Welcome to Mysteries to Die ForI am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrops for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 9, missing person is the featured crime. This is The Florida Man Cometh by Jim WinterThis week's story come to us from Jim Winter, author of the Holland Bay series, which includes Holland Bay and The Dogs of Beaumont Heights. Like his series, this story takes place in what he calls “the Celloverse,” set in and around the fictional City of Monticello. DELIBERATIONTeasdale's early morning response to an abandoned school bus has turned into a scavenger hunt for a Florida man gone AWOL. Which one of the three party animals is missing Florida man James Floren? Trashcan Man, who is now unnaturally baldUnicorn Man, who bounced his head off at least one windshieldPacer Man, who managed to get a car stuck on a roller coasterHere are the facts as Teasdale sees them:A school bus and driver were borrowed from the school district by Mayor Nate Keller for a fishing party on Saturday. To Keller's knowledge the bus was returned with a full tank of gas. The school bus wasn't returned to the school district but left on Rufus King's lawn. The driver, Charlie Tobin, is missing.Searching the bus, Teasdale discovered a stack of neatly folded clothes on the driver's seat and an annoyed alligator chained in the aisle. Before being abandoned, the bus was parked at The Waffle House. The manager said a drunk Larry Molnek, a sales manager for a local car dealer, came in with a man he didn't know. The manager tossed Molnek out for fighting. Either Molnek or the stranger head butted a windshield before leaving in the bus.Teasdale and Deputy Swenson received a BOLO Florida Man James Floren. The recently AWOL husband has family in Ohio, including now respected attorney Joe Reese. As teens, Floren and Reese were busted for breaking into the amusement park to climb the B-52 coaster.Inside the closed amusement park, Teasdale and Swenson discovered a naked man in a trash can. He was pale, white, and newly bald. Next, they found a man trapped in a Pacer stuck on the B-52 coaster. He was pale beneath his tan complexion. -Lastly, Swenson discovered a man in one of the bathrooms. He had a bloody, black-and-blue bump in the middle of his forehead. Which is the Florida Man cometh? About Missing PersonsSince 1975, the FBI has maintained the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) missing person and unidentified person statistics. According the 2023 statistics report, the files are retained indefinitely until the person is located or the record is cancelled by the entering agency.     Slam the Gavel podcast welcomes Danielle Sather Miller to the Podcast. So glad to have met her on TikTok. Danielle has been a victim of Parental Alienation and hasn't seen her boys in the last 8 years and that was when they were 4, 6 and 8. They are now at the ages of 13, 15 and 17 years of age and Danielle misses them and wonders if they think of her. What happened to Danielle can happen to ANYONE.    Five years ago, the Stepmother "allowed" her sons to talk to their mother on a video chat because she had a spat with her husband (Danielle's ex). They were allowed to talk until her ex husband came home and ended the call.    Her boys were kidnapped twice and in 2011 she was also ran over once and dragged 50 feet and this is on her ex-husband's criminal record. There was custodial interference going on as well but law enforcement told her, "it's a civil matter." Her ex even had her mentally committed based on a lie that Danielle was on drugs, but she was released in three hours, but her ex was on his way to CA with her children. She didn't see them for 4 months. He was on the NCIC as the abductor. West Virginia dropped the ball with Custodial Interference, stating it was, "a civil matter."     Danielle is $48,000.00 in debt, and her mother had to sell her home so Danielle could hold on to her parental rights. Danielle mentioned that she did have one good judge, Judge Spruill, but then she would have a new judge every year for the next 7 years of their lives.       Danielle explained how her ex obtained custody of her boys. Over the stress of court, Danielle turned to drug usage and wasn't able to get her children to the weekend visits due to car issues, but she cleaned up her act. She  has been clean for over 8+ years. Danielle has passed ALL drug tests and hair follicle tests while traveling from West Virginia to Horry County, South Carolina once a month for counseling sessions.  When Danielle followed through with everything, that's when her ex refused to follow the counselor's orders and decided that Danielle would not be a part of the kid's lives.      That's when the ex ramped up Custodial Interference and has been arrested twice and feels that the law does not apply to him, yet the children remain with him. Danielle doesn't feel that what she has done is deserving of her punishment and keeping her from her children and what she is going through now. The Stepmother however, had been arrested for having Opiates and THC in her system after giving birth. But Danielle's sons still remain in the home. Grizzly On The Hunt - Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Cryptids, Paranormal, Aliens, UFO's and More!

