In Hawaiian mythology, the malevolent spirit known as Kaupe is known to call out to people at night to scare them into committing suicide. According to legend, he once ruled the Nu'uanu Valley and devoured people on both Oahu and Maui. When he went back to Hawaii, he abducted the son of a high chief and brought him back to Oahu so that he could be sacrificed. After they reached Oahu, the High chief learned about a Kahuna who taught him about incantations and a prayer he could use against Kaupe, who was chasing them. At the heiau in Lihue, the father saved his son, and when Kaupe chased them with the latter repeating the prayer, causing the pair to run faster. As Kaupe chased them, the father and his son hid behind a rock. On reaching Hawaii, the father and son killed Kaupe. The spirit of Kaupe continues to linger on Oahu. The mythological creature is described as an enormous man with large claws and a muscular build. It has tribal tattoos all over its body, and its sharp teeth are used to scare potential attackers and prey. Its sharp teeth are also used to bite the flesh of its prey.Read more at https://mythlok.com/kaupe/
On episode 18, Micah and I comment on listener feedback from listeners Vin, Paul and Lu. Vin writes in about Southwest airlines lack of luggage tracking. Listener Paul asks about our favorite aircraft and who we would like to have on the show as a guest. Hint: NASA figures into our answers. And finally listener Lu wants the details on #surprisemom. Apparently, I didn't talk enough about mom and her reactions to my surprise visit. Micah and I then discuss the details of my back to back trips to Lihue, Hawaii. It was my first time to the Garden Island. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn because they had a protected area to go snorkeling. I was also privileged to fly with some great United flight attendants! Thanks once again to all of our listeners and especially our international listeners. Please write in and let us know how you found the show and why you listen. We love hearing from you!!! Opening music is provided by the Madalitso Youth Choir as they sing their Welcome Song, recorded at the lobby of The Royal Livingston Hotel in Zambia. We hope you enjoy the show!

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami did not mince words when he shared his reaction to news of a Kauai couple arrested over the weekend for traveling on a flight from San Francisco to Lihue, after knowingly testing positive for the coronavirus. “It was a reckless action and it really did not put into thought of other people's health and safety. It's disappointing but we know that this is not the first time that people have boarded airplanes knowingly positive and gotten on and made their way to Kauai,” he said this morning on Spotlight Hawaii. The couple was arrested for reckless endangering after arriving on Kauai, and later released on bail. Mayor Kawakami said he is doing all he can to stop the spread of COVID-19 on his island, including a controversial move starting today to opt out of the state's Safe Travels program. For the foreseeable future, anyone arriving on Kauai will have to quarantine for 14 days, which is a major blow to island's the struggling economy. Kawakami said he did not want to take this severe step, preferring instead to mandate a second test for all arriving passengers after a three day quarantine, but the state rejected that plan and so he felt he had no other choice. “We have a well thought out plan that our team formulated to have a second test three days after arrival,” he said. “We had acquired the tests on our own. We had contracts in place to have testing partners go out and administer the second test, but we were denied and the option we were given was to opt out.” Kawakami said he will continue to present his plan to Gov. David Ige in the hopes of approval. Given the limited healthcare capacity on Kauai and the rising case count on the mainland, he said he believes post-arrival testing is safest path forward. “If the fear is the failure of the program, well, let me fail,” he said. “Kauai deserves to be offered an opportunity to see if this model works moving forward, especially since we're seeing a huge rise in cases on the continental United States.”

