Overstimulation is affecting us all. Everywhere we turn screens, people, and devices are battling for our attention. Without the right tools, it becomes easy to get stuck in the mire or not advocate for ourselves in the best way possible and focus our attention on the future. To discover how we can regain personal agency and make better decisions, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors about their literary guidebooks. Changemaker Paul Napper discusses key elements of his book, The Power of Agency , and the challenges many people face when making decisions in this overstimulated world. Futurist Daniel Burrus describes how we can become opportunity managers and make decisions with confidence using the tenets of his book, The Anticipatory Organization .

There's an Anne Lamott quote that says, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes—including you.” And that's a lovely quote and quite true in so many instances, but also sometimes? Sometimes it can feel next to impossible to unplug. Sometimes that unplugging has to be a dramatic event where you realize that you have to rescue yourself from the habits that are controlling your life, or the people controlling your life and you have to actually take your own control of your life. I know! I know! Terrifying. But the first question is: how do you actually take control over your life? Over at the greatergood, there are some potential possibilities that we're going to share here. It's a great article written by Anthony Rao and Paul Napper back in 2019. Controlling Stimuli They write: “Agency begins with what you let into your mind—meaning what comes in from your environment. If you are lacking agency, it's likely your attention is being hijacked and you need to figure out how to restore it.” A phone next to you when you're reading? It's probably going to distract you, they say. But walking outside? It lets your brain recharge. Same thing with email notifications. Another thing they suggest is . . . “Associate Selectively” They write: “It's impossible not to be affected by those around us—it's easy to “catch” their emotions, for example, and our brains tend to synch up when we associate with other people. That means you should set boundaries with difficult people, disentangle yourself from negative online interactions, and be more conscious of how you might be vulnerable to “groupthink”—pressures to behave or think in ways that are contrary to your values.” How do you do that when that person is your kid? It's a good question. But they suggest making sure you have a lot of interactions with people who want to help you cultivate your skills and talents, grow to your potential, and help you with your positive beliefs. Volunteering and just chatting can help. Move Around Get up. Off the couch. Off the chair. Stretch. Walk. Dance. As often as possible. Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!
These days an unprecedented number of both children and adults report feeling anxious and overwhelmed much of the time. Maybe you are one of them! Many of us find ourselves at the mercy of our smart phones, tablets and other devices, responding to every beep and ping as if our lives depended on it. We also may feel compelled to say yes to every invitation or request that comes our way. But then, when the time comes to follow through, we'd rather enjoy a long walk, spend some fun time with our loved ones or read a good book. In the words of psychologist Dr. Anthony Rao (Tony), we have lost our “agency,' the ability to make wise decisions and put those decisions into actions that are consistent with the life we want to live. We have lost the ability to be effective agents on our own behalf. And, in doing so, we are setting an example for our children to do the same. Tony joins Marti & Erin in this episode of Mom Enough to discuss highlights of the new book he has written with colleague Paul Napper, The Power of Agency: The Seven Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms. In this lively discussion, Tony emphasizes the first three principles from his book: 1) Clear your mind by reducing stimuli; 2) Associate selectively; and 3) Move (or, as Tony says, “Use your body in more beautiful ways.”) He discusses how these foundational principles can be introduced to children of any age, setting the stage for both parent and child to increase their agency by moving on through all seven principles. Marti & Erin were inspired by Tony's framework and practical tips and think you will be too. WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE WISE ADVICE OF DR. RAO? What does the word "agency" mean to you? What would it look like if you increased your agency in the way you live your own life? Or helped your children do the same? Think of the first three principles Tony Rao discussed (clear your mind, affiliate selectively and move). What could you do this week to bring those principles to life for you and your children? He is the co-author of The Power of Agency: The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms. LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS Agency is the thing that allows us to make the right kinds of choices in our lives and live life on our own terms. Two primary “buckets” for agency: Our behaviors and our thinking/processing of emotions. 