Talking with British historian and folklorist Dr. Simon Young on the enduring presence of supernatural experiences in human life, with a focus on his folk lore project, the Fairy Census—a vast collection of contemporary fairy encounter accounts. We explore the shifting nature of fairy lore across time, the interplay between cultural perception and the supernatural, and the deeper psychological and sociological dimensions of these experiences.Young shares insights from his research, addressing theories of altered states, memory, and the collective unconscious while tackling criticisms of his work and methods. He discusses the history and revival of the Fairy Investigation Society, its eccentric origins in the early 20th century, and its modern role in documenting encounters that defy conventional understanding. The conversation extends to the broader role of folklore in human consciousness, the evolution of belief systems, and its relevance to human society. From fairies to the mechanisms of belief, from historical patterns to personal narratives, Dr Young provides a fascinating lens to understand myth and reality, exploring why stories of the otherworld persist—and what they reveal about us.Dr. Young is a Cambridge-educated historian based at the International Studies Institute in Florence.Excerpts:“In terms of human evolution, there seems to be a certain number of people who have very frequent supernatural experiences. Suppose that somewhere deep inside me, I have a conviction that the supernatural matters, that it's not an embarrassing part of Paleolithic society that sometimes somehow made it through to the present. It is something that to some extent to have healthy lives…What I mean by that is that supernatural experiences, I think, are just part of human programming and increasingly in a rational age, we've started to edit this out leave it to one side. It's become an embarrassment on many levels. I think the experience that people have has a real importance in their lives, and I think it also has real importance in our species…Individuals and society more generally have to be able to absorb and particularly in an age when religion is being rejected and ridiculed these more personal versions of spirituality I think become incredibly important…And I think it's useful to look and ask ourselves, well, what is this really for? What does it do?Timestamps* 02:23 - Exploring Fairy Lore and the Fairy CensusDr. Young describes his background in medieval history and his transition into folklore studies, particularly his fascination with fairy lore and the creation of the Fairy Census.* 04:32 - Transition from Medieval History to FolkloreHe explains how a serious illness in his 30s led him to reevaluate his academic focus, eventually leading him to folklore and supernatural studies.* 05:48 - Understanding Fairies Through TimeDr. Young discusses how the concept of fairies has evolved over centuries, influenced by cultural shifts, religious ideas, and artistic depictions.* 13:37 - Contemporary Views on FairiesDr. Young highlights modern perceptions of fairies, including the influence of Theosophy, Disney, and neo-pagan traditions in shaping current beliefs.* 20:57 - The Influence of Walter Evans WentzHe introduces Evans Wentz, an American folklorist who documented fairy encounters across Celtic regions but controversially attempted to prove their existence.* 30:23 - The Role of Supernatural Experiences in Human EvolutionDr. Young theorizes that supernatural experiences may have been an essential part of early human societies, with a small percentage of the population naturally predisposed to such encounters.* 35:36 - The Fairy Census: Goals and MethodologyHe explains the structure and purpose of the Fairy Census, aiming to collect 2,000 detailed accounts to analyze patterns in supernatural experiences.* 40:08 - Challenges and Criticisms of the Fairy CensusDr. Young acknowledges the self-selecting nature of his survey participants and discusses how this affects the objectivity and scientific validity of his data.* 48:01 - Memorable Accounts from the Fairy CensusHe shares standout stories from the Census, including a man who repeatedly submits his childhood fairy encounter, demonstrating how deeply these experiences remain ingrained in memory.* 55:42 - The Role of Supernatural Experiences in Modern LifeDr. Young reflects on the growing rejection of institutional religion and how personal supernatural encounters might fulfill a psychological or spiritual need in contemporary society.* 01:02:48 - Boggarts and Other Folkloric ResearchHe delves into his research on Boggarts, a distinct type of supernatural entity in northern English folklore, separate from traditional fairies.* 01:04:25 - Final Thoughts and Future DirectionDr. Young expresses his belief that supernatural experiences are a meaningful part of human culture and invites listeners to contribute their own encounters to the Fairy Census.LinksDr Simon Academia Site / Fairy Census SubmissionBoggart and Banshee PodcastBooksNote: Illustration above from Oberon, Titania and Puck with Fairies Dancing circa 1786 William Blake 1757-1827 Presented by Alfred A. de Pass in memory of his wife Ethel 1910 Source Get full access to Leafbox at leafbox.substack.com/subscribe

