Dr. Giles Yeo, Cambridge University Professor, author of "Why Calories Don't Count," and Chief Science Advisor at Rio demolishes weight management myths with scientific precision and personal warmth. This mind-shifting conversation reveals why blaming people for obesity fundamentally misunderstands human biology. Full disclosure: I am also an advisor for Rio but I only work with companies I believe in and would use for myself and my family.Bold scientific insights abound as Dr. Yeo reveals why simple calorie counting fails. Rather than fixating on calories, he advocates understanding how different foods affect our bodies uniquely, making a compelling case for cooking at home with quality ingredients as his personal health strategy. The discussion ventures into today's most transformative weight management tools, with Dr. Yeo describing GLP-1 medications as the most effective treatment options he's encountered in 30 years of obesity research. These medications signal fullness to the brain, but surprisingly affect other reward-seeking behaviors too - from alcohol consumption to addictive tendencies. The conversation explores fascinating frontiers in brain science, including Dr. Yeo's groundbreaking work mapping human hypothalamus feeding circuits, and examines how AI-assisted health applications might revolutionize personalized nutrition. Throughout, his compassionate message resonates: obesity isn't a character flaw - it's the result of biological and environmental factors that require understanding, not judgment. Discover why this disco-dancing geneticist believes personalized approaches, not quick fixes, are the future of health optimization.https://rio.life/Free sample chapter -Lies I Taught In Medical School : https://www.robertlufkinmd.com/lies/Complete Metabolic Heart Scan (20% off with 'LUFKIN20') https://www.innerscopic.com/Fasting Mimicking Diet (20% off) https://prolonlife.com/Lufkin At home blood testing (15% off) https://pathlongevity.com/Mimio Health (15% off with 'LUFKIN') https://mimiohealth.sjv.io/c/5810114/2745519/30611 *** CONNECT***Web: https://robertlufkinmd.com/X: https://x.com/robertlufkinmdYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/robertLufkinmdInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/robertlufkinmd/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertlufkinmd/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/robertlufkinmd Threads: https://www.threads.net/@robertlufkinmdBluesky: ...

Another public research group is also being created to focus on AI and advanced technology, with Callaghan Innovation set to close. The moves follows a review by the Science System Advisory Group. Former Chief Science Advisor Sir Peter Gluckman says the changes follow around 80 percent of his recommendations. Emulsifiers are among the most common food additives found in ultra-processed foods (UPFs), a much-discussed category of foods commonly defined as those made using manufactured ingredients. They are often packaged and have a long shelf life. Research examining the impact of diets high in UPFs suggests higher rates of obesity and diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. However, discussions about labeling these foods as "ultra-processed" have also sparked debates about whether their negative effects are primarily due to their high fat, sugar, and salt content, or whether they stem from the effects of processing itself, particularly the additives they contain. In this episode, Jaega Wise explores one of the most commonly used additives in UPFs—emulsifiers. She investigates how they work, what they do, their history, associated health concerns, and their potential future developments.Featuring: Nicola Lando and Ross Brown from the online specialty cooking supplies company Sous Chef; Tim Spector, professor of epidemiology at King's College London and co-founder of the personalized health app Zoe; food historian Annie Gray; John Ruff, Chief Science Advisor at the Institute of Food Technologists; Professor Barry Smith at the University of London's Centre for the Study of the Senses; Professor Anwesha Sarkar, an expert in colloids and surfaces at Leeds University's School of Food Science and Nutrition; and Dr. Benoit Chassaing, a research director at The Institut Pasteur in Paris, who studies microbiota and the health impacts of certain emulsifiers.Presented by Jaega Wise Produced in Bristol for BBC Audio by Natalie Donovan

A signficant situation vacant is causing concern in the science world and beyond. The government won't say whether it's keeping role of Prime Minister's Chief science advisor; a job that has been empty since July. That's despite the coalition agreement saying "decisions will be based on data and evidence."Among other things the chief science advisor provides advice on specific topics to the PM and Ministers and information in a crisis like, the covid pandemic. However, past advice from Prime Ministerial science advisors on dealing with gangs, a rising prison population , and boot camps has run contrary to a number of policies the current government's adopted. The budget for the office has also been cut by half a million dollars. Simon Kingham was Chief Science advisor to the NZTA, up until May this year and spoke to Lisa Owen.