3 Behavioral principles: 1. Control stimuli. To have agency, you must control the amount of stimuli you expose yourself to. 2. Associate selectively. Surround yourself with people who will make you better. 3. Manage yourself through movement. Move, eat, sleep well. 4 Cognitive principles: 4. Position yourself as a learner. Ask questions about the world, other people, yourself. 5. Manage your emotions and beliefs. Update your story as you need to. If you see yourself as a victim, etc., you will build a life around that belief. NOTE: Values don't change much in life, but beliefs do. 6. Check your intuition. This is a learned skill and the primary mode by which we make day-to-day decisions. 7. Deliberate then act. Slow down and think through important decisions before making them… but don't just deliberate! Agency allows us to adapt. There's no such thing as bad weather… just bad gear! We have the capacity to develop more agency. Instead of doing this, many look for external hacks (medication, etc.). We are all struggling to adapt, so do the work of developing agency in your life. QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? We tell ourselves stories in order to live. Humans live in the stories they construct for their lives, and we're in a constant act of creating and re-creating those stories. Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” Creative, thoughtful, and measured. What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? How did you arrive at that point of view? What book would you recommend to leaders? The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth by Amy Edmondson If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? Slow down, reflect more, and make sure you're giving adequate time to the most important decisions you need to make. As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why?” is always a critical question, and “why not?” is just the other side of the coin. They are both important. Agency is an unusual word for business and we are not talking about hiring an “Agency”. For our purposes, agency is the ability for an individual to act independently and make their own choices. It turns out this concept is central to our ability to manage uncertainty, to adapt and probably to inspire others. What is it, how does it work, why does it matter for uncertain times and, most importantly, how can you have more of it? Tune in to hear more and learn what you can do for yourself and your team.

Joined today by Dr. Paul Napper, a peak performance psychologist that helps business leaders level up their game. He's the author of the phenomenal book The Power of Agency, and that's exactly what we'll talk about today: How to conquer obstacles, make effective decisions, and live life on your terms! Max Out Insights: There are so many different aspects that align and come together to shape our decisions. We make decisions with our whole body, that's why you should work on your limiting beliefs, emotions, physical and mental health. What we choose to believe has massive impact on how we go through life. Pause, reflect and update your beliefs. When we operate with beliefs that are inaccurate and outdated it oftentimes causes us trouble. Agency is important to try and acknowledge what's real and what's not. Agency is essential to feel control in life. Believe in your capacity to influence your thoughts and behaviour. Max Out Quotes: “As individuals, we need to learn how to best adapt.” “Our capacity to reflect is vital to our level of agency. Create your space to reflect, get outside and take yourself into natural environments that promote greater reflection” “We all need to operate with beliefs and assumptions that help us navigate through our lives.” “What we choose to believe in life, influences how we live life.” ”Deliberate effectively and think critically before taking action in your life.” Connect with Paul: Through www.powerofagency.com/ you can find the book and more content to expose yourself to the idea of Agency and how to develop it in your own life.

Dr. Paul Napper Co-Author of The Power of Agency discusses a science-backed approach to living life on your own terms. Agency is the ability to act as an effective agent for yourself - reflecting, making creative choices, and constructing a meaningful life. Grounded in extensive psychological research, The Power of Agency gives you the tools to help alleviate anxiety, manage competing demands, and help you live your version of success.
