Lori Allen and Ajantha Subramanian continue their second series on Violent Majorities. Their previous episode featured Peter Beinart on Zionism as long-distance ethnonationalism; here they speak with Subir Sinha, who teaches at SOAS University of London, comments on Indian and European media, and is a member of a commission of inquiry exploring the 2022 unrest between Hindus and Muslims in Leicester, UK. The catalysts he identifies for the rise of Hindu nationalism (Hindutva) include the emergence of new middle classes after economic liberalization, the rise of Islamophobia after 9/11, the 2008 crisis in capitalism, and the spread of new communications technologies. The trio discuss the growth of Hindutva in the US and UK since the 1990s and its further consolidation. Social media has been key to Modi's brand of authoritarian populism, with simultaneous messaging across national borders producing a globally dispersed audience for Hindutva. Particularly useful to transnational political mobilizations has been the manufacture of wounded Hindu sentiments: a claim to victimhood that draws on the legitimizing language of religious minority rights in the US and UK. They also note more hopeful signs: Dalit and other oppressed caste politics have begun to strengthen in the diaspora; the contradictions between lived Hinduism and Hindutva have become clearer; there are some demographic and structural barriers to Hindutva's further growth in the UK and US. Subir's Recallable Book is Kunal Purohit's H-Pop:The Secretive World of Hindutva Pop Stars (Harper Collins India, 2023), which looks at the proliferation of Hindutva Pop, a genre of music that is made to go viral and whip up mob violence against religious minorities. Mentioned in this episode: Subir Sinha, “Fragile Hegemony: Modi, Social Media, and Competitive Electoral Populism in India.” International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 4158–4180. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or National Volunteer Corps, is the parent organization of the Sangh Parivar, or Hindu nationalist family of organizations. It espouses principles of Hindu unity and aims to transform India into a Hindu supremacist nation-state. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), or World Hindu Organization, is a branch of the Sangh Parivar. Its stated aims are to engage in social service work, construct Hindu temples, and defend Hindus. On the anti-caste discrimination bill in the UK parliament, see David Mosse, Outside Caste? This is the Catch-Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express, and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 24th of December, and here are the headlines:A day after Prime Minister Modi attended Christmas celebrations in Delhi, a senior Orthodox Church Bishop in Kerala criticized the event. Bishop Yuhanon Meletius, Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, shared his thoughts on Facebook, referencing two incidents of disruption at Christmas celebrations in Palakkad schools. He pointed out how bishops are revered and cribs honored at one event, while in Kerala, cribs are destroyed, following incidents involving VHP leaders and ongoing investigations into the disturbances.Telugu actor Allu Arjun appeared before police today, following a notice issued after a stampede at the premiere of Pushpa 2 on December 4. Police are working to establish a timeline of events leading up to the stampede at Sandhya Theatre. Investigators aim to gather detailed information to assist in preparing the chargesheet. Three VHP leaders were arrested in Palakkad in connection with one incident, and authorities are continuing their search for additional suspects.Opposition leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi criticized the selection process for the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). At a recent meeting, they labeled the process "fundamentally flawed" and accused it of being a "pre-determined" exercise. They suggested Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman and Justice Kuttiyil Mathew Joseph as possible candidates. However, V Ramasubramanian, a former Supreme Court judge, was appointed as the NHRC chairperson on Monday, despite their objections.Goa may face a beef shortage as meat vendors went on strike to protest "harassment" after an altercation with members of a cow protection group in Margao. Three vendors were injured during the incident, leading to a shutdown of vendors at the SGPDA market complex. The traders cited safety concerns and called for police protection for beef transporters. The strike is expected to continue, and vendors are demanding the government take action against vigilante groups targeting them.France has formed a new government under Prime Minister François Bayrou, marking the fourth administration of 2024. The appointment follows the collapse of former Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government due to disagreements over budget reforms. Bayrou, leader of the centrist MoDem group allied with President Macron, is tasked with stabilizing the country and passing the 2025 budget. Macron hopes the new government will navigate the political and economic challenges facing France amid ongoing crises. This was the Catch-Up on 3 Things by The Indian Express

Calling Tan France a busy man is an understatement, as the Queer Eye's fashion expert is also an author, designer, TV host, a father of two young kids, and he just completed a major home renovation. Yet, he still seems to have it all together. How does he do it? Tan France joins Michelle to talk about the new Citi Shop desktop browser extension that finds savings for you. Tan divulges some of his savvy tips for keeping his home and family looking their best, while saving time and money. According to the World Bank, climate-related disasters and natural hazards push 26 million people into poverty each year, putting these populations in need of access to technical, financial and institutional resources to be more resilient in responding to climate change. To help address these issues, IBM has committed to invest $45 million in donations of technology and services over the next five years through the Sustainability Accelerator program. . Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM Vice President and Chief Impact Officer, discusses with Michelle more details about the Sustainability Accelerator program and Resilient Cities cohort.  