufacturers take the wellness or regulated route? Try both by putting versions of the same device on the market at the same time. ● Dumbed-down vs. stronger labeling: If the technology and risk are the same, how can FDA treat the same device differently? ● A wellness device exemption justification describes the device to explain how it meets labeling, technology, and risk requirements. ● FDA does not have a wellness device database to address problems by requiring pre-submissions, registrations, notifications, or other options. ● If Mike is “too busy” to help, that’s his code for, “You’re not doing what you should be doing.”

Mike had grown his companies to multi-million dollar businesses but was not profitable at all. He had refinanced his house multiple times and was not making ends meet.   He thought if he could run the business long enough, they’d eventually hit their ‘big break’ and become profitable. After selling his businesses, he decided to become an angel investor with this mindset and — guess what — the 10 businesses he invested in all tanked. Within two years, he lost every penny that he had ever made.   After he told his family that he had failed them, he went through two years of ‘functional’ depression. It was not a proud moment in his life. Through this journey, he was able to ask himself some hard questions and those hard questions lend to a lightbulb moment. How can I make my businesses profitable, always?   Keep in mind, it’s also a lifestyle problem for many entrepreneurs as well. As they’re trying to live a good life and create a profitable company, in the back of their mind they’re worried about whether or not they can afford their car or their home tomorrow. The amount of stress this puts on someone makes it very hard to see the bigger picture.   Mike’s accountant was trying to help him by showing him the real numbers, by showing him the metrics, and Mike would brush him off and not listen to his advice. If Mike saw he had money in the bank, then he had money in the bank! But it isn’t always so simple.   Mike knew that he had to change somehow, but changing your behavior right off the bat is a very difficult thing to do. So, what he did was he decided to put a percentage of his money into a ‘profit’ bank account and run his business on the remaining cash. By making this simple shift, he was able to see things from a bigger perspective and he was forced to reverse engineer his business so it would survive on the remaining cash no matter what.   Interview Links: Profit First Book mikemichalowicz.com: For access to Mike’s Wallstreet journal articles, book excerpts, and entrepreneurial tips.   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshop: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Connecting Security, Technology, Leadership and Sales with Guest Mike Kail Mike Kail is the CTO of Everest.org, with over 25 years working in technology companies from large to early-stage startups.  We discuss Security, SecDevOps, Sales and Software Development Alignment, Sales Rep Outreach, Compensation, Leadership, Focus, etc.  This discussion crosses a number of different critical areas that will impact your organization. Thank you Mike for joining us this week - the discussion was awesome. Questions Addressed What are some lessons Mike learned as he has become more experienced on the sales side of the equation? Why do sales reps forget empathy? If Mike's working with a vendor, what are some questions a rep can ask to reveal timeline, focus, plan? How often does Mike delegate research to other members of the team?  Where does collaboration fit? How can we build better rapport? How often does Mike see the same type of outreach communication? What is DevSecOps? Why do people worry about security teams in the organization? What Leadership traits are necessary in successful organizations? How do you create better alignment to support the building of culture? Key Takeaways Technical founders tend to focus on the how.  Alternatively, focus more on the why, the business problems that you address.  Maintain a partnership vs a hands-off relationship. It is difficult to read the context. Hope and desperation fuel sales tactics, this is never good. Layout the "Why Strategy" on a proper timeline. Spamming and hoping something sticks does not work. "Don't make your problem my problem" - Mike There is nothing magical in the end of quarter theory. Questions to consider. Is this tied to something larger? What are the side-effects? Who are the cast of characters? How will this impact the business? Ask questions, set expectations. Establish communication protocol sooner rather than later. Play poker - learn how to read tells. Transparent conversations are important, build relationships, earn trust. Be personal, do the work. If you are going to send canned messages - remember to edit. DevSecOps - helps to make security a first-class citizen. There has been a shift from control based to more contextual Sometimes security is perceived as a weapon.  In less forward-thinking orgs it may be perceived as a checkbox. Involve security early in the discussion. The security team does not need to be software engineers, but they need to understand how security impacts or should be considered in the pipeline. Software engineers should be aware of security hygiene. Culture of transparency, open communication, empathy, are all important.  You can't play the blame game. In a disagreement, take the position of the other person, start solving problems, and not worry about who is right. In many organizations, the sales data is about reporting up, and does not include context.  Design is important in security, operations, and sales. Empathy - in the DevOps world you have a post mortem, which is blameless.  Think about how this can apply to your sales organization. Post-Mortems - there is value in having them not be "anonymous" Two foundational leadership traits - Trust & Respect You are on the same team. Identify your north star, and remind people of that. Everybody is human. Early technical founder - trying to improve sales - focus on the why, the value proposition, the business impact. Call to Action/Engagement Question How are you taking an operational oriented approach to your business? Think about how you can apply the post mortem in your organization. If Mike stood in an exhibition space with a label stuck to him would he be art? Would the Neo-Platonic Augustine have approved of Tinder as a method by which women might more closely approximate to the ideal image of humanity? This and other slippery philosophical issues will be neatly avoided as Mike and Danny once again lead you down the dark alleys of philosophy and then abandon you to make your own way home.