I have two guests this week—psychologists Dr. Paul Napper and Dr. Anthony Rao. We discussed their recent book, The Power of Agency: The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms (affiliate link). Agency’s an important topic that we probably don’t talk about enough. The three of us explored ways to reclaim greater control over our lives, from engaging more with the physical world to releasing fear and honoring our intuition. We also discussed the benefits of psychodynamic therapy, and how it can complement a cognitive behavioral approach. Other topics we touched on included: The feelings of overwhelm and loss of control that are troubling so many people Factors that contribute to rising levels of stress, including social isolation, technology, and less time outside Why we often feel like we’re not keeping up and taking care of what we need to The radical changes in how we live over the past 200 years The drive for constant productivity that often dominates our lives The enormous amount of information that confronts us every day The value in letting yourself be bored at times The loss of time for moments of reflection The advantages of analog (non-digital) activities How my guests manage their own use of screens and social media The influence that messaging and marketing from digital devices can have on us The pressure young people often feel to do what everyone else is doing The problem with being immobile for hours at a time, and the energy created by movement Lisa Barrett’s work on being able to pinpoint how we’re feeling Why it’s often healing to go outdoors The Japanese concept of Forest Bathing Why practices in stillness (e.g., progressive muscle relaxation; sitting meditation) are so helpful The many ways of practicing mindfulness Why anxiety seems to be the primary emotion (see this episode with Dr. Todd Pressman where we discussed a similar topic) The distinction between stress and anxiety How to distinguish intuition versus fear Anthony Rao, PhD, is a clinical psychologist who completed his doctorate in psychology at Vanderbilt University. For more than 20 years, Anthony worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston Children's Hospital and served as instructor at Harvard Medical School, where he trained psychologists and physicians in the use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Anthony has been a featured expert on documentaries and has been interviewed for articles in The New Yorker, Boston Globe, Washington Times, Chicago Tribune, and Parents Magazine, among many others. His editorial letters and opinions have appeared in a wide range of publications including Newsweek, Scientific American, The New York Times, and New York Magazine. Anthony has also lectured extensively at universities, including Tufts University, Emerson College, and Boston University. He regularly presents at conferences and parenting groups, and conducts workshops for professionals around the country who work with children and young adults. His first book, The Way of Boys: Promoting the Social and Emotional Development of Young Boys (affiliate link), is an expose on the current crisis in American boyhood. It urges parents, educators, pediatricians, psychologists, and other developmental experts to reevaluate and radically alter how we raise boys – so boys can be their best, respecting their unique development right from the start.
But then, when the time comes to follow through, we’d rather enjoy a long walk, spend some fun time with our loved ones or read a good book. In the words of psychologist Dr. Anthony Rao (Tony), we have lost our “agency,’ the ability to make wise decisions and put those decisions into actions that are consistent with the life we want to live. Marti & Erin were inspired by Tony’s framework and practical tips and think you will be too. • Author Paul Napper says there's a common reason so many are anxious in the U.S. • “We actually have a silent epidemic … of anxiety” The United States is chock full of people who are anxious. Anxious about their businesses. Their lives. You name it. One of the reasons, says researcher and author Paul Napper, is that people have lost their “agency.” “This is primarily an American problem. We have gotten to a state of near-overwhelm as a society,” he says. “We are very over-stimulated. We have robust data that suggest there is a tremendous amount of anxiety. We actually have a silent epidemic … of anxiety.” He joins us on today's CVBT Audio Interview Podcast to tell us just what it means to lose one's agency – and what to do about it. There’s a silent epidemic that’s ravaging America, one that’s lurking below the headlines: our near-constant state of anxiety. According to the World Health Organization, the United States is the most anxious nation on earth, with at least one in five people—a full forty million Americans—currently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. A new APA poll reveals that for the second year in a row, two in every three Americans say they are extremely or somewhat anxious. Even our children aren’t spared, with reported rates of anxiety steadily increasing year after year. Our accelerated lifestyles, always-on technology, and ever-increasing job demands have created a tsunami of overwhelm and anxiety, warn renowned psychology experts Paul Napper and Anthony Rao. As individuals, we’ve lost our agency: the ability to deal with stress and act as an effective agent for ourselves—thinking, reflecting, and acting in ways that direct us toward the lives we want. Agency is what humans use to feel in control of their lives. And right now, it’s gone. In our last couple +1s, we’ve had fun (at least I have!) briefly chatting about the first two steps Paul Napper and Anthony Rao encourage us to take in pursuit of cultivating our Agency such that life’s challenges are just nutritious treats fueling our hero’s journeys. Step 1: Control Stimuli. Step 2: Selectively Associate. Today we’re going to talk about Step 3: Move. Here’s how Paul and Anthony put it: “Focusing on movement, and on the nutrition and rest necessary to keep you active and in balance, increases mental and physical strength and stamina–essential building blocks to all body and mind functions.” Want a strong sense of personal power? Well, as we discuss ALL.THE.TIME!!, you better ENERGIZE. Let’s hear it from their perspective. They tell us: “We all know what it feels like to sit around like a slug all day, not getting outdoors and moving about. But when we get some real movement in, it is a kind of agency in itself. It primes our minds and our senses to fully engage in the world.” They continue: “When we say Move, we really mean this: Pay attention to your body so that you can provide it with what it requires to be healthy and in balance, because when your body is out of balance, your mind is out of balance. To achieve this, engage in physical movements in multiple ways, rest adequately, and eat nutritious food. Your agency depends on it. Without physical health and balance in your life, everything else will wobble and decline. Flexibility, strength, and stamina are the most obvious things that begin to deteriorate when you’re physically out of balance. But likewise, your motivation, your ability to pay attention, and your ability to delay gratification are adversely affected. Most important to realize, with unhealthy amounts of movement, rest, nutrition, your psychological state–your thinking skills and ability to manage your emotions– deteriorates, and along with it your personal agency.” That’s Today’s +1. What’s the one thing you know you could be doing that could most benefit your life if you did it consistently starting Today? Got it? Now forget it. (Hah.) What’s one TINY (!!!) little thing you could do RIGHT NOW (!) that would be a fun way to demonstrate some mastery and build your agency? Let’s do it. Together. (Mine? I’m going to take a nice, calming, deep breath in through my nose down into my belly. Then pause for a moment before smiling and exhaling back out through my nose—slightly longer than my inhale—as I relax my body and get ready to give the world some more of what I’ve got!)