Director of the Veterans History Project, Monica Mohindra talks to Michelle about the Women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion – with the goal of inspiring more women and minorities to contribute their story to the Veterans History Project or VHP. The 6888th collection tells the story of the only all-African American, all-female unit deployed overseas during WWII. The spring season just started and with it, allergy symptoms are already in bloom! But the source of your family's coughing, sneezing and headaches may actually be poor indoor air quality. During National Autoimmune Awareness Month also in March, the organic experts at Natural Home Solutions encourage home and business owners to test their indoor air quality to prevent health issues.  Natural Home Solutions Owner Laura Champagne joins Michelle with some very helpful information on detecting and treating mold in your home and what to ask about mold in your child's school.  Siblings Charlie and Cheryl Young bring their childhood fantasies to life in their new historical fiction novel, Houdini's Last Handcuffs. This book brings the famous magician Harry Houdini to life.  On Halloween, three children—a brother, sister, and their friend—receive an Ouija Board from a family friend. After a séance, the magician Houdini is brought back to life, but not by the séance itself. Houdini needs the children's help to retrieve his notebook of scientific formulas. However, the formula for his return is flawed. Houdini, the family, and many close friends are part of The Inner Circle, a clandestine group using science, math, and physics for mankind's good, as opposed to the Outer Circle, which uses them for evil. The notebook contains the formula that everyone wants.

When the UCI team list was released for the upcoming season, there were many answers to be found about who will be riding what. One inclusion that didn't shed too much like, however, was Aaron Gwin's name under his eponymous racing team. What bikes were they riding? What would this team look like? And will Aaron himself be lining up at World Cups this year or being confined to the commentary box as he rehabilitates from an arm injury sustained early last season? In short, the bikes will be from Crestline, but don't go thinking this is a standard sponsorship deal. It seems to run far deeper, with Aaron taking part ownership in the brand that was founded a mere couple of years ago. Although not their first outing at World Cups, the RS 205 VHP frame was raced under Sam Blenkinsop last year, this does feel like a big step up for a brand that is still so relatively young. Aaron made time for us during a very busy team camp. While it might sometimes seem to be all glitz and glamour in mountain biking, I love the fact that we're still raw enough to sometimes be about propping up a laptop in short-term accommodation as you pack in as much preparation and planning as you can, and answering questions honestly that fans of the sport will likely want to know about. I'm thankful that even as mountain biking becomes more pro the level of access athletes and team owners are prepared to grant media is so great, and it personally only makes me love mountain biking and World Cup racing even more.

Class 12 students of St Joseph School in Ganj Basoda in Vidhisha district of Madhya Pradesh were writing their Maths paper on 6 December. But little did they expect to find their school under attack in the middle of their exam. Based on an allegation about eight students being converted into Christianity in a conversion drive, members of Hindutva groups including the VHP gheraoed the school around noon that day. Video footage from the school show a mob of around 300-500 people chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' and ‘Missionaries Murdabad', outside the school gate. Some miscreants who managed to get inside the school were seen to be pelting stones at the building and vandalising school property. Although it's been a week since the actual incident happen, why we are talking about it now is because unfortunately this kind of an attack against the Christian minority is not a one-off event. It is becoming a grotesque pattern with churches being frequently ransacked across the country and prayer meetings being disrupted by Hindutva mobs on mere suspicions of "forced religious conversions". The dangerous rhetoric around conversions is sometimes also getting abetted by elected governments in states like BJP-ruled Karnataka who are giving credence to such sentiments with anti-conversion law proposals.  But are anti-conversion laws constitutional? Are religious conversions all illegal? Is the freedom to practice one's faith fast diminishing in India?  In this episode, you will hear voices from ground zero – of teachers, parents, VHP leaders – to piece together what really happened at St Joseph's, where these suspicions of forced conversions are stemming from and how are people responding to the allegations. This episode looks at folk poetry, with discussions of four poetry-themed collections in the American Folklife Center. Guest Anne Holmes of the Library of Congress Literary Initiatives Division discusses “Living Nations, Living Words,” the signature project of the Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. Harjo, the first Native American Poet Laureate, has curated a collection of poetry by Native American poets, which includes recordings of the poets reading their work. The recordings are part of the American Folklife Center archive. The Literary Initiatives division has also created a Story Map to place the poets and poems in a geographic context. The poet M.L. Smoker reads her work “The Book of the Missing, Murdered, and Indigenous—Chapter 1.” Guest Michelle Stefano of the American Folklife Center discusses “Rhyming the Archive,” an event in which members of the poetry slam team Split This Rock wrote poems inspired by materials in the archive and performed them at an event at the Library of Congress. The poet Marjan Naderi reads her work “The Lessons My Mother Taught Me While Preparing Dinner.” Guest Kerry Ward of the Veterans History Project introduces VHP and discusses VHP’s November, 2019, Occupational Poetry Panel, which brought together four Veteran poets to perform their work. Meezie Hermansen performs her work “Tools of the Trade.” Stephen Winick and John Fenn discuss a poem in the American Folklife Center’s archive called “Colorado Morton’s Last Ride.” It’s a ten-minute narrative poem recited by a man named Fred Soule at the Farm Security Administration (FSA) camp in Visalia, California on September 2, 1941. The poem was recorded on an instantaneous disc by Charles Todd and Robert Sonkin, two fieldworkers collecting folksongs for the Library of Congress. Winick discusses the research that led him to discover that the poem, whose original title was “Colorado Morton’s Ride,” was written by Pulitzer-Prize-winner Leonard Bacon and Montana cowboy Rivers Browne. He also reveals the identity of Soule, a public information officer for the FSA. We hear Soule read an excerpt of the poem, and Winick and Fenn promise to release the full poem as a bonus episode.

