Join Jim and Greg for the Friday 3 Martini Lunch as they break down deep divisions among Democrats over the spending bill, the Virginia GOP's steep challenges in this year's elections, and the House Democrats losing two members in just over a week.First, Republicans finally get a chance to watch Democrats openly feud over whether to pass a spending bill to prevent a partial government shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer now reluctantly supports the bill, sparking an intense backlash from progressives. Jim also explains how Democrats are struggling to accept their minority status in Congress.Next, they wince at the prospects for Virginia Republicans in this year's elections. They usually don't go well for the party that holds the White House. Virginia is also home to the second most federal employees in the nation, and the DOGE cuts are likely to be unpopular in the DC suburbs. Republicans do have an excellent candidate in Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, but will the headwinds against her be too strong? Finally, they discuss the passing of Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, marking the second House Democrat to die in under two weeks. They note the oddity of Grijalva's X account continuing to post after his death and also examine how these vacancies will impact the House until special elections are held to fill those vacancies. Please visit our great sponsors:Oracle will cut your cloud bill in half—new US customers only, offer ends March 31st! It's Thursday, November 9th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistan detaining refugees from Afghanistan Pakistan is detaining refugees and asylum seekers from Afghanistan in preparation for deportation. Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021, there are now an estimated 1.7 million undocumented Afghans in Pakistan. International Christian Concern notes, “A significant number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan face severe persecution if forced to return. Many are Christians or members of other religious minority groups and fled the Taliban's fundamentalist Islamic rule in 2021.” Pakistan's forced deportations will likely affect refugees from Iran and Myanmar as well, where Christians face high levels of persecution. Pakistan is no friend to Christianity either, ranking 7th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. European countries cracking down on illegal immigration Speaking of deportations, Nordic countries are stepping up cooperation to stem illegal immigration. Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland agreed to set up joint flights to send migrants to a third country. The move comes as Nordic countries seek to cut refugee quotas and crack down on gang violence blamed on “irresponsible immigration policy and a failed integration.” Similarly, Germany is looking to reduce immigration and make deportations easier. In a change of policy for the country, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “We must finally deport on a large scale those who have no right to stay in Germany.” Christian wedding photographer free to decline homosexual faux weddings In the United States, a Christian wedding photographer is free to run his business in line with his beliefs after a court settlement last Friday. Alliance Defending Freedom represented Bob Updegrove in a case against a Virginia law. The law required him to celebrate homosexual ceremonies or face a fine of up to $50,000. Updegrove's victory builds on a previous religious liberty case in Colorado known as 303 Creative that went before the U.S. Supreme Court. ADF Legal Counsel Johannes Widmalm-Delphonse said, “As the Supreme Court recently affirmed in 303 Creative, the government can't force Americans to say things they don't believe. This victory for Bob underscores how the 303 Creative decision will protect countless Americans from government censorship and coercion.” Senator Tuberville to Pentagon: Stop paying for abortion travel Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama is taking heat from his fellow Republicans in the U.S. Senate for his protest against a Pentagon abortion policy. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, the military started paying travel expenses for service members to get abortions. In response, Tuberville put a hold on mass military promotions in the Senate. The chamber can still approve military nominations one at a time, but there are over 300 military promotions before the Senate. Tuberville said he will continue the hold as long as the Pentagon keeps its abortion policy. Psalm 1:1, 2 says, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Thank Senator Tuberville for his pro-life stand. You can call (334) 523-7424. Or write Senator Tommy Tuberville at Frank Johnson Annex, One Church Street, Suite 500-B, Montgomery, AL 36104. Or send him an email through a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Ohioans enshrined abortion into constitution; Virginia GOP lost House Voters across multiple states went to the polls on Tuesday with Democrats winning several elections. In Kentucky, Democrat Governor Andy Beshear won a second term, beating Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron. In