I am thrilled to be joining the team this year representing vegan muscle at the Mr. America Competition in October of 2023. In honor of this team, I'll be highlighting some incredible members of the team over the next couple of weeks. My first guest is founder, Dani Taylor, the trailblazer behind the VeganStrong PlantBuilt Team, who shares her incredible journey from humble beginnings, surviving on a diet of mac 'n' cheese and hot dogs, to rebelling against her family and going vegetarian at the age of 8. We're coming to you with a dynamic guest: Dani Taylor is a vegan figure competitor and champion. That's right, she's a bodybuilder built from pure plants! She's incredibly healthy and strong now, but she grew up eating a diet that consisted primarily of processed foods and little produce. She reached 210 pounds at 16 years old, but then switched to a plant-based diet at 17 and began to lose weight and take her health into her own hands. She eventually found strength training and began to learn more about food. And she only went up from there! Plantbuilt: A Decade of Compassionate Strength In 2012 Giacomo Marchese and Dani Taylor championed the idea of forming a team of vegan bodybuilders to compete along side non-vegan competitors with the goal of showing that not only could the vegan athletes compete, they could win. They reached out to friends in the community to gauge their interest in participating and the first Plantbuilt team was formed. The team traveled to Austin, Texas to participate in the Naturally Fit Games- a multi sport expo, and dominated the bodybuilding stage. Since then Plantbuilt has competed two more times broadening our base of athletes to include more strength based sports and every time successfully spreads the message of cruelty free strength. 2022 will be the fourth time the team sets out to change hearts and minds, with some familar faces and some new additions to the family. Since then she has become a certified strength and conditioning coach and has coached over a thousand other vegans on their own bodybuilding journeys. Giacomo has been vegan for over 10 years and involved with fitness for over 20 years. He actively competes in bodybuilding and powerlifting, is a master coach and trainer, and holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University Together they are a powerhouse couple making waves in the vegan fitness world, all while spending time and energy raising awareness and supporting other animal rescue organizations. Mike Wolf spent four years working undercover on factory farms. He has seen thousands of animals living in deplorable conditions and witnessed abuse that I think few of us can even imagine. He’s now Director of Investigations for the animal protection organization, Compassion Over Killing. Mike has led investigative efforts into meat, dairy, and egg facilities. He has overseen multiple investigations that have gone viral, sparking a national conversation about the treatment of farmed animals, and ultimately, impacting meaningful change. Among the investigative efforts Mike has led are a 2015 investigation into Hormel supplier Quality Pork Processors, exposing the dangers of a cruel USDA high-speed slaughter pilot program; and a 2016 Tyson Foods investigation that offered the first hidden-camera look inside broiler breeder factory farms and provided hard-hitting evidence that drove unprecedented trials and convictions for cruelty to chickens. Mike also has a strong passion for vegan fitness, and hopes to show how easy it is to gain vegan muscle as a member of PlantBuilt’s Powerlifting team. Since Mike and I met at his home in Arizona this spring, Compassion Over Killing has released another investigation. This time it was Martin Farms, a dairy farm in Pennsylvania that is a supplier for Nestle. The footage that they released is shocking to say the least. It’s absolutely horrific and extremely difficult to watch but I beg you – watch it. Share it. It's the only way that change happens.
