Braga, King, and Ski talk about A Knight's Tale, a classic romance starring Heath Ledger as a peasant squire who tries to win the heart of Shannyn Sossamon and the title as best jouster in the world. It's a cult classic. Is it any good? Listen!
“This is gooning for people who like nice stuff.” - Chris On this week's holiday episode, we're chatting about the Christmas snooze, The Holiday! Is this considered a Christmas classic? Why couldn't we just have one of these storylines instead of both of them vying for movie supremacy? How little romantic chemistry do Kate Winslet and Jack Black have with one another? Besides The Talented Mr. Ripley, has Jude Law been any more handsome than this movie? Why did Nancy Meyers put so little detail and conflict in this screenplay? How humiliating is it when they make Kate Winslet do all that Jack Black-style scatting? PLUS: The guys wish to party with the great Hans Zimmer after one of his big-ass rock concerts! The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Edward Burns, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Bill Macy, Shelley Berman, Kathryn Hahn, John Krasinski, and Eli Wallach as Arthur; directed by Nancy Meyers. It's the one you've all been waiting for - our episode on Alfonso Pineda Ulloa's 2014 film THERE ARE NO SAINTS, adapted from an unmade Schrader script, which sat on a shelf for 8 years before getting dumped on VOD after his FIRST REFORMED/CARD COUNTER comeback. What's that? You don't know what this movie is and you don't really want to hear us talk about it? Great news - this episode was recorded live (to tape) at Ian's home in Oaxaca, is mostly about Jake's visit there, and contains shocking revelations that turn much of PCFM's Ian Lore upside down. Plus some talk about neo-exploitation cinema, John Wick riffs, narcocultura, and eating bugs. Fun ep, check it out! This week the pod welcomes back Thomas Lecaque and John Wyatt Greenlee along with #HATM newcomer Anna Waymack to talk about maybe the best medieval movie ever made: A Knight's Tale. We talk Chaucer, romance, Heath Ledger, the Black Prince, and that fucking soundtrack. Let's go.About our guests:Thomas Lecaque is an associate professor of History at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. He specializes in the nexus of apocalyptic religion and political violence. He has written for the Washington Post, Religion Dispatches, Foreign Policy and The Bulwark, among others. Follow him on Twitter: @tlecaque.John Wyatt Greenlee is a medievalist and a cartographic historian. His academic research is primarily driven by questions of how people perceive and reproduce their spaces: how movement through the world — both experiential and imagined — becomes codified in visual and written maps. You can find him on twitter at @greenleejw Anna Waymack, is a Ph.D. candidate in Cornell's Medieval Studies Program, and was selected as a fellow in Olin Library's Summer Graduate Fellowship for Digital Humanities in 2016. As part of that fellowship, Anna developed digital humanities expertise and produced a public website focused on an aspect of her research, Geoffrey Chaucer and the charge of raptus brought forth by Cecily Chaumpaigne.
This week, he will, he will rock you as we begin the first themeless month on the pod in quite a while with a movie that Hayley has seen north of 50 times and Justin has never seen before now. It's 2001's A Knight's Tale, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, and starring Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Laura Fraser and James Purefoy. It's the movie that firmly cemented Ledger as a movie star, as Helgeland crafts an underdog sports movie in the world of medieval jousting. Plus we've got theatrical field trips to report on as Hayley caught Drive-Away Dolls this week, while J Mo took in the Tenet re-release on 70mm. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, A Knight's Tale is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Macbeth, Dune: Part 2, Madame Web, Mr. 3000, Top Gun, 10 Things I Hate About You, Lords of Dogtown, I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight, Capote, Dark City, Dazed & Confused, Rollerball, Payback, The Order, L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, Blood Work, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. We'll be back next week to celebrate one full year of ADHD-DVD as we die and go to buddy-cop heaven with Stallone and Kurt Russell in 1989's Tango & Cash. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
We're getting Christmassy and watching the 2006 romantic comedy, The Holiday! Winking, showing vs telling, comedic sobbing, crazy girlfriends, public singing, turtlenecks, nice guys who tell you they're nice, what is meant to be funny… we're breaking it all down! The Holiday is a 2006 American romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Coproduced by Bruce A. Block, it was filmed in both California and England and stars Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as Iris and Amanda, two lovelorn women from opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, who arrange a home exchange to escape heartbreak during the Christmas and holiday season. Jude Law and Jack Black were cast as the film's leading men Graham and Miles, with Eli Wallach, Shannyn Sossamon, Edward Burns, and Rufus Sewell playing key supporting roles. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa

The Devil Made Me Do It continues with what we've determined is a little seen movie that is the YOUNGEST of the movies covered this month: THE ORDER from Brian Helgeland, who wrote and directed this in 2003. This one reunites three actors from Helgeland's 2001 A Knight's Tale: Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, and Mark Addy. Joining that trio is Benno Fuhrmann and the legend Peter Weller. From IMDB: A young priest is sent to Rome to investigate the troubling death of the head of his order. Chris, the husband, is joining us for our review of A Knight's Tale, starring Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk and Laura Fraser. Tread Perilously's Crossover month finally delivers on the long-promised look at the Bones and Sleepy Hollow crossover: "The Resurrection in the Remains" and "Dead Men Tell No Tales." When the Bones team uncovers a headless corpse from the 18th Century next to the fresh corpse they were called to investigate, Abby Mills and Ichabod Crane make the drive from Sleepy Hollow to "assist" Brennan and Booth while also claiming rights to the dry bones. And once they arrange for transport, Brennan and Booth must help them uncover a 250-year-old mystery in order to stop Draugir from killing everyone in town. Erik finally experiences Sleepy Hollow while Justin recalls why he even suggested this crossover in the first place all those years ago. The pair get lost in the weeds discussing "chummy" character crossovers. Justin considers why The Simpsons lost ground with the younger generations. Erik declares Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way to be one of the great literary characters. The clash of tones between the two shows sets the episodes apart. Americana proves to be a great source of comedy, as does Sleepy Hollow's Shannyn Sossamon. Justin offers one key pet peeve about Sleepy Hollow and the motion picture Flatliners becomes surprisingly important.
In this episode we discuss torturing Troy's brain with ASMR, hanging a cape out Mike's butt and Grimcutty.

Tune in as Shelby Schwieterman and Sam Frontera (The Rom Complex) hang out on 2CC to cover the 2001 rock ‘n roll medieval sports adventure, A Knight's Tale. They also chat about Nike product placement, the aural creativity of foley artists, and whether or not Rufus Sewell always plays villains (considering Arthur looked up The Man in the High Castle post-recording and found out that he does indeed play the main antagonist as the Reichsführer of Nazi America, let's say the answer is “yes”). Directed by Brian Helgeland (42), A Knight's Tale stars Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, Berenice Bejo, James Purefoy, and Christopher Cazenove. Spoilers start at 12:00 Note: Arthur was mistaken. Helgeland's Legend is a gangster movie, not a spy movie. Good Word: • Sam: ABC's Abbott Elementary • Shelby: House of Leaves by Mark Z. What if I told you that the writer/director of “A Knight's Tale” teamed up with the stars of that film (Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy) to make a religious thriller about the seedy underworld of Catholicism? We're back for a show covering two animated family films you can watch right now on Netflix, 'The Willoughbys' & 'The Mitchells vs. the Machines'. Also, with the 20th Anniversary of one of our absolute favourite films (and if you're anything like us, definitely one of your favourites too!) we couldn't help but talk about it so we chat about 2001's 'A Knight's Tale'. There's a lot of animated films out there to choose from and it's quite hard to separate some of the blander choices from the truly worthwhile stuff but our two choices showcase massive energy, unconventional visuals and true heart that really make them stand out. From the surreal and dark yet expansive and bubbly Willoughbys to the tech-obsessed, star-studded sugar rush of The Mitchells vs. the Machines, we're celebrating some family films that aim higher than they really needed to and really pull it off! Of course, we couldn't pass up on the chance of talking about A Knight's Tale for its 20th anniversary, a film that's really close to our hearts and joyously breaks the mould for sports movies & period pieces with anachronistic glee! We talk about the amazing performances that really bring the film together from Shannyn Sossamon, Heath Ledger and of course the magnifcent Paul Bettany. With Bowie on the soundtrack & Chaucer as an inspiration (and main character!), what could go wrong! As per the usual gremlins in the wires, the last few minutes of the show were missing from the recording but we'd wrapped up the reviews & recommendations so it only means a rather abrupt end rather than a technological catastrophe (no PAL Labs robot takeover here!). Hope you enjoy! 