For twenty years, the Vassar-Haiti Project (VHP) has improved the lives of Haitians in the remote mountaintop Haitian village of Chermaitre and its surroundings, raising funds primarily by selling Haitian paintings and crafts. As a result of these efforts, Chermaitre and the surrounding area is served by a 300-student school, a clinic that treats 3,000 patients annually, and clean water, the last from a Rotary Global Grant sponsored by the Poughkeepsie-Arlington Rotary. But with the Covid-19 situation in 2020, an in-person art sale would be too dangerous, so VHP mounted an on-line auction and other virtual events. RadioRotary is helping promote the sale with an interview with Lila Meade, Executive Director of VHP, and two active students from Vassar, Alice Fan and Sam O’Keefe. VHP is partly operated by Vassar’s Rotaract Club and has close connections with 14 Rotary Clubs, District 7210, and The Rotary Foundation. The current efforts include setting up an $86,500 solar-power system to bring much needed electricity to the clinic, for which 14 Rotary Clubs and Rotary District 7210 have contributed $66,000. The Supreme Court delivered two critical judgments on Thursday. However, the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid verdict took precedence over the adultery law in terms of media coverage. Those championing for the construction of Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya are elated. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has declared that the ruling has cleared the blockade and paved the way for a Ram Mandir at the Ram Janmabhoomi. The three-judge Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer – in 2:1 majority judgement – declined to refer the Ayodhya-Ram Janmabhoomi title dispute to a larger Bench. It also refused to reconsider the 1994 Ismail Faruqi judgement that stated mosque was not an integral part of Islam. However, the Apex court also maintained that the 1994 verdict would have no bearing on the present title suit. The SC will start the hearing of the title suit from October 29. Newslaundry spoke to Zafarul Islam Khan, chairperson of Delhi Minorities Commission and Islamic scholar, on the issue. Khan said the SC verdict is not a “setback” for the minority community.“The court has said that 1994 verdict will have no bearing on the present case. It is (the SC verdict) is a welcome move,” he said. “The issue here is the title of the land – whether it belongs to this or that party (Hindus or Muslims). The Supreme Court or any other court should decide (the tittle-ship) case in the light of the law of the land and the Constitution,” Khan said. He said that the no court should decide on issues whether a Mosque, Temple or Church is an integral part of any religion or not.Khan had earlier backed Maulana Salman Nadvi’s proposal that both parties – Hindus and Muslims – should look for out of court settlement.Importantly, he said that the title rights of the disputed structure should go to one party – contrary to the Allahabad High Court verdict in which it divided the land rights between both Hindu and Muslim community. “In the Allahabad HC verdict, the Muslim community was on the losing side. If the land of the 500-year-old structure belongs to the Muslims, why should they give two-third land to the other party.” Khan maintained that he is not in favour division of the land.“Even if you give a part of it (the land) to Muslims, do you think the Muslims will be able to construct a Mosque there? I don’t think so,” Khan told this correspondent. He added the VHP’s celebrations are misplaced. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this NL Hafta, Abhinandan Sekhri, Madhu Trehan, Raman Kirpal, Manisha Pande and Anand Vardhan come together to discuss Asaram’s conviction, Saroj Khan’s statement, Karnataka elections, formation of Bahujan Azad Party, Yashwant Sinha quitting BJP, and more.On the apparent absence of violence after Asaram’s conviction, Madhu said: “I don’t think everything is peaceful. I read the judge had to go into hiring police. I read there’s been a reaction from the followers”. While opining on capital punishment, Madhu also recommended a piece written in Hindustan Times by Ishita Manek on why she doesn’t support the death penalty. Her own experience of being sexually exploited in her childhood made her believe that instead of seeking revenge, she wanted an atmosphere that can help children report the crime and the criminal. Giving his views on the verdict, Anand said, “I am not a supporter of capital punishment in any condition. So this is no exception. But there is a culture of knee-jerk political response to things and this is part of it. It may actually be counter to deterrence. If the punishment for raping and killing is the same, there is an incentive to kill. There is an element of seizing the narrative.”Moreover, Manisha pointed out that since almost 90 per cent of child molesters are people the victims know, the death penalty will naturally make families reluctant to report against the victims. For Raman, “If u really want to deter such