Coaching Series: Why Clients Nod But Don't Call - Part Three

The Three Month Vacation Podcast

One of biggest problems with any sort of prospecting is the dead silence right after clients love what you've said or done. You'd think they'd call immediately, but there's not a peep out of them. Is there some flaw in the system? And how can you overcome this obvious glitch? Click here to read online: Coaching Series 3/3: Why Clients Nod But Don't Call ________________________________________ How do you Find Prospects? Red Bull has the highest market share of any energy drink in the world, with 6.302 billion cans sold in a year. However, it almost never got started. Before the launch, part owner, Dietrich Mateschitz hired a market research firm to test Red Bull's acceptance. The result was a complete let down “People didn't believe the taste, the logo, the brand name. “I'd never before experienced such a disaster.” But Mateschitz believed the product would do well if he placed it in the right market. Which is precisely what he did His insight was to target not just students, but trendy students in universities. Instead of selling the brand to them, he'd pay them to throw a party and supplied them with free cases of Red Bull. What Mateschitz was doing, was two masterful acts all at once. He was seeking out the kind of clients he'd want, and instantly demonstrating the application. For someone starting out in coaching it might seem like an uphill task to get clients No one knows you, no one knows your brand, and no one even cares. Sounds pretty much like Red Bull doesn't it? But just like Red Bull, you've got to know how to work your way around such a dismal scenario. The first stage would be for you to decide on a specific audience. Before you get close focus on a single person, namely a profile, it's important first to find an audience. Take Mike Jara's audience for instance Mike deals with the issue of stress management. And that's a pretty broad audience. On any given day, you're likely to run into people who are wound up. Even so, it's not quite the audience you (or Mike) is looking for. Instead, Mike has chosen to talks to teachers. They have a pretty stressful day, not just in the classroom, but with the prep work and the assignments after the last kid has gone home. The stress gets in the way of sleep, causing the teachers to be even more sleep deprivation. When they get back to work, after a restless sleep, they're edgier than ever before. However, without the audience in mind, the message goes quickly off track When Mike started the exercise of getting a message across, his line went like this: Start your mornings with abundant energy. Ditch the coffee and grab yourself a hot cup of habits. Not only was the line a bit confusing, but it instantly brought up objections. Most people drink coffee, because they like the taste, but also because it's a break, and often a social gathering of sorts. They don't see coffee as the enemy. If Mike were to look for prospects with a line like that, he'd be likely to get little or no response, which would be a shame, because there's nothing wrong with Mike's offering. When looking for prospects, it's not enough to have a great product or service. Instead, you have to get started with the target audience, then move to the target profile, and that's when you avoid the noise factor and get a clearer signal. When I started out as a coach/consultant I thought I had a great line I'd say something like this: “Reactivating dormant business clients”. I was so chuffed with my line that I got a designer to design my stationery, which included a thousand business cards. Months later, I found barely little or no interest in what I had to offer. However, I also got lucky because I was introduced to a networking group. This group met on every Friday, which meant I could test out which lines worked best. Even so, I got nowhere in a hurry. What changed everything for me was a live situation As part of the group exercise, I had to visit every member of the group individually. They, in turn, had to explain their product or service to me. I'd listen patiently, while some people took as much as 10-12 minutes to explain their marketing message. I'd then reassemble the concept in my brain, and put it forward to the member. “You explain it better than me,” they'd say in astonishment. Even so, I was not convinced. I was the guy who “reactivated dormant business clients.” Plus I had all these sunk costs in the stationery. I wasn't about to go all nuclear on the existing message. It took over a dozen people to point out what I did before I was cured of my stubbornness. Eventually, I started talking to people about how hard it was to get the attention of a client in a few seconds, and almost immediately those very people would stop what they were doing. They'd look up and pay attention to what I was saying because I'd hit a chord with them. I'd narrowed down my audience, and had managed to craft a message that appealed directly to that very audience. Prospecting may seem like a frustratingly tricky task You're not sure where to get your clients and they, in turn, can't find you. However, the core of prospecting is to figure out where the gold lies in the first place. Your gold is to “find the audience, any audience”. When I started as a coach, I worked with a small business owner group, but I could have easily worked with dentists. Mike Jara is targeting teachers, but dentists are fair game too. It doesn't matter who you start with, because most problems are relatively generic. However, once we get past the first stage, it's the second hurdle that's harder. You somehow need to speak to your audience and find out the most significant barriers they face. As you dig, you'll find something that they're very keen on solving and they'll even tell give you the exact terminology for their problem, and how to articulate the solution. A target profile interview helps tremendously in this regard (and if you're in 5000bc, here's a link). Once you have clarity with your message, it's time to go back to your original audience and see how the message works. Yup, it's time to test. Will they react? Will they get in touch? There are three steps to ensure the prospect takes the next step. Let's see what those three steps happen to be. Why prospects react positively, but don't get in touch You've been there before, haven't you? A client has been excited about your proposition, but then you hear nothing from them. Why do prospects go dead on you? Let's look at three big reasons: They’re hearing the idea for the first time You don’t have a clear next step They’re not sure how to apply your idea to their world One of the