In our live stream conversation with Kaaina Hull, we discuss Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs), Additional Rental Units (ARUs), and the planning department’s efforts to help create additional housing on Kauai. Like many areas throughout our nation, affordable housing is a challenge on the Garden Island. According to Housing Director Adam Roversi, Kauai needs 5,000 new homes to meet the needs of its current population. Through a variety of projects, programs, and developers, there are numerous projects currently on the books in the near term including: • Ele’ele: Lima Ola – 650 units –Hoping to break ground on infrastructure work in the summer of 2020 • Kapa’a: Hokua Place and Kealia Mauka – Developments that’d provide housing in accordance with Ordinance 860 –Developers are working through a process still years out if approved • Kilauea – 2 acres – still in an investigatory phase in partnership with HPHA • Koloa: Koa’e Makana has 133 units is currently taking applications • Lihue: The ‘Ohana Zone –22 units – Lihue – targeted demographic needing social services – anticipated completion by end of 2020 • Lihue: Pua Loke – 53 units – Lihue- anticipated completion by end of 2020 • Waimea: Hua Kai – 67 units – under construction –primarily a Habitat for Humanity project assisted by County financing. Rentals and for purchase will be available. As you can see, the projects above constitute less than 1500 units so we have a lot of work to do to mitigate our housing challenges. Of all the angles on building affordable housing that I have seen in my fifteen years on the island, Habitat for Humanity has architected the most affordable way to build homes. On Kauai’s residentially zoned parcels, the county allows for options to add additional housing units and in the interview, we discuss the process, review the density, and costs. The ARU is a relatively new ordinance, released in 2019, designed to add small rental units on properties either attached or detached. You can view the ARU ordinance here. The graphic below provides a definition of the dwelling unit types. On A-zoned property (agricultural) ARUs are not currently permitted. Feel free to send me questions regarding these expansion options and my team and I will get the answers for you promptly. Dwelling Unit Count by Parcel Sq. Ft. Threshold

SALES STATS 2ND HALF OF 2019 As we mentioned in our market updates at the beginning of last year, we anticipated a slowdown in sales of single family homes at the mid-to-lower price points. We anticipated, like with most of the nation, that the lack of inventory would keep prices strong. We anticipated that the luxury space (above $1M) inventory would continue to grow, with more sellers than buyers, and sellers needing to become more flexible to get their properties sold. The slowdown did not really materialize as low interest rates, low supply, and high demand sustained throughout 2019, helping to keep the market strong in the mid-range of the market. The high-end of the market did, however, lose some of its velocity. Sales of homes on Kauai were down 3.01% from 598 units sold in 2018 to 580 units sold last year. Sales in the Kapaa-Wailua areas, however, were up 6.74% and in Lihue (the closest thing we have to an urban town-core area) sales were up 12.74%. But in the Hanalei District (Princeville, Hanalei and beyond) sales of single-family homes were down a whopping 21.97%, from 132 sales in 2018 to 103 sales in 2019. Princeville is often the area of highest appreciation when the market is rising. Has the market topped in Princeville? Or did the devastation from the 2018 floods have an effect on the North Shore in general? My notion is that both contributed to the reduction in sales. The slowdown in condo sales were more pronounced with a 15.8% drop from a total of 481 condos sold in 2018 to 405 condos sold in 2019. Sales of condos were down in the Lihue, Kapaa and Princeville areas. In Poipu however, the number of condos sold was almost identical, 149 in 2018 to 148 in 2019. The main reason: the Pili Mai project by the Kiahuna Golf course is almost sold out. Many units which had been pending for a year, were completed and the sales closed. In fact, because the project is now sold out, we are starting to see resales of units for 10-15% above their original costs in 2018 and 2019. INVENTORYThis inventory graph shows the number of active listings in the main categories (we are not including businesses or commercial) and we have continued to hover under 700 listings for most of the last year. September was the month with the lowest inventory for 2019, January 2020 shows an inventory slightly up from 2019 January levels. Active inventory in February shows only 618 properties island wide with 217 listings under contract after the first week in February SALES PRICESReal