For a team that's supposed to entail the figurative third side of the ball, it seems there is very little info out in the football world about how to take the average high school athlete and make them into the one kid held responsible for all of your special teams situations. It's even been said that some very large colleges will not staff a kicking coach throughout the year. On this episode Joe, Daniel, and Coach Joel Mathews of Headcase Kicking talk through some of the easiest reasons to get involved in your kickers training, the basics of kicking a ball off of a tee and punting, how to identify your next punter and the proper practice plan to make them better without burning them out.

Jay sits down with former teammate and friend Josh McCown, a journeyman quarterback who played alongside Jay in Chicago. Jay dives into Josh's coaching on the high school level, and what he carries into his HS job from his years in NFL systems. And of course with two seasoned quarterbacks, they get into today's QB play in the NFL, and how spread offenses are an accepted standard in today's game, and guys like Lamar Jackson need to adapt to becoming a pocket passer to extend his career. And as Josh's son goes through recruitment he jokes about how wildly different it is from when he and Jay were recruited. Plus both Jay and Josh get into how they've tried to approach football with their kids, and when is the right time to get them into pads and tackle. And it wouldn't be complete without Jay and Josh joking about their ping pong battles in Chicago, and how they approached their games as they got later in their careers. Make sure to follow Jay on Twitter (@JayHasTweets) and on Instagram (@ifjayhadinstagram) for the latest on the show!

I LOVE Football!First, I want to say that I LOVE football! It really helped me as a struggling teen, and even as an adult, football plays a beneficial part in my life. Lessons I've Learned So Far that You Can Use with You and Your Teen!Feedback is important! This is the first year that I've coached with this set of coaches. One of the things that I've noticed that sets the best coaches apart from the others is their ability to give consistent feedback! The coaches who are most respected give consistent feedback. Do something wrong, they're going to calmly let you know. Do something right, they're going to calmly let you know. The best coaches give players feedback, for example coaching on how to block better, then they wait and watch for you to do it right so they can give you feedback in the form of praise. Recently in talking with my son, he told me that he didn't like certain coaches. When I asked him "Why?" he explained that he didn't think that they liked him. Again, I asked my favorite coaching question, "Why?" To which he answered, "I don't think they like anyone. They never tell us anything. They never talk to us."How can you consistently offer feedback? What feedback would you like to offer? For me it's teaching my teen, it's praising his efforts, and it's letting him know that everything is just right. You are responsible for your culture!I love the team that I am coaching with, and I am grateful for the opportunity. I want to be clear about that!I also want to share some of the lessons that I've noticed and some things that you might be able to apply in your home. This lesson has become glaringly obvious lately. You are responsible for your culture. Recently I overheard some coaches complaining about players being late. The funny thing was, this group of coaches is consistently late themselves. They are responsible for the culture that they are complaining about. Not only do they tolerate players being late, but they also model that behavior by being late themselves. Being responsible for your culture is both a blessing and a curse. We can see the negative impact in the example above. This is also a blessing because if you want to change your culture, it starts with YOU. Be the change that you want to see. How are you responsible for the culture in your home, both the good and the bad?How can you take responsibility for your culture? Where would you like to start BEing different? For me in my home, it's positioning myself as the hero by avoiding my tendency to complain and blame. It's creating a culture of responsibility and BEing the hero of our own stories.Excitement is contagious! It's been fun to coach with these coaches. One of the new coaches is my son's favorite coach. When I asked him, "Why?", he said, because he's always happy and excited. This coach is one big buff, athletic-looking, dude! When he gets excited, it's a little scary because he's so massive, but EVERYONE around him gets excited. What if you got excited every time you saw your teen? What if that was one of your new ways of BEing? What impact would that have on you and your teen's life? For me, it's celebrating my teen's victories and successes. It's being excited to see him and spend time with him. Call to ACTION!Join the Firmly Founded Parent membership TODAY!!

Ben Bell is a football coach that is also a Masters Student studying the applications of the Constraints Led approach in Football. His studies led to him to write a book which he hopes will bridge the gap between the theory and the application. 'Introduction to the Constraints-Led Approach: Application in Football' is a coaching resource football coaches can use to understand key theoretical underpinnings such as ecological dynamics, perception-action, degrees of freedom and complexity theory. Examples are then provided within theoretical chapters to assist readers in their practical application. Over 30 designed practices using the constraints-led approach show readers how the theory translates into practice. It was a great conversation...I hope you enjoy.

