How sweet it is! While we hope you say that after every episode, this week it's mandatory as we feature Jackie Gleason who ruled over variety television in the 1950s and 60s, as well as inventing iconic characters and sketches that influence pop culture to this day. Originally an MC and nightclub comic, Gleason caught the eyes of network execs who tapped him to host a variety show called The Cavalcade of Stars. The show was later moved from New York to Miami Beach and renamed the Jackie Gleason show, recognizing the star power of the host. It was on that show that Jackie invented his most enduring character, loudmouth bus driver Ralph Kramden who anchored the "Honeymooners" sketches. Not just a comedian, Gleason was a master actor, able to play both comedy and dramatic roles and he earned an Oscar nomination for his role as pool legend Minnesota Fats in The Hustler. He also could do broad comedy as his long run as Sheriff Buford T Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit movies proved. And what about those Saturday nights alone with your lover -- well Jackie had you covered there as well with a string of highly successful "romantic music" albums. It all adds up to a unique and legendary career. As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Gleason? In pop culture Jackie Gleason and Ralph Kramden are joined at the hip. Through sketches on the Jackie Gleason show and a standalone sitcom, The Honeymooners were must see television and inspired another iconic show -- the animated Flintstones. Here is the full bit where Ralph decides he just won't mambo. https://youtu.be/_-FhWB1POWQ?si=sinTj3YRAqY3hbw8 While Ralph Kramden is Jackie's best known character, he had many other gems including sophisticated playboy Reginald Van Gleason who was responsible for delivering his "How Sweet It Is" catchphrase. https://youtu.be/f-aR6IoiN-Q?si=7rfepLuKmvT5fxmI When the part called for broad comedy Jackie could deliver, as in his long run as the blustering Sheriff Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit franchise. https://youtu.be/TjLUPXLPvKo?si=naEK5z7M86ODk8nR

John Herbert Gleason (February 26, 1916 – June 24, 1987) was an American actor, comedian, writer, and composer known affectionately as "The Great One".[1][2][3] He developed a style and characters from growing up in Brooklyn, New York and was known for his brash visual and verbal comedy, exemplified by his city bus driver character Ralph Kramden in the television series The Honeymooners. He also developed The Jackie Gleason Show, which maintained high ratings from the mid-1950s through 1970. The series originated in New York City, but filming moved to Miami Beach, Florida in 1964 after Gleason took up permanent residence there. Among his notable film roles were Minnesota Fats in 1961's The Hustler (co-starring with Paul Newman) and Buford T. Justice in the Smokey and the Bandit series from 1977 to 1983 (co-starring Burt Reynolds). Gleason enjoyed a prominent secondary music career during the 1950s and 1960s, producing a series of best-selling "mood music" albums. His first album Music for Lovers Only still holds the record for the longest stay on the Billboard Top Ten Charts (153 weeks), and his first 10 albums sold over a million copies each.[4] His output spans more than 20 singles, nearly 60 long-playing record albums, and over 40 CDs. Legendary radio & television talk show host and Friar Sally Jessy Raphael talks with Joe Sibilia about how she became a Friar and eventually the Prior of the Friars Club, her duties as Prior, the proposal she received for the Friars Club from Purdue to "roast" one of their chickens, being honored by the Friars Club in 2000, and attending many of the Friars Club roasts. Plus, Sally shares what she used to love ordering on the menu and reminisces about her days working on WIOD in Maimi with Larry King, shooting pool with Jackie Gleason and Minnesota Fats, Tennessee Williams sitting in on her radio show, and hosting Friars Sammy Davis Jr., Carol Burnett, and Jerry Lewis on her television show.
Sean and Brad rack 'em and watch 1961's The Hustler. They get lost in Fast Eddie's eyes, marvel at Minnesota Fats stamina, and reminisce on a billiards game invented by friends in college. After a two-week hiatus...and a hilariously unexpected detour in our attempt to do "The Manchurian Candidate" on this episode, my guest Keir Graff and I pivoted to 'The Color of Money' and I'm so glad we did. This episode features a lot of great stories about the making of the film, and also includes plenty of necessary discussion about 'The Hustler', specifically Piper Laurie, Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, and George C. Scott's performances in that original film, the shared origin of the novels by the prolific, alcoholic, (and ultimately recovered) novelist Walter Tevis, who ALSO wrote the books turned into the film 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' and the Netflix series 'The Queen's Gambit'. We talk about the gentle arc of Newman's life and career, viewed a bit through the lens of recent materials (materials it seems he never intended to make public) that shed light on what he was thinking and feeling during various important moments throughout his life. And we talk about the curious reception that 'The Color of Money' continues to have among cineastes...and we play the famous Siskel & Ebert two thumbs down review of the film upon its release in 1986. Hey, nobody's perfect! But it's funny in retrospect how so many of us at the time missed the undercurrents of connection to the Fast Eddie character in 'The Hustler'...connections Newman made sure that Scorsese and screenwriter Richard Price (who also has a great and brief cameo in the film) laced throughout the script and that he also included in his performance. Newman won his first Academy Award for 'The Color of Money'. LINKS Keir Graff's author website. Fast Eddie Felson is back. A funny Marty Scorcese interview from 1986. In many situations, we might find ourselves with a level of healthy stress - practicing yoga, in the gym, in our professional lives and even in our hobbies. The stress is good for us; it will help us grow. But if we only have stress, the growth can be more difficult than it needs to be. The stress is the yang, the masculine energy. When we find a yin, or feminine energy, that can aid the growth. The yin can be the “spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down”, so to speak. In yoga, we do a stretch and focus our breath and blood-flow into the tendons, relaxing as we are tensing. Or some of our muscles might be very tight in the moment, and the surrounding muscles are completely still. In a pool hall, we might take the same shot over and over, hundreds of times, just like Minnesota Fats in Walter Tevis's The Hustler. Our relaxed, welcoming attitude to the outcome provides a soft cushion for our successes and failures. There, we find comfort in the uncomfortable. You won't find the name Houston Curtis on any poker leaderboards, but for a brief period of time during the height of the boom, he was among the biggest winners in the game. Curtis made his way to Los Angeles by way of Illinois, hoping to make it in the music business. He transitioned to TV production after doing audience warm up for Showtime At The Apollo, later working on shows such as Jerry Springer and The Dating Game, and as an executive at MTV. His Best Of Backyard Wrestling videos in the early 2000s made him a millionaire, and he went on to produce poker strategy videos for Phil Hellmuth, and the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. By chance, Curtis was seated next to SpiderMan star Tobey Maguire one night while playing poker at the Commerce Casino. The two hit it off and became friends, moving their action from the casino to private high-stakes games filled with the Hollywood elite. The games were chronicled in the movie Molly's Game, as well as the book it was based on written by Molly Bloom. But according to Curtis and his book, Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist, it was actually he and Maguire, not Bloom, who ran the game while it was in L.A., taking upwards of $1 million per month from players such as Nelly, David Schwimmer, director Todd Phillips, Don Cheadle, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Pete Sampras, Jon Landau, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Leonardo DiCaprio, before it all came crashing down.Highlights from this interview include shooting music videos in the desert, being "related" to Minnesota Fats, Fortress: Stronghold Of Rock to Mind Over Matter, warming up crowds at Showtime At The Apollo, Jerry Springer and Backyard Wrestling, hiding his sleight-of-hand skills, car washing with Steve Perry, the ultra-competitive and eccentric Tobey Maguire, separating fact from fiction in Molly's Game, The Viper Room, Todd Phillips and Old Spice, $800,000 bluffs at $200-$400, integrity and honesty from Rick Salomon, telling Layne Flack and his bag of cash to go home, Leonardo DiCaprio and his Armani furniture, the disappointing poker skills of Matt Damon, why David Schwimmer is such as Ross, Don Cheadle at the Playboy Mansion, losing seven figures in one night, playing on the set of SpiderMan 3 and in a sex dungeon, a nightmare with Cheech and Chong, hustling a weight loss prop bet, and the sounds of Norm Macdonald.