estate statistics are a great way to take the pulse of a particular market but knowing what the number you are looking at represents can sometimes be confusing. There are two main stats regarding selling price. They are Average and Median prices. Average and median are both measures of central tendency, but the average can be skewed by very large or very small observations. The median is basically the point in the middle of all the properties. Literally, half the properties are less than the median price and half are greater than the median. The average is, of course, simply the average. Take 10 sales, add up their volume, divide by 10 and voila, you have the average. People like to know the average price; however, the median is a better reflection of the market because the median is less likely to be skewed by outliers, like a $24M sale on Hanalei Bay for example. OK, that was a mouthful and maybe more than you wanted to know. You can google “average vs. median price real estate” to find other variants of the definition! The average selling price for a home is down 2.8% from last year. The median price is up 14.4% to $715,000. However, of the 277 single-family homes for sale, only 34 of them are priced at median or less. For condos the average price moved up from $628,573 to $635,007 a modest change of 1% and the median condo price has dropped steadily since peaking in September. Since fall is typically our slower time of year, I can’t yet say this is a trend, especially since the median price is up 3%. DAYS ON MARKET The days on market is the number of days a property has been on the market until close of escrow. In many larger markets, San Diego, Silicon Valley, even Honolulu, the days on market have grown indicating a market slowdown. Here on Kauai, that number vacillates from month-to-month but there is no big trend there that we can see. Normal financed sales take 45-60+ days, so on average homes and condos are frequently on the market up to 100 days before they go into escrow. Listings priced accurately in the area of the market with strong demand helps to bring the days on market down. There are plenty of buyers waiting for the right property, and interest rates continue to be low, so if you have ever considered selling your property, it’s a great time to do so. As always, if you have any questions about real estate in general, feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I’d love to help you any way I can. Aloha and a hui hou!
Bethany Hamilton Born in 1990 in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany, like many girls in Hawaii, began surfing at an early age. But right from the start, Bethany was a natural talent. She began competing at the age of 8, and before she was 10, she’d received corporate sponsorship. After that, the girl was unstoppable. Before she was even a teenager, she was winning competitions against much more experienced competitors. One would think that is her success story right there. After all, although she spent hours practicing, she was succeeding from a young age. What could go wrong at this point? Her problems came from the last place she expected – from just below the surface of the very ocean she loved so much. At the age of 13, while Bethan was lying on her surfboard, her left arm dangling in the water, a tiger shark came up and took her left arm just below the shoulder. Her life had changed in an instant. The people she was with towed her to shore where her father improvised a tourniquet and rushed her to the closest medical facility. By the time she arrived, she’d lost over 60% of her blood. When news of this attack broke out, a fisherman showed pictures to investigators of a shark he'd caught and killed a mile from the attack site. He said the shark had surfboard shards in its mouth. The fact that he had captured and killed the shark responsible for the attack was later confirmed. Bethany spent some weeks in the hospital. By the time she came home, she was impatient. As soon as she was allowed to go, Bethany was back on the water, teaching herself to surf one-armed. There was no way something so small as a shark was going to take from her the very thing she loved best. At first, she needed a thicker, longer board, but Bethany was soon competing again with standard short, lightweight boards. She came in first place at the NSSA National in Australia and came in first again the next year in the US. Bethany’s story is far from over. Since then she has grown up and married. Now she has a boy of her own, but she is still competing all over the world. Losing an arm to the teeth of a shark would convince most people to stay out of the water entirely, but Bethany’s passion and drive overshadowed her experience. She didn’t give up on her passion. Hers is a story of someone who had early success, lost it, and then had to start over again against impossible odds. What is impressive, is that she found a way not only to take back her passion but her championship status all over again. Bethany Hamilton never gave up – even when it would have been easier to do just that. How inspiring is that? https://mentalhealthtraining.info/