biggest problems is definitely “hearing the idea for the first time”. There's a reason why people that follow up do better than others. Even when we're keen to buy into a product or service, unless there's a screaming level of urgency, we move very slowly. We fully intend to solve the problem, but we tend to have other fires to put out. Having an idea in place is wonderful, but how are you going to follow up? When I worked as a cartoonist, I'd send a monthly calendar as a follow-up. Notice the term “monthly calendar”? Most people get a calendar once a year, but I wanted my clients to remember me month after month. With Psychotactics, we send out newsletters; we do podcasts, etc. And granted it's not about coaching and more about products and courses, but let's not sidestep the issue of follow up. Even if you're offering the most powerful product or service, clients take their time to respond. Without the follow-up, your message is like a ship in the night. If clients have listened closely to your message, it means they're interested, and you've got to take the next step and get their details so that you can follow up. However, do these potential clients have the next step? Having a next step is crucial If a potential client is in your space, what can she do next? There's no prescribed answer for every situation. Sometimes the client can get in touch with you, go to your website, or join some newsletter. The better option, wherever available, is for you to get their information and get in touch with them, instead. If that potential client is stressed, not getting enough sleep, etc. she may be motivated to get to you, but other priorities might be greater. Hence it's usually better to get them to give their card, or their details, with one tiny additional step. I used to make the clients write “YES” at the back of the card so that they had a clear memory of opting in. It was less for the opt-in process and more so because they remember their decision to move ahead. Online, it's a good idea to get them to take some action It's one thing to just have a report, white paper etc. but it's easier to get distracted online. You might want them to get to a specific page in the report or a particular set of pages. Yes, the report starts at Page 1 and moves ahead, but there's no rule that doesn't allow you to nudge the prospect to Page 7, where you have something powerful in place. You've gone through the trouble of finding the prospect, have even gotten the prospect's attention, but something that creates action on their part is a powerful tool. If you're an art coach, helping them draw something quickly might help If you're into assisting clients to get work, a quick template might be the answer. If you're into meditation, an active meditation technique that's different is likely to get their attention. Many of us believe that prospects will make their decision and take the next step. It isn't as true as you'd expect. Most of us need that additional nudge. We don't need to be inundated with “this is your last chance, goodbye” newsletters or follow-ups, but a cute little bump in the right direction does wonders. However, this only applies if your client can see the application of your service. We looked at follow up, next step, and it's time to see how the application matters. Let's say you position yourself as a coach in InDesign. Is that likely to get the client to call you? In many cases, you're not going to get the call, because clients aren't necessarily familiar with the term InDesign. They don't necessarily know it's a layout program. And if they do, they don't know what they're supposed to do with it. Which is where applications come into play. Let's say you show a prospect how she can create a gorgeous e-book in InDesign; now they have one type of application. Another set of prospects might open their eyes wide when they see the ability to create stationery and brochures. It's still InDesign, but there are many applications, aren't there? When we started out with The Brain Audit, it seemed like clients would figure out how to apply the book to their own businesses. However, in time we learned they weren't always sure. Which is one of the reasons why I wrote the book, “The Brain Audit Applications”. It showed how to apply the concept of The Brain Audit to marketing messages, to strap lines, websites, etc. In short, if I were a trainer for The Brain Audit (there's no coaching system, but let's say I was a coach), I would need to at least give prospects a glimpse into the possibilities. Don't confuse this advice with a one-stop shop A one-stop shop is where you try and push everything under the nose of the client all at once. That kind of business is quite counterproductive for a small business, as it positions you as an extreme generalist and not a specialist at all. However, if you were to draw the client into your business with a single concept. e.g. Mike Jara's line is: Morning has just started and do you already feel left behind? That's a feeling, an emotion, a real day to day problem that draws in the client. Jara might have a slightly bigger program or coaching system, and he needs to reveal it much later. When the clients are sure of what he's offering, he can then put forward the applications. It might seem that sleep has just one application—to get a restful sleep—but you'd be surprised. People, and in this case, teachers may not be sleeping because of a change in a relationship, death in the family, money issues and a whole raft of issues. These issues can be directly addressed or gently brought up as tiny examples, which in turn gets and keeps the attention of the client. Which in turn brings us right back to Red Bull Red Bull isn't a coaching service, of that we're all quite sure. Even so, the principles of getting a client are relatively similar. They found their audience by hiring the popular kids to throw a party. The problem they solved was one of being cool. Red Bull was and still is considered to be a cool drink by many in that audience. Nobody believed in Red Bull at the start, and it took Dietrich Mateschitz three years to get things going. Even so, as a company they've followed up consistently using sporting and cultural events, creating spaces and parties to make sure they're in the public eye at a relatively low cost. As coaches we need to put similar principles in place to get prospects, so let's go through a quick summary: Work on getting to your target audience—yes, offline and online Meet with clients and run your message past them Watch for something in the message that gets their attention Go back to your audience and state your line and message If they are interested, do they follow