offenders, you need to have fast-track courts where nobody will be able to tamper with the evidence.”In other words, as Anand put it, “The certainty of punishment is a better deterrent than the rigor of it.”Moving on to Saroj Khan’s statement on the casting couch in the film industry, Abhinandan and Manisha disagreed on the implications of it. While for Abhinandan, two separate sentences were being joined and misconstrued, Manisha found no justification for such a remark in any circumstance. Madhu added, “I don’t think she should have defended any industry. The action is wrong no matter what.”What was worse, as Manisha said, is that no Bollywood celebrity spoke against it.Further, on the strategic importance of the Karnataka Assembly elections, Anand said, “It would be important only if a spillover effect is factored in: will it set a narrative for the general elections?” For Raman, “The election here is relevant because Karnataka is the only state except Punjab where the Congress rules. It is also a major election in a run-up to 2019.”Abhinandan asks the panel to deliberate on whether the UP-based social media adviser from VHP who turned down the Ola cab because his driver was a Muslim, deserved coverage or not. Raman and Madhu feel such news shouldn’t be covered. She said: “I don't think it deserves coverage because it legitimises it. It’s about one loony person tweeting. There are enough aunties and uncles doing crazy things.” While Manisha thinks it should have been covered, “I would report it like a fun anchor story. I wouldn't block it completely.” Anand calls it a “drawing room communal joke getting its way into social media.”Moving on, the panel discusses the 50 IITians who left their jobs to form a party called Bahujan Azad Party, that aims to uplift the Dalits. In the case of the impeachment issue, Abhinandan feels it got balanced coverage. Abhinandan asks the panel to elaborate on the rationale behind Yashwant Sinha quitting the BJP. To which, Madhu answered: “This is no country for old people. In politics, one has to at some point face reality that if you have become irrelevant or people see you as irrelevant, you don't wait till you are dropped, humiliated and pushed out. You walk away with your head held high.”All this and more on this week’s podcast! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Library's Veterans History Project commemorated Women's History Month with a landmark panel discussion on the contributions of women to the Persian Gulf War and the impact on women veterans in the more than 20 years since. Speaker Biography: One of the first female Navy diving officers, Darlene Iskra was also the first woman to command a ship in the U.S. Navy, the USS Opportune ARS-41, and took it to war during Desert Storm in January 1991. In addition to her experience as a sea-going officer, her staff work has included both enlisted personnel management at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, and civil affairs, disaster and military attache work for USCINCPAC Rep Marianas in Guam and the Marianas Islands. She retired from the U.S. Navy as a Commander in April 2000. Her story is included in the VHP collections and featured in VHP's Voices of War. Speaker Biography: Juliana Mock served in the Persian Gulf War with the US Army, 87th Medical Detachment (Dental Services) and 12th EVAC Hospital. Her unit provided dental support for the Iraqi EPWs at the 301st Military Police Camp. During the months of January, February and March 1991, the unit repeatedly experienced the loud alarms of chemical detectors and ingested expired pyrostigmine bromide tablets. Since the war she and her husband, also a Persian Gulf War veteran, experienced health complications and in 2003 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She is now president of Veterans of Modern Warfare and an advocate for Gulf War veterans health. Speaker Biography: An African-American woman raised in Philadelphia, Gail Shillingford joined the US Army in order to obtain money for college. She was assigned to support of the 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, and deployed to the Persian Gulf for 10 months as a private. She recalls SCUD attacks and other perils in support of the front lines. She remains in the military, currently serving as CW4, GS assistant executive officer to the director of the Army Staff. Speaker Biography: Raised on an Indian Reservation, Juanita Mullen is a pioneer for American Indian women in the US Air Force. She served stateside during the Gulf War in support of troops overseas, watching her husband deploy and caring for her children and family while serving. She was mobilized for deployment but was called back. She retired from the Air Force after 20 years and, after a stint at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, joined the VA Center for Minority Veterans and Center for Women Veterans. She serves as the American Indian veterans liaison for both centers. For captions, transcript, and more information visit http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=5511.
