Ecclesiastes 3: 1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: 2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. bethnewellcoaching@gmail.com

He's Pierce, a hot guy with a secret (and it's not that he's part of the military industrial complex, he's proud of that part!) She's Alicia, a widowed mother of two who works in a romance novel boutique! Welcome to Send No Flowers by Sandra Brown - if you'd like to listen to our previous book by her way back in Episode 36, which believe you me is equally head shaking, try our episode on Fanta-C! This book is an absolute roller coaster, and I don't just mean the bobsleds at Disneyland that these two are trying to dry hump on. He literally kidnaps her kids in the woods! Her best friend stole her fiancé! She very sensibly takes a huge promotion and never feels like a bad mom about it, which is so unexpected in a book like this that I spent the rest of the book waiting for the other shoe to drop! (The other shoe is that Pierce is extremely cagey because he may or may not have a disease. Whatever.) The content warning that I forgot to mention is that her kids are realistically awful to her and any parent is going to be wincing hard at it. Too close to home, Sandra.

In this episode, Michala chats to John Henry Phillips, author of The Search and presenter on Channel 4's, The Great British Dig. In 2016, John Henry volunteered with a military charity that took veterans to Normandy. A mix-up over the accommodation led to an unlikely friendship with 92-year-old WWII veteran Patrick Thomas, who was only one of 10 survivors onboard landing craft L.C.H. 185 when it struck a mine off the coast of France. John Henry gave Patrick his word that he would build a memorial to those who were killed and find the shipwreck, which was somewhere in the English Channel - at this point, he couldn't even dive! John Henry's journey to make this promise a reality is captured in a brilliant documentary, No Flowers on a Sailor's Grave, available on PBS. Michala and John Henry discuss this remarkable mission and also delve into John Henry's Romany Gipsy family history. For full show notes and photos, head here: allthroughalens.com We're talking to Travis Cannady (@travis_cannady on IG), photographer and publisher of Better Off Zine. For our main feature, we'll tell you the story of the nearly-forgotten, yet wildly influential Margretha Mather (@betteroffzine). And that means we'll have to talk about Edward Weston too, so… apologizes all around. We've also a zine review and maybe even the answering machine. Travis Cannady Along with being a film photographer and lab technician, our guest today, Travis Cannady is a zine maker. He creates and publishes his own, but he also does something pretty remarkable. He puts out a zine called Better Off. Each issue, the entire zine is dedicated to a single photographer. It's the zine equivalent of a solo-show. Or really, it's how some early photography periodicals used to do things. We've got him here, so let's talk his ear off. IG: @travis_cannady IG: @betteroffzine Web: traviscannady.com Buy Better Off Zine: betteroffzine.com Here are some of his photos: Margrethe Mather (and That Other Guy) The story of Margrethe Mather is not a simple story to tell. She was not a simple woman, nor a simple photographer. She was an anarchist in every sense of the word and held neither gods nor masters above her. Though wildly creative, she had little ambition for self-promotion, once telling Edward Weston, to leave her unremembered, to “pretend that I didn't exist.” In biographies of Edward Weston prior to the 1980s, if she is mentioned at all, Margrethe Mather is hardly more than a footnote. She was thought of as a woman, often naked, who posed for the great Edward Weston. The story of the two of them together had been consumed into his story alone. And it is our job to separate them. But that is no easy task. However, by Imogen Cunningham's reckoning, “in artistic matters Margrethe was, of course, the teacher. Edward, the pupil.” Margrethe's influence upon Weston can hardly be overstated. He followed her lead, and sometimes flat out copied her style. They were friends, companions, lovers, collaborators and ultimately estranged. Their relationship was in many ways mutually toxic. But since humans are always complicated, it was also mutually essential to their growth as artists. Here are some of Margrethe's photos: And here are some of Weston's photos taken of and with Margrethe: The Center for Creative Photography issue we reference is available here: https://repository.arizona.edu/handle/10150/641064 You can borrow Artful Lives by Beth Gates Warren online here: https://archive.org/details/artfullivesedwar0000warr/page/n7/mode/2up We also recommend: Margrethe Mather & Edward Weston; A Passionate Collaboration also by Beth Gates Warren. There are no other books about Margrethe Mather. There are a shit ton of books about Edward Weston. Zine Review Fool Me Once, Fool You Twice by Tee Ferguson This is highly saturated, full color, 88 page perfect bound zine made up entirely of double exposures, all of which happened in-camera. She'd shoot an entire roll, re-roll it and shoot it again. This allowed for happenstance and serendipity to work their magic. Hillary Fisher (hillfish.com) was raised in New York City. She is a product of Whitney Houston Academy, LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts, & Pace University's Musical Theater BFA program. She got my start as a New Jersey recording artist. She then found myself performing in arenas such as Madison Square Garden, and Radio City Music Hall. From there, she started doing theater professionally at the age of 11 at the American Girl Doll Store in NYC. This led her to my on-camera career starting with a Guest Star Role on Sprout. She has always been passionate about working on new projects that fulfill my duty as an artist to move society forward. When she is not behind the camera, or up on stage you can find her enjoying a roller skating rink, a high energy group fitness class, or the beach.