0:00 - Quick Technical Difficulties Disclaimer 0:36 - Intro & The Willoughbys Review 19:55 - The Mitchells vs. the Machines Review 35:05 - A Knight's Tale Review Tracks Played: Talking Heads - (Nothing But) Flowers David Bowie - Golden Years And our call to action! We're talking Rocky Horror, Lord of the Rings, Shaun of the Dead, Mamma Mia, anything you can recite quotes of in your sleep (You've been weighed, measured and found wanting!) This time, we cover someone's favorite love story in the form of the indie film, Wristcutters: A Love Story. Wristcutters: A Love Story is a unique take on road trip movies and, in some ways, the romantic comedy. Wristcutters: A Love Story stars Patrick Fugit, Shannyn Sossamon, and Tom Waits. We discuss the art of the voiceover, the beauty of Tom Waits, and whether this movie could exist in today's environment. Couch Potato Theater: A Knight's Tale (2001) 20th Anniversary. On this episode of Couch Potato Theater, your hosts Kevin Reitzel, Kyle Wagner, Hayley Stoddart & Lacee Aderhold celebrate and discuss one of Heath Ledger's earliest and fan favorite films, and celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the original release (May 11th 2001) of A Knight's Tale! A Knight's Tale is a 2001 American quasi-medieval adventure comedy-romance film. It was written, produced, and directed by Brian Helgeland; it stars Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell, Laura Fraser, Paul Bettany (as Geoffrey Chaucer), and James Purefoy (as Sir Thomas Colville / Edward the Black Prince). The story is presented in an anachronistic style, with many modern references and background music. It follows a peasant named William Thatcher, a squire who poses as a knight and competes in tournaments, winning accolades and acquiring friendships with such historical figures as Edward the Black Prince and Geoffrey Chaucer. Welcome to Couch Potato Theater here on the Fandom Podcast Network. On Couch Potato Theater we celebrate our favorite movies! You may own your favorite movies digitally, or on physical media. Shannyn Sossamon (‘A Knight's Tale', '40 Days and 40 Nights', ‘The Holiday') is an Actor and Georgie was SO excited to have her join the podcast this week. Georgie grew up to some of the movies that Shannyn was part of and she asks Shannyn what it was like being the lead role in these blockbusters. They chat about working with Heath Ledger, finding your way in Hollywood and Shannyn tells Georgie about her brilliant variety show, ‘The Maude Room'.
Jozef and Lydia watch the homo-erotic early 2000s favorite of their childhood, The Rules of Attraction, starring James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, and Ian Somerhalder, and compare it to other repressed gay mens' works. Media Mentioned in this Episode: Shadow and Bone (TV) Falcon and the Winter Soldier (TV) Ginny and Georgia (TV) Mitchell vs the Machines (Film) The Lodge (Film) The Green Knight (Trailer) Things Heard and Seen (Film) Twister (Film) American Psycho (Film) Fight Club (Film) The Wolf of Wall Street (Film) Chungking Express (Film)
Can you believe it's been 20 years since Heath Ledger and Shannyn Sossamon donned 14th century attire for a David Bowie dance sequence in Brian Helgeland's jousting action comedy "A Knight's Tale"? Or that it's been 15 years since Sofia Coppola followed up her Oscar win with an 80s New Wave-scored take on "Marie Antoinette" with Kirsten Dunst and fellow Coppola, Jason Schwartzman? We feel old. For this special anniversary episode, we'll be joined by film and culture writer Abid Anwar to reevaluate these period piece/genre mashups and see if they hold up after all these years. Is Heath Ledger the secret to A Knight's Tale's best scene? Can Shannyn Sossamon don any fucked up haircut imaginable and still be unreasonably beautiful? How much would Paul Bettany ass can you show and still get a PG-13 rating? Does anyone actually want to see Sofia Coppola tackle racism and 18th century French politics in her movies? Was the boo'ing really necessary at Marie Antoinette's Cannes debut? Does anyone *actually* want to give a movie a 10 minute standing ovation? There's only one place to find out.

Written and directed by Roger Avery (Pulp Fiction) and based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho), this movie zooms in on a group of overprivileged college kids who are just terrible to each other. A darkly comedic (and very liberal) adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel about college students who are drug addicted, suicidal, and/or sociopathic. It's horrific but is it a horror film? Written for screen and Directed by Roger Avary. Starring James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder, Jessica Biel, Kip Pardue, Kate Bosworth, Jay Baruchel, Clifton Collins Jr., Faye Dunaway, Fred Savage, Swoosie Kurtz, Paul Williams & Russell Sams How is the world wrong about this film? From Bryan: A lot of people, including critics, were rightfully turned off by this movie. It’s hella upsetting at times. But, just because a movie is about unlikable people doesn’t make it a bad movie. An early 21st masterpiece from Roger Avary (Killing Zoe, Pulp Fiction). Is it really a period drama, or is it an action/adventure movie? We don't care! We're going hard on hair in this episode of Eyre on Air. This week, Joe, Jenn, and Kelsey tackle A Knight's Tale starring the late, great Heath Ledger, and the just okay Shannyn Sossamon.