A few weeks back i had a week day off and called a friend whom i intended to meet for lunch some time now. His name is carl. I spoke of him on the Charity Tourist Podcast, as he participated in the ride for tots the marine corp toys for tots program. So we met for lunch in Hawaii Kai at the Kona Brewing company. There we chatted. He is an experience and successful business owner and fan of the Ohio State buckeyes so we had a lot to talk about. I was seeking advise on business and input for moving forward. 1st We talked about my 4 Buckeyes comic strip and side project, told him about a few obstacles in finishing the book. He encouraged me to do a pre-order sale of my 4 Buckeyes Book “The Story of OHIO” reassuring me that its better to try and fail than having not tried at all. Well I plan on doing just that and i will alert you to it when i do. 2rd we discussed the show you are listening to now. Hawaii Posts. He made some suggestions about how to target my audience better and gave a few suggestions that would switch up a few things on the show. For instance he suggested that i focus on the events and put the weather and surf at the tail end. Shoots I guess i will give it a try. Now Carl is headed into open heart surgery this week and i ask that we keep Carl in our thoughts and prays as he recovers. Good Luck Carl…God Bless you with a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Life is not a Rehearsal. That’s on the Marque outside a theater pictured on The Verve’s Single by the same name. Life is not a Rehearsal. for real. I remind my son of that all the time to embrace life, prepare for tomorrow but live for today. Tell the people you love that you love them. The Friday after lunch with carl i got a text from my friend David, i went to preschool - college with him and swam on the same team for years with his brother Frank and Doug. Well Davids father passed away. He was a accomplished obstetrician. Think of how many people he helped to bring into this world. He was always pool side at swim meets. Sunday I got another text message from another friend Kenny. He informed me that his father had font be with the lord. His father was a Good kind hearted man who was active as a coach on soccer teams or an adult leader in the scouts. I Let Kenny know as i did with David that i was there for them if they wanted to call and talk. Being in Hawaii and them 3000 miles from here on the mainland i knew i couldn’t be there for either of them in there time of need. Monday Morning I am driving a client to the airport when my friend Todd here on the islands sent a text that simply said “Steve Passed Away Man” I dropped off and replied No … Aw man Todd replied “yeah for real like wtf” Steve Kanemori passed away. 47 years old. It was hard for me to process. Steve is a local braddah who was larger than life, a friend, a business partner, God father to my Children and Uncle to many many kids. I moved out here to by encouragement by a good friend, Josh who moved here after leaving Ohio State. He said to me on the phone, “if you wanna surf and make surf films this is the place to be.” referring to Hawaii. When i moved out here I had $400 cash a near maxed credit card, my bike camera equipment and a duffle bag. Thinking was going to market my brand “Trippin Everywear” by shooting movies with surfer skaters and mountain bikers wearing my brand. Big Dreams small budget, I was broke in a week. I quickly got a videographer job at the wedding emporium where i met Steve and Todd. That was 21 years ago. During that time i lived in Kuliouou Valley with Josh and friends and coincidently that was the valley Steve grew up in so we hung out there and also in kaimuki as i eventually moved closer to work. But then I moved to the North Shore making surf films, Steve stayed in Waikiki and killed it in the wedding video business. He was the best. A mast shot, good with customers and totally dedicated to providing the best possible wedding video. He would shoot 2 maybe 4 in a day and edit most before the next day. In 2004 i moved to Waikiki and set up an office with Steve. He did weddings and Corporate video and i plugged away at sports and adventure videos. When Steve Jobs introduced the Video iPod in 2005 and asked for Video Podcasters. Steve and I came up with the name Hawaii Surf Session Report. He believed in all of my hare-brained ideas and knew how to rib me about my over zealous ambition. After about 7 years together making videos separately and together we eventually closed offices. We stayed in touch