Grizzly's Paranormal and True Crimes With Ginette Lucas! Many people go missing every year, with the U.S. reporting the highest number. According to the NCIC, 521,705 were reported missing in 2021. Although this is the lowest number of missing persons recorded in U.S. history, it's pretty substantial compared to other countries worldwide. A large percentage of missing persons includes children who go missing through kidnapping. According to Child Find of America, 2,300 children are reported missing every day in the U.S. Here's a detailed overview of missing persons statistics by country. According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons (NamUS) database, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, more than 600,000 people go missing annually. Approximately 4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered each year. Nationwide, there are roughly 6.5 missing persons for every 100,000 people. Luckily, the vast majority of missing persons cases are quickly resolved. For example, in 2021, 521,705 missing person cases were reported, more than 485,000 of which were resolved within the year. The number of missing person cases has steadily declined since 1997, when nearly a million people were reported missing. In the past few two decades communication has made it easier to keep in touch with and track persons, allowing missing person reports to fall by over 40%. Still, more than 20,000 missing person cases and 14,000 unidentified body cases remain open. In absolute terms, California has the largest number of missing persons at 3,010. However, California's rate of missing persons is roughly average, at 7.6 missing for every 100,000 people. The highest rate of missing persons by far is in sparsely populated Alaska, with 163 missing people per 100,000 of the population— far beyond any other state. The state with the lowest rate of missing persons is Massachusetts, at 2.3 missing persons per 100,000, while tiny Rhode Island has the smallest number of missing persons in absolute terms, at 29. Here are the 10 states with the most missing persons: California - 2,133 Florida - 1,252 Texas - 1,246 Arizona - 915 Washington - 643 New York - 606 Michigan - 556 Oregon - 432 Pennsylvania - 401 Tennessee - 361 Most Missing California (2,133) Least Missing Rhode Island (20) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

The Search & Seizure Show
Can you run a gun's serial number during a traffic stop?

The following is a computer-generated transcription, some grammar and spelling errors may be inherent Hey guys, it's Anthony Bandiero, here with blue to gold law enforcement training, and just outside of Cleveland, Ohio. And today's question is, can you run the serial number of a firearm that you are holding during a traffic stop? And the answer is most likely, but there are some caveats I want to go over. So first of all, we do know that if you are lawfully seizing a gun, for example, during a pat-down during a traffic stop, even if some is lawfully concealed carry, and you want to seize that gun during the traffic stop for your safety. Well, that certainly is going to be upheld. That's pretty clear. And then when you have the firearm, normally the firearms serial number is in plain view, you can just look at it. And that's not going to be a search under the Fourth Amendment right to be right to see, that's plain view. But what happens when you are running the gun, and the gun itself has nothing to do with the traffic stop, you know, it's just a safety issue. For example, the traffic stop is for speeding feller to maintain lane and so forth. The next legal question that we have to address is, does the running the gun extend the traffic stop? Because if it does, it could be prohibited under Rodriguez. So let's go through if you're running the firearm, and the serial number is is offered along with the suspects or the driver's license information, so forth, and dispatches gives you all that at one time, that's not usually gonna be an issue because it didn't extend the stop. It's part of the other things that you did it did not measurably extend the stop. So that's that's the first issue benefit. But if it does extend itself, let's say for example, dispatch tells you, hey, look, NCIC has taken a while to get back on this gun. And everything else is, is completed on the traffic stop, and you just waiting, there is an argument that that unrelated investigation is extended stop. And if something is found as a result of that, it's the fruit of the poisonous tree. So keep that in mind, I think courts are going to bend over backwards to give you the tools you need to, to find stolen firearms and so forth. But just keep that in the back your mind at some, at some point it can become extended, it could extend the stop. The next issue is what if the if the serial number is hidden from plain view. So for example, if there's a Hogue grip on the grip, and that certain number is, is underneath those I know, some Rugers have their serial number plates there. And you have to actually remove a grip or you have to remove a firearm part, you know, part of the furniture of the firearm and so forth. That is not playing view, right, that is a search under the Fourth Amendment. And I recommend that if you're going to do that, and be that and be intrusive on the person's firearm, have some reason to give to the court why you believed that run the firearm was reasonable...