up? If not, it’s because you’ve got to follow up, give them a clear next step and show them various applications. Yes, these are a lot of steps, indeed And it's one of the reasons why many coaches don't do so well. The fundamental steps are remarkably similar whether you have a product, training or a service like coaching. Just having a website or just one speaking engagement isn't going to do the trick. You've got to be diligent with the steps, and even a great coaching system takes time to get off the ground. Get started with your plan and execution right away. Mike Agugliaro talks about the key secrets behind recruiting the best talent in the world for your business. Learn how to transform your business by adjusting your mindset, increasing the stakes on yourself, and being absolutely relentless. Key Lessons Learned: Learning New Things Like how an artist needs to find their way through things, some entrepreneurs are afraid of learning. Failure isn’t as big a fear as the uncertainty of learning something new. Video is huge right now, but why don’t more business owners start using it to their advantage? If Mike was too afraid to speak his message when he got started, he would never have had the opportunity to grow. Recruiting How often should you recruit? If your answer is always, what does always look like? Weak owner, weak recruiting. Do your employees trust your commitment to delivery? Rule number one is people want to work with and for strong people. Business owners are more worried about the boat they are going to buy than the solution to the problem in front of them. If you’re not a powerful leader, you can’t be a powerful recruiter. Your reputation travels fast. People are attracted to passion, power, and purpose. Your company has to look like the company that someone would want to work for. Investing in your business and investing in yourself is the best investment you can make. If you want to be the best in the world, you have to invest in your education. If you wait for your business to pay for everything, you will never be in a position to grow. Everyone has excuses around money but there is always a way, you just have to be willing to put in the work. You have to understand your avatar who you want to hire. If you are working to recruit people, you have to know who you want to attract. Take your best employee and use them as a model. Most business owners are not marketers, your ads, copy, and pictures have to talk to your avatar. If you’re going to say something, it has to be true. You have to be relentlessly diversified. You cannot just recruit on Facebook, find every site you can recruit for free on and take advantage of them. Talk to everybody, there is no substitute for being relentless. Your existing customer database is your best source for recruiting excellent talent. Everybody knows somebody. You can recruit with very little cost involved, you need more than money, you need massive focus and leverage. Up the stakes and the pain of not accomplishing your task and the reward of success and you will put in the work. If you say to yourself “there are no good guys” all the time, your brain will turn that into reality. Your beliefs shape your reality. If someone is paying to recruit, it comes off as desperate. Noah Oldham, church planter and Send City Missionary for St. Louis, and Dino Senesi, director of coaching for the Send Network, talk about the importance of coaches. Noah shares his story and how his coach played a significant role in saving his marriage and ministry. August Gate Church Sending Well: Principles and Practices of Church Planter Coaching NAMB.net/Coaching Introduction: Thank you for joining us on The Coaching Podcast. As part of the Send Network, we are passionate about equipping church planters to live out the call God has placed on their lives. Join us as we talk through healthy coaching practices and why every church planner needs one. Here's your host Dino Senesi. Dino Senesi: Welcome to the Send Network Coaching Podcast. I am the coaching director for the Send Network. My name is Dino Senesi, and looking forward today to talking to my friend Noah Oldham. Noah is the Sin City missionary in St. Louis. Hello Noah, how are you? Noah Oldham: Hello Dino, I'm doing well man. Thanks for having me on. Dino Senesi: You were telling me about what it's like in St. Louis today and it kind of made me want to go up your direction, so what's the buzz, what's going on in St. Louis, and what does it feel like to be in St. Louis today? Noah Oldham: Oh man, St. Louis is on the verge of baseball season about to start, and today, you can tell by looking outside, it's sunny, it's mid 50s, actually about to be 60s now and it's an amazing day getting ready for Cardinal baseball. The city comes alive this time of the year. Everybody comes out the winter depression, gets outside, it's a great time for mission, it's a great time to be in community. Dino Senesi: Yes, you know and my friends in the south and of course I live in South Carolina, the perception is when I go to places like St. Louis and Detroit that I'm going to the North Pole, that you're under ice nine months out of the year. They don't realize you have some very beautiful weather and very distinct seasons in St. Louis. Noah Oldham: That's right we do. We have really, really bad summers and we can often have really, really bad winters. Spring and fall is hit or miss. It sometimes feel like a second winter and a second summer, but we're thankful for the weather that we get here. Dino Senesi: Yes, so what do you love the most about your city, just living in St. Louis, what do you love the most about it? Noah Oldham: I love the fact that St. Louis is a Midwestern city. When I say that I mean it's equal parts city and Midwestern, it's not like a metropolitan hub like Atlanta or New York or Chicago or LA that's very, very metropolitan. You can be in the Arch, go to the top of the Arch, and look every direction and in every direction you can see, from the Arch, cornfields. Because we're right there tucked in the middle of the Midwest. It is a joining point St. Louis is for a diverse cultures, a very urban culture and a very rural culture right up next to each other. It brings, not only it's challenges, but it brings it's blessings as well. Dino Senesi: Kind of give me the spiritual climate. What is I guess the average person in St. Louis, what do they think about God, how do they process spiritual things? Noah Oldham: Yes, St. Louis is full of post-Christian culture. St. Louis, even the name, gives it away that it's a post-Catholic city, but it's also the home for the Missouri Synod Lutheran denomination and there are a lot of other church