VYS0044 | For Fear of Little Men - Vayse to Face with Jo Hickey-Hall - Show notes They've talked of night-time scaries, they've talked of shadow men, but they daren't talk of fairies, for fear of meeting them... Bravely, valiantly, courageously, boldly confronting a topic that they have avoided delving into for the past two years, Hine and Buckley take a trip into the terrifying world of fairies with their guide, researcher podcaster and author, Jo Hickey-Hall, creator and host of the hugely successful Modern Fairy Sightings Podcast. Jo talks beautifully on the subject and the conversation flits magically around the topic on gossamer wings and a cloud of enchanted dust: what exactly are fairies? Where did the common "Tinkerbell" trope come from? Do fairy sightings herald a transitional period in the life of the observer? Are some humans part fae? Can anyone see fairies? Just how frightened should we be of the fae?... and what do Pukwudgies, puppets, pork-pie hats and the Monster Munch monsters have in common? Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present Dr. Simon Young, a British folklore historian based in Italy. He has written extensively on the nineteenth-century supernatural. His book Magical Folk: British & Irish Fairies, came out in 2017.The Boggart (from Exeter University Press) and The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends (from Mississippi University Press) came out in 2022. Dr. Young has undertaken the biggest folklore survey of its kind, on behalf of the Fairy Investigation Society and released in 2024 The Fairy Census 2: 2017-2023. His earlier collection, The Fairy Census 1, came out in 2017. The census, revived more than 60 years from the last one, gathered details of as many fairy sightings from the 20th and 21st century as possible, and to measure contemporary attitudes to fairies. He is also the editor of Exeter New Approaches to Legends, Folklore and Popular Legends, which provides a venue for growing scholarly interest in folklore narratives, supernatural belief systems and the communities that sustain them. As well, Dr. Young teaches history at University of Virginia's Siena Campus (CET). Over the years he has run courses on the History of Christianity, Italian Food History, Italian Media History, Contemporary Italian History, WW2 in Italy and Italian Renaissance History. Jo Hickey-Hall speaks to Frank Scannella about his encounter next to the river in Walton-on-Thames in 1982. His story 'Meeting Nicola', was published in the, "It Happened To Me..." section of The Fortean Times (Issue 350, 2017).  This episode was also released as a video on YouTube. The sense of uncanniness about this meeting has always stayed with Frank. There are many liminal aspects to consider: the proximity to water, crossing a bridge, the time of his life between studies. As well as this, various folklore motifs abound: black dog, dark man, strange stillness in the environment (Oz Factor) and the way that the beings appeared and disappeared in a mysterious manner. Most of all, there was a sense that one cannot fully describe. But you will know, if you've ever had a brush with the Otherworld.⭐️ In the bonus episode on Patreon I share related folklore about river-related merfolk, we hear some comparable encounters submitted to Simon Young's Fairy Census and we end with a particularly unsettling story that was posted on Reddit. It is a strikingly similar experience of a young man who came into contact with a strange man along the river in York, England, featuring lost time and other very strange factors. Both men view their experiences as near misses with beings from the Otherworld and feel lucky that they lived to tell the tale. Frank is the author of Sicilian Shadows - a compelling memoir of his struggle for survival in the heartland of the Mafia as a young boy.Podcast intro music: Transmutate by Snowflake (c) copyright 2020 Licensed. Hickey-Hall is a folklorist, researcher and social historian with a long-held interest in the relationship between supernatural experience, local landscape and oral tradition. She was born in Jersey, an island scattered with a network of ancient dolmens and rich in folklore. Partly due to her Irish heritage and the wonderful folktales of her father, Hickey-Hall is particularly inspired by the survival of oral lore in rural communities. In 2015 she gained a Masters in History from the University of Bristol, supervised by Professor Ronald Hutton. Her research focused on the portrayal of the Sidhe in Medieval Irish literature. Together with fellow member of the Folklore Society and author, Mark Norman, in 2016 HickeyHall co-authored a chapter in Simon Young's widely acclaimed book, Magical Folk: British and Irish Fairies: 500AD to the Present. Mark and Hickey-Hall had begun researching for ‘Magical Folk' in 2016 and from there, she created a project called Modern Fairy Sightings. The main motivation of her research is to collate and preserve people's experiences. In lockdown 2020 she created The Modern Fairy Sightings Podcast where people describe their own personal fairy encounters. There's not a single person listening to WMiT? who doesn't know what a Fairy is. Or do they? When the word “Fairy” is uttered, most likely our minds immediately think of a small, somewhat feminine, little winged humanoid that glows. But this conception of Fairies is a somewhat recent one. There is so much more to the stories, the history as well as the behavior of these ethereal and magical beings. Allow yourself to be reintroduced as it were, to the entities we call Fairies by the host of The Modern Fairy Sighting Podcast Jo Hickey-Hall, and the Scholar of the Supernatural Dr. Simon Young!