Coach Parker's Coaching Youth Football Tips and Talk Podcast

What is the Beast Formation? It is the Yale Single Wing Formation from the 1920s developed most likely by Walter Camp. Tom Flores in his Coaching Football book diagrams the Yale Single Wing. I found the Beast Formation in 1994 while doing research on football formations in the Playmaker Football Software app on the Apple Mac. I was coaching my first pee wee team and wanted something easier to teach than the Power I which we were struggling with at the time as new youth football coaches. I eventually wrote a book about the Yale Single Wing in the Power Wing Beast Offense for Youth Football. The main Beast Formation (Beast Tight) has an unbalanced offensive line with 3 sniffer blocking backs aligned behind the 3 outside offensive lineman in the formation. The Blocking Backs / Sniffers stand right behind the OL with their hands on the OLMs hips to give them a nice push off at the snap. The main Running Back / Beast Back is aligned in a shotgun just behind the A gap or strong side OG. You can also align the RB under center. This Beast Formation variation is a power running short yardage formation although many long yardage gains occur routinely. This formation is very strong in the C, D, E gaps. For more information on the Beast Offense head over to CoachParker.org for more info. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coachparker/support

Graduating at 105 lbs. as a wrestler, Bill Shafer did not play high school football. But he loved to kick a football! After the Navy, he played one year of college football at the University of Akron but had to cut his career short, due to employment with the Akron Fire Department. This began, a fun period of semi-pro play and a variety of combines from California to Virginia and even at Canton, Ohio where at 46 years old, he was drafted by the Erie Freeze (Arena 2) but was cut when he was found to be 10 years older than the head coach! As a coach, Shafer worked with the storied Massillon Tigers, home of Paul Brown. It was during this time, that he and his partner David Abdul, developed the Launch Pad Kick Off Tee. This tee was used in the combine that got Shafer drafted at age 46! Shafer has enjoyed coaching players in the youth flag leagues and with Massillon and on his own locally, with kickers trying to get to the next level, with notable success. Now, Shafer, as the Senior Partner with Launch Pad Products has been touring the nation with a growing number of kicking camps, demonstrating the tee's superior capabilities. At 60, Shafer, using the Launch Pad Kick Off tee, is still capable of 60 yard kick offs and 4 seconds of hang time. Still trying to make gains. Welcome to Coaching Football 101, class is now in session. Today's episode barely scratches the surface of all that a new football coach needs to know, but we only have an hour. A football coaching friend likes to say that every man in America thinks he can do two things: grill and coach football (in 2020 you can add doctor to that list). But every experienced football coach knows at least half of that is not remotely true. What You'll Learn in Coaching Football 101 This podcast isn't the place to get into the details of coaching football. The little things like how to design a good play, decide which play to call, or figure out what drills to run during your practice. That's what a lot of new coaches are looking for. But in Football Coaching 101, we need to start at the beginning. Instead, today's lesson is going to focus on 10 things every football coach should know. Young or old. Youth, High School, College or NFL. First year coaches and 30 year veterans. 10 Things Every Football Coach Should Know Here's the list of 10 things every football coach needs to know that we'll kick off Football Coaching 101 with. You coach long enough, you'll learn all of these things through trial and error. Most of these I've learned through a lot of pain and suffering. I want you, new coach, to skip all that. I want you to start out in the fast lane. It's a better way to live. I'll go into each point in depth in the episode, which you can listen to at the bottom of this post. It's all about relationships. That'll get beat into your head any time you ask a coach the most important thing to know. You do not need to learn any plays to get your first job. Drills are for solving problems. Don't waste time on worthless drills. There is no RIGHT way. But there is OUR way. Confidence is critical. Being 'mean' or 'violent' is not. If you're new to coaching football, accept that you know very little. And that's OK. Drop all the excuses. You're a coach. Keep your composure. Terminology in football coaching is not universal. Execution of plays, not the play itself, wins football games. This is a great list to get started. But as I said earlier, it's just scratching the surface. There's a another great post on the most common mistakes youth coaches make here, but it applies to all coaches in my experience. And then there's all the fun stuff you're really looking to learn. The X's and O's of coaching football. There's a great place to start learning more of that too, with JDFB Coaching Systems.