movements that have been a part of the St. Louis city. When I meet somebody who's from St. Louis, specifically a white person that's indigenous to St. Louis, I find out they went to school here growing up. My second question is Catholic or Lutheran? They always laugh and they're like, "How did you know?" I say, "Just because, that's the climate here." People here have a little bit of an inoculation to the Gospel. Everybody has been kind of culturally Christian or has walked away on purpose from being culturally Christian. You'll be hard pressed to find somebody not that's lost, a lot of people don't know the Lord and don't care to know the Lord, but a lot of people know religion. Dino Senesi: Yes, well you know we have a similar issue in South Carolina but it's Baptist or Methodist. It's kind of a different side of it but it's very much the same thing. People in the South kind of feel like, "Well hey, I was born in the right place and I go to the right church so I must be going to heaven." Noah Oldham: That's right. Dino Senesi: Yes, so that's a big hurdle to get over. Very good. Now you're a church planter as well. I didn't say that on purpose at the beginning. You planted August Gate Church and we want to talk about your coaching story today, there's a lot of coaches that listen to us and I want them to be encouraged by how God has used coaching in your life as a planter, but first tell your planting story. How did August Gate come into being? Noah Oldham: Yes, so I went to college just outside St. Louis from 2001 to 2005. Came here to play football. I was a brand new Christian, saved in high school, and in college I saw people my age leaving the church in a mass exodus. As we begin to ask questions my Christian friends and I, people on the football team, people in our classes, why were they walking away from the church? The main reason they said was they felt like the church was irrelevant for their stage of life. I was a brand new believer and the gospel is relevant to everything that I was going through, so I wanted them to know about Jesus. My roommates and I, we started to tell funny stories about what it'd look like one day to start a church for people like us, our age, and God birthed that idea when we were just 20 years old. Then after college I went to be a youth pastor back in my home town. That burden never left me, and so a couple years into being a youth pastor in Southeastern Illinois, God birthed a call in my heart to move to a city to plant a church to reach the unchurched demographics of 20s and 30s. My college roommate, my best friend, was the first person I called to invite, and God had been birthing that in his heart as well. After a couple years of preparation, we moved to St. Louis, both of our families plus a third guy as well. We all moved down and parachuted and planted August Gate in August of 2009 with about 15 people in our living room. By God's grace today, actually in a couple weeks we're launching our third gathering of our church, and we've been a part of planting over six churches in St. Louis since that time. Dino Senesi: Well God's doing a lot of neat things in St. Louis from my seat on the bus, and of course what God's doing through you and August Gate and through the entire Send Network there is incredible. A real unusual sense of community I think you guys have accomplished and enjoyed hearing you speak to couple of hundred church planters this past fall about community. What do you think’s important for planters to help them in the early phases? Noah Oldham: Yes, I mean early on they're going to need that brotherhood. That's what I love so much about where Send Network is at and where we're even going is we need people around us, we need coaches like we're talking about today. We need a brotherhood with other planters, we need a support system, especially those guys who come into a city, they know no one, they need to have this already put together circle of trust and circle of care and that's what Send Network is doing. Because without it, man, you know, you've seen it, I've seen it, guys shrivel up and almost die and the work doesn't flourish and God doesn't get the glory He deserves out of that situation. Dino Senesi: Very much so. Now specifically your coaching story, there was some acute challenges that you had. It sounded to me like you were under attack from the enemy in the early phases, and God used a coach very much to help you walk through and used him in some unusual ways, mutual clients of mine and becoming a friend, a very close friend of yours Mike Hubbard, but tell a little bit about your coaching story within your planting story. Noah Oldham: Yes, so part of our planting story was that the years that we went to prepare to come to plant in St. Louis, 2007 specifically, was what we used to call the year from hell. It was horrific. It started when I resigned my position as a youth pastor, the night I resigned I was life-flighted to a hospital with a heart condition, I was on bed rest for over a month on medications that did all kinds of stuff to my body, I gained a tremendous amount of weight, I had nowhere to go and ended up going to a church that I didn't know very well under some promises that didn't come through. We ended up losing our house after I lost that position. We had to move in with my in-laws. I went bald that year. I gained a tremendous amount of weight. My mom died, and we found out we couldn't have children. All in the course of about seven months. I was crushed, man, I was crushed. When we moved to St. Louis the next year to do my church planning residency, God was putting the pieces back together in our life. I was learning humility, I was learning to trust the Lord, and we went through very, very costly procedures to have a child. We were told by doctors it's the only way you'll ever get pregnant and we spent all of our life savings to have a baby. We had a baby, and a few months after having that baby and launching our church we found ourselves pregnant on our own out of nowhere, it was the biggest celebration you would have ever experienced. We just didn't take it for granted at any level because we knew this was a miracle from God. We celebrated, our church celebrated with us on and on, but then we went to our 14-week appointment and ready to see how our child was growing, things were happening. Things were different that day. The tech didn't turn the screen, didn't have the smile on her face like the time before. Long story short our baby died in the womb and it was, do you know one of the hardest things still to this point we've ever walked through in life. It made it even more difficult I think because of our history, what we had gone