Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! This past Saturday night at 11:53 PM, Tara Dower set the fastest known time on the Appalachian Trail in 40 days 18 hours 5 minutes, besting Karel Sabbe's 2018 mark by 13 hours and 32 minutes.Starting August 12th at 5:47 AM, Dower averaged 54+ miles per day over 2,197.4 miles of rugged and relentless terrain from Maine to Georgia to set the mark.In masterfully riding a fine line of passion, grit, faith, and resourcefulness, Tara and her crew have set a new standard on this trail. I said this on an Instagram post shortly after the news broke, but I'll say it here as well - it's easy to get caught up in the moment, especially in a year that has seen the likes of the first female Barkley finisher, a UTMB course record, and a Hardrock course record - but is this the female performance of the year? Or better yet, is this the overall performance of the year regardless of gender? This is an amazing time to be in the sport. With all that said, we were fortunate to have Tara on the podcast shortly after her feat. In this conversation, we cover topics all about the Appalachian Trail record around her background, preparation, strategy, execution, mindset, and processing of this monumental achievement. Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! This conversation with Warren Doyle might need a bit of context if you're not well-versed in the long-distance thru-hiking scene in North America. Warren is a prominent figure in the Appalachian Trail community. While there's some debate about the exact beginning of the modern fastest known time (FKT) scene on the AT, Warren's impressive 1973 record of 66 days and change is widely considered a significant milestone.Warren's contributions to the trail are extensive. Over a 45-year period, he led eight large-group “circle” expeditions with near 100% completion rates. He founded the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association and established the Appalachian Trail Institute, which has helped thousands of hikers achieve their thru-hiking goals. He has also played a key role in preparing notable figures like Jenn Pharr Davis and Liz Derstine for record-setting endurance attempts, and has advised many other prominent endurance athletes, including Karel Sabbe.I'm excited to have Warren on the show for several reasons. First and foremost, my deep love for the AT and my ongoing quest to understand its history. Warren has been a central figure in shaping the trail's scene over the past 40 to 50 years. In our conversation, we'll explore topics like the nature of endurance records on long trails, the purpose of the AT, social change, the impact of the outdoor industry on thru-hiking culture, the relationship between government and nature, and much more.Regardless of your familiarity with the scene, I think you'll find this episode engaging. Warren is a vibrant and generous conversationalist, and I'm sure you'll gain a lot from our discussion.Timestamps:02:00 Introduction and Backlash on the AT10:34 The Commercialization of the Outdoor Industry17:48 The Relationship Between the Trail and the Government25:22 The Importance of Substantive Conversations on the Trail40:10 Regulations and Policing of Mount Katahdin44:39 The Amateur Aspect of Endurance Hiking47:26 The Role of Support Crews in Endurance Record Attempts01:03:36 Challenges of Reintegrating into Society after the AT01:11:54 Embracing a Wilderness State of Mind01:17:04 Supporting Dreams and Moving Forward01:24:05 The Role of a Social Change Educator01:31:55 Concerns about the Future of the Appalachian Trail Sponsors:Naak - use code SINGLETRACK20 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 20% off your purchase.Rabbit - use code Singletrack10 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/) to get 10% off your next order.Pillar Performance - use code Singletrack15 at checkout on their website (https://pillarperformance.shop/) to get 15% off your next order.deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20) to get 20% off your next order. Additional Links:Warren's Website, Outside FeatureSupport the Show.