Running Criminal History Check II

In this archive episode, Dennis explains when it is okay to run criminal history checks. Recorded on 07/02/2018. US v Finke 1996 - https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=9193536753118804005&q=finke&hl=en&as_sdt=3%2C31&fbclid=IwAR1ap0l0HNCB-IOb7_xr6eN7Ke9svoYa9iqYgUIDQ5DD__eC03xBkAXzIi4 (https://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=9193536753118804005&q=finke&hl=en&as_sdt=3,31) We do not believe that Finke's Fourth Amendment rights were infringed when Delmore decided to wait five minutes for the results of the criminal history check he had requested. We note that there is little authority addressing when and under what circumstances a criminal history check is permissible during a routine traffic stop. Recently, the Tenth Circuit indicated that for officer safety reasons such a check would be an unobjectionable part of every routine traffic stop: [Criminal history] checks are run largely to protect the officer. Considering the tragedy of the many officers who are shot during routine traffic stops each year, the almost simultaneous computer check of a person's criminal record, along with his or her license and registration, is reasonable and hardly intrusive. United States v. McRae, 81 F.3d 1528, n. 6 (10th Cir.1996). Other cases demonstrate an implied acceptance of criminal history checks as generally reasonable, by beginning their unconstitutional detention analysis only after the point at which a criminal history report has been obtained. For example, in Crain, 33 F.3d at 483, the Fifth Circuit held that it was not an unreasonable or illegal detention to question the driver and passengers of a car about matters unrelated to the traffic stop while the officers were waiting for the results of a computer check, including a criminal history search. This, of course, assumes that it was reasonable to ask for the criminal history check and to extend the detention until it was received. See also United States v. Sandoval, 29 F.3d 537, 538, 542-43 (10th Cir.1994) (finding criminal history report of drug arrest, standing alone, insufficient to extend traffic stop, but not questioning NCIC[2] request producing criminal record); McManus, 70 F.3d at 993 (approvingly noting use of NCIC criminal history check in routine traffic stops to support using of same check in VIN identification investigation). 1280 *1280 Thus there is some support for the argument that requesting a criminal history check is a reasonable, constitutional part of all or most traffic stops. We find such a bright line rule troubling, however, because often criminal history checks take longer to process than the usual license and warrant requests, and after a certain point meaningful additional time could, we believe, constitute an unreasonable detention of the average traveller. Unless technology permits criminal record requests to be conducted reasonably contemporaneously with the license and warrant checks normally solicited, we are reluctant to say such checks are always reasonable or justified in the average traffic stop. To decide this case, however, we need not adopt or reject any talismanic rule regarding the propriety of criminal history checks during routine traffic detentions, as it quickly became clear to Officer Delmore that this was not an average stop. Delmore was immediately confronted with suspicious behavior and circumstances — conduct consistent with drug trafficking. By the time Officer Delmore called in the criminal history check, we believe he had sufficient reasonable and articulable suspicions of drug courier activity to justify a speedy, unintrusive criminal record inquiry in addition to a warrant and license check. See Rivera, 906 F.2d at 322 (reasonable suspicions warranted limited questioning outside the scope of traffic related investigation); United States v. Barahona, 990 F.2d 412, 416 (8th Cir.1993) (if circumstances "give rise to suspicions unrelated to the traffic offense, an officer may...

In this archive episode, Dennis revisits the case law of State v. Sloane (2008). Recorded on 03/05/2018. State V. Sloane (2008) - https://streetcoptraining.com/original-caselaw/nj-v-slone-2008/?fbclid=IwAR1fU1xdUaHMRIItmB0kA3Z9-fAxAec62BSXWxz5mjBKohmPLFHEE1QtU10 (https://streetcoptraining.com/original.../nj-v-slone-2008/) We hold that at the time of the stop, the passenger, like the driver, was seized under the federal and state constitutions. We also hold that police do not need reasonable suspicion before they may access the NCIC database. Because the decision to check the NCIC database was within the scope of the traffic stop and did not unreasonably prolong the stop, there was no basis to suppress the evidence found. We therefore reverse the judgment of the Appellate Division and reinstate defendant's conviction and sentence. All of those reasons lead to the conclusion that when a police officer conducts a traffic stop of a private vehicle, the passenger as well as the driver are seized under both the federal and state constitutions. That holding is consistent with the majority of state court rulings on the issue. See State v. Bowers, 334 Ark. 447, 976 S.W.2d 379, 380-82 (1998); State v. Haworth, 106 Idaho 405, 679 P.2d 1123, 1124 (1984); People v. Bunch, 207 Ill.2d 7, 277 Ill.Dec. 658, 796 N.E.2d 1024, 1029 (2003), cert. denied, 541 U.S. 959, 124 S.Ct. 1712, 158 L.Ed.2d 399 (2004); State v. Eis, 348 N.W.2d 224, 226 (Iowa 1984); State v. Hodges, 252 Kan. 989, 851 P.2d 352, 361-362 (1993); State v. Carter, 69 Ohio St.3d 57, 630 N.E.2d 355, 360 (1994) (per curiam); State v. Harris, 206 Wis.2d 243, 557 N.W.2d 245, 251 (1996); see also Hickman, supra, 335 N.J.Super. at 634, 763 A.2d 330. But see People v. Jackson, 39 P.3d 1174, 1184-86 (Colo.2002) (en banc); State v. Mendez, 137 Wash.2d 208, 970 P.2d 722, 729 (1999) (en banc). *801 Applying