through. We were alone. We were planting this church and it was this weird thing of how do we tell people? How do we let people care for us? What will people even do? Most people in our core team weren't even that close to us. We're brand new relationships, we're trying to shepherd people, and on top of that my wife and I were processing things differently. We had given up everything in life to come plant this church and while this was very, very difficult I was finding ways to deal with the pain outwardly and my wife was not. For instance, the first Sunday after it happened I went and, as a part of the sermon, shared our brokenness. People said, "We're sorry and we're with you and we love you," but my wife was so broken she wasn't able to come to service that night. No one did that for her and it felt that after that night most people kind of moved on and she still needed to heal. We entered into a dark, dark season of our life and our marriage and our church planting. It all shifted, when one day in my monthly coaching with Mike Hubbard, he began to dig deeper into questions. He could tell there was more going on in life, things seemed kind of surfaced, and he kept digging. "Well what's going on in your marriage? What's going on in your home? How are things with your heart?" When he did, I opened up and I shared with him what was going on. Mike didn't just end our session after 30 minutes or an hour and give me some smart goals to walk away with for our next session. Mike told me in that moment my wife and I, we want to meet with you, we want to come alongside you in this. Mike and his wife, Heidi, invited us down to their church, they took us out, they spent some time with us and they invested in our life. I tell people, when I tell stories of Mike Hubbard, that I believe in many ways if it wasn't for Mike and Heidi Hubbard, Heather and I might not be in ministry today because of the way God used that coach. Dino Senesi: Yes, and I was going to interject at that point Noah. I think that's an encouraging word that our coaches could hear because sometimes, like in any ministry, you could be digging away, digging away in a coaching relationship and suddenly there's a divine moment where you know now I know why I'm Noah Oldham's coach. Mike had the maturity to seize that. I wrote down the one question: How are things with your heart? We focus a lot in Send Network about you're coaching the planter not the plant, you're coaching the person not the goal, there is a shepherding aspect of this to keep you grounded during those difficult times. Tell me more about Mike and Heidi, they invited you in, they felt impressed to pour more into you, what happened then? Noah Oldham: Yes, they just walked with us. They were an available ear. They didn't force anything too Much, like we need to meet all the time and do this and do this. They kept the door open, they have individual conversations with us, they had joint conversations with us. Honestly, the few times that we actually walked that with them, was what we needed, was what we needed, my wife and I, to see each other and hear each other and understand that there was a bigger thing going on around us. It propelled us, it propelled us into what is now an opportunity for Heather and I to shepherd so many other people as I lead church planting for a name in St. Louis and my wife leads the coaching for Church Planting Wives, the care for Church Planting Wives rather. Dino Senesi: Yes, and I understand the urgent need that a planter feels to get some really good and timely advice. When there's lots of community around like you have in St. Louis that's readily available and usually it's readily available, but you're describing a different kind of relationship, someone who will shepherd the soul. Give me some of your thoughts about that. Noah Oldham: Yes, I think that's one of the most important things, that's one of the things I love about Mike and I love about many of our other coaches in St. Louis is there is this urgency to know the most important thing, at the end of a career of ministry, it isn't the number of people that we had attend our services, the number of small groups we started. At the end of career in ministry, do we, do our family, do our children, do they love Jesus, and do they still believe in His mission in the local church? They believe that's primary, and so all the other things that come along with that are secondary to the health of that planter. That's why coaching is so important, it's to important here in St. Louis, it's so important for the Send Network because without a healthy planter, we'll never plant healthy churches. Dino Senesi: Excellent, and then that healthy coach is the backup, so we have to have healthy coaches too right? Noah Oldham: Amen. Yes coaches that are walking in step with the Lord, too. If Mike was just going through the motions and was just fulfilling a role to be a "coach" and he wasn't following the Spirit I don't know that the conversation would have gone that way, but because he was in tune with the Lord, growing in his relationship, God used him in such a powerful way. Dino Senesi: Well, and so much, and again enjoyed meeting Mike last fall, but so much in tune to what was really, really important at the moment. He could have totally missed that, he could have said, "I'm praying for you." He could have prayed for you but boy he really sensed, and no question from the Lord, what a critical stage you guys were and in your own words probably wouldn't have made it without having a coach like Mike. Noah Oldham: Amen. Dino Senesi: Just in closing, because we have a lot of coaches listening, I asked you to kind of think about so you're speaking to a coach out there, you're using Mike's example, which is very encouraging inspiration to all of us, so what word of encouragement or two would you give to a coach? Noah Oldham: Yes, my main word that I think of when I think of coach is pursuit. As you are pursuing that planter, planters they're going to be flakey, they're going to miss meetings, they're going to have scheduling mishaps, they're going to make you feel maybe sometimes like coaching isn't the most important thing on their daily schedule. Whether they know it or not, it's one of the most important things that they can be doing, and so that coach being tenacious to pursue that planter, to pursue him in questions in the middle of that coaching session, to pursue him and the Lord through prayer in between those sessions, and to really not let him off the hook. Mike could have let me off the hook, I probably would have been surface level, I probably wouldn't have shared what I needed to share and I wouldn't have walked into