Understanding the balance between dynamics and loudness • The truth about LUFS for Spotify – why 83% of users never change loudness normalization settings • What does LUFS stand for? And why it's just one piece of the mastering puzzle • How normalization impacts your music across different streaming platforms • The role of audio normalization in creating a consistent listening experience • Why AI mastering struggles to match the emotional intent of human engineers • Spotify's approach to loudness and what it means for your masters • Internal dynamics – how balancing different sections of your song enhances clarity and impact • The mastering feedback loop – why collaboration between engineers and artists is keyIf you want your music to stand out in today's Spotify-dominated landscape, don't obsess over loudness numbers. Instead, focus on musicality, dynamics, and emotional impact. Test how your tracks sound at normalized streaming levels, and let the music, not the meters, drive your mastering decisions.Links mentioned in this episode:Listen to the Mastering Show PodcastMastering Engineer Reacts to 8 Pro Mixes of the Same SongHigher LUFS - do they REALLY always sound louder?YouTube ruined all my videos - UNLESS you disable this setting...Loudness Penalty: AnalyzePerception AB Support the showBook a FREE 20-minute Producer Potential Discovery Call Follow Marc Matthews' Socials:Instagram | YouTube | Synth Music Mastering Thanks for listening!!

Gmail knows your inbox is overflowing with subscriptions and is trying to help So it wants to help. It seems they're testing a new feature which adds a "Manage Subscriptions" area. There you will be able to see who is sending you the most emails per quarter. Marketing folks get ready... early screenshots show you'll be able to see who sends you less than 10, 10-20 and 20+ emails per quarter. It's estimated that Google blocks nearly 15 billion undesired emails daily. You can see why they want to deter folks from sending things that they'll filter out anyway! They already have the one-click unsubscribe feature which is brilliant. They've also recently started requiring companies who are "bulk senders" —who send more than 5000 emails a day— to adhere to new requirements proving they own the domain they're sending from and that the email being delivered has been authorized to be sent by the service sending it. Yet another product goes to Google's graveyard Google One VPN is now dead. Google Podcasts was also killed a few weeks ago. Spotify will let creators manipulate songs According to WSJ, Spotify is developing tools that would allow users to “speed up, mash-up, and otherwise edit” songs, and save them for listening. Some TikTok creators have made pitching up or speeding up songs part of their signature look. The idea is that if you do the editing on Spotify, Spotify knows about it, and can make sure the artists get their appropriate royalties. On TikTok these remixes become "original audio" of the creator and it's unclear if the money makes its way back to where it should. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, we talk to Aravindan Joseph Benjamin and Kai Siedenburg (University of Oldenburg) about their recent article, which explores how various spectrum- and level-based mixing transforms might be altered to cater to listeners with different hearing abilities.Associated paper: Aravindan Joseph Benjamin and Kai Siedenburg. It's unusual for an album to be conceived and captured in a single week, with every song included in the exact same order in which they were created. But that's exactly what happened when East Forest and Peter Broderick gathered in a small house in the west of Ireland to write and record music together in April 2022. The album "Burren" is out on Bright Antenna Records on March 17, 2023.Having never met in person before, there was only one precondition: no musical plan — to be fully open to the ancient rocky hillside landscape in County Clare known as "The Burren". Maybe it was the micro-dosing of the wild foraged fungi, or the drinking of pristine waters from an ancient spring just outside — but for both artists the time together felt precious and magical. Along with the deep green glades spanning to the ocean dotted with sheep, endless birds, fierce winds and majestic Hawthorn trees, the goal was to let the landscape speak through the music. A cascade of songs and improvised music emerged — all revolving around a host of acoustic instruments: piano, guitar, violin, intimate vocals and percussion, along with subtle electronic sounds and extensive field recordings from the local surroundings. The resulting 12-song suite is vastly diverse, from folk songs to ambient soundscapes, from sprawling improvisations to concise compositions, all presented in the order in which the pieces emerged over the course of the week.OUT ON MARCH 17TH! The Skip Bravery Band discusses the title track from their recently released album.