In our last little flurry of +1s, we had some fun with Mel Robbins’s 5 Second Rule. Have you tried it out yet? 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… - GO!!! That might be THE most elegantly efficient Tool we’ve discussed to help close the gap between who we’re CAPABLE of being and who we’re ACTUALLY being. (Operationalizing Areté for the win!) Now, one of the key themes of Mel’s book and reasons why that tool is so powerful is the fact that, in addition to getting us to take action RIGHT NOW on what matters most, her 5 Second Rule also builds something that scientists call “agency.” (Mel actually doesn’t use the word “agency” to describe it; she focuses on a parallel idea called “locus of control.” We’ll save that idea for another time.) Agency. It’s a beautiful word. One of my favorites in fact. Science says it’s one of the secret sauces to Optimizing. So, when I fortuitously stumbled upon a book called The Power of Agency on Amazon, I immediately got it and read it. It’s written by Paul Napper and Anthony Rao—two leading consultants and clinicians who have both held academic positions at Harvard Medical School. In their great book, they define agency as “the ability to act as an effective agent for yourself—reflecting, making creative choices, and constructing a meaningful life.” In the book, they provide practical, scientifically-grounded wisdom on, as per the sub-title: “The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms.” We’ll explore a few of the most powerful, practical Ideas on how to BUILD our agency over the next several days. Today I just want to make the connection between DOING WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE and cultivating a strong sense of personal power (aka agency). Well… That and I also want to have a little fun. Imagine that you’re a Secret Agent. (DoubleO-You perhaps. Short for OptimizingOptimusYOU, of course!) You work for your Daimon. What mission is he/she asking you to carry out? Have you chosen to accept it? What’s your next step? Get on that! This message will self-destruct in 5 seconds… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1… - GO!

Now, one of the key themes of Mel’s book and reasons why that tool is so powerful is the fact that, in addition to getting us to take action RIGHT NOW on what matters most, her 5 Second Rule also builds something that scientists call “agency.” (Mel actually doesn’t use the word “agency” to describe it; she focuses on a parallel idea called “locus of control.” We’ll save that idea for another time.) Agency.

Many people today are feeling stressed or overwhelmed by life. The typical approach to treating these issues is to learn how to manage one's symptoms through things like mindfulness or meditation. My guest today argues that mere management is insufficient. Instead, we need to tackle the root of what’s causing us to feel anxious, stuck, and generally lost—a decreasing sense of agency. His name is Dr. Paul Napper and he’s a psychologist and the co-author of the book The Power of Agency: The 7 Principles to Conquer Obstacles, Make Effective Decisions, and Create a Life on Your Own Terms. Today on the show, Paul makes the case that the reason more and more people feel like they're floundering, is that they don't have a strong sense of personal agency. Paul explains what he means by agency, and why learning how to get better at thinking, acting, and making choices for yourself can be the real key to feeling less stuck in life. Paul and I then discuss the seven overarching principles of increasing your agency, as well tactics to put them into practice. Get the show notes at aom.is/agency.