Virginia, Democrats held control of the state's Senate while taking control of the House. That obliterated GOP Governor Glenn Youngkin's hope of signing a ban on abortions after the 15th week of growth in the womb. In Ohio, voters said yes to Issue 1, an amendment that enshrines abortion in the state's constitution. Issue 1 will allow abortionists to kill babies up until birth. However, in Mississippi, Republican Governor Tate Reeves won re-election for a second term. Reeves signed the anti-abortion bill that led to the U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. South Africa Rugby team, with Christian players, won 2023 World Cup And finally, South Africa won the 2023 Rugby World Cup last month, defeating New Zealand in the final that was held in France. The South African team is the first to win the tournament four times. The team is also known for multiple Christian players. Siya Kolisi captains the team and often thanks Jesus on the field, during interviews, and through social media. Another player, Pieter-Steph du Toit, was the man of the match in the latest victory. He gave thanks to God in a post-game interview. Listen. REPORTER: “Well, Pieter, Congratulations! My goodness! What a game that was. What an armed resolute that was. Tell me what is going through your mind right now.” TOIT: “Firstly, I'm going to give our Heavenly Father thanks for giving us the opportunity and for helping us as a team through this World Cup and for the whole campaign. It's an unbelievable honor and a privilege to play with this team and giving us the opportunity.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, November 9th in the year of our Lord 2023. On this episode of Pilsners and Politics Benjamin sits down with Raymond "Ray" Johnson, a financial auditor and Republican Party Activist. Raymond is located in Northern Virginia and discusses the state of the GOP at the National, State, and Local levels. Benjamin and Raymond discuss the power struggle between the new GOP (America First Republicans) and the GOP-e (The Establishment). Over the course of the last several decades the GOP-e has conceded time and time again to the radical left, leaving the Republican Party as a whole with nothing to show for it. The current issue the establishment seems willing to concede on is 2A. What is it going to take to get back to foundation that made the GOP great? Does the GOP need to move in a new direction? Listen to hear more.Virginia Republican Creed:We Believe:That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justiceThat all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free societyThat fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraints must be exercised at all levels of governmentThat the Federal Government must preserve individual liberty by observing Constitutional limitationsThat peace is best preserved through a strong national defenseThat faith in God, as recognized by our Founding Fathers is essential to the moral fiber of the Nation
Virginia GOP Chairman Rich Anderson joined WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Monday to discuss this weekend's primaries in Virginia. https://twitter.com/VA_GOP VA-10 PRIMARY: Northern Virginia Republicans chose retired Navy captain and political newcomer Hung Cao to face Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton in the race for the 10th District. Cao, a 25-year Navy veteran and first-time candidate, defeated the best-funded candidate with an eight-year record of public service, Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson (R-Brentsville). Lawson raised over $920,000 — more than twice what Cao pulled in — and had backing from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the House Republican Conference chairwoman. VA-8 PRIMARY: Republicans in the 8th District selected Karina Lipsman as their nominee at a GOP convention as well, though Republicans do not typically fare well in the deep-blue Northern Virginia district. Incumbent Rep. Don Beyer Jr. and Victoria Virasingh are running in the Democratic primary for U.S. House Virginia District 8 on June 21, 2022. VA-5 PRIMARY: Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) survived a primary challenge at a GOP nominating convention in Virginia's 5th Congressional District on Saturday, coasting to victory with an overwhelming margin of the vote. Good, one of the most conservative members of the House, faced a challenge from retired Air Force colonel Dan Moy, the chairman of the Charlottesville GOP Committee, who had accused Good of being “missing in action” on issues of national defense and the local economy. But Moy's argument swayed few, as Good enjoyed broad support from fellow Trump loyalists and religious conservatives in the reliably red district. Today’s visit to the National Day Calendar reveals what many would regard as plain old silliness. Apparently it is National Chocolate Custard Day, National Garden Meditation Day, National Two Different Colored Shoes Day and National Lumpy Rug Day. If Charlottesville Community Engagement had a budget for promotional prizes, one would go for a winning photograph in a contest to capture the essence of all four of these fantastical days. In