that standard, Sloane was seized at the time of the traffic stop. When Officer Muzyka ordered Moore to stop her vehicle on the suspicion that she was driving with a suspended license, Sloane's travel was curtailed. Sloane then got out of the car, and the officer promptly ordered him to return to it. Sloane complied. Apart from what any reasonable person might have thought, Sloane was, in fact, not free to leave. Although he was a passenger and not the driver, he was temporarily “seized.” When Sloane and Moore jumped out of the car and approached the officer, he ordered them back into the car. The officer's concerns for his own safety justified that reasonable command. See State v. Diloreto, 180 N.J. 264, 276, 850 A.2d 1226 (2004); People v. Castellon, 76 Cal.App.4th 1369, 91 Cal.Rptr.2d 204, 207-08 (1999), review denied, No. S085514, 2000 Cal. Lexis 3298 (Mar. 29, 2000). Likewise, after Sloane asked for the keys to the car, it was reasonable for the officer to ask Sloane for identification to insure that the car would be driven by a properly licensed driver. See State v. Pegeese, 351 N.J.Super. 25, 31-32, 796 A.2d 934 (App.Div.2002); Hickman, supra, 335 N.J.Super. at 635, 763 A.2d 330. Up to this point, we find nothing inappropriate in the conduct of the police. We turn next to whether the check of the NCIC database violated Sloane's constitutional right. There is no “`litmus paper test'” for determining whether “`a seizure exceeds the bounds of an investigative stop.'” Dickey, supra, 152 N.J. at 476, 706 A.2d 180 (quoting Florida v. Royer, 460 U.S. 491, 506, 103 S.Ct. 1319, 1329, 75 L.Ed.2d 229, 242 (1983) (plurality opinion)). “[C]ommon sense and ordinary human experience must govern over rigid criteria.” Id. at 477, 706 A.2d 180. In addition, police conduct during a traffic stop must be evaluated “within the context of unfolding events.” Diloreto, supra, 180 N.J. at 277, 850 A.2d 1226.

In this archive episode, Dennis answers some group questions regarding K9 units and motor vehicle delays. Recorded on 10/13/2017. Illinois v Caballes (2005) US Supreme Court As found by the trial judge prior to the appeal, the dog sniff was sufficiently reliable to establish probable cause to conduct a full-blown search of the trunk. Caballes is the same as (2017) State v. Mark Dunbar (A-94-15; 077839) The Court adopts the federal standard barring unnecessary delays for the purpose of canine sniffs. Officers do not need reasonable suspicion of a drug offense provided that the canine sniff does not prolong the stop beyond the time required to complete the stop's mission. United States v Pierce (2010)- The United States Supreme Court has consistently held “That an exterior canine sniff of a car during a lawful traffic stop does not amount to a search under the 4th Amendment. It is also well established that, looking at the totality of the circumstances, a dog's positive alert while sniffing the exterior of the car provides an officer with probable cause.” Illinois v. Caballes - Amicus (Merits) | OSG | Department of Justice State v Sloan 2008 - Leaving a vehicle to be driven by a passenger or a third party allows you the right to check their driving credentials. (Criminal Wants / Warrants) This also allowed police officers to run warrant checks of passengers without Reasonable Suspicion. The police do not need a reasonable suspicion before they access the NCIC database. An NCIC check by the police is not a search under the federal or state constitutions. HELD: During a motor vehicle stop, the passenger, like the driver, is seized under the federal and state constitutions. Police do not need reasonable suspicion before they may access the NCIC database and, because accessing the NCIC database was within the scope of the traffic stop and did not unreasonably prolong the stop, there was no basis to suppress the evidence found. State of NJ v. Patino (1980) – “The discovery of a small amount of marijuana in the passenger compartment gave rise only to an inference that the occupants were casual users, and this furnished no cause to search the trunk where large “Dealer Sized” quantities of drugs would presumably be stored. “In the absence of other circumstances that suggest participation in drug trafficking or possession of more contraband” such a search could not expand beyond the persons of the occupants or the passenger compartment of the car.” State v. Patino :: 1980 :: Supreme Court of New Jersey Decisions :: New Jersey Case Law :: New Jersey Law :: U.S. Law :: Justia Trooper pulls over vehicle and spots plastic bag protruding from under the floor mat containing a 4.6 ounce chunk of a white powdery substance later testing positive for cocaine (Plain View) Both are arrested, read miranda, and agreed to speak, co-defendants lips were quivering when asked about the bag in the trunk and responded that he did not know what the contents were. (364 Plastic Vials used for packaging found) Court said – “These are the very types of circumstances that the Patino court referred to, as providing probable cause to search the entire vehicle including the trunk and the interior of the paper bags in the trunk. Allows an officer, after discovery of contraband, to question a defendant after having read them their Miranda rights. State v. Letman :: 1989 :: New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division - Published Opinions Decisions :: New Jersey Case Law :: New Jersey Law :: U.S. Law :: Justia State v Guerra 1983 The troopers lawfully stopped the vehicle. They then detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle. Thus they had probable cause to search the trunk for evidence of contraband. The packages found in the trunk were validly searched. Regardless of the visibility of their contents, the size of the packages and the odor of marijuana that they emitted clearly suggested that they contained...

