Why do we dream? Is lucid dreaming real? How can dreams be used for therapy? Does cheese really give us nightmares? In this episode, we discuss the neuroscience and psychology of: • REM sleep, and how it puts our brain in the ideal state for creating dreams • Why dreams might be a way for our brains to stop non-visual senses taking over our brains when we sleep • The links between recurring dreams and trauma, and how external stimuli influence the things we dream about We speak with renowned author, dreamworker, and poet Rodger Kamenetz about why, even if lucid dreaming is real, we might not want to interrupt the problem-solving, memory-consolidating work our brains undertake when we dream. And we talk to teacher and psychotherapist Dr. Leslie Ellis about how she incorporates dreams into therapeutic practices, and discuss why dreaming is so difficult to study. Plus: we take a trip through time, exploring all the world-changing inventions, discoveries, and works of art that were inspired by dreams. ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neuroscientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... The last few years have been heaped with uncertainty and tough on our ability to focus. Brain fog, distracted attention and the inability to just sit down and do the thing feel like the new norm. But for some adults, this overwhelming feeling isn't situational. It's brain chemistry.ADHD — a condition we often associate with kids — is being diagnosed in a growing number of adults, who are often both surprised and relieved to find out they have a reason for the lack of focus.Women, in particular, are being diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adulthood because we've learned the way ADHD shows up in girls can be different and less visible than how it shows in up in boys.Listen back to a conversation that MPR News host Angela Davis had earlier this year with a woman who was diagnosed at age 30 with ADHD and a psychiatrist who pioneered treating ADHD in adults with mindfulness techniques. They'll talk about the signs of ADHD in girls and women, how it's diagnosed and some tips to help manage the condition.   If you're looking for ways to understand and manage ADHD, here are a few more resources: ULCA Mindful App, ADDitude magazine, The ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast, short mindfulness videos from Dr. Lidia Zylowska's YouTube channel, MindfulRxADHD and mindfulness community classes from the University of Minnesota's Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing. You can also listen to Refocused, which is a podcast produced by ADHD Online that explores how adults with ADHD can work with their diagnosis, instead of it working against them.Guests:  Dr. Lidia Zylowska is a psychiatrist and associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Medical School. She's the author of “Mindfulness Prescription for Adult ADHD” and “Mindfulness for Adult ADHD:  A Clinician's Guide.”Liz Adams is a neuropsychologist and a woman with ADHD. Nightmares: what's their cause and cure? Our guest is clinician and dream demystifier, Dr. Leslie Ellis. Nightmares seem to be caused by anything upsetting whether in recent life or from long ago. Luckily, we don't need to know what is causing a nightmare to work with it. Dreaming helps us metabolize emotions but nightmares can wake us up, interrupting the process. She describes a dream as a picture of our current or habitual nervous system condition (ala Eugene Gendlin). It can be helpful to rescript the dream or change the ending in an environment where we feel calm and safe. Dr. Ellis describes bias control and aspects of Stephen Porges's polyvagal theory. BIO: Leslie Ellis is author of A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy and offers online dreamwork certification to mental health professionals. Her experiential approach to engaging with dreams is based on focusing, an approach that privileges the body's felt sense in the exploration of dreams. Developed by Eugene Gendlin, a focusing approach includes finding help in a dream and bias control. Leslie has expanded on this method to develop an embodied approach to treating nightmares, and recently published a paper in the journal Dreaming on nightmares and the nervous system.  Find our guest at: DrLeslieEllis.com Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science. There is now a growing body of research showing the efficacy of mindfulness practices where you literally observe and accept your pain, rather than cover it up. It isn't a panacea, but the clinical results are significant enough that mindfulness is now increasingly being integrated into hospital approaches. As an expert in post-trauma functioning, particularly in survivors of sexual violence or mass trauma, clinical psychologist Dr. Laura Wilson brings to light the importance of understanding risk factors associated with multiple forms off victimization and finding the right language to use in the process of treating survivors. On this episode of the Mind Dive Podcast, hosts Dr. Bob Boland and Dr. Kerry Horrell are joined by Dr. Wilson, an Associate Professor of Psychological Science at the University of Mary Washington, to discuss the intricacies of treating sexual assault survivors. “Tailor your intervention approach to the specific needs of the survivor,” said Dr. Wilson, “Each person is going to have a different lived experience and reactions from people in their lives. We must be flexible and pause and think about what this person would benefit from. This can be challenging because it's a different skillset than more manualized treatments.” From a clinician's first reaction to a disclosure to their cultivation of meaningful language and continued introspection into personal feelings around the topic, mental health clinicians must approach treating a survivor of sexual assault with utmost care. As professionals navigate helping their patients through high profile societal conversations about sexual assault, coping mechanisms and more, Dr. Wilson says the most valuable skills to employ are patience and empathy. For further education into this topic, see Dr. Wilson's book with co-author Amie R. Dr. Chris Blazina and I had a fascinating conversation about the psychological role companion animals play in our lives -- especially men's lives -- during this episode of "Why Do Pets Matter?"  