"There is no reason why the public works budget shouldn't include money for the protection of the reef, because the reef is protecting the economic engine. And we are absolutely in discussions with governments about this kind of thinking." - Simon Young Today we talk with Simon Young, a volcanologist who went diving in the aftermath of a volcano and hurricane, and realized the need for quick remediation of damage following a natural disaster. He now works for WTW, and is helping to pilot a new type of coverage, parametric insurance. Parametric insurance provides immediate compensation for "non-traditional asset classes" - among those coral reefs - after a devastating storm. WTW now manages insurance policies for organizations throughout the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR), and they are planning expansion to the Caribbean and eventually the rest of the world. YouTube Explained by Simon Young Simon Young is one of the leading experts with YouTube in the UK. Rich Schefren, who some call the Guru's Guru when it comes to online business, is Simon's mate. He also has a website with a single-character domain name. You can find out more about Simon and his services at s.media. Kevin said he'd 'dabbled' with YouTube And that's the problem, Simon says. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Simon-Young-YouTube-Dabbled.mp4 YouTube - the hard part - Getting an Audience Graham said we'd like to know more about using YouTube, but it's where do you start. Simon told us to start with the hard part. And that's your audience. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Simon-Young-Start-with-Your-Audience.mp4 So, if you only have 30 or 40 views, can you tell who it is that actually watched the video? Simon says, no. Google knows, of course. But the data is theirs to trade, and for a bunch of reasons, they're not about to provide you with that. Imagine, though how incentivised you'd be if you could profile those people and draw a straight line to a load more people like them. Instead, if you can specify who the perfect audience is for your services, then Google/YouTube will send your communications to them. How Do I Use YouTube? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Simon-Young-How-to-Use-YouTube.mp4 This process gets you to a place where you can weed out the people you don't want. Let's face it, you don't want to spend money on the wrong audience. So, in the first 30 seconds of your video, you want to repel as well as attract! Simon advises you to test. Test and test again! Mortgage Broker example Simon explains the repel statement, then after the 30 seconds go into a case study based on your audience. So they feel part of the story. Take them on a journey and then you can make different videos for separate parts of the audience that viewed the video. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Simon-Young-Attract-and-Repel-in-The-First-30-Seconds.mp4 Google's AI learns from you as an advertiser telling them that you got a conversion. The cost per conversion will be high initially, but over time, with more tests, the cost per conversion will drop. It takes 3 months to learn. And the budget is instrumental too. Spending £500 per day, will get you success quicker than £5 per day. Setting Conversions Simon stresses that you salami slice the process of conversion up. Dr Simon Young is a British folklore historian based in Italy. He has written extensively on the nineteenth-century supernatural. His book The Boggart (from Exeter University Press) and The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends (from Mississippi University Press) are both out in 2022. He is the editor of Exeter New Approaches to Legends, Folklore and Popular Legends . Dr. Young has undertaken the biggest folklore survey of its kind, on behalf of the Fairy Investigation Society. A Cambridge-educated historian Dr. Young, revived the society for a new fairy census - 60 years on from the last one. It gathered details of as many fairy sightings from the past century as possible and to measure contemporary attitudes to fairies, the details of which he shares with us in the show. Simon briefly discusses his new title ‘The Boggart, Folklore, History, Place-names and Dialect. Detailing the little-studied and once much-feared boggart is a supernatural being from the north of England. . We discuss the Wollaton Gnomes - a famous sighting that happened in 1979 in Nottingham, England. A small group of children were wandering the park early one evening when much to their surprise they were chased by gnomes in motor cars! In the Plus section of the show we discuss how children's cultural trends and images can become folkloric figures in their own right and create moral panics. We discuss the nightmare and the interest fairies have in human sexuality. Simon goes into detail how fairy interactions have changed over the last 200 years from more intense, sometimes physical encounters to more sedate sightings. The subject of UFOs and the arguments for and against the fairy analogues come up and we explore some interesting ideas around the men in black and the wider thematic interrelations between the phenomenons. Simon goes on to describe the fairies as ‘social beings' and how they represent a distorted mirror of our own society which provides a way we can think of ourselves outside the box. When most of us think of the term boggart, we probably first come up with the idea of a shapeshifting creature represented in the Harry Potter universe. But this is nothing like the actual folkloric creature which the word actually refers to. Boggarts have not been studied in particularly great detail until recently – they are a supernatural being specific to the north of England but having much in common with other creatures from our folklore.Joining Folklore Podcast creator and host Mark Norman to discuss the subject is historian and author Simon Young. Simon disputes the traditional description put forward by Katharine