On this episode of Noisy Balls, I had the honour of speaking with Cricket Australia Diversity And Inclusion Specialist Aaron Dragwidge. Aaron has been one of the driving forces behind Cricket Australia's Sport For All initiative and, in particular, their rapidly growing disability inclusion programs.  He is transforming Cricket's approach to the inclusion of people with disability and has a passion for inclusion and human rights. Aaron has always been exceedingly passionate about inclusiveness for all disabled cricketers. “The National Cricket Inclusion Championships (NCIC) came about because we had three groups of cricketers with disabilities. Blind and low vision had national championships every two years, the Deaf and hard of hearing cricketers every four years, and cricketers with an intellectual disability didn't have an opportunity. So, we brought it all under the one umbrella as a great celebration of cricket”. Having been involved with putting together the NCIC championships, Aaron states “This is about celebrating ability and talent in cricket. Lots of people walk past the games and ask, “what's this game?”, so it's really fantastic to be part of that and seeing the impact that has in a broader sense in the community”. Aaron believes that it's really important to have sports at a national level to be inclusive. The impact that this has had on a number of players has been really huge. In a lot of cases it's changed their lives and has allowed them to participate locally, nationally, and internationally. Aaron wants to ensure that our great game keeps continuing to grow. “Anyone who is keen to get involved in cricket, no matter what your ability is, you should contact your local cricket club or go on to the PlayCricket website, And if you're interested in being involved in the National Cricket Inclusion Championships, jump on to the National Cricket Inclusion Championships website". I thank Aaron for joining me on this episode and for always being so accommodating with his time and I know that with all of his hard work and passion for disabled cricket, our game is definitely in very good hands for many years to come. Noisy Balls is proudly sponsored by the Victorian Blind Cricket Association and we appreciate the VBCA's support as we bring in a new dawn in blind cricket podcasting.   To Get In Touch with Noisy Balls: Shoot us an email to feedback@noisyballs.com and we will always respond and read your messages up on an upcoming show. This podcast is provided by Ben Glass and Steve Emmert www.BenGlassReferrals.com - www.Virginia-Appeals.com   Granted Appeal Summary Case FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, ET AL. v. HARRISON NEAL (Record Number 191129) From The Circuit Court of Fairfax County; R. Smith, Judge. Counsel Elizabeth D. Teare, Karen L. Gibbons, and Kimberly P. Baucom (Fairfax County Attorney’s Office); Stuart A. Raphael, Trevor S. Cox, and Matthew R. McGuire (Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP) for appellant. Edward S. Rosenthal, Lana M. Manitta, and David C. Rohrbach (Rich Rosenthal Brincefield Manitta Dzubin & Kroeger, PLLC); Eden Heilman and Jennifer Safstrom (American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Virginia, Inc.) for appellee. Assignments of Error The circuit court erred in concluding that the Department’s ALPR system is an “information system” under the Data Act because the ALPR system does not itself contain “the name, personal number, or other identifying particulars of a data subject.” Va. Code Ann. § 2.2-3801. The ALPR system does not become “a record-keeping process” under the Data Act simply because police officers have the ability [to] take a license plate number stored in the ALPR system and manually enter it into other databases, not maintained by the Department, to discover the identity of the vehicle owner. If the ALPR system is construed to include information that the Department could potentially access through the NCIC, VCIN, and the DMV databases, which can only be accessed with a valid criminal justice purpose, then the Court should decide anew, based on the changed factual predicate, whether the ALPR system is exempt under Code § 2.2-3802(7) notwithstanding Neal I’s contrary conclusion. The circuit court erred in ruling that the Department’s creation of an “information system” consisting of passively acquired ALPR data violates the Data Act. The circuit court erred in enjoining the Department from creating and maintaining an information system that consists of information captured by ALPR cameras. http://www.courts.state.va.us/courts/scv/appeals/191129.pdf   Granted Appeal Summary Case HARRISON NEAL v. FAIRFAX COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, ET AL. (Record Number 191127) From The Circuit Court of Fairfax County; R. Smith, Judge. Counsel Edward S. Rosenthal, Lana M. Manitta, and David C. Teare, Karen L. Gibbons, and Kimberly P. Baucom (Fairfax County Attorney’s Office) for appellee. Assignments of Error The trial court abused its discretion under Code Section 2.2-3809 in awarding less than 11% of the reasonable and necessary attorneys’ fees and costs proven by detailed billing records and affidavits. The trial court erred by excluding the affidavit of Bernard J. DiMuro, Neal’s attorneys’ fees expert. Assignment of Cross-Error The trial court’s award of attorneys’ fees and costs was error because the circuit court erred in concluding that the Department violated the Data Act, and in issuing an injunction. http://www.courts.state.va.us/courts/scv/appeals/191127.pdf