and started meeting at the salt flats in Maunalua bay, its a parking lot for boats and trailers and cars and whatnot. We called it the docks…. there really were no docks…. but there is a boat ramp. Anyhow. Almost 3 nights a week for the last 10 years we would meet at the docks with Todd, Trevor, Jay, Brian, Shawn M, Shawn P and family and friends and old friends and we welcomed new friends as they traveled through the islands. W drank beer talk story laugh, rant, encourage, play clash and the kids like Jimmy and Crimson would run around chasing crabs on the beach, light saber wars or gamed the night away under the stars. Steve was alway there. At the dock or even at times of need Steve was there for you. He would be a good uncle to Crim and Jim and talk to them about acting up at home or school and say “boy you better get good grades “ Eventually my youngest Tommy, got to go to the docks. He would give uncle Steve a high five and a big hug when we left . He thought coming out to the docks and seeing tod and uncle Steve was really special. Jimmy Really loved uncle Steve. First fist bump and local handshake always went to uncle Steve. Jimmy would sit in his lap and as he got bigger uncle Steve would joke that he’s gonna have to settle for the fist bump. But Jimmy always gave him a big hug before we parted ways. As we would drive down the Kalani Steve and Jimmy would exchange shakers through the car windows. It was a big thing. He was a big friend and meant so much to so many people. And now he is gone. That fast. here one day gone the next. The last night i saw him we talked about this podcast and my book and the chauffeur job. He was going to be working with me as a chauffeur. we were stoked to be working together again. Even though he still encouraged me to pursue my creative interest. I excitedly told him about an email i got from a website that does travel reviews and they listened to the show and contacted me offering content. I told him i started clearing out my storage unit and found all of my cd from the Surf Session report days, explaining i have rights to all of that music and now i can play that music on the Hawaii Posts. Started dreaming of bringing back Surf Session report for version 2020. Even remarked on how much i wish we could get an office space together…. like the old days. He said “ I never really saw you happier than when you were in the office after coming back from shooting surf and still had to edit but your were happy and stoked you were following your dream and it was working, you gotta believe in yourself. You gotta focus on one thing. You can do it.” I remember saying “ Shoots brother Steve you always believe in me” The night of his passing all of his friends gathered at the docks to celebrate his life. As tradition in Hawaii memorials are made with all sorts of flowers and candles. So we lit some candles opened a beer for Steve. The kids made a R.I.P Steve K with white coral on the sand lot. Todd changed it to R.I.L. as in rest in love, 11 days later the memorial still stand at the docks. His mother will spread his ashes there and We plan on placing a plaque and a coconut tree in honor of braddah Steve. Years ago i made a 3 part series called Fieldtripp Hawaii and Steve was my partner and camera guy. In the episode you will catch a glimpse of Steve. We are taking a quick stop to visit the 50th state... Hawaii. When it comes to modern music, Hawaii has not just been been in a bubble all these years. The artists and musicians here have been hard at work to put their own stamp on genres like jazz, rock, reggae, hiphop, and soul music. On this episode of Excellent Reception, we are focusing on one of my favorite Hawaiian soul songs... "Lihue" by Nohelani Cypriano.
POST-RECORDING UPDATE: 21 SAVAGE IS A FREE MAN!!! (http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2019/02/21-savage-released-immigration-detention-center/) #AbolishICE Congratulations, dear listener! You have excellent taste -- you've picked Honolulu Magazine's "Seven Local Podcasts to Listen to Now!" Ryan and Josh react to their first-ever magazine feature (you win this round, Design Talk Hawaii/ AM 690), unpack Trump's #SOTU (shoutout to #Kauai, which got its first ever "delusional Trump voters in a diner still like Trump" piece in The Garden Isle), and examine Tulsi Gabbard's problematic first major presidential endorsement (I wonder what David Duke thinks about our last episode?) We also share three big updates: one to 21 Savage's situation in ICE detention, one to FreedomHouse's annual nations report, and one to the Oxford English Dictionary. You might say they're all... #hammajang. We round out the show with a sport report -- Paul Pogba's big brother is coming to #MLS! -- and all the #NBA pettiness you need to get you pumped for Team LeBron vs. Team Giannis (sorry I forgot