all seriousness, May 3 is also World Press Freedom Day and I’m honored to be able to bring your this information on as many days as possible. On today’s program:The chair of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors will run for the Virginia House of Delegates Several tourist destinations across the region receive matching funds from the Virginia Tourism CorporationThe head of the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless briefs Council on progress towards getting everybody housedAnd the Albemarle Architectural Review Board takes a first look at a project to build 81 units of permanent supportive housing Today’s first shout-out goes to LEAPWe’re now well into spring, and many of us may have already turned on our air conditioning units for the first in months. Scottsville Supervisor Donna Price announced this morning on Facebook that yesterday’s leak of a Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade prompted her to file for her candidacy. “I yesterday morning filed my campaign committee paperwork to be a candidate - whether it be this year as a result of the Federal District Court case of Goldman v. Brink; or, next year as regularly scheduled,” Price wrote.Federal Judge David Novak is currently deliberating on whether Richmond Attorney Paul Goldman has the legal standing to have filed a suit claiming Virginia’s current legislative districts are unconstitutional because they are still based on the 2010 Census. The Virginia Supreme Court adopted new districts drawn by Special Masters in late December 2021 after a redistricting commission failed to reach consensus. The incumbent in the 55th District is Republican Rob Bell, who currently sits in the 58th District. The new 55th District covers most of Albemarle County, western Louisa County, and northeastern Nelson County.Price joins Kellen Squire as declared Democratic candidates in the 55th District. Squire ran against Bell in 2017 for the 58th District and was defeated 61.2 percent to 38.71 percent. Bell outraised Squire $471,519 to $115,210 that year. Squire was briefly a candidate in the 2021 Lieutenant Governor’s race. The first campaign finance report for the next House of Delegates race is not due until July 2022. In her announcement on Facebook, Price said she was running now to protect reproductive rights, which she said are one vote away from being overturned in Virginia. “While I support the legal basis of the Goldman v. Brink plaintiff, I have been holding personal concerns about elections in 2022 given the mood of the country,” Price wrote. “Those concerns no longer exist. We are in a legally existential battle for the rights of Americans.”Price was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2019 by beating Republican Michael Hallahan on a 55.21 percent to 44.44 percent margin. Hallahan raised $92,256 to Price’s $38,234. Squire, an emergency room nurse, said he will be making a formal announcement on Friday but responded to a question this morning.“I filed the first week of March, but have spent the last two months building the local, regional, and statewide support that will be necessary to win this race,” Squire wrote. “I've been told by both current and former local, regional, and statewide elected officials of both parties that the Virginia GOP intends to dump whatever resources are necessary to keep this seat in their column.” Squire credited his 2017 race with laying the groundwork for the eventual Democratic takeover of the House of Delegates and the Senate in 2019. Youngkin decries leakAs for that leak, U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts has confirmed the publication of a draft opinion.“Although the document described in yesterday’s reports is authentic, it does not represent a decision by the Court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case,” reads a press release from the Court.Roberts has directed the Marshall of the Court to investigate the source of the leak. In a statement, Governor Glenn Youngkin decried the leak and said it was premature to speculate on what the actual ruling will be. “We learned from listening to Virginians over the last year that we have much common ground on this issue. I am pro-life, and I have been very clear about that since the day I launched my campaign,” Youngkin said. As of today, there’s no ruling from Judge David Novak on the Goldman v. Brink case. Area tourism efforts receive funding from the Virginia Tourism CorporationGovernor Glenn Youngkin has announced the award of 259 grants to entities across the Commonwealth to mark National Travel and Tourism Week. The funding comes from the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Marketing Leverage Program & Regional Marketing Program Grants“This funding cycle, local partners will commit more than $12.4 million to match the VTC funding, providing more than $15 million in new marketing activity,” reads a press release sent out on Monday. Camp Albemarle seeks support for a plan to winterize the Hamner Lodge, a structure built in 1941 by the CCC and used by every 4th and 5th grade student in Charlottesville and Albemarle for the study of ecology for over 20 years. Council briefed on increase in homelessness in Charlottesville