"Headwaters" is a 48 minute new album that pushes the boundaries of concert and ceremony. The music was recorded and improvised live in front of a small group of friends and locals in my adopted home of Boulder Utah — one of the most remote geographies of America. On the mountainside of Boulder mountain at a friend's ranch sat a beautiful C. Bechstein grand piano that inspired me to create. I invited a few friends to the ranch to see where the piano could take us. Lying on the ground, everyone settled in for a deep internal dive and I opened myself up to the open sonic landscape. I was incredibly nervous — with no plan or history with this particular piano, I felt I might completely fall on my face. But amidst the terror lay a flicker of inspiration calling me to play the first note, and to listen to see where it would lead next. With an adjacent keyboard setup, I created analog synthesizer pads with field recordings to establish beds to ground each improvisation. Not entirely ambient, minimalist synthesis, or only contemporary classical, the ethereal music just flowed out like water, as if springing from the very name of the ranch, “Headwaters."As the sun went down, and with the sounds of birds and wind wafting into the microphones surrounding the piano, the music settled just as it had arrived, gently and gracefully.HEADWATERS LISTEN: Spotify / Apple / Bandcamp_____________________________________TICKETS LIVE - EASTFOREST.ORG/TOUR"CEREMONY TOUR"11.11 San Francisco, CA11.12 Santa Cruz, CA11.13 Los Angeles, CA11.15 Las Vegas, CA11.16 San Diego, CA11.17 Phoenix, AZ11.19 Santa Fe, AZ11.20 Austin, TX Join the COMMUNITY - sign up at EastForest.orgPlease support the show by joining our East Forest COUNCIL on Patreon. This week's song takes a long journey and changes quite a bit as it progresses, much like the protagonist of the story it tells; it's a touching tale with big feels, and should prove to be an important addition to Brad's catalog of work. This is a big one BSrs, definitely the longest an episode has been worked on to this point. This an older song by Brad that goes through a total rewrite and re-record, a true demo to done adventure! You can now support us on Patreon and gain access to our second podcast called What We're Listening To. Where ever we are in life there is a song that speaks to our soul. Just been through a bad break up? There's a song for that. Knocking out a hard workout? There's a song for that. On a road trip with your best friend? There's a song for that. In this episode learn how to bring this magic to the masses by learning about the art of DJing, music mixing, and production with Erica Billings, a.k.a. Sunnee. Hello everyone, and welcome to our big season one review episode! We are so proud of the work we put into this podcast this past year, and can't wait to get back to bringing you regularly scheduled episodes for season two and beyond. Thank you so very much to each and every one of you for listening and helping us to build our community of BSrs! In this episode we're going around the table to give our top 5 lists of favorite songs from season one. Our original plan was to have listener guests on this show, but our recording session went longer (and better) than expected, so we will be bringing you "BS'n with BSrs" next month, along with our season two theme song discussion and reveal. If you were to jump in the time machine with Uncle Dave and travel back to episode 25, You'd hear us lay out plans for what we're calling "Ingredient Songs", which means we pulled a bunch of song element options from a hat (e.g. theme, tempo, mood, instrumentation) and had to use them to create a new song. This is the second installment from the results of that idea. Recipe: I've Got Great Love For YouMake sure you're a little angry before attempting this recipe, but also make sure you are prepared to end up sweet. Pound out some pre-prepared dough to a tempo of 135, then spread thin onto a baking sheet. Spoon in a generous amount of nostalgia laden fuzzed guitar and coat the entire doughy area. Take two fists full of straight up high school bullying, and then sprinkle with hindsight and growth. Bake at 375 for about 20 years, and let cool in the bathtub for 20 minutes. Welcome back BSrs, and hello to anyone new! This week we listen to a new track by our very own Bradley J, and this one is an excellent example of why we started this project, and what we intended for it to do. Why? Because this song greatly benefits from critical feedback and the collaborative process. This one goes from day to night, errr, night to day....not really sure how that works, guess it depends if you're a morning person or a night owl, but either way, this song changed for the better!Send us a message! bs@belongingsongs.comVisit our website! www.belongingsongs.comThere you can listen to the before and after versions of all our songs.Check out our Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/belongingsongs/Follow us throughout the week for your latest BS news. Welcome back BSrs! This week we listen to and talk about 5 tracks off of Wade's first solo album "Better This Way". These "look back" episodes are a fun way for us to revisit some of our past work and to examine how we've evolved as artists over the years. This era of songwriting was also when we were actively playing our music out live, and listening to these songs now brings some of those memories out for us to share with you. Welcome back BSrs! This week we visit another of Brad's songs that was recorded as part of a group a few years back. It's looking very much like these songs will end up together in the form of an EP, and it's becoming evident that the revision process for all these songs are developing a pattern: heavy edits to the arrangement to condense the song into a more compact and listenable product. Tune in to hear this song go under the knife and to hear the results of us cutting the fat from this recording. This weeks song was born of quarantine. The arc of this episode takes us from when the song was written during the first days of pandemic lockdown, through to it's revision process just days after the Murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis by police. The world is a fucking mess, and this song reflects some of that. Victor talks with the mulit-talented and much respected, Moogie Canazio. Antonio "Moogie" Canazio is a Brazilian recording engineer, mixing engineer and record producer known for his work with Antônio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, João Gilberto, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan and Luis Miguel. He has won two Grammy Awards, five Latin Grammy Awards, and two Midsouth Emmy Awards.
We're traveling way back in time with this one, nearly twenty years, to when Brad originally recorded this week's song. We're going to sneak into his house, steal the cassette tape out of his 4-track recorder, then blast back here to the present so he can do a total re-record. The results are quite drastic, and the theme of the song lends an interesting view of the shift in perspective the author undergoes between the two snapshots in time. Buckle up BS'rs, we're heading to court. Yep, we're jumping in the ol' time machine again and visiting the year 1985 to sit in on the Senate hearing instigated by The Parents Music Resource Center that culminated in letting every kid know exactly which album they wanted to buy because of the resultant "Parental Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" rating system. The theme of this week's song relies heavily on the idea that some people just think they know better than everyone else what is good for not only themselves, but the rest of us too. This week, an older song by Brad gets wrestled with. The recording is simple, and raw, and the boys learn that it can sometimes be rather difficult to deal with a stripped down song. When should you try to improve things, and when should they be left alone? We ask these questions, and more, as we attempt to maintain the captured vibe of this track, while at the same time improving on the overall quality of the recording. This week's episode features a song by our host Wade, and is all about having to do things most people love, but he doesn't. Welcome back BS'rs! This week Brad brings us a demo, but there's a catch; the original files have been lost to time, so he has to completely re-record the song from scratch, which makes for a super fun demo-to-done comparison. Please join us as he takes us through the process of trying to recapture the vibe of the original, while, at the same time, improving on the overall quality of the recording.
