Trump v. The United States is about presidential immunity — the idea that a president is immune from prosecution for their actions as president even after they leave office. The Supreme Court of the United States is weighing whether or not the president can get away with say…inciting a violent insurrection or conspiring to overturn his own presidential election. Listen to understand why even hearing this case is a gift to the criminally convicted, twice impeached former president, Donald J. Trump, and what it would mean for the Supreme Court to even partially accept his lawyer's argument of “absolute immunity."Glenn Kirschner, former US prosecutor, MSNBC/NBC legal analyst and host of Justice Matters; and Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United and Let America Vote, join Lisa Graves for this episode. Martin Luther KIng III is an historic icon, though his own story still has many more chapters to be written. He was born in 1957, the oldest son of two African-American civil rights activists. Sadly at the age of only 10, he and his three siblings lost their father, when he was murdered in cold blood. His father was only 39 years old when he was killed, and he had known at the time that others wanted him dead. Only the day before his death, our guest's father specifically addressed the growing threats against his life saying, "I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop and I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And he's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over, and I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as people, will get to the promised land. So I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."MLK III was forced to endure the loss of his father. And was raised by his mother in Atlanta. He eventually attended Morehouse College where his father also went. And from there, he went on to make his own contributions to the legacy that his parents sought. He never feared standing up for justice, equity, fairness, and civil rights. He led countless movements, rallies and protests, including when he was arrested in the South African embassy in Washington, DC, is part of a civil disobedience protest against Apartheid and for the release of Nelson Mandela. But his passions are as broad as they are deep. He has led protests against bias in the field of technology. And it's spoken to the United Nations on behalf of individuals living with AIDS. He became the first of his family to attain political office, getting elected to the Fulton County commission. He became the fourth president of the Southern Christian leadership conference. And he founded the nonprofit, Realizing The Dream Inc, where he spearheaded nonviolence education workshops and programs in Bosnia, Herzegovina, India, Israel, and Palestine, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and the United States. He earned the honor of speaking for Barack Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, and also spoke at Michael Jackson's funeral in 2009. Our guest served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Martin Luther king Jr. Center in Atlanta. And he co-founded Bounce TV, the first ever independently owned and operated TV network featuring African Americans. He's also served on the board of advisors of Let America Vote, an organization that fights against voter suppression. He's received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the prestigious Ramakrishna Bajaj Memorial global award for the outstanding contributions he's made to the promotion of human rights and the humanitarian award by the Montreal Black Film Festival. He was even given the honor of presenting the ceremonial coin at Superbowl 40 and throwing out the first pitch at the major league baseball civil rights game. His father famously said, "I have a dream. That my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream today." Today we have the privilege and opportunity to hear from one of those children about his father's dream and much more.

Josh Earnest is the Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer for United Airlines, a position he's held since 2018. In the past, Josh served as the 29th White House press secretary under President Barack Obama, an experience which was extremely formidable for his approach to communications. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of Let America Vote, an organization founded by former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander that aims to end voter suppression. In this discussion with Lippe Taylor Group CEO Paul Dyer, Josh gets into everything from DEI, finding opportunity in a crisis, keeping your cool under extreme pressure, and of course, lessons learned from his time with Obama. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Josh. Hire wartime communications leaders (or become one). When Josh made the pivot in his career from politics (after being Press Secretary to the Obama Administration) to the corporate side, most brand executives he met with questioned whether his political experience would be relevant in their industry. This turned out to be shortsighted. United, who was facing a communications crisis at the time, knew they needed to think differently if they were going to correct course. The combination of Josh's fresh perspective and proven track record of operating rationally under pressure (there's arguably no higher pressure comms job than being a press secretary) turned out to be a killer combination and exactly what United needed. Slow your body, and your brain will follow. Josh's former CEO publicly praised how well he is able to operate under extreme amounts of pressure. Josh attributed this to having both a generally low-key attitude and making a conscious effort to slow his body down when the stakes are high. Slowing the body down, he learned, slows the mind down, allowing you to think rationally and separate the urgent from the important and prioritize accordingly. He cites this as a critical skill for making good decisions in the midst of a crisis. Learn to write. Of the many pieces of advice Josh offers to younger aspiring comms leaders, at the top of his list is learning how to write. Writing is a skill that cannot be replaced by bots, no matter how good their algorithms get, and therefore is a skill that will always be needed in communications. ----- Produced by https://podcastlaunch.pro (Simpler Media)

After nearly a decade in the military, Jason Kander had grown accustomed to the demands of deployment in Afghanistan -- but it was his return to civilian life that presented the biggest challenges for him and his family. Today, Kander talks about life during and after service, the career shift into politics that led him to seek treatment for his PTSD, and the dangers of thinking of trauma as “unearned.” Resources from this episode: If you or a veteran you know are struggling, dial 1-800-273-8255 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. Discussion Prompt: Be Open To Talking Jason Kander says in today’s episode, “everybody's going through this right now together and it's difficult in a lot of different ways. But you’ve just got to be really open to talking to the people in your lives about it, because you can make a big difference in their life just by talking to them about it.” For children under 5: What is the hardest thing about our new routines for you? For children 5-12: It’s important to talk openly about things, especially when they are hard. What is the hardest thing for you about how things have changed since early March when schools closed? For youth 12-18: Have you talked with any friends about the hardest parts of this new reality? What do your friends say is hardest? What is hardest for you? Sometimes talking openly with people about really hard things can help you and them process them better. For the 18+ crowd: What’s a particularly challenging change for you over these last couple months, maybe even something you are working through that you are reluctant to talk about, because it’s naturally hard to talk about such things? Most people lament that government doesn't truly work for the people. Jason Kander (@jasonkander, TW) thinks about this a lot and he believes he's got a good solution. The government needs to reimagine itself as Customer Service. This might include simple solutions like a voting holiday, streamlining practices so that people don't wait on hold for hours or wait months for services, or simply installing sidewalks where they don't exist. Jason Kander gained national attention in 2016 while running for the US Senate in Missouri with a commercial featuring him assembling a rifle while blindfolded. While he didn't win, his platform and character earned him the endorsement of President Barack Obama as the future of the Democratic Party. Since then Kander has gone on to form Let America Vote to end voter suppression, started the podcast Majority 54 on Crooked Media and earlier this year published Outside The Wire. NewDEAL Alumnus Former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, founder of Let America Vote, talks with host Ryan Coonerty.
Jason Kander is an army veteran, former secretary of state for Missouri, and founder of the voting rights advocacy group Let America Vote. In this episode, Daniella and Ed sit down with Kander to discuss his new book, "Outside the Wire: Ten Lessons I've Learned in Everyday Courage," and his position as a progressive in a red state. Daniella breaks down the political ad that brought Jason into the national consciousness—or, at least, into her consciousness—and Ed laments the foregone fate of his beloved Detroit Lions. Finally, our hosts digest Nike's new ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.
Welcome the official start of season two of Majority 54. If you’re new to Majority 54, I’m Jason Kander, the president of Let America Vote: an organization dedicated to making sure that every American gets to vote by creating political consequences for anyone who wants to diminish the most basic American right. And we’re talking to the 54% of American who did not vote for Donald Trump about where we go from here. He's a District Attorney for Nueces County in Texas. He's a proponent of criminal justice reform. He's a self-proclaimed "Mexican biker lawyer covered in tattoos." He's a Dallas Cowboys fan. He's never prosecuted a single case. He's Mark Gonzalez, and he's our guest today. We're going to discuss how law enforcement impacts real people, how sweeping reform needs to come to America, and how District Attorneys can change enforcement on a local level. We hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as we enjoyed discussing Mark's colorful history and bright future. In the first episode of this second season, we talk to someone who has an incredible platform about how he uses it to do good. That man is someone that a couple of you may know: Mr. Lin-Manuel Miranda. The creator of In The Heights and Hamilton discusses making politics entertaining and engaging, as well as how to choose fundraising campaigns to maximum effect. Then, we ask when he's going to run for Secretary of Treasury, since he has more experience than the current Secretary of Treasury. This is just a killer interview and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it. There are only a few days left to support the campaign Lin-Manuel is running, which benefits Let America Vote among other worthwhile organizations. Today we’re talking Voting Rights. In my mind, there is no issue of greater importance in the country right now – and that’s because it affects every other issue. As you may know, I’ve put a good chunk of time into this cause. I spent four years fighting voter suppression as Secretary of State in Missouri and I’ve spent the last year fighting it as the President of Let America Vote, an organization I founded. It’s a broad issue because there are a lot of different pieces to it, so in the second segment of today’s show I’ll go a little deeper than usual. I’ll get into the recent history of voter suppression, the tactics of vote suppressors, and how we fight back – as well as doing what we usually do in segment two: I’ll tell you how to talk about it with friends who don’t yet agree with you. So segment 2 will tackle the issue as a whole, but for today’s conversation with a guest, I wanted to zero in on an aspect of voter suppression I don’t think gets enough attention: disenfranchisement of formerly incarcerated individuals. Desmond Meade is the Founder and President of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, but he’s also impacted directly by this issue, because he in years past he was addicted to drugs and spent some time in prison. He is one of the well over one million U.S. citizens living in Florida with very little hope of ever having their civil rights – including their voting rights – restored. He has a law degree, but he can’t sit for the bar. He’s active in his community and his wife ran for the state legislature, but he can’t vote. But Desmond isn’t discouraged. He’s fighting back and he’s inspiring a lot of people, including me. Jason is one of the youngest people ever to be elected to a statewide office and rose to national fame running as a progressive candidate against Roy Blunt Jr. for US Senate in Missouri in 2016. Outperforming the top of the ticket, Jason's campaign went viral when it released an ad in favor of background checks. Recorded in front of a live audience, the conversation focused on relevant social issues like race and how progressives can win in 2018 and beyond. Many thanks to our partners and sponsors for this event -- Jason Kander, Let American Vote & FilmScene.
Matthew and Toby are joined by special guest Jason Kander. The former Missouri secretary of state, president of Let America Vote, and devout Royals fan discusses everything from his weekly reliving of the 1985 championship, the superstition around his 1981 Ken Brett jersey, his unsolicited twitter beefs with Curt Schilling (link), why he's fighting for voting rights, and the one or two things on which he might agree with Donald Trump. It’s a not-to-be-missed conversation with an upcoming Democratic leader and a truly impressive baseball fan.
Air Date: 08/4/2017 Today we revisit the old idea that if voting mattered they wouldn’t let you do it and the fact that that is exactly what they’re trying to do. Between allowing the chaos and uncertainty caused by hackable and unverifiable voting machines and systematic voter suppression efforts it seems clear just how much they don’t want people to trust or participate in the system Be part of the show!