This week we watched the 2001 classic (of my high school heart), A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Paul Bettany, Rufus Sewell and Alan Tudyk. Despite the killer cast, this movie doesn’t super duper hold up, but it’s a fun time if you can turn your brain off.
As we reach the era of Josh Hartnett: Movie Star, we travel back to the weird world of early-2000s sex comedies. This week we’re talking about 40 Days and 40 Nights, the sex comedy about Josh Hartnett not having sex, which is a much weirder movie than we expected. Listen in for exciting talk about incels, Shasta McNasty, the career of Shannyn Sossamon, and our grand theory about the Town & Country cinematic universe.
One of Gordy's favourite movies of all time comes to the 3 Man Table this week. It's one Cross had seen at release, however he'd forgotten enough of it to warrant a revisit. Based on Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name we tackle The Rules of Attraction. Written and Directed by Roger Avary and starring a post-Dawson's Creek Van Der Beek. As well as Shannyn Sossamon, Ian Somerhalder and Kip Pardue. Moral choices and life experiences come into the discussions as well as the usual nonsense. As usual, any feedback, reviews, comment and suggestions for future output is always appreciated! Happy listening folks.
This week's episode is about one of my favorite guilty-pleasure movies; A Knight's Tale. This movie stars Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, and Shannyn Sossamon, but is really filled out by some great supporting work from Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, Mark Addy and James Purefoy. A Knight's Tale was the big coming out party for Heath Ledger as he had really not done much before this other than 10 Things I Hate About You, which seems really strange because what is essentially a sports movie about a sport that hasn't been seriously played for hundreds of years is not exactly the formula for a break out, but that's exactly what happened. He's undeniably charming, his acting is solid, and you can tell that he did a lot of the stunts himself, which definitely adds to the entertainment factor.
This week we're talking about A Knight's Tale (2001), written and directed by Brian Heleland, and starring Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, James Purefoy, Shannyn Sossamon, and Laura Fraser. While it's not a great film, A Knight's Tale is definitely fun, and provides you with a harmless enough viewing experience. With the subversive approach to music and sporting events presented, we would have liked something a bit more as far as social commentary, but at least we got a killer Paul Bettany performance here. If you want to talk about A Knight's Tale, shoot us an email at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@Gmail.com.
SPOILERS FOR PENNY DREADFUL SEASONS 1 & 2 (and minor spoilers for Season 3). In this episode: In anticipation of the new season, we discuss the first two seasons of Showtime's Gothic horror series Penny Dreadful, including the overall style of the show, the characters, the cast, and yes, werewolves, potentially of the sexy variety. We (read: Ian) can't escape talking about this show without comparing it to a variety of other media, including NBC's Dracula, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Walking Dead, and yes, Hannibal, among others. How unrelenting bleakness can become wearying I think we should also clarify that this isn't a blanket critique of all bleak narratives. I think we're just inundated with them at the moment. There's also a very troubling association in pop culture at the moment of bleakness with maturity, as though any story without a bleak philosophy is somehow childish, which I think is more what we're criticizing here. The snails return. The Snailening Novel class returns. The Novelening. The Robertsoning. We start digging into the way narratives that are attempting to tell different types of stories can show us two wildly different facets of a character with each interpretation being an equally valid expression of the character. WEREWOLVES WEREWOLVES WEREWOLVES. THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: Just as an aside: We're approaching our 100th episode! We have ideas planned out for the next few episodes, but is there anything in particular you'd want to see/hear us do for the 100th episode? Let us know in the comments below or through one of our various forms of contact on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook Holy crap, we didn't even talk about how much I (Ian) love the music on this show. In particular: Dido's Lament ("When I am laid in earth") from Dido and Aeneas is my favorite aria I learned about in college, and THEY USED IT. Highlights from Fio's notes: I'm honestly curious how many times we reference Hannibal in episodes that are, like, explicitly not about Hannibal. In the Era of Dystopian Future Literature and Apocalyptic Stuff should be a book of essays. “I wouldn't advise them,” so fucking magnanimous, Fio, of course the Penny Dreadful writing staff listens to this podcast. At this point in the podcast I go silent because I'm looking up 40 Days and 40 Nights because I can't remember if Shannyn Sossamon is in it or not.