the health that I feel like I'm able to walk into today because of that. Pursuit and intentionality and tenacity with those guys and it's going to go well. Dino Senesi: Yes, well I think you gave them. Pursuit, intentionality, and tenacity right? Noah Oldham: Yes. Dino Senesi: Very good, and I love that profile because there is a stream of thought in a professional coach that they make the person being coached 100% responsible for everything. I get that a coach can't be codependent or those types of things, but there's a reality in our context we're coaching for the great commission, we're coaching with the co-mission that we have with God, thus the pursuit of the planter is everything. Be not weary and well doing coach. Noah Oldham: Amen. Dino Senesi: Yes, so very good. Hey Noah, I really appreciate this snapshot of your story and your vulnerability. I know there's other layers because I've heard it, but I think that we've gotten the highlights of Mike Hubbard and your relationship with him, and also your heart to see coaches reproduced in St. Louis. If you'll check in our show notes we will include the link to August Gate Church so you could learn more about Noah Oldham. Also, my e-book has been updated for Principles and Practices of Church Planter Coaching. If you'd like to sharpen your skills in coaching it's more of a narrative version of the training we do. If you say, "I just want to read a list of things on how to ask great questions," or "I want to read a list of things on the value of pure coaching." You're that kind of reader, well that's free available on the Send Network coaching page. We'll put that link in the show notes as well to help you sharpen skills as you coach church planters. Noah, thank you for today. Noah Oldham: You're welcome, thanks for having me. Dino Senesi: Yes, very good. Until the next time, keep coaching. Did you know that 83% of small businesses around the world are not profitable? Business owners are living month-to-month and are desperately struggling. Today’s episode addresses this so that you never have to worry about living paycheck-to-paycheck again.   Mike Michalowicz is the author of several books including The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, Surge, and Profit First. He is also the Owner of Profit First Professionals, his third million dollar venture. This is Mike’s second guest appearance on the show!   Why did Mike decide to write Profit First? Believe it or not, Mike had grown his companies to multi-million dollar businesses, but was not profitable, at all. He had refinanced his house multiple times and was living check-by-check.   He thought if he could run the business long enough, they’d eventually hit their ‘big break’ and become profitable. After selling his businesess, he decided to become an angel investor with this mindset and, guess what, the 10 businesses he invested in all tanked. By making this simple shift, he was able to see things from a bigger perspective and he was forced to reverse engineer his business so it would survive on the remaining cash, no matter what.   Interview Links: Mikemichalowicz.com Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine, by Mike Michalowicz   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Topic - How Schools Use Your Tax Dollars Against You.  Mike's parents knew they had to do something. He's in the 9th grade, failing his classes and testing proved his reading was at the 3rd grade level. It was time to get a lawyer and file a complaint against the district for failing to educate their child. If Mike's parents are lucky, they'll find an effective lawyer who'll take their case on a contingency basis.  If they're unlucky, they'll write retainer checks for many thousands of dollars and the process will likely drag on for years. School districts, on the other hand, use your property tax dollars to wage war against you in this process. They hire attorneys at $400 an hour to keep your child from being educated. There's nothing fair here. Oftentimes, if districts know you don't have the money to fund the fight, they'll just wait you out. It's a battle of attrition. If you robbed a bank, you'd get a taxpayer-funded lawyer to protect your rights. What about the rights of our kids? It's time to cut off this money to schools. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message

With over 40 years of teaching between us, we'll help you improve your English and take it to the next level.Welcome Mike! [44 years, so that totals 84 years of teaching experience between us!]   Más podcasts para mejorar tu ingles en: http://www.inglespodcast.com/  More podcasts to improve your English at: http://www.inglespodcast.com/  In this episode: The past perfect simple and continuous with special guest Mike Hardinge What is the Past Perfect? Use: The Past Perfect is the past before the past. When we are already talking about the past and we want to talk about an earlier past time.It can be in a Simple or Continuous/Progressive form. PAST PERFECT SIMPLE Something that happened before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.Focus tends to be on the completion of the action/state, not the continuity of it. Form: had/ ’d + past participle (had eaten, had been, had forgotten, had seen etc) Let’s see where the past perfect simple fits in. To do this we have to look at a much more ‘important’ tense ‘the past simple’.The past simple forms the basis of a narrative; it gives us a sequence of events: Maybe last night (1) you stayed up (didn’t go to bed) to watch a film and (2) went to bed too late. In the morning, (3) you didn’t hear your alarm. (4) You woke up late. (5) You got dressed in an awful hurry, (6) didn’t have breakfast and (7) rushed out of the house. Then (8) you realised you HAD FORGOTTEN your keys. The verbs in the story have a ‘fixed’ order, except for ‘had forgotten’, which takes us back to before or during when (5) you got dressed - maybe you put on another jacket or before (7) you rushed out of the house - you didn’t check to see if you had your keys. Past perfect simple usually takes us back to a previous stage of a narrative. It is very useful for giving reasons: You couldn’t get back into your house (why?) because you HAD FORGOTTEN your keys.or obviously it could be a negative action, an action not taken, which is the case here:you couldn’t get back into your house because you HADN'T TAKEN your keys. If you had gone to bed at the right time, none of this would have happened. Examples: When Mike arrived, we had already recorded a podcastI’d never seen such an excellent system for learning phrasal verbs before I saw Mike’s CD.After she’d studied Mike’s phrasal verb CD, she understood