Today we talk to one of our many If You Could See Me Project family members. Tammy Ozolins lives on the bipolar spectrum. We are excited to hear from her as a teacher and a coach in the covid climate how to navigate trying times and mental health challenges. Today she is here to help bust the monolith of a bipolar diagnosis, and the generalizations. She tells us how she advocates for what she need, how she respectfully educates those around her about her diagnosis. We are all born creatives. We then receive messages that undermine our innate creativity and squash the curiosity and courage that is needed to exercise the creative muscle. It's time to reclaim, release shame, and step into the light. It can be terrifying to step into our true selves after a lifetime of being undermined and receiving messages that undervalue the thing we want most. Donna Joyce is a WRITER - she can say that today. Getting to this place has been a journey of courage, compassion, discovery, and healing. The spring 2020 If You Could See Me participants began meeting in February of this year. They were supposed to have their show in June. As we are all aware this year has been an exercise in flexibility, persistence, acceptance, and patience and our project is not alone in having been effected. These five amazing women have continued to show-up for themselves and one another in truly remarkable ways. We had to postpone and then reimagine what shows would look like but now we are to thrilled share their stories in a brand new virtual format on Friday, January 22nd, at 7:30 pm via zoom. Roger Koller says this about himself: I am a person in recovery from multiple life challenges including grief, anxiety, and addictive behaviors. I was born and raised in Richmond and attended Collegiate School, Trinity Episcopal High School and matriculated from University of Richmond in 1994. However, from an early age I faced issues that I could not understand. Thanks to some poor decisions and bad luck and misinformation, I found myself in recovery environments at the turn of the millennium. I have learned many things along the way, and it is a continuum where there is always something to learn from someone else and something to pass on to others who have reached obstacles on the freeway for which I have found solutions that worked for me, which I am now in a position to share.. I am now a Certified Peer Support Specialist, a WRAP facilitator, a SMART Recovery Facilitator, and have started and led several support based peer groups at different peer-run centers around the Richmond area. I have also had the pleasure of serving on many local peer center boards and committees. With this non-profit organization, I want to continue to develop solutions and innovations in collaboration with others in the community in ways that both mirror and diverge from what others have already done before me. I hope that we can work together to find more solutions for ourselves and each other.Support our show by supporting our affiliates!Get the irel8 app and support The If You Could See Me Project at the same time! https://irel8.org/ifyoucouldseeme/iRel8 is a global, anonymous peer empowerment platform focused on mental wellness. This week Erin welcomed Kim Flournoy DiJoseph to the show! This powerful conversation was hopefully just the beginning of many more! Kim Flournoy DiJoseph of the shadow work integration practice, @hotmesswork, has been called a “punk rock, modern-day Chinese medicine woman” who “sees the clearest in the dark,” and described by clients as having a “unique blend of intuitive healer and coach” and “someone who does her own work, so she can prepare and guide us in ours.”With 25+ years of combined, professional practice as a psychodynamic-bent, trauma-informed therapist way before the term was a thing, a social justice and anti-violence advocate building empathy and bridges across the victim/perpetrator dichotomy, and an associate professor in teaching with emphasis in vicarious trauma and holistic wellness of social work students and practitioners, Kim is firmly grounded in a continuum of theoretical and systematically-legitimized approaches to teaching and supporting folx through crisis, grief, trauma, and change. In part catalyzed by a transformative and karmic-jolting awakening following the murder of her mother in 2012, Kim’s personal, healing journey and practice evolved into a calling to serve and offer a new-to-her way to approach supporting folx: @hotmesswork Hot Mess Work as an approach is a fluid, yet integrated merging of innate abilities, Jungian shadow work, eastern religion and Chinese shamanism, evolutionary astrology, mindfulness practice, the iChing, and whatever else just feels true and right. Regardless of the influence, the work is intuitively guided by messages and confirmations that come through psychically from Kim’s own and/or clients’ ancestors. The major emphasis of this work is accurately identifying the root of client’s stuckness and the subsequent integration of all of their parts, shadow and light -- ultimately, for folks to work on their own sh*t as a means to working on our much-needed universal collective shift.Kim is a cisgender, non-black POC mother, healer, writer, teacher, partner, consultant, and innerwork activist living and loving in Richmond, Virginia with a native Carolina blue heart. What an incredible conversation this week with Michelle Mercurio about grief, storytelling, love, growth, and letting go of what is in order to be able to accept what can be. Michelle Mercurio is...Writer. Firebrand. Catalyst. Authenticist. Boxer. My mission in life is to help people not miss their lives. Is it possible to let go of what is holding you back, align to your purpose and create your legacy? I think so. Whether I’m working with transformational entrepreneurs to write their brand’s story (and helping them create profitable businesses they love), or I’m having a porch picnic with my family and friends, I believe we could all be a little more ourselves, and a little less of who the world “expects” us to be. We are the answer we seek. Let’s make some magic in this world. There are wonderful initiatives that focus on people from all walks of life sharing their stories. The #ifyoucoulseeme project is one of them. Today we speak with its founder, Erin Mahone, and her hope to have someone on the Autism spectrum join the movement. This project has taken off, been reported on in the news, and is becoming known around the globe for its groundbreaking ability to help people be seen and heard. Erin's "day job" is as a caseworker in the state of Virginia working with families to find services for their children with special needs - many with Autism. Her great passion is providing space for difficult conversations about mental health in all areas of life. She offers audiences tips for recognizing their inner critic and shares proven strategies to develop self-compassion and quiet the voice of resistance with humor, passion, and humility. Her work is intended to change the way we talk about mental health and related issues with the understanding that to make that change we must first tackle our own shame and fear. Erin educates and empowers people of all backgrounds and experiences to use the stories of their lives to create a more just, equitable, and compassionate world understanding that everyone's story has value and innate power. Erin is the author of the book If You Could See Me: Life, Motherhood, and the Pursuit of Sanity (Author's Place Press, 2018). She is the creator of #IfYouCouldSeeMe a multi-media storytelling project designed to change the way we talk about, think about, and address mental health and related issues. Erin leads ReStory, a personal narrative coaching initiative, and she is creator of two one-woman shows, It Runs in the Family a collection of songs and stories about laughter, family, mental illness, and unconditional love; and her new show Shark Woman Meditates, an honest look into her own mental health journey. Erin is pursuing her master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Longwood University. She is particularly interested in exploring Narrative Therapy and its effectiveness in the treatment of complex trauma. Erin is a recent TEDx presenter and speaks frequently on the intersection of creativity, compassion, and change. Today’s podcast features, Erin Mahone, founder of #IfYouCouldSeeMe project. Erin’s passion is infectious as she talks about the importance of “sharing our stories.” Her work is inspired by a childhood growing up in a family touched by mental illness, years working in the arts and in the mental health field, and her own experiences with anxiety and depression. She believes that life's struggles, no matter how severe, do not define, or limit, a person’s capacity for greatness, achievement, or love. Every person has a distinct story that is worthy of respect and Erin combines storytelling, writing, music, and other elements to share and teach this message. #IfYouCouldSeeMe is a multi-media project and a podcast on the Mental Health News Radio Network that looks past labels and surface judgments to see real, diverse, fascinating people living with mental health diagnoses. They are mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, friends, artists, activists, veterans, and above all human beings with whole lives not defined by their diagnoses. The #IfYouCouldSeeMe project is a relationship between storyteller and audience; an understanding that through sharing, and by witnessing, we are all being seen.