areaThe Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless (TJACH) is the lead agency in this region for the U.S. Department of Housing and Development’s Continuum of Care program. They cover an area including Charlottesville, Albemarle, and the other localities in the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission. “We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home and we believe that is a human right,” said Anthony Haro, TJACH’s executive director. (download Haro’s presentation)Haro said the goal of TJACH is to make homelessness as rare, brief, and nonrecurring as possible. He said homelessess is a symptom of a system that lacks enough resources and coordination. Every year, TJACH participates in the Point in Time survey to measure the size and scope of homelessness in a community. “Every year we do it in January with the goal of trying to identify folks at a time when we’re hoping most people are in sheltered settings because of the weather,” Haro said. The count is reported to HUD and the same methodology has been used for the past 12 years. The number of people in emergency shelters increased from 144 in January 2021 to 228 in January 2022. “The most significant shift has just occurred over this past year and it’s directly related to the pandemic and also things that the pandemic has brought with it like high housing costs and lack of available affordable housing,” Haro said. During the pandemic, congregate shelters moved to non-congregate settings as people were set up with private rooms in hotels. TJACH has partnered with Virginia Supportive Housing and the Piedmont Housing Alliance to purchase the Red Carpet Inn on U.S. 29, which has been converted to an emergency shelter. More on that in a moment.Just under seventy percent of those counted are male, and 98 percent of those counted are individuals. Fifty-two percent are white, 41 percent are Black, and seven are listed as other. Haro said the number of people who were chronically homeless dropped from 76 in 2012 to 32 in 2014. He attributes that to the opening of the Crossings at Fourth and Preston, a 60-unit single room occupancy building built by Virginia Supportive Housing. That number has begun to increase and Haro said there’s a need for more housing. “The other real key component to address unsheltered homelessness is street outreach programs and so we have street outreach though the PATH program at Region 10 which is focused people living outside with mental health and or substance issues but those resources haven’t really changed significantly in a long time,” Haro said. The Point in Time count isn’t the only metric. Haro said TJACH also measures the total number of people served each year and that figure increased from 290 in 2013 to 528 in 2021. He also said people are staying longer in emergency shelters with the average length of stay in 2021 was 136 days. “Before the pandemic it was around 40 days, 30 to 40 days in shelter was the average,” Haro said. That leads to a lack of turnover in those shelters, leading to shortages in emergency shelter capacity. Haro said the forthcoming 81-unit project at Premier Circle will provide relief when it’s built, but it will take some time. Ground is expected break ground next May and will be supported by Low Income Housing Tax Credits as well as Housing Choice Vouchers. Vice Mayor Juandiego Wade said constituents have asked him if TJACH had any outreach to people who panhandle on medians within the city. “Have you all, or is there a way to reach out to them, to say yes, here is service?” Wade said. “They say they see many of the same people in the same intersection and it concerns them. Sometimes they say it seems dangerous and I tell them there’s really not anything we can do.”Haro said many of those individuals may not be homeless. Some may be paying for hotels and some may be living in their own places. “People choose to panhandle for many different reasons,” Haro said. “For some people it’s a social interaction activity and for other people they are paying to stay in a hotel that night and so it varies widely. We do have outreach workers who are familiar with many of those individuals. There are new individuals that pop up every now and again and that I see panhandling and I notify outreach team to see if they are aware of those individuals coming through.” ARB makes comments on Premier Circle projectOn Monday, the Albemarle County Architectural Review Board took a look at the initial site for Premier Circle which involves construction of a four story building as part of a three building campus.. The property is within the county’s Entrance Corridor Review guidelines.“The focus is largely on the site landscaping and the building design in the Entrance Corridor facing elevation of the first phase one building,” said Khris Taggart, a planner with Albemarle County. Staff recommended approval of the initial site plan with some recommendations for revisions. That means things like hiding electrical equipment from view, requiring windows to avoid blank walls, and to include a plan indicating how demolition of existing structures should proceed. The building is being design by BRW Architects and they were represented by Whitney McDermott.“The TJACH Premier Circle initial plan before you today is a component of a larger vision that is a partnership between the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for, Homeless, Virginia Supportive Housing who are developing the building before you today, and the Piedmont Housing Alliance,” McDermott said. McDermott said the design of the whole plan is to allow for the existing motel units to exist for as long as possible. The Piedmont Housing Alliance will eventually build a 60-unit multifamily building as part of phase 2 and the third phase will be a future mixed-use building. 2022 Colorado gubernatorial candidate Greg Lopez is in-studio with Kim to dissect what happened in Tuesday's election nationwide, ramifications for Colorado in the future, and why 2022 is the time to elect him governor of our state. Greg believes that the government, intentionally, has made itself too difficult to understand as noted in the language of Colorado ballot questions. There were half-truths in the ballot questions. “We the people” want a smaller government that is simplified and easy to participate in as citizens. Yvonne was present at Monday's rally to protest Larimer County Public Health's mandate of vaccination passports. This mandate is a direct assault on the residents as it includes mandated masks, a vaccination verification program that must be enforced by the businesses, and infringing on the privacy of individuals as every paying customer will be asked to “show their card.” The businesses are rewarded with tax dollars as they harass their customers. This is discrimination. Say NO now or the tyranny will only grow into other aspects of your life. And remember, they want your children and our children will pay the price most heavily as victims. RNC spokesperson Paris Dennard joins Kim to discuss Tuesday's election. Virginia GOP wins were not unexpected as Youngkin related to the voters' issues and kept his messaging centered around the economy, public safety and education. What the Democrats are pushing is not what the voters want. Hard to believe they are doubling down on their agenda as Pelosi is searching for a big spending “win.” Paris is optimistic as long as we stay vigilant and galvanize our strength by attending local meetings. We must elect representatives who focus on prosperous jobs, secure borders, election integrity and lowering crime in our neighborhoods. Karen Levine, show sponsor as well as sponsor of the America's Veterans Stories, addresses the velocity of housing. Home ownership is under attack as multi-family housing structures are being built in favor of single-family housing; multi-family housing is predominantly apartments that entail renters with no rights. Karen and Kim also talk about teens in Karen's Bible study group that use America's Veterans Stories as an educational tool for their history studies. This Sunday Kim will be interviewing Rick McFadden who shares the history of the Marines. Tune in to KLZ 560 AM and KLZ 100.7 FM at 3pm,MT. To protect your investment in your home when buying or selling give Karen a call at 303-877-7516. Greg and Kim continue their conversation on his candidacy. Greg states a number of issues here in Colorado that must be reversed. Greg sees the erosion of the American Dream due to government policies and the Democrats vision of what America should be. The government is full of people that are not leaders and not representing the interests of “We the People.” Colorado rural communities are completely ignored by the present governor with Meat-Out Day as one example. Housing policies, as Karen stated, do not protect homeownership and instead we see the World Economic Forum rhetoric of “you will own nothing” instituted. Water is very important to our rural communities and they see the state and federal government enacting policies that will redirect the water to the populated Denver metro area. The governor's reaction to the COVID-19/Wuhan-China virus was disastrous for individuals and many businesses as he classified employees as either “essential or non-essential.” Now the governor is taking control of hospital admissions when the data does not support any emergency orders. Staffing shortages due to the state vaccination mandate which resulted in, on average, one-third of staff leaving healthcare, has created bed shortages not out of control COVID cases. With Greg as governor, the state of Colorado will operate under the 10th Amendment which states, “the powers not deleg