Briggs that the Boggart was a goblin-like creature, but argues that instead it was a much more general term which encompassed aspects of most solitary supernatural creatures from mermaids to ghosts and all points in between. This approach goes a long way to demonstrate how the continual misrepresentation of the boggart by earlier folklorists led to the fantasy version of the creature that we know today. The Folklore Podcast is an independent podcast, part of The Folklore Network which is striving to collect and preserve folklore material in all forms for future generations. This week, we dance in the space between the Animal and the Fae realm's as I talk Kate's ear off because these are officially my FAVORITE conversations to have. I've been dying to have a back and forth with a fellow seeker of the weird, and this conversation was everything and more for me. I got to share all my rambling thoughts of shapeshifting, animal spirits, Fae and consciousness as we experience in the Earth realm as Kate answered my questions and long winded sentences about these topics with ease. We talk about how collective perception can bring sleeping energies to life, how Kate's time growing up exploring the Sherwood Forest nurtured her relationship with faeries, how human's are quick to call any unknown entity knocking about the house a “demon”, and so much more. I am absolutely filled with wonder after connecting with Kate, and I know you will be too. Join us as I in learn about the energetic beings that are known as the Fae, come and witness me stumbling over my thoughts as they manifest mid-sentence, and be sure to give your dog a treat every time I say “…and I was ALSO thinking…” . When Tinker Bell followed Peter Pan to Hollywood in the 1950s, fairies vanished into the realm of child-lore. Yet in 1923 30-yearold J.R.R. Tolkien’s visit to his aunt’s house Bag’s End inspired a story about hedgerowfairies or ‘Hobbits’, and three years earlier Sherlock-Holmes author Arthur Conan Doyle published the Cottingley fairy photographs. In Ireland, a generation before, family members had torched a woman to death thinking she was a fairy, while William Butler Yeats met a fairy queen in a coastal cave.In addition, Magical Folk includes findings from The Fairy Census, the first scholarly survey of modern fairy sightings in Britain and Ireland, demonstrating that the connection with the past continues unbroken. Another new discovery is that fairies travelled across the Atlantic well before Tinker Bell made it onto the silver screen. The most homesick fairies may have been the ones who dunked one Roderick repeatedly in the Atlantic Ocean as they dragged him to Ireland and back to his Canadian home!Simon Young was awarded a starred First in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from Cambridge University, as well as the Chadwick Prize for Celtic studies. Since then he has lived in Spain, Ireland and Italy, where teaches at the International Studies Institute Florence. The author of many academic articles, he has written for the Daily Telegraph, History Today, the Spectator, and the Guardian. He previously published The Celtic Revolution (Gibson Square). Ceri Houlbrook is a Researcher at the University of Hertfordshire's History Department, focusing on heritage and archaeology of contemporary folklore.

August 20, 2015 It's another Coffeeshop Conversation from World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan. With us in the cupping room is the founder of The Slants, Simon Tam also known as Simon Young…don’t worry, I’ll ask him about that… the purveyors of “Chinatown Rock” a combination of punk, synth-pop, rock and their own special sauce. Yes their name is a key factor, Simon chose it because it is a band made up of all Asian Americans, hence the joke, the slants, but which has much deeper meaning. And we’ll get into that. You may have read about their ongoing legal dispute with the federal government over the trademarking of their name. The feds say it’s disparaging to Asian-Americans, the band says, well, you know, we ARE Asian-Americans. Of course we’ll get into THAT.

On a special two-part episode of the Chainsaw Buffet Podcast, we travel to Anime Weekend Atlanta to talk with The Man Power (http://www.myspace.com/themanpower) and Simon Young of The Slants (http://www.theslants.com/) about their music, bands, and interests (including, of course, anime). Having seen their shows and met them at MTAC this year, there were already some big fans among the Chainsaw Buffet crew. Hailing from Nashville, the Man Power is anything but country. In fact, if you said that to their face, I'm pretty sure they'd melt your face off with their killer otaku-flavored rock stylings, and then blow your mind with their pandemonium-inducing performances on stage. Kneel before the awesomeness that is the Man Power!!

Veteran Podcaster Dean Whitbread, a founder of the UK Podcasters Association, was in town this weekend for Podcamp Boston 2. We met online mainly through Twitter, and I enjoy following his smart and artful blogs, The Blog of Funk and Dean Whitbread.  The iTunes Music Store contains his audio podcast, the Pod of Funk, and his video podcast, deek deekster: innit, both highly recommended. He also introduced John Cleese to podcasting. All this gives Dean lots of experience in podcasting and blogging, so it was a great opportunity to learn from him. Also on this episode, I hear from Simon Young of Auckland, New Zealand, who left an audio comment at the Pod Chronicles line, 206-202-0890. Simon and his wife have a new consulting venture, iJump, helping organisations jump into the social media playground. I first heard about him in an interview he did with Anna Farmery of The Engaging Brand podcast, and I was very impressed with what he had to say about different kinds of writing styles.Music is "Going to the Sun" composed and performed by Montana musicians Christine Dickinson, Janet Haarvig and Matthew Lyon. From their Glacier Journey CD.