your name, Kostas) in this weekend's all-star game. Have a listen, subscribe, and get in touch! PS: Next time you're at Mariachi Restaurant in Lihue, tip your servers and bartenders well -- they've had to deal with a lot of BS! Some sources claim the name originates from ancient Native American month names, while others point out that Harvest month was recorded as early as in the 700s in both Anglo-Saxon and Old High German languages. In ancient times, it was common to track the changing seasons by following the lunar month rather than the solar year, which the 12 months in our modern calendar are based on. The most common Native American names for the September Full Moon is Full Corn Moon and Barley Moon, and these names do not vary with the equinox. Regardless of where the name originated, the astronomical significance of the Harvest Moon is the same all over the Northern Hemisphere. The Full Moon closest to the September equinox is astronomically special because the time between one moonrise to the next becomes shorter around this time. Normally, the Moon rises on average 50 minutes later every day in a lunar month, which is the time it takes the Moon to travel through all the Moon phases. However, for a few days around the Harvest Moon, the Moon rises less than 50 minutes later than the day before. In the old days, the early moonrise for a few days around the equinox meant that farmers could work and harvest their crops for a longer time in the evenings. We’re a little over halfway through 2017 and our real estate market in Kauai continues to be strong. We’ve recovered significantly from the market crash and for the last five years we’ve had appreciation of about 10% per year in the condo market and 6.5% per year in the single-family home market. Economists are saying that over the next few years, we can expect appreciation to drop a bit to 4% or 5%. I want to take a few minutes to explain a little bit more about our market in greater detail. There are some underlying dynamics in our market that are creating these conditions. First, let’s talk about demand. Anything under $600,000 is in heavy demand from buyers. We have first-time buyers, folks in the mainland looking to retire, investment buyers, and more. We simply don’t have enough inventory for these people. This is creating a situation where prices are continuing to rise at a rapid rate. If you’re looking to buy a home, you’ll need to be prepared to act quickly. There are a little less than 800 total properties on the market right now. If you’re looking in the luxury market between $1 million and $3 million, you have a few more options and can expect a 4% to 6% discount on the list price. I’ve got some historical data to share with you, courtesy of Paul Brubaker. Paul was the Chief Economist for the Bank of Hawaii for 12 years and has been tracking market appreciation. He’s provided a few graphs for us that you can see in the video above. Back in 2000, things were much more affordable. When we get to the peak of the bubble in 2006 and 2007, you can see the market correction and subsequent recovery, which brings us to today. “Anything under $600,000 is in heavy demand.” As you know, our island is divided into five different sections: Lihue, Koloa, Waimea, Hanalei, and Kapaa. Today, we want to talk about Kapaa in particular. This is an area where we have the most demand for homes priced under $600,000. Sales have definitely gone up, but the median price has gone down. What’s going on here? The key word here is median. Even though the median price has gone down, it doesn’t mean prices have gone down overall. It just means that the demand for homes in lower price points is far outpacing the demand in the higher ranges. This results in a lower median price, but sale prices are up across the board. I hope this gives you an idea of what’s going on in the market. If you have any questions for us, don’t hesitate to give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks so much for joining me for Episode #8 of the Where Else to Go Podcast. We're on an island theme right now, having already covered Marco Island, Florida and Lihue, Hawaii. This week we're off to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands with Cheryl and Lisa of What Boundaries Travel Media. The Galapagos Islands recently made the top of Cheryl and Lisa's favorite travel destination after a recent trip to the islands. Getting so close to the flora and fauna of the islands made them feel like they were taking a step back in time. The animals have no fear of humans so they really had a chance to see them in their real habitat. And they add, "One of the highlights was when we snorkeled with the sea lions - they would always come play with us!" You might think that getting to the Galapagos Islands is too great of a challenge to get to and to see