Martin Luther once said, “There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion, or company than a good marriage.”A strong marriage is a blessing but requires intentional effort, especially in a blended family. Today, Ron Deal and Greg Pettys join the show to discuss a valuable resource for second marriages.Ron Deal is a bestselling author, licensed marriage & family therapist, podcaster, and popular conference speaker who specializes in marriage enrichment and stepfamily education and is the co-author of The Smart Stepfamily Guide to Financial Planning: Money Management Before and After You Blend a Family. Greg Pettys, CLU, ChFC, CFP, has thirty-four years of specialized experience in securities and life insurance sales and services. He is the co-author of The Smart Stepfamily Guide to Financial Planning: Money Management Before and After You Blend a Family.Understanding the Financial Challenges of Blended FamiliesWhen two people enter a marriage with previous financial histories, children, and life experiences, their financial situation becomes more complex than that of a first-time marriage. They may bring:Separate bank accounts and investmentsExisting debts and financial obligationsDifferent parenting and financial philosophiesThe need to provide for children from previous relationshipsConcerns over inheritance and estate planningMerging finances in a blended family isn't just about money—it's about trust, provision, and love. Without clear communication and planning, financial disagreements can create tension, causing stress in the relationship. What Is a Togetherness Agreement?A Togetherness Agreement is a structured approach for blended couples to clarify their financial decisions, ensuring transparency and unity. More than just a financial plan, it is a tool for fostering trust and eliminating fear. It's not just about bank accounts and investments—it's about love, respect, and providing well for one another. It brings clarity to emotionally charged financial topics, ensuring that both partners are aligned in their vision for the future. Why Is a Togetherness Agreement Important?1. It Provides Financial TransparencyMany couples enter marriage with financial baggage—whether it's debt, differing views on money management, or past experiences that have led to distrust. A Togetherness Agreement creates a safe space for full financial disclosure.2. It Helps Prevent Conflict Over MoneyMoney is one of the top stressors in any marriage, but in blended families, the stakes are even higher. The agreement ensures both spouses are on the same page regarding financial expectations and responsibilities.3. It Protects Children and Future GenerationsWithout a clear plan, assets and inheritance can unintentionally drift away from children from previous marriages. The agreement helps ensure that financial resources are distributed according to the couple's wishes, not just default legal systems.4. It Strengthens Marital Trust and UnityA Togetherness Agreement fosters open communication, allowing couples to plan their future confidently rather than fearfully. It shifts financial discussions from potential sources of conflict to proactive, loving conversations. What Should a Togetherness Agreement Include?A Togetherness Agreement can be as formal or informal as a couple chooses. While some opt for a legally binding contract, even a simple written plan can be valuable. Key components may include:Bank Account Structure—Should finances be merged, kept separate, or a combination of both?Debt and Credit Considerations—How will existing debts be managed, and how will future credit decisions be made?Business Ownership—If one spouse owns a business, what will happen to it in the event of death or divorce?Financial Responsibilities—Who is responsible for household expenses, savings, and long-term care for aging parents?Inheritance and Estate Planning—How will assets be distributed to biological and stepchildren?Contingency Plans—What provisions are in place for special needs children, elderly parents, or unexpected life changes? When Should Couples Create a Togetherness Agreement?Ideally, discussions about financial planning should begin before marriage. However, it's never too late to start if you're already married and haven't had these conversations. If you're dating, start the conversation now. If you're already married, don't wait—begin today. The Smart Step Family Guide to Financial Planning provides a step-by-step guide to help you navigate these important discussions.A Togetherness Agreement is an essential tool for blended families to navigate finances with wisdom, clarity, and love. By fostering open communication and financial unity, couples can build a secure foundation for their marriage and their future. If you're in a blended family, consider creating your own Togetherness Agreement today—it might be the most valuable financial decision you ever make. For more insights, pick up a copy of The Smart Step Family Guide to Financial Planning and start building a financial roadmap that aligns with your family's unique needs. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My question has two parts. Discussing finances can lead to very real challenges. The process of "merging money" can easily become complicated and overwhelming for blended family couples. Martin Luther once wrote, There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion or company than a good marriage. Having a good marriage takes work maybe a bit more work if you're a blended family. Today We'll talk about a great tool for second marriages with Ron Deal and Greg Pettys. Deal and Pettys are the authors of The Smart StepFamily, which is loaded with practical financial advice for blended families. In particular, they've come up with a way for couples in that situation to promote peace and unity in their marriage. THE TOGETHERNESS AGREEMENT It's called the Togetherness Agreement. Couples who form a blended family are blending so many things, both familially and financially. And it's critical to communicate about all of the moving parts and dynamics. In a financial sense, it's attitudes about money, saving, spending, investing etc. It's the debt, savings, and investments each person brings into the relationship. But it's not just about money. It's about providing and loving well, caring, and creating trust in a relationship that can go the distance. Pain from the past creates fear. It's important to talk through those past experiences, including scars from the past, to fully understand one another. The goal is to eliminate fear as a barrier to your oneness. The Togetherness Agreement is about writing the rules for our marriage with love and respect for