Roughly 14% of all children in the US are Black but they make up 37% of missing children in the US. Oddly the NCIC groups missing Latino children and white children together, which could exponentially raise the total number of missing minority children.  This week we discuss why minority children are missing at a higher rate than white children and receive far less media coverage. Key takeaways from this episode are that there’s NO 24 hour waiting period to report a missing person. Also do not allow the police to treat your missing child as a runaway if you don’t know for a fact that your child ran away.  (2:27) Amber Hagerman.  (16:22) Distrusting Police.  (22:21) Missing Children.  (38:58) Grooming.  (40:43) Missing Black Children.  (48:59) Exaggerate.  Resources: Black & Missing Foundation, Inc.   According to Mic.com and Newsone.com approximately 64,000 black girls and women are missing in the united states.  Where are they? Who are they? What is Law Enforcements theory on their disappearances?  Where is the media? Where are all these people?  How can so many people be missing in a country where video cameras are everywhere. Can you name 5 missing Black Women, Hispanic Women or Poor Women of any race?  Probably not, unless you’re a family member.  Don’t feel alone, the media can’t either.  There doesn’t seem to be a big push to find these women, why not?  When Natalie Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005 in Aruba while on a class trip.  Media coverage was nonstop for over 2 years. According to Statista Numbers: Provided by NCIC for 2018 Missing White People 362,988 and Missing Black People 207, 394 Of the reported missing persons 211,906 were men and 239,847 are women Because the media simply does not report on missing black women frustration rose within the black community   the sense that these cases were being ignored seemed like another example of "missing white woman syndrome" — a phrase coined by Gwen Ifill, the late PBS anchor. Missing white woman syndrome is a phenomenon noted by social scientists and media commentators of the extensive media coverage, especially in television, of missing person cases involving young, white, upper-middle-class women or girls. This Saturday, July 13th on Behind the Blue Curtain we’ll talk about this phenomenon.  The call-in number is 646-716-4621 and press 1 on your phone if you’d like to add to the discussion.  Please monitor you background noise while talking

What to Do if Your Young One Goes Missing - And How to Ensure They Don’tWelcome to episode 16 of the Safe Living Today Show. This is your host Stephen Carter, former Chief of Police and Corporate Security Director for one of the world’s largest financial services company. The purpose of this podcast is to share with you the tools, tips, and methods for you and your loved ones to stay safe in your home, online, and when you’re out and about in the world. This episode is about keeping children and teens safe and what to do if a young one goes missing.“Time Magazine” reported the the body of a 16-year-old girl from Alexandria, Virginia was discovered 2-weeks after she walked out of her home after receiving a text message from an unknown person. Later that evening, Jholie Moussa sent a text message to her twin sister she was attending a party in Norfolk, Virginia, which is 200 miles away. There is no evidence that she in fact attended a party in Norfolk. Her body was found in a park close to her home.Because runaway cases are so common, police originally believed Jholie wasn’t in imminent danger. Why? Because she left home on her own accord. This sad case points to the risk children and teens face when they act impulsively, trust the wrong person, or choose to run-a-way from home. How many young people go missing? There’s no firm number, but depending on the various sources who track this information reported disappearances run between 400,000 to 800,000 a year. Each one of these missing children is a living, breathing, human being who deserves to be reunited with his or her’s family.Let’s look at two parts of the problem. What steps can parents, grandparents, and other family members take to help ensure a young person doesn’t put herself or himself in a dangerous position?First, talk to young people about the risks they face online. Predators are working social media sites 24 X 7. They usually assume false identities and gain the trust of adolescents - male and female - with the intent of separating the young person from their family. Through smooth online and later phone or video conversations, the young person is lured into meeting the predator. Once that happens, that young person may be given drugs, encouraged to engage in sex, and - in many cases - outright kidnapped. That young person may taken to another city and forced into prostitution. In virtually every case, the victim is told if they try to contact their parents, the parents will be murdered. After a few weeks or months, that young person may be murdered if they’re not “producing” for the human traffickers. Second, monitor your child’s activity online. This can prove challenging if they’re using SnapChat or some of the other applications where messages disappear after a short period. Check to see if these types of applications are on your child’s phone. Consider using parental controls for ‘tweens and young teens to ensure you know what applications they’re using and what they’re doing online.Third, know who your child is spending time with in the physical world. Are they going to the mall? Who will they be with? Drive them to and from the mall and other destinations. Talk to your child about their friends and what kinds of conversations occur with their friends.Engage with your kids daily in a loving, caring way. Listen, learn, and guide. In some rare cases, you may have to take action to protect your child he or she won’t like. Do it anyway. Be a parent, not a friend. Be kind and open, but remember your child needs loving guidance, not unfettered freedom to engage in dangerous activity that can get them in serious trouble or even killed. You’ll find a great resource for facts and conversation starters by going to http://GirlsHealth.gov and selecting the “Relationship” tap. I’ll have this site linked up in the show notes of this episode at our http://SafeLivingToday.com site. The information at the http://GirlsHealth.gov site is valuable for young females and males. Boys face the same risks as girls, including sexual abuse and kidnapping.Let’s turn our attention to the second major part of the problem. What do you do if a child goes missing to increase the probability that the child will be found safe and sound. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is a non-profit organization focused on helping find missing children, reduce child sexual exploitation, and prevent child victimization. They offer guidance on what actions to take immediately. I’ve also added to their list. Actions include:• Immediately call your local law enforcement agency.• When you call the law enforcement agency, report all of the details including:• Your child’s full name, date of birth, height, weight, color of hair and eyes.• Description of last known clothing worn, any scars or unusual marks, description of glasses if your child wears them, any needed medication, medical conditions, and type of braces if worn.• When your child went missing, list of friends with phone numbers if known, details about any previous disappearances, details about any recent family arguments, and any other information that is relevant to the child’s disappearance.• Provide one or more recent photographs. If your child was fingerprinted through one of the child protection programs, provide those prints to law enforcement officials.• Ask the law enforcement agency to enter your child’s information into what’s called NCIC. The agency will know what the national database is.The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children also offers guidance as to what to search in and around your home or location where the child went missing, how to handle a missing child situation in a store, and other vital guidance.Go to their website at http://www.MissingKids.com, that’s www.MissingKids.com. I’ll have this and other resources linked up on the show notes for this episode at http://www.SafeLivingToday.com.In summary, • Young people are at risk for predators on the Internet and in the physical world. • Talk with your kids frequently about those risks, monitor their online activities, and know who they’re spending time with. Be loving and kind, but be firm.• Be a parent, not a buddy. They need boundaries. When you provide those boundaries, they know you care and you love them. • Bad things can happen to good people including your child. Do all you can to keep your loved ones safe.• If your child goes missing, call law enforcement immediately. Have all of the items listed earlier available to give to law enforcement.• Know what to do if your child goes missing in a store or other location. SO toss you quarters up on the table and watch this monkey go.EnjoyFMCJoan: “You know, my ex never came right out and criticized my cooking. He would just make snide remarks.”Mary: “Like what?”Joan: “He'd look at his plate and ask, "Was the dog not hungry?" “Source: Jokes2U 03/31/2008These 16 Police Comments were taken off actual police car videos around the country:'You know, stop lights don't come any redder than the one you just went through.''Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They stretch after awhile.''If you take your hands off the car, I'll make your birth certificate a worthless document.''If you run, you'll only go to jail tired.''Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that's the speed of the bullet that'll be chasing you.''You don't know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?''Yes,sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I am the shift supervisor?''Warning! You want a warning? OK., I'm warning you not to do that again or I'll give you another ticket.''The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?''Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy and corn dogs and step in monkey poop.''Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven.''In God we trust, all others we run through NCIC..''How big were those 'two beers' you say you had?''No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we can.''I'm glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend of yours. Pointing a finger in her face, he said, "From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a tasty dessert afterward. Then, after dinner and dessert, you're going to draw me a bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?" His wife replied, "The fucking funeral director.""Tradition is what you get when you don't have the time or the money to do it right."-Kurt Herbert Adler (1905-1988)These are a few posts on the penny-arcade forum under the thread called strange and embarrassing. There have been about 3 times that I've found myself in the Giggle Loop with my wife. It usually starts with her going in for the passionate kiss, and me finding myself laughing on the inside- for no reason. Then, the whole "glasses on top of glasses" image pops into my head, and I start shaking. She breaks off the hotness, and glares at me- and then I just lose it.It usually ends with her saying "god damn it" and walking off. That happened to me once, but I kept managing to get it under control, at which point she would try to kiss me again. Of course, this would cause me to laugh uncontrollably once again. It went on for at least 5 minutes before she finally walked away in disgust. Sigh. When I first started dating my ex-wife, Saturday