This month's podcast features not one but two poets, both published by Blue Diode: Juana Adcock, author of Split, and Tessa Berring, author of Bitten Hair. The poets discuss what their other creative endeavours (translator and visual artist) feed into their poetry. They also discuss violence against women in Mexico, writing long poems, and why language is like froth. Juana Adcock is a Mexican-born Scotland-based poet and translator who works in both English and Spanish. In her first book Manca, she explored her native country's violence. Her translations have been published in Asymptote and Words Without Borders, and she has worked on translations for the British Council and Conaculta, Mexico's council for culture and the arts. Tessa Berring is an Edinburgh-based artist and writer. Her poetry has recently appeared in Gutter Magazine, Magma, and The Rialto. In 2017 her poetry sequence Cut Glass and No Flowers was published by Chicago-based Dancing Girl Press. She is also 1/12th of '12', a women's poetry collective based in Scotland.

I was drawn to her food, and then I became drawn to her HUSTLE. I linked her up to a pop up my friends had and after I tried her food I had to invite her to come promote it on the show. The story behind the Hustle can teach you a thing or two about life. I was humbled, inspired, and I know you will be too. Everyone has a Story.... This is Flower's.

We're only two episodes in, and we already blew up our own schedule. Why? Because recently, Elias led a conversation with our partners at Inner City Weightlifting that was too important not to share. In this special episode of The American Dream, you'll meet four members of the ICW team who are sharing their experiences with systemic racism and mass incarceration – and the work ICW is doing to drive change by turning suffering into solutions (and mud into flowers). Thomas Washington - ICW Coach and Advocate: Thomas, M.P.H., joined ICW in 2018 as a Coach & Advocate who specializes in helping students achieve their ICW certification. He has been designing and leading workouts for students and clients there. Jermaine Taylor - ICW Trainer and Gym Assistant: Jermaine was introduced to ICW in September 2012. Prior to ICW, Jermaine was a reputed leader of one of the most historically violent street gangs in Boston's recent memory. Prior to that, he spent time with the Department of Youth Services, with the earliest incarceration being at the age of 7. The direction in which Jermaine has come from is not indicative of where he is heading. Jermaine said, "ICW is the first program I've been a part of that wholeheartedly understands this. The fact that we take the time to deal with individuals on a case by case basis, and need by need basis really separates ICW from a lot of other programs. One mountain at time, one muscle at a time!” Feliciano Tavares - Chief Program Officer: A Boston Native, Feliciano has spent the majority of his almost 20 year career working with the "proven-risk" population across the state of MA. Prior to ICW, he spent the last 7 years of his career at the Boston Public Health Commission working for the Division of Violence Prevention's Safe and Successful Youth Initiative (SSYI). Throughout his career, he has shown a dedication for the improvement of the lives of the most vulnerable people within his community.Ian Kilpatrick - Head of Corporate Partnerships: Ian's role at ICW is to build and create strong community relationships through its Corporate Training program.Learn more about ICW here: https://www.innercityweightlifting.org/ Be sure to hit the subscribe button to get new episodes when they drop every month. In the meantime, be sure to leave a ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ review and share the pod with your friends. This week, we press on in the Gospel of Luke. In Luke 5, Jesus is appearing to swat at a hornet's nest by forgiving sins. Wow! You may not find that very fascinating with the luxury of hindsight and knowing the basic message of the Gospel today, but that was big news 2,000 years ago. Only God could do that kind of thing! What was Jesus doing here? There are major things going on in this scene that must be unpacked. Luke 5:17-26 1. Have you ever felt too ashamed to go to Jesus? 2. Did you run from Him because of it? 3. What was the moment you realized you could go to Him? 4. Isn't this kind of an ongoing process for all believers? 5. Do you really believe that He still has the authority to forgive sins? How have you seen this in your own life? Today we're talking about song 4 from 2020101: "Digging That Hole." It's about a situation that all too many of us have had to deal with over the last year: someone in your life getting sucked in by propaganda or conspiracy theories. It's tough stuff. We'll listen to the song and talk it through! If you have a story to share with us about how someone in your life has fallen under the sway of propaganda or conspiracy theories, please consider writing it up and emailing it to us at jamie@misfitstars.com for inclusion in our 2020101 story archive. We can publish it anonymously if that would feel more comfortable.