both parties. They advise couples to make this agreement a written binding, legal contract. Marriage itself is a binding legal contract, but there is a lot of important information that isn't addressed in standard marriage documents. For instance: How many accounts should you have? Should you combine all of your finances? What does fair mean? Is fair always equal? What about the rights and roles of children, grandchildren or others? You include a story about a couple Anthony and Jenny who put their Togetherness Agreement into action. What was their situation and what did it do for them? Learn more about The Smart StepFamily Guide To Financial Planning at FamilyLife.com/Blended. On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: ● How can you help a single parent with a big schedule and financial challenges? ● After reaching a full employer max, should you invest your money outside of the matched account? Gospel Scripture: (all NIV) Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” Romans 3:24 “and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Romans 3:25 (a) “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.” Hebrews 9:22 (b) “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:11 “Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Romans 10:9 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Luke 15:10 says “In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Romans 8:1 “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Ephesians 1:13–14 “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Before the April 24th, 1989 release of ‘Full Moon Fever’, Tom Petty was coming off of a pretty rough period in his life both professionally and personally. His last album with the Heartbreakers ‘Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough)’ didn’t live up to its expectations and his record label wasn’t happy. But that paled in comparison to what Tom had to deal with in the spring of 1987. On May 17th of that year Tom and his family were sitting down to breakfast that morning when they began to smell smoke. Within moments, Petty's Encino, Calif., home was engulfed in flames. He got his wife and 5-year-old daughter out safely, but the fire burned through the house quickly. The only room that survived was his basement studio. The Pettys had lost nearly everything. He lost an estimated $1 million dollars damages. It was devastating but not the last of the bad news. This was no accident. According to a report, an arsonist had drenched the house's back staircase in lighter fluid. But Tom wasn’t ready to give up yet and he had some very loyal and talented friends who would be right by his side, in the studio the whole way. By July of 1989, Tom Petty was not only back on top, he was bigger than he’d ever been and it all came thanks to the album we’re about to discover – ‘Full Moon Fever’.SIDE ONE:1. "Free Fallin'" 2. On this week's episode, we discuss Kobe's passing and the aftermath, the coronavirus, and protests in France. We also talk about the altercation between Meek and The Pettys.
We've all heard the devastating news of the 9 victims who's life came to an end on Sunday. It was so unfortunate that we lost people who were on their way to do what they love. Life is too short. Meanwhile, Meek Mill approached Nicki and her husband in which seams to be a “jealous” state and everything went left. The Grammys took place on Sunday, which also paid tribute to Kobe Bryant and many others. Congratulations to all winners and nominees!! Thank y'all for tuning in

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has recently increased its use of administrative proceedings, before Administrative Law Judges (ALJs), to seek civil penalties, as an alternative to proceeding in an Article III court. Other federal regulatory and enforcement agencies use ALJs for various purposes at various rates. Although no single set of rules governs all ALJs, they typically differ from Article III courts in important ways, bringing their use under recent criticism. As two examples, ALJs do not enjoy life tenure and they are sometimes employed by and answerable to the agency itself. Our panel will discuss the pros and cons of the use of ALJs at the SEC and other agencies. -- This panel was presented at the 2015 National Lawyers Convention on Thursday, November 12, 2015, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. -- Featuring: Prof. John S. Baker, Jr., Visiting Professor, Georgetown University Law Center; Mr. Stephen J. Crimmins, Shareholder, Murphy & McGonigle PC; Prof. Todd E. Pettys, H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Civil Litigation, University of Iowa College of Law; and Prof. Tuan Samahon, Villanova University School of Law. Moderator: Hon. F. Scott Kieff, Commissioner, International Trade Commission.
he story of Linda and Larry Petty is a love story started over 36 years ago, at Dallas Baptist College. They met, fell in love, and got married. Unfortunately, at the time, it wasn’t to each other. I had coffee with them last week. We talk about their first marriages and what finally brought them together, including an obsessive ex promising to have her in “life or death”, a Dukes of Hazzard-style standoff between a leather clad Linda and her stalker, armed guards at their wedding, and a secret proficiency in martial arts. Since then, our own Liz and Dick have become arguably two of the most recognizable performers in the local music scene. Linda’s flame-red hair, custom designed Joan Ross wardrobe, her Texas-sized collection of jewelry, and stalwart piano man have become iconic in Dallas. It hasn’t always been that way, of course. We talk about the early days when a shy classically trained gospel singer first took the stage, in the 1980s, at an Oak Lawn nightclub. Music is so many things. It’s light. It’s sound. It’s color. It’s energy. It’s emotions. — Linda Petty Pour a cup of coffee (or maybe, a Dr Pepper) and listen to our conversation. Linda’s stage persona may be finely crafted and familiar. But what you don’t know will probably surprise you. She tells me the story of the time bandleader, Les Brown, invited her to move to California and front his band — an invitation she declined but artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole didn’t. She’s an ordained minister, holds degrees in psychology, and is a certified clinical hypnotherapist. The Pettys could teach MBA classes in the business of show business. But she will tell you, first, her voice is a gift from God to “bless and heal everyone it touches” and that is why she sings. I believe people will do good, if you give them the opportunity to do good. — Linda Petty We talk more. Pour another cup and keep listening.