Through his work, Chris has found that our pets take on the role of "unwavering friend and constant companion" during our lives. And, this is particularly true for men -- especially later in life -- as their network of friends diminishes. Societal norms can sometimes make it difficult for men to become vulnerable and feel comfortable expressing how vital their pets are to them. Kudos to all the "Macho Men" and their "Teacup Pups"! This gives ample evidence of the emotional intelligence that is cultivated by owning a pet!   About Dr. Chris Blazina Dr. Chris Blazina is a licensed psychologist, retired professor, and award-winning author. He has been in practice for nearly 25 years, focusing on men and their depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief & loss, relationship problems, and pet bereavement. In his work, Chris has found dogs to be an important companion and part of a male's life that cannot be found in the same way as with any human.   Connect With Chris: Website - http://www.chrisblazinaphd.com Twitter - https://twitter.com/DrChrisBlazina   Books: When Man Meets Dog: What a difference a dog makes! on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/When-Man-Meets-Chris-Blazina/dp/1845848799/ Men and Their Dogs: A New Understanding of Man's Best Friend on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Men-Their-Dogs-Understanding-Friend/dp/3319300954/ Clinician's Guide to Treating Companion Animal Issues: Addressing Human-Animal Interaction on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/dp/012812962X The Psychology of the Human-Animal Bond: A Resource for Clinicians and Researchers on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/The-Psychology-Human-Animal-Bond-Researchers/dp/1461461960

Welcome to the Emergent Human with Michael Ostrolenk, where we explore optimizing health, embodied spirituality, and post-conventional living. She is the author of A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy (https://www.amazon.com/Clinicians-Guide-Dream-Therapy-Implementing-ebook/dp/B07S2T5MJ4) and offers many training opportunities in embodied, experiential dreamwork based on her book. Dr. Ellis discusses the value of engaging clients in dream work, as it helps point out salient emotional concerns, helps limit biased conscious editing, provides new perspectives on issues, and can serve as a diagnostic tool. Dreams often pick up on things which affect us during the day, even if we are not consciously aware of it. Dr. Ellis details how one could understand key life events through paying attention to trends in dreams and lends theories on how dreams may be predictive of future events. Gender and sexual minorities face unique concerns and, according to research, are actually more likely to want and seek therapeutic help due to greater levels of psychological distress. But research also shows that many psychologists and therapists do not feel adequately educated or efficacious discussing topics related to sexuality and gender in clinical practice. This interview, cross-posted from the podcast Psychologists Off The Clock, Aisling Curtin and Dr. Matthew Skinta discuss their new book Mindfulness and Acceptance for Gender and Sexual Minorities: A Clinician's Guide (Context Press, 2016), which offers a number of practical strategies within a contextual behavioral science framework, including mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions, compassion-focused therapy (CFT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), relational frame theory (RFT), and more. With chapters on stigma, shame, relationships, and parenting, this book will be a valuable resource for all therapists. If you're a clinician, you understand the ongoing need for cutting-edge, effective approaches for treating a variety of clients. With this guide, you'll learn about the unique application of contextual behavioral approaches as they relate specifically to the experiences of gender and sexual minorities, and feel better equipped to help all of your clients work toward happiness and health. Dr. Leslie Ellis teaches therapists to learn how to explore dreams with their clients. Natural empathy and curiosity can be used by anyone wanting to support a client or a friend with a dream they are curious about. We talked in depth with Leslie on Aug 8, 2020 about nightmares, so we skip the background talk and go right to Leslie's latest dreams and interests. We speak about the power of dream shards (aka snippets) and encourage listeners to record even their smallest dreams. We then shift to somatics and the "felt sense" which is the basis for the famous dreamer's "aha". We talk about Leslie's specialty of trauma therapy; what are the hallmarks of PTSD, and how can dreams mark that the condition is waning? We end with a plea for people to get help with their nightmares especially if they are having suicidal thoughts. BIO: Dr. Leslie Ellis is an author, teacher, speaker and clinical dreamworker. Her recent book, A Clinician's Guide to Dream Therapy (Routledge, 2019) offers therapists a primer in modern, experiential dreamwork methods.