This week Bennett Ferguson and Stu Watts are joined by Brandon Stone. Melbourne artist Brandon Stone was raised on the north side, and it's time for him to return the love the his home suburbs have shown him all these years. Following the success of singles Fitness, All Out ft Carlito Hendrix, and Front 2 Back ft Junor, his long-awaited debut album, 'NORTHSIDE LULLABY', a collection of epic tales about heartbreak, recovery, triumph and love, is due for release this January. Brandon's always lived his life by the motto "No Rain, No Flowers" and it's that motto that's driven the creation of this project. Inspired by the likes of Drake and his affinity to home city Toronto, this album is a love letter to Melbourne, specifically its' northern suburbs. The North is a family, and those from the area will be able to picture the places he's talking about, and maybe even the people whose stories he's telling. This album isn't for the emotionally fragile - there's a lot of heartbreak discussed and wounds uncovered. However, from heartbreak springs hope, and across the record, you'll hear an incredibly mature 20 year old go from utterly despondent to feeling triumphant. It's a redemption arc that mirrors Brandon's own life, and he'll be the first to tell you that he's experienced some ups and downs. This record goes out to the ones that stuck by him that whole time.Having previously been endorsed by outlets including FBI Radio, Spotify and Apple Music, Brandon has been hearing the calls for this project for a while now, and it's time that those calls were answered. If you're looking for an album that proves the existence of light, even in the darkest hour; then you'll want to spin this one front-to-back. The North is starting to make some serious noise, and Brandon's carrying the area on his back. Dallas Tamaira or as he is better known as, Joe Dukie, is the vocalist for the New Zealand group Fat Freddy's Drop.Stepping out of the rush in 2020, Dallas Tamaira presents ‘No Flowers', his first solo release in over two decades.Under the moniker of ‘Joe Dukie', Dallas has risen to international acclaim as the velvet-smooth vocalist for Fat Freddy's Drop. A true juggernaut, Fat Freddy's Drop is recognised worldwide as one of the finest live draws. The band's tour across Europe and the UK came to a dramatic halt earlier this year, and upon his return to New Zealand, Dallas had to shift down a gear for self-isolation and lockdown. This was serendipitous for Dallas, a self-proclaimed introvert, who turned the potentially negative experience of lockdown into a positive and productive time. Dallas says that shifting to a slower and more peaceful pace of life and making slow music really made sense to him during this time. With this release, Dallas makes a welcome return to his roots as a solo artist. Peaceful and slow, ‘No Flowers' is a timeless classic. The soulful rhythm and acoustic guitar reflect the aroha that Dallas has for the late Bill Withers, a musician who has deeply influenced his music. The lyrics were sparked by an image from the 1960s, taken by Dutch-born photographer Ans Westra, whose journey brought her to Aotearoa in her late teens. “It all came from that photo,” Dallas says, describing Westra's image of a mother holding her child, her hands dusted with flour. “In many ways, there's a little bit of her in all New Zealand women. My mum can relate to holding a kid and making bread with floury hands.”‘No Flowers' is a deep and soulful dedication to the strong women in Dallas' life. It's a tribute to these powerful women who hold it down – always with grace – and welcome you at their table.‘No Flowers' is the first release, with more on the horizon.“…Tamaira, “one of the most soulful singers of his generation” BBC's Jon Lusk, BBC “Singer-lyricist Joe Dukie (real name Dallas Tamaira), whose smooth, soulful vocals have led him to be called “a Maori Marvin Gaye” Christine Moritz, Variety Is The SpiceFollow Dallas Tamaira here:https://dallastamaira.comhttps://www.instagram.com/dallas_tamaira/https://www.facebook.com/Dukietown/SPOTIFYMuch gratitude to the sponsors of this podcast:https://blessitbee.com.auEnter promo code STUART for 10% offhttps://www.themilkcleanse.comEnter promo code STUARTWATKINS for 10% offhttps://sacredtaste.comEnter promo code STUARTWATKINS for 10% offWith love,StuSupport the show (https://stuartwatkins.org/podcast/)

Montreal's Geneviève Racette has just released a wonderful new album "No Water, No Flowers". A thoughtful and introspective folk-pop release, it's her first bilingual effort, and effortlessly moves back and forward between songs in English and French. The album has a bit of a concept feel to it, as it takes you through songs about life, death, grief, love and travel - almost as if it's exploring the 'circle of life'. Geneviève Racette joined us on Folk Roots Radio to chat about the new album. Music: Geneviève Racette “Les Lignes De Ma Main”, “Margo’s Song” and “Magnetic Love” from “No Water, No Flowers” (2019, Self) CDN.

We're doing our best to keep our promise of catching up on our backlog of listener suggestions, and on episode #86 we're back with another. This week, we give a listen to Send No Flowers from the UK, and their lone full-length release from 1996, Juice. Like our recent review Headswim, the gentlemen of Send No Flowers are giving us their take on early '90s American alternative rock. We both found Headswim had a hard time finding their own sound, stuck repeating instead of reinventing bands like Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. Does Send No Flowers fair any better? Tune in and find out. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Porcelain 6:26 - History of the Band 11:06 - Cold 14:39 - Porcelain 18:21 - Monotony 21:37 - Bitter Taste Outro - Animal Feeder Follow on Twitter / Facebook Support the Podcast : Donate / Merchandise