Spoiler alert: adaptatie is key! Meltzer's trail runs have been featured in news outlets from Ultrarunning.com to NBC Sports. Meltzer has been a professional ultramarathoner since 1999, and a coach since 2007. While many ultramarathoners tend to be vegetarian, vegan, and anti-alcohol or caffeine, Meltzer has been seen with bacon, Red Bull, and microbrews. On September 18, 2016, Meltzer set an Appalachian Trail record by completing the 2,190 miles over 14 states in 45 days 22 hours, and 38 minutes. This achievement was featured in a 2017 documentary movie "Made To Be Broken". Meltzer's record was eclipsed in September 2017 by Joe McConaughy in a self-supported run. For the fifth year in a row, no one could best the infamously rugged course in trail's quirkiest event. For the fifth year in a row, there were no finishers at the infamous Barkley Marathons. An incredibly deep field was lined up to face the beast. This included a mix of Barkley veterans like Courtney Dauwalter, and 2017 and 15th-person ever Barkley finisher John Kelly and strong Barkley virgins like Big's Backyard record holder Harvey Lewis, 2017 Big's champion Guillaume Calmettes, and Appalachian Trail FKT holder and Belgian dentist Karel Sabbe.   Other runners like Amelia Boone, Gary Robbins, and Johan Steene were originally slated for the 2022 race, but dropped out due to injuries, moving on, and testing positive at the airport, respectively.  The 2022 edition was particularly heavy on international runners after the cancellation of the 2020 edition and pandemic-related travel restrictions for the 2021 race.   For the 2022 race, Barkley creator Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell threw one of the biggest curveballs in race history, holding the event three weeks ahead of when it normally runs around April 1. Additionally, he held the race in the middle of the week with the race starting on Tuesday, March 8.   There were concerns that the earlier time slot could create more difficult weather challenges, but when the conch was blown at 5:54 a.m. on Tuesday, relatively average Barkley conditions awaited. The race started cold but warmed up a lot during the day. Runners seemed to favor this, with a total of 30 out of 38 runners completing the first loop and starting a second. This was a Barkley record.   However, when night fell on day one, so did freezing rain. This was reminiscent of the 2019 race when rain took out most of the field overnight.   As a result, only five were able to start a Fun Run loop, which is three loops. This group included Sabbe, Kelly, British runner Jasmin Paris, New Zealander Greig Hamilton, and Danish runner Thomas Dunkerbeck. Paris is the first woman in a decade to complete a Fun Run.   Of these five, Sabbe, Kelly, and Hamilton were able to finish three loops with time to start the fourth loop. Sabbe came in first from loop three in 32:21:49 and left just under 20 minutes later. Hamilton returned to camp in 34:20:39 and left for loop four with daylight 34 minutes later.     Chris Froome says data has made pro cycling more competitive and more dangerous Chris Froome believes the depth and breadth of data in professional cycling has raised the bar in terms of the overall standard of performance but also made the sport more dangerous.   The four-time Tour de France winner started his career back in 2008 and is now in his 15th season as a professional. In that time, he says the sport has changed beyond recognition.   "Across the board we've seen a huge raise of the bar in terms of the general level of performance in professional cycling," Froome said in a sponsor video for Quad Lock.   The main driver of that change has been, according to Froome, the rise of power meters, which measure the force being pushed through the pedals and can help riders judge their efforts. Whereas riders in the past may have raced or trained on feel, Froome noted that performances are now more dictated by numbers.   Froome himself was known in his pomp for carefully measuring his efforts and not being afraid to drop briefly rather than risk going into the red, but he claimed that even in the last few years, the advances in power and other performance-related data have changed the game for professional cyclists generally.   "There are quite a few different technologies that have played a massive part in shaping the sport in this last 10 to 15 years. First and foremost, the amount of data available through power meters and the collection and correlation of all that data means that performances now are lot more guided," Froome said.   "In the past, power meters been a round for a while but no one really understood how to train with them or what the data really meant. Now we've just got so much data, from the guys who are winning the biggest races in the world, and that data helps forms the basis of all the training plans and all the preparations that lead to racing.   “Everyone has structured training now. Very seldom do you come across someone who just gets on their bike and rides. Everyone's got a plan, a coach, a structure to follow, which has been a big change compared to 15 years a go.”   Dangers As well as making the sport more competitive, Froome also pointed out a drawback to the datafication of professional cycling. Having recently held forth on safety issues relating to time trial bikes and gravel roads, the 36-year-old suggested that new technology is making the sport more dangerous.   Froome referred chiefly to modern mapping technology in making the point that every rider knows exactly what to expect from the route of any given race. Directors can study race roads in minute detail, and they feed that information to the riders in real time.   "We've just got this abundance of data coming through to us about conditions for the road coming up, so everyone knows what to expect and you get this huge fight for position," Froome said.   "It's mental. Someone says to you, ‘right guys, you're going through this really narrow dangerous little village coming up, the road's really tiny and there's small bridge with a corner straight after', and we actually go faster, because you want to be the ones to get there first. If you're at the back, you're going to be stuck in this backlog trying to get through the pinch point. It's probably the only sport where someone tells you there's danger up ahead and the pace lifts. It's mental.   “I think racing has, as a result of that, become more dangerous. Through having more data it's basically made the race more dangerous. Previously we wouldn't have known necessarily that each pinch point was there and there wouldn't have been this massive scurry for position. We'd have just got there and all been more relaxed and got through it with no issues. But that's changed quite a bit.”   Froome has yet to race in 2022 after suffering a knee injury over the winter, but is back in full training and expecting to make his season debut this month.     What's New in the 303:   Long, Knibb, Snyder, McDowell–Coloradan's Named Triathletes of the Year Olympic and Paralympic Medalists Headline 2021 Elite Triathletes and Elite Paratriathletes of the YearUsa COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – USA Triathlon announced its 2021 Elite, Under-23, Rookie and Junior Triathletes of the Year, as well as its Elite Paratriathletes and Paratriathlon Development Athletes of the Year, both presented by Wahoo Fitness.   Katie Zaferes (Cary, N.C.) was named the Women's Olympic/World Triathlon Triathlete of the Year for the fourth time, and Kevin McDowell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned his first-ever Men's Olympic/World Triathlon Triathlete of the Year honors. Kendall Gretsch (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Brad Snyder (Baltimore, Md.), along with his guide Greg Billington (Poway, Calif.), were named 2021 Elite Paratriathletes of the Year   Zaferes, 32, won bronze at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, becoming the third U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal, joining Gwen Jorgensen (gold, 2016 Rio) and Susan Williams (bronze, 2004 Athens). Zaferes then led off Team USA as the first leg in the Olympic debut of the Mixed Relay event, helping the team earn silver, and her second Olympic medal in Tokyo.   Zaferes capped her season on the draft-legal World Triathlon Championship Series circuit by placing fourth at the World Triathlon Championship Finals. She also finished third overall in the Super League Triathlon Championship Series.   “I am very honored to receive this award considering how many of the USA women had great achievements last year,” Zaferes said. “It's extra special for me because this year was so challenging. I'm proud of being able to regroup and refocus with the assistance of the team of people that surrounds me in order to achieve one of my biggest goals, which was to win a medal at the Olympics.”   McDowell, 29, made his Olympic debut in Tokyo and showed his Mixed Relay prowess as Team USA's second leg in the race that features four athletes (two male, two female) who each complete a super-sprint triathlon in the order of female-male-female-male. He recorded the fastest split of the U.S. team that earned the silver medal. In the men's individual race, McDowell placed sixth, the highest-ever finish for a U.S. male triathlete at the Olympic Games.   “It's a huge honor to receive this award after so many great performances on the U.S. men's side, which has been really exciting. This wouldn't have been possible without the entire team behind me, my family, coach Nate Wilson, physio/medical, friends, community, and USA Triathlon,” McDowell said. “It truly takes a village to do what we do and perform at the highest level. Scott is the best US Male Ultra Runner ever.  That may change, but for now, no one can match 7 consecutive wins at the WS100 plus wins at other marquee events. He set the S-N FKT on the fabled Appalachian Trail in 2015, with a desperate effort at the end, eclipsing Jennifer Pharr Davis' time by 3hrs 13mins.  The next year Scott's friend Karl Meltzer lowered it by 9hrs 29mins, then "the Belgian Dentist" Karel Sabbe demolished the overall AT FKT by doing it 41days 7hrs 39mins.   Scott and his wife Jenny co-authored, "North: Finding My Way On The Appalachian Trail" and were the 3rd ever guests on the Fastest Known Podcast.  Karel was actually our 2nd guest ever (take a look and listen - three years ago and these episodes are worth it). Time to catch up! On August 4, Scott went back for another go.  This time with plenty of preparation and knowledge, unlike the first time when he and Jenny "On-sighted it".  How did that go? "I started to feel my left quad on the 4th day. I shifted weight to the right, then that tightened up badly. I tried to slow down and walk it off, but that is not possible on the northern section of the AT." Very disappointing.  Listen as Scott describes his specific training for this effort, as well as nutrition specifics.  He feels that starting in the north, where the terrain is more difficult than in Georgia may have been a factor. "You don't get warm by sticking your head in a furnace." It's still too early to think about this, but we have to ask .... will he go back? "I still have so much to learn, and I still have more to give.” "You had to go and wake the dragon". - Jenny to Scott

Four short highlights from Season One you may have missed or need to hear again. The best 10 minutes from each! Episode 1: Tony Krupicka on the Longs Peak Duathlon (our most listened-to podcast ever). Free-soloing is all about "how you feel". "Sometimes being successful means just getting back to the car. Alive.” Episode 2: Karel Sabbe crushes the FKT on the Appalachian Trail. How did he beat the best ultra-runners in the country by FOUR DAYS? "I learned it was far better to start very early and get the miles done, rather than struggle in late and tired." Episode 10: Heather Anderson is the first women to do the Calendar Triple Crown of Hiking. She once held the Overall Self-Supported FKTs for the AT, the PCT, and the Arizona Trail, simultaneously. "I wanted to relinquish control, let go and let it unfold. It was an area of growth for me.” Episode 13: Jim Walmsley and two friends swim across the Colorado River. The R2R2R.alt has become epic for combining adventure and beauty. "It's really aesthetic, because the Bass is the only trail other than the Kaibab that goes completely from one Rim to the other, with the only catch being, there is no bridge across the River..." This Episode is a tight 45 minutes of the best advice from the best FKTers.

We have a special episode for you this week with one of the members from the UK Backyard Team that took part in the Big Dog's Backyard Ultra - World Championship on the 17th Oct 2020. It was an epic event to be part of the UK came team home finished in 13th place out of 21 when Richie Hinson completed his 39th loop, Johnny Breen came in an amazing 2nd place which shows how much he developed as a competitive ultra runner over the last couple of years. Ed McGroarty and Eoin Keith ensured Ireland finished in 10th place with an pretty impressive 42/41 loops, but the big story in my eyes was this weeks guest Nick Lister who less than 6 years ago weighed in at 19 stone and realised it was time to turn a corner. After completing a couple of Ironmen Nick entered the Castleward backyard and failed his way to completing the magical 100 mile mark during the world championships where he and his team completed against the likes of Courtney Dauwalter, Amelia Boone, Maggie Guterl and lets not forget Karel Sabbe who managed to complete 75 loops which is an astonishing 321.5 miles. This is a great story of growth and perseverance, Nick has really recoloured his life through the world of Ultra Running, a real down to earth guy who just likes putting himself through hell. My favourite piece of this episode is where Nick has his break through during his 500 (524) mile run around the North of Scotland, enjoy....