To get an authentic pool hall feel for his second to last feature The Hustler (he would only make 1964's Lilith before passing away in 1966), director Robert Rossen shot in two actual pool halls in New York City. New York also stood in for other parts of the country --everything from a Pittsburgh bar to a Kentucky mansion was shot in the city. And when his lead Paul Newman couldn't master certain pool trick shots, he cut in the hands of pool technical advisor Willie Mosconi. Though Jackie Gleason's character Minnesota Fats was created by Walter Tevis for the novel on which the movie is based, real life hustler Rudolf Wanderone adopted the persona and insisted that the character was based on him. Your Hot Date hosts discuss the classic 1961 film and it's towering performances from Newman, Gleason, Piper Laurie and George C. Scott. They also give us their thoughts on some recently seen including The Wife, Green Book, Glass, Velvet Buzzsaw, The Prodigy, Cam, BlackkKlansman, Victor Crowley, Russian Doll and the Broadway adaptation of 1976's Network. Episode 64 of the Dynamitegun Dot Com Dot Cast is up! This week I talk to Schnucka ( I think thats how you pronounce it) about his time as a semi-professional Guitar Hero player. That's right, the man racked up over $25,000 in prizes and cash in his spare time by playing Guitar Hero. Learn about his rise to almost fame and his meteoric crash to the ground. We drink some home-brewed beer, talk about successes and failures in life and video games. We then review one of a new category of dog food, with Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Toppers Chunky Duck Bites. And just in case you are interested in watching a truly great film, check out The Hustlerwith Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, with Gleason starring as Minnesota Fats. Marvel at me losing my train of thought like an insane person TWICE in one episode! And by the way, yes, I meant to say Teddy Roosevelt when talking about the Dynamite Gun, not FDR. Just a lil boo-boo. 2:35 Pinkeye4:39 Mr. Beer10:18 Claim to Fame25:15 Haters29:53 First Score45:27 Downhill?47:35 Slipping51:00 The Perfectionist51:55 Contests, Contests, Everywhere53:30 Tough Competition1:01:04 Froggy Bucks1:04:23 Snack Time1:13:50 It's the Gravy!1:14:10 Ratings1:19:30 Drifting

The Clip Machine of Danny Ricker and Adam Fisher is back and keeping your children safer than ever, Patrick Baker brings us less conventional news with Is This A Thing and Matt Blitz continues his travels around Chat Roulette, or, for those not in the know, the worst internet website since late 90's Pets.com competitor Pets.gov.