It's estimated New Zealand throws away $3.2 billion of food every year.  The Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor, Dame Juliet Gerrard, has issued 27 recommendations to the Government.  It calls for a national plan and target, smarter monitoring, better strategies to tackle food loss at source, promoting food rescue and upcycling to ensure edible food isn't thrown out.  KiwiHarvest is a food rescue business, taking food that is still perfectly usable so it doesn't get thrown away and giving it to charities and institutions where it would be of use.  CEO Angela Calver told Kerre Woodham that the best way to stop wastage in your home is to meal plan and plan ahead.  She said that a lot of waste happens because of demand, supermarkets doing their best to ensure that if you buy a loaf of bread today, that loaf of bread will be on the shelf tomorrow as well.  Calver said that planning and not over-buying food will help further down the supply chain and reduce waste.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's relentless pursuit of peak performance, might the real key to enduring success lie in understanding our unique rhythms and the notion of 'just enough'? In this episode of The Health Feast podcast, Dr. Rak and Po welcome David Goldman, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS. David is an accomplished sports nutritionist and exercise physiologist, perhaps best known for his role as Chief Science Advisor for the groundbreaking documentary The Game Changers. His expertise has been instrumental in propelling the careers of athletes across collegiate, professional, and Olympic levels. The conversation begins with a candid exploration of anxiety, sensory overload, and the downregulation of the nervous system. David shares personal anecdotes about his own challenges and the strategies he employs to maintain equilibrium in an overstimulating world. The exchange with David takes us on a journey through the world of plant-based nutrition, challenging the conventional narrative of dietary restrictions and opening our eyes to the empowering abundance of choices that can nourish us to our core. The discussion then turns to the physical, where David introduces the concept of 'minimum effective dose' in exercise. Through this lens, we examine how a tailored approach to fitness can maximize well-being and longevity, balancing the scales between the hustle for gains and the wisdom of sustainability. David's wisdom extends to his views on social media. In a world where online presence is often equated with success, he deliberately steps back, valuing deep, meaningful connections over the superficial interactions that platforms encourage. A new report on gangs pours cold water on claims a zero tolerance approach is the best way to deal with the problem. But National is rejecting that, pointing to Western Australia and Queensland's tough anti-gang laws as effective examples of cracking down on gangs. The report published by the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor has warned the country cannot arrest its way out of the gang problem. And it stresses target enforcement can make the problem worse. It also references Australia's experience and highlights the fact that laws meant to target gangs were more often than not used to charge people with no known links to gangs. Queensland University of Technology is Associate Professor Mark Lauchs who's researched outlaw motorcycle gangs spoke to Lisa Owen. Here's hoping Police National Headquarters is listening to the Government's Chief Science Advisor following her report into gangs. Because by the looks of things... she's taking a stronger position on gangs than they are. This might surprise you, because Juliet Gerrard is, after all, the Chief Science Advisor to the Labour Government, who just got endorsed by the Mongrel Mob's Harry Tam. And it's been a while since academia and the general public parted company on how to handle gangs. But you might be pleasantly surprised to find you agree with her on some things, in particular when she said today: "We definitely need to tackle organised crime”. To be fair- what she and the report are arguing is that police and authorities shouldn't target gang members because they're gang members, they should target them if they're committing crimes. Because if they just target the patch on the jacket, they only isolate the gang members more, fuel their distrust of authority, and bolster their numbers. But as the Chief Science Advisor has said, they must target organised crime. The trouble is, that's the opposite of what Police National Headquarters appear to be doing right now.   Instead of cracking down on gangs because they're gangs, they're allowing gangs to get away with behaviour none of us would be allowed to get away with- because they're gangs.  Case in point: Ōpōtiki three weeks ago. Where the gangs were committing offences in front of police and were not pulled up for that. The police stood by, taking photos and videos of gang members pulling wheelies and hanging out the car windows and sitting on the car roofs. And the police will tell you that they are tracking the offenders down after the fact. About last count, they'd only impounded 3 cars and handed out 19 infringement notices. And given that the crowd of gang members was 500 strong, I'm unimpressed. I'm 100 percent fine if we take the approach recommended by the Chief Science Advisor. That we don't target the gang members because they're wearing a patch, and that we instead target their offending.  Because that would be marked improvement on what we've got right now. Which is apparently letting them get away with the offending because they've got a patch on their backs. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There are warnings New Zealand's social cohesion is straining at the seams. According to a report by Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures, rising polarisation stems from a wider breakdown of trust, as demonstrated by the 2022 Parliament occupation. Former Chief Science Advisor and report co-author Sir Peter Gluckman says society can't work without some form of cohesion. "What happens is we find fractured societies and that fracturing leads to tension, leads to crime, leads to disruption, leads to people not feeling safe, leads to society not making good decisions." This week, THE IDEALISTS. podcast host and entrepreneur Melissa Kiguwa resists her conversation with world-renowned Biological Anthropologist, Dr. Helen Fisher. As the Chief Science Advisor for Match.com and as one of the foremost researchers in the area of the neuroscience of love, sex, and relationships, Helen has conducted extensive research and written six books on the evolution and future of human sex, love, marriage, and gender differences in the brain. As a Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute, she studies extensively how personality style shapes who you are and who you love.In this rich, revelatory episode, Helen and Melissa dive deep into Helen's vast, peer-reviewed learnings around the science of romantic love, attachment, and the evolution of courtship.Highlights:- Helen leads off the episode by painting a picture of the history of gender roles and relationship paradigms as the human race shifted from a hunter-gatherer society to an agrarian one, and then evolved again with the industrial age to where we are now.- Next, she discusses her broad sweeping research survey across a sample of millions. While the neurology of love is largely the same across culture, race, and sexual preference, courtship continues to evolve in new and compelling ways—from shifts in power dynamics of arranged marriages to those of video chat dates during the pandemic.- Building on that, she discusses the different relational dynamics at play with the different brain systems and chemicals involved, when it comes to romance, sexual attraction, and deep attachment. She also touches on the different personality types who tend to do better together.- Lastly, she shares her audacious wish for her work in personality science to break new ground in the business space. She believes understanding mother nature's recipe for the brain can help in how we reach different people, build better teams, lead, innovate, and ultimately win.Join the conversation about THE IDEALISTS. and break*through.