Kristian Morgan is an ultra-runner, coach and podcast host with his sights set on breaking massive records.  After covering over 1000 miles of the Appalachian Trail last year as part of the support team for Belgian runner Karel Sabbe's FKT, Kristian was intent on taking on the same challenge himself, until Covid scuppered his plans. With the hunger for an epic challenge already in him, and with some close ties to the iconic South West Coast Path here in the UK, Kristian decided he'd make an attempt at breaking Damian Hall's already impressive record. After running an average of 60 miles per day, on around 4 hours sleep a night for a total of 10 days, 12 hours and 6 minutes, Kristian had has record.  In this episode we hear about his earlier adventures and about his experiences running along Britain's beautiful south west coast. Quite a few things happening since we last talked, Karel Sabbe knocked out 75 loops at Big Dogs Backyard Ultra smashing Johan Steene’s record, the Garmin Skyline was cancelled on the weekend and we edge closer and closer towards another total lock down. Luckily the Kerryway Ultra went ahead and our next guest managed to crawl his way to first place after his A race UTMB was cancelled, as amazing as this was I didn’t want to go past his UTMB TDS 31st place from 2019 which was a mind blowing result on one of the most technical races on the world circuit. Numerous accolades to his name such as the Wicklow Way Course Record holder, 2nd fasted Denis Rankin Round, Sub 3 marathoner and Irish Trail Runner. “Sometimes the mind limits us, when in reality we can do a whole lot more than we really believe we can.”-Kristian MorganMany times in life various pieces fall together, often by complete surprise, to create something beautiful. As I always try to tell the stories of people from all aspects of society who are bettering themselves, I was intrigued when Kristian Morgan reached out to me suggesting we chat. Kristian will attempt to break the Appalachian Trail FKT (Fastest Known Time), currently held by Karel Sabbe, on July 1st, 2019. Beyond this attempt, he is an accomplished ultrarunner in his own right, having completed the Tor Des Geants, UTMB, Marathon Des Sables, Rhonda Del Cims, and more. Kristian and I sat down over Skype, using the magic of the internet to chat across an ocean and continent because he is located in London. Kristian and I explored his story with running, how long, tough races like Tor De Geants have shaped him, how to learn from failure, how to apply the lessons we learn from endurance to other aspects of our lives, the benefits of being present, keeping your body healthy, goal setting, fear, and much more.AUM,Jarod ContrerasFind Kristian:kristianultra.comInstagram: @kristianultra instagram.com/kristianultra/Twitter: @kristianultra twitter.com/KristianUltraFacebook: @kristianultra facebook.com/kristianultra/Support Touching the Trail:touchingthetrail.com/donate targetreleaserecovery.comFind Touching the Trail: touchingthetrail.comTouching the Trail Weekly: eepurl.com/bEENNPInstagram: @touchingthetrail instagram.com/touchingthetrailTwitter: @touchthetrail twitter.com/touchthetrailFacebook: Touching the Trail facebook.com/touchingthetrail

Joe 'Stringbean' McConaughy is a young legend in the thru-hiking community. He set the fastest known time (FKT) on the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail.  His Appalachian Trail record was truly astounding because (at the time he finished the trail) his unsupported record was faster than any supported record!  What's the difference between a supported and unsupported thru-hike? Supported thru-hikes have one or more people lending you a hand. These lovely people will typically: Meet you at junctions where the trail meets a road. Give you a food, water, and medical supplies.  Set up and break down your tent. As a result, you don't have to make any detours to go to the post office or to a store to resupply.  More importantly, you can carry little or no food. You may be able to leave your shelter and sleeping bag behind too. You can get by with less water because you know your crew will have plenty at the next road crossing.  On the Appalachian Trail, these trail junctions happen far more often than on the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail. This results in considerably less weight than an unsupported thru-hike (which is what 99% of thru-hikers do). If you do an unsupported thru-hike, you're on your own for everything. Although Karel Sabbe has recently beaten some of McConaughy's speed records, his unsupported Appalachian Trail record still stands. I'll be interviewing Karel Sabbe in 2019, but enjoy McConaughy's remarkable sense of humor and athletic feats. On social media, my username is always ftapon.