Good morning, RVA! It’s 45 °F, and after this morning’s clouds clear, today looks pretty great. Expect highs in the 70s, some sunshine, and a chance to spend some time outside in a garden.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 336 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 7 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 36 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 16, Henrico: 15, and Richmond: 5). Since this pandemic began, 1,295 people have died in the Richmond region. The seven-day average of new reported cases across the state sits at 723. I say don’t get too distracted by today’s extremely low number of new reported cases (just 14 new reported hospitalizations and 7 new reported deaths, too). Keep your eyes on those seven day averages, which, thankfully, also continue to decrease.Last night, the FDA authorized the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use in kids 12–15. Amazing! The next step here is for the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to give Pfizer For Kids the go ahead, and then pharmacies, pediatricians, and health departments across the country can start vaccinating tweens and teens. ACIP has a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, which you can watch live if you really want! I’d expect a similar announcement from the FDA about Moderna, too, in the coming weeks. I also wanted to mention two round numbers that our stupid human brains, for some reason, are designed to care about: over 4 million Virginians have received at least one dose of the vaccine and over 3 million Virginians are fully vaccinated.I’ve got the teensiest of budget news: City Council met last night and approved the Richmond Public Schools budget. Kenya Hunter at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has the details. Hunter reports that Councilmember Lynch has the same question I have about this version of the school budget and recent push for schools to run the facilities procurement and construction process: “Fifth District Councilwoman Stephanie Lynch sparked the discussion by asking whether the schools’ proposal would need to be revised to pay for people to oversee construction.” I don’t see the answer in this RTD piece—but it seems like an important thing to know? Right? If Schools needs to hire approx 10 new people, that seems like a hefty budget increase (or a hefty cut from somewhere else). Anyway, I’ll go listen back to The Boring Show once I get it online later today and try to dig up some answers that way.Michael Martz, also at the RTD, has an update on the American Rescue Plan money headed to Virginia. Our state’s independent city system, which is unique in the nation, means weird things happen when we compare our data to other cities' data. Usually it means we make top lists like the Most Number of Tattoo Parlors Per Capita (small denominator). I also suspect it has at least something to do with why five of Virginia’s cities made the top ten list of highest rate of eviction judgments in that NYT evictions piece a while back. It also means that Virginia’s cities get two ARP payments from the federal government: One for being a city and one for being a county. That means Richmond will see something like $155 million over the next couple of years! City Council will most likely have a some meetings after they pass this year’s budget to discuss how to spend that sweet, sweet ARP money—so keep an eye out. Despite wanting to take a holistic look at how a once-in-a-generation influx of cash could impact Richmond, several councilmembers have already earmarked bits and pieces of ARP money for projects here and there. We’ll see how big-picture they can stay once all this money eventually drops in their laps.Richmond BizSense’s Jonathan Spiers reports on a new plan for apartments at 17th and E. Grace Street aka the former Weiman’s Bakery property (which also includes a bunch of surface-level parking lots). The developer plans to build 145 apartments, commercial store fronts, and only 85 parking spaces. I think that’s not even a sarcastic “only”! Just a little over half a parking space per unit seems pretty good for Richmond. I’d love for folks to share with me examples of developers making it work with even less parking. The Virginia GOP has settled on Glenn Youngkin as their gubernatorial nominee, and Ned Oliver at the Virginia Mercury has a bit of a bio piece on him. Youngkin has basically no political experience, no voting record, and tons of personal wealth to contribute—all things the statewide Republican Party feels like they need to be competitive. Here’s all you need to know about Youngkin: “He launched his campaign with a focus on election security and has refused to say whether he believes President Joe Biden won the election legitimately.” Shameful. This morning’s longreadA current list of my top problems in pressthinkI’ve followed Jay Rosen for yeas now, and his thoughts on how media works (or should work) are fascinating—and usually dead on. Read this piece on some of the problems he sees for media in the immediate post-Trump world.By anti-democratic I mean willing to destroy democratic institutions to prevail in the contest for power. This is true, not only of individual politicians, but of the party as a whole. As (Republican) and Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson writes, “For the activist base of the Republican Party, affirming that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential contest has become a qualification for membership in good standing.” A qualification for membership. Journalists had adapted to the old system by developing a “both sides” model of news coverage. It locates the duties of a non-partisan press in the middle between roughly similar parties with competing philosophies. That mental model still undergirds almost all activity in political journalism. But it is falling apart. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the Day
