It's been nearly two months since Paris 2024, but athletes who have spent years training for the Games are still processing what happened there. Today we're talking with Canadian race walker Evan Dunfee about his Paris 2024 experience. Paris was Evan's third Olympics and marked a radical shift in his race schedule--for the first time his marquee event--the 50K walk--was off the program, and he'd be racing the 20K as well as the race walk mixed relay, a new event for the Olympics. We've talked with Evan before about the change in race distances, but how did it turn out? Evan joins us again to break down his 5th place finish in the 20K, which, if you loved our Paris 2024 Toilet Talk segments, this also has something for you. But in all seriousness, Evan's experience is a story of adaptation, perseverance and dealing with a situation you can't control. Be sure to follow Evan on Insta and X! In Paris 2024 news, the Olympic Rings are no longer on the Eiffel Tower, but will they make a comeback? Jessica Long responds to the bullying situation at the Paralympics. The Organizing Committee has started recycling items from the Athletes' Village--you might be able to score some sweet Paris 2024 deck chairs at Restlos online auctions. We also have news from Milan-Cortina, which includes updates on the sliding track and budget; the Winter Games 2030, and the International Olympic Committee. When we think of athletes being professionals, we often think of the big bucks that are in major sports. But for most Olympic and Paralympic sports, the pot of money is pretty small and that's because the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) behind them are running on shoestring budgets.   On this episode we talk with Ramsey Baker about the challenges small NGBs face and how they think about sponsorship and broadcast rights in working to increase their budgets. Ramsey is a SVP at Aggregate Sports, a consulting firm that helps NGBs find sponsors and broadcast partners. Prior to joining Aggregate Sports, Ramsey spent 18 years at US Figure Skating in various leadership roles including Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Director.   Also, a doping case has rocked the swimming world. The World Anti-Doping Agency just confirmed that 23 Chinese swimmers tested positive for TMZ ahead of Tokyo 2020, but took those positives to be inadvertent and dismissed the cases. However, this has many up in arms.   We have plenty of news from Paris 2024, including: More hospitality houses An installment of our new medal-payment novela, in which the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations is furious with World Athletics (get your popcorn for this one!) #Olympian #councilor #medalist #Happy #healthy #fulfilledlife Thanks for tuning in to watch and listen to Evan Dunfee a highly successful, inspiring world class athlete and aspiring politician. This was a special podcast episode with the Canadian Olympian Evan Dunfee. Evan developed a passion for sport and in particular long distance race walking at the age of ten. He set a goal to become an Olympian at that young age and accomplished that years later. He then much to his surprise became one of the stories of the games because of his selfless act of sportsmanship. When Evan finished 4th and just out of the medals and then was awarded 3rd place after a review the country celebrated. That celebration was short lived as he was then subsequently stripped him of that medal and he decided to not appeal that decision. You have to watch and listen to his story around those events. Eventually Evan continued his athletic pursuit and has travelled the world and continued his goal of being the best in the world at something. He won races and was on the podium at others and then finally got a chance at redemption at the Olympics and was able to get onto the podium and celebrate a bronze medal! His story is inspirational and heartwarming because his passion and hard work have created a happy, healthy and fulfilled life so far! Evan was born and raised in the city of Richmond, BC Canada and in training has walked over 50,000 KM(over 31,00 Miles) in this community. He gained a new perspective of this community when the pandemic hit and he had an opportunity to live stream the political meetings in Richmond. He got inspired to make a difference and decided to throw his hat in the ring and run or in his case walk for a seat as a city councilor. He is in the last week of his campaign and joined us to discuss this pursuit and speak about his athletic accomplishments! Thanks Evan for your valuable time and energy we really appreciate it. All of our TKFLASTANIS are very dear to us, but Citizen #1 will have a special place in our hearts. Bobsledder Josh Williamson, winner of the first season of Team USA's "The Next Olympic Hopeful" was our first interviewee, and now he returns, on the cusp of fulfilling his "Next Olympic Hopeful" goals and making it to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. We catch up with Josh and learn how he's approaching this season, what it's like to become a veteran in the sport, and what the bobsled track at Beijing is like (POV video here). Follow Josh on Twitter and Insta In our history moment on Atlanta 1996, Alison dives into maybe the most controversial phrase that came out of Juan Antonio Samaranch's mouth during the Games. Also on tap, we've got news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Evan Dunfee, Dawn Harper Nelson, Connor Fields and Stephanie Roble. In our Beijing 2022 update, the Olympic Flame is officially lit and has traveled to Beijing, though not without controversy. The Torch Relay, of which there are few details, includes the inspiring slogan "Health, Joy and Energy." Alison is not impressed by Jill's attempts to spruce that up. And we have news from Milan-Cortina 2026, in which we are completely unsurprised to learn of venue changes due to cost containment needs. The Games aren't even for another 4+ years, but maybe it's a good thing that they've figured this out now. Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive! For many athletes and teams who have yet to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, the global virus outbreak is spoiling plans and ruining hopes.Qualifying events are being canceled or postponed almost daily, and time is running out for athletes to prove they meet the standard.Rowing was the latest sport to find itself in flux yesterday when it canceled two World Cups, the European Olympic and Paralympic qualifying regatta, and the final Paralympic qualifier. All were to be held in Italy from April 10 to May 10. World Rowing said it wants to relocate the qualifiers and was talking with other countries. It hoped to offer good news next week. For now, the Asia and Oceania qualifying regatta, and the final qualifying regatta are still going ahead on from May 17-19 in Lucerne, Switzerland. On Monday, the International Judo Federation canceled all Olympic qualifiers through April 30, including a Grand Slam and two Grand Prix. Another Grand Prix last weekend, in Morocco, was canceled earlier. Judo qualifying ends on May 25."It is of paramount importance to keep the judo family safe in these difficult times, and also to ensure fair chances for all athletes engaged in the Olympic qualification," the IJF said.Other sports as diverse as weightlifting, swimming and badminton have also been postponed indefinitely or canceled outright. The African weightlifting championships in Mauritius next month were postponed on Tuesday. The Asian champs set a week later in Uzbekistan were canceled last week.Because of the virus, the international governing body is allowing lifters yet to qualify, to register for major qualifying competitions out of their region, such as the European, Pan American or even the Oceania champs. The Badminton World Federation, however, has refused to extend the qualifying period, and noted players from its leading nation, China, have been healthy and passed tests for COVID-19.Badminton has lost three tournaments alone this month in Europe — in Germany, Portugal, and Poland — with the end of qualifying rapidly approaching on April 26.One of its biggest events outside of the world championships, the All England Open, is going ahead on Wednesday in Birmingham.Chinese teams have pulled out of numerous events worldwide, and others like Russia gymnasts teams have cut back their schedules. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia. The vast majority of people recover from the new virus. According to the World Health Organization, people with mild illness recover in about two weeks, while those with more severe illness may take three to six weeks to recover. In mainland China, where the virus first exploded, more than 80,000 people have been diagnosed and more than 58,000 have so far recovered.International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach wrote an open letter to athletes last week saying the IOC was working with other sports bodies "to ensure a fair Olympic qualification," but didn't say how it might work."I want to personally thank you for all this flexibility and solidarity, which is the true Olympic spirit," he added. When the virus was still largely confined to China earlier in the year, events were moved — boxing and taekwondo qualifiers to Jordan, basketball to Serbia, triathlon to Spain. Now the little space left in the calendar is vanishing. The Olympics open July 24.When qualifying events do take place, athletes may compete in unequal conditions. Many countries require quarantine for visitors from areas affected by the virus.Endurance athletes in particular are feeling the pinch.Evan Dunfee of Canada is the world championship bronze medalist in the 50-kilometre walk, the longest event on the Olympic athletics program. Athletes need weeks of recovery between races. Rescheduling qualifiers will be of little use, he a...

Evan Dunfee is a top name in the sport of elite race walking, but perhaps more importantly, he is an outspoken advocate for both clean sport and athlete rights. Evan finished an agonizing 4th at the Rio Olympics in the 50K race walk and then came back to earn the coveted bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha in 2019. Kara and Chris interview Evan, and they discuss both experiences including the one thing that made that 4th place finish in Rio particularly satisfying (hint: clean athletes), plus how he prepared for the extremely hot and humid conditions in Doha. We discuss his beginnings in the sport of race walking, which actually started with him as a runner at an early age. Evan gives us a lesson in how race walking - "running with rules" - actually works and how he progressed from a national talent in Canada to an athlete who could compete with the best in the world. Evan holds nothing back as he discusses doping in race walking, the Russian ban, and what can be done to elevate the athlete's voice through all of it. If you know nothing else about Evan Dunfee, then you will want to listen to hear his story about getting kicked out of a competitive venue for yelling doping accusations at an athlete who would later be banned. Evan isn't afraid to tell it like it is, and we could certainly use more athletes like him in the fight for clean sport.

It seems that there are moments in sport that, while rare, find a way of universally resonating. Tying both fans and non fans together, sweeping up even the most apathetic viewer. One that immediately comes to mind is the game winning goal scored in overtime by Sidney Crosby at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, winning the gold medal in front of a nation looking nervously on. Another one, equally significant for me, is from last summer’s olympic games, watching as race walker Evan Dunfee battled for 3rd with about a kilometer left in the 50km race walk event, appearing to give everything he had within himself, walking himself to the verge of collapse, even when the medal was out of reach. Looking back, it’s what I imagine the Greek soldier Pheidippides looked like as he completed his famed journey from the battle of Marathon to Athens. It’s with that imagery, I tell you that Evan joins us on the show this week to talk about training, racing, finding balance and even a little bit of the business side of things.