the subject much better. We’d had our old printer for 8 years before we bought that new one. (two ‘hads’. “ ’d” = “had”) Question:(different word order) Had you ever won an award before you won in Manchester last year?Negative: (with NOT) I hadn’t/had not studied Spanish, before I came to Spain. Reza arrived late. By the time he arrived, we had already ordered our food from the waiter. As soon as he’d lit/he had lit his cigarette, the bus arrived at the stop. No sooner had he lit (OBLIGATORY INVERSION) his cigarette than the bus arrived at the stop.Reza and Craig spoke about INVERSION in episode 78 ( http://www.inglespodcast.com/2015/11/22/sentence-inversions-airc78/ ) PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS Use: Focus tends to be on the continuity of the activity/process. Something that started in the past and continued up to a particular time in the past. Can be used for more temporary actions/situations or a repeated action or a longer action interrupted by another action. Often there’s evidence that the action had been continuing more or less up to point. I HAD LIVED in Salamanca for two years before I came to Valencia. (use simple to stress the completed action)I HAD BEEN LIVING in Salamanca for two years before I came to Valencia. (use continuous to stress the continuity of an action that may, or may not, be unfinished) Present perfect simple: I HAVE READ fifteen books this year. (focus on the number of books completed)Present perfect continuous: I'VE BEEN READING the last Harry Potter book and I can't understand a word. (focus on the continuous action) Past perfect simple: Valencia HAD BEEN PLAYING very well before the new manager.Past perfect continuous: Valencia HAD WON 15 games before the new manager. Form: had/ ’d been + -ing form of the verb Back to MIke's forgotten keys story. You can’t have a bare narrative with no description and maintain interest, so: Last night....(1) you stayed up (didn’t go to bed) to watch a film. IT WAS A REALLY GREAT FILM ABOUT DRAGONS AND MONSTERS AND HEROES WERE FLYING ABOUT ALL OVER THE PLACE. As a result, (2) you went to bed too late. THE BED WASN’T MADE BUT YOU WERE TOO TIRED TO WORRY. In the morning, (3) you didn’t hear your alarm. THIS WAS HARDLY SURPRISING. (4) You woke up late. (5) You got dressed in an awful hurry, THE ROOM WAS IN A TERRIBLE MESS, THINGS WERE LYING EVERYWHERE. (6) You didn’t have time for any breakfast and you(7) rushed out of the house, like a bat out of hell. It was only after you HAD CLOSED the door that (8) you realised you HAD FORGOTTEN your keys. Description with WAS, WERE, HAD or PAST CONTINUOUS makes the narrative more palatable (rico/a, apetitoso/a). The past perfect continuous can add to this description. YOU HAD BEEN WORKING REALLY HARD AND WANTED TO GIVE YOURSELF A TREAT, so you stayed up to watch a film….you didn’t hear your alarm. You woke up late. ACTUALLY YOU HADN'T BEEN SLEEPING VERY WELL RECENTLY...YOU HADN’T BEEN LIVING IN THE FLAT FOR VERY LONG. The past perfect continuous is very useful for giving background description to a story, in a similar way as the past continuous tense. Compare: When I woke up yesterday it was raining. - The rain was falling when I woke upWhen I woke up yesterday it had been raining. - The rain wasn’t falling when I woke up. It had (recently) stopped. The ground was still wet.   Use the past perfect in 3rd conditional 'if' sentences: If I hadn't drunk so much whisky on Saturday night, I wouldn't have felt so bad on Sunday morning. If Craig HAD GOT MARRIED when he was 22, he'd have had a family at a very yound age.If Reza HADN'T STAYED in Valencia, he might have gone to Sardinia. If Mike's parents HAD TAKEN him abroad when he was really young, he would have learnt another language. If Mike HADN'T BROUGHT his daughter to Spain, she wouldn't have learnt Spanish.   ITALKI AD READ   The past perfect is also used in reported speech: "I HAD never MET Mike before I started working at the school." - Craig said that he HAD never MET Mike before he started working at the school. It's often ok to use the past simple instead of the past perfect, especially when there is a time expression: Bill had been married twice before he met Susan. (past perfect) - Bill was married twice before he met Susan. (past simple) Time expressions Mike's Basque Beret (boina) "I haven't seen Mike's beret before." / "I haven't seen Mike in a beret before." "It's the first time I have seen Mike's beret." / "It's the first time I have seen Mike in a beret." Looking back, and talking about the past, you could say, "It was the first time I had seen Mike's beret." / "It was the first time I had seen Mike in (or wearing) a beret." It's three months since I spoke English / It's three months since I've spoken English. It was three months since he had spoken English. More time expressions often used with the past perfect: by the time, before, after, as soon as, no sooner.....than....., up to then/that moment and 'because' for giving reasons: "He was very dirty BECAUSE he had just been walking in the rain." Craig went to bed early last night because he'd been exercising and he was very tired. Practice Tell a story and use the past perfect. Craig: You are a Zombie.Reza: You woke up naked on a park bench this morning. (to cut a long story short - "en resumen", "resumiendo", "y te la hago corta".....)Mike: You started speaking fluent Chinese for no apparent reason. (the long and the short of it is....."en resumen", "resumiendo", "y te la hago corta".....) Thanks Mike! Castle to Castle: A Tale of Two Disnerds - the Inspirational, International, Intersectional Disney Podcast

As it says on the tin, it's time for a little Bitesize Mike! Sorry for the delay...in fact, this episode is so late, it's almost time to record the next one! But we hope you'll enjoy this one, for now - Mike dives into the discussion over changes at Epcot, and an even newer, perhaps more surprising shift at Hollywood Studios. After saying some goodbyes and imagining what we might soon say hello to, Mike picks up on a sentiment that surely everyone agrees on - "The history of Walt Disney World belongs to EVERYONE." - pontificates, expands, and takes it to its natural conclusion, as it pertains to what we try to do as an intersectional, critical Disney fan podcast. If Mike inspired you, or if he drilled a rhetorical hole in your head, let us know! You can (of course) Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, subscribe to us and review on iTunes, and email us at disnerds@gmail.com - and, as always, enjoy! Links 'n' Stuff: Martin Smith's excellent (and very relevant!) videos, covering Epcot's Norway, and the early genesis of Disney-MGM/Hollywood Studios.