the islands because of the restrictions. However, it's an amazing experience to see the animals up close since they have no fear of humans. You will see some amazing land animals like the land iguana or Galapagos Tortoise, land birds like the Blue Footed Booby, and in the water you will swim with seals and an occasional penguin at the Equator!South There are many options on how to experience the Galapagos. You can fly into one of the main islands like San Cristobal and make it your home base while planning day trips to the various islands, or you can opt to take a luxury tour with a group like Ecoventura where your yacht is the “home base” and you travel between the islands with a stop at a different island every day. It surprisingly easy to get to the islands - there are many flights through Panama or even directly into Ecuador (another beautiful place), then it’s just a quick flight out to the islands. Chery and Lisa started traveling pretty much full time in 2007 after leaving corporate jobs and have since visited 6 continents with sights on Antarctica to hit their goal of all 7. Cheryl and Lisa keep busy traveling and writing for their their three blogs: WhatBoundariesTravel, TheTravelPharmacist, and coming soon, the FloridaSpectator. Their focus is on Gen X and Boomer travel with a goal to provide travel inspiration to their readers. They sum it up simply, "We love to travel and even more, love to share our experiences with others so they feel more comfortable traveling." Take a listen to learn why the Galapagos Island should be on your where else to go list. Then follow Cheryl and Lisa on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram and YouTube. If you've enjoyed this podcast, you can subscribe on iTunes. While you're over there, please take a moment and leave us a rating or review. That helps this very new podcast get discovered by others. Episode #7 features another island (last week was Marco Island in Florida), but this week we're heading west to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. Joining me as my guest today is author and adventurer, Heidi Siefkas. Originally from small-town Wisconsin, she now lives in Kauai and also calls the Midwest and South Florida home. Heidi’s books include When All Balls Drop and With New Eyes. Currently, Heidi is writing her third book, Cubicle to Cuba, which features a humorous collection of stories about her travels to Cuba, Peru, New Zealand, Italy, and other far-flung places. Known as the garden isle, Kauai is a different experience than the much of the rest of Hawaii, but beaches and active outdoor adventure are still plentiful. Some recommendation that Heidi makes include: Sunday Brunch at Gaylord's Kauai Beer Company on Rice Street - Food Truck Night on Thursday Rob's Good Times Grill on Rice Street Sunshine Market at Lihue Vidinha Stadium on Fridays Sunset at Lihue Lighthouse or Poipu Beach House Kayak to Kipu Kai (only one on the secluded beach seen in The Descendants) or Wailua River (kayak and hike to secret falls) Hike Nualolo Trail in Waimea Canyon + Picnic Sunset at Kalalau Lookout Surf lesson at Black Pot in Hanalei Bay and Barracuda for Tapas Rent bike and do Kapa'a bike path You can connect with Heidi on your favorite social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram, and YouTube. Be sure to join us next week when we continue talking about islands, this time the Galapagos.
So it was a full moon on Saturday night, but to the naked eye that pale orb didn't look any less replete come Sunday, which prompted me into a fully vocal, soulfully stretched salvo of musical niceness for The Cosmic Jam. Though I never tire of jazz, sometimes it's good to have a few less notes.....lol. Focussing on songs, singers, grooves and less abstract emotions the full moon soul session strays from the beaten path into territory of blue eyed brilliance and boogified danceability with a distinctly jazzy undertow, I love all kinds of Soul music, but I'm not one to dwell on the heartbreak and angst laden side of the tracks, this is (mainly) happy music to lift us beyond the cloying cold of these humdrum winter days. (Obviously not applicable if you're reading this on the other side of the world or in the tropical zones). Keeping it just about 100% vinyl I strapped a selection of vintage goodies on my back and braved the bitter streets of London to deliver this edition of The Cosmic Jam. Maybe these wintry conditions makes me relish the radio even more, or maybe this show was just the tonic I needed... or as I commented during proceedings, maybe it 's just playing tunes that I truly love. Certainly there are some songs here that have lingered with me for many years, the kind of perennial faves that always have the power to come back and reignite that special flame. Extraordinary songs like "Ordinary Joe", which