Night Live was on while we were having fun and Kevin Spacey was host and was doing an impression of Christopher Walken as Han Solo. I was lucky I ever got to have sex with her again.She's. Fast enough. For you. Old MAN...Remember that XKCD comic with the Power Rangers song from last Monday? Well, 2 days before that, a friend of mine was having sexy time with his girlfriend, when the Imperial March starts playing on her computer. Apparently it kind of killed the mood for a bit.My response was "Dude, you should have just started saying in a really deep voice, "Who's your daddy? Who's your daddy? I AM your daddy!"orbusted out some "We got death stars!"This post was followed by the following"I can't find the exhaust port! I can't find the exhaust port!!!!!!!!!!!!!""But it's two meters wide!"That would get you one hell of a slap. That's no moon...I'm trying to work in a Jek Porkins reference, but I can't quite pull it out."Staaaay on target, staaaay on target!"Loosen up!"Negative! Negative! It didn't go in! It just impacted on the surface!"It came from... Behind.... yyyeaaarghh....The moral of these stories is that I need to learn to suppress memories much more efficiently.-GIM Penny Arcade ForumKagera wrote:“You know what's strange? The best moments of my childhood was when I combined both of those.Stilist wrote: You punched your own wang?Aquabat wrote: Thunder punchedAnd here is the post that I will be submitting to that threadThe summer before this incident I was working in the restaurant of this local amusement park and my job consisted of taking out the garbage and sweeping up. The garbage bags were pretty heavy and I got pretty good at throwing full garbage bags (20 pounds) up into the compactor (about 7 feet up and 10 feet away) after the quick realization that 7 day old fast food and 30 degree heat gave the area around it a smell that was on the high end of the funk-o-meter.Now on with the story it's a year later and I'm cleaning the bathrooms - a much better job than cleaning up food (better pay, better hours and better boss) - and it's the men’s room so far less mess. Anyway this day one of the guys says he has to leave early and asks for me to close up the bathrooms for him. I say ok but make arrangements for him to close for me a night later. So I'm alone and I'm on the last of the 4 bathrooms, the one that is closest to the punch clock but usually the worst to clean up because it's closest to the water park. Everything’s done and I just need to change the garbage in the change room. Now the change room has a baby change table so the change room garbage always has 5 or 10 dirty diapers making it far heavier then the others (the other generally just have a few pieces of food but are full of wet paper towel) which was why I left it for last. So, I change it out and it being a long weekend, it is a bit fuller than normal - it's about 15 pounds of dead weight in a very small package. Now the last thing I need to do is walk the garbage bag full of baby poo over to the gate, open the gate, drop the garbage bag on the ground anywhere on the other side and punch out. I don't even have to stop, there is no way a normal person can screw this up.But I'm a teenager, and I’m male, and most of all I’m ME. Normal is what I swore I would be after I did this. So I'm walking towards the gate (10 feet high) and my brain says to me"I bet we could get this bag over the gate.""NO!” I say back to my brain."Why not?” says my brain “These bags aren’t any heavier than the ones from last year, and besides you've been working out.""Ok, you’ve got a point," I say."And that fence isn't that high and this thing is double bagged...come on you can do it or have you gone soft, you pussy?”"Yah I can" I think. But if I'm going to do this, if I'm going go through with this stupendous act of bad judgment then by god, I'm going to do it right. So looking around and making sure that no one was in the immediate area I grabbed the bag with both hands and give it a good 720 degree spin around me let go AND…….HELL YA it clears the fence. But I don't hear the expected, satisfying thump of the bag landing on the other side. So running up to the fence I find that my boss is now occupying the space directly under the garbage bag and that is when my body took over and ran my ass the long way around to my car and I took off, swearing the whole time, and trying to figure out what to do from the safety of my parents couch. The next day the guy that I took over for got fired. Turns out that he didn't punch out and my boss just assumed that I had forgotten to. And from that day forth I've been trying to be normal. And then this happened…FMCAfter doing my Taxes this weekend I had this ideaAre taxes a form of charitable giving?Well it could be let me check off a few things about taxes.First, they go to a large, non profit organization (a.k.a. “The Government). As we all know, the government doesn't make money - those who run it do - but the actual government not so much, very much like a charity. Those who run the biggest charities have huge salaries much like the government. Most of our taxes goes towards a lot of causes and also office work and facilities - a lot like charities.Money goes to flood victims, feeding the poor, education, health care, infrastructure of all of this, and I'm willing to bet, a few other countries that need it. Much like other charities. You can give more taxes to the charity known as “The Government” by buying booze (I think 50% of alcohol's price is hidden tax) and lottery tickets. Now if only we could get the government to fund the right things – we could all go on a drinking bender and wake with the hangover from hell knowing that somewhere, underprivileged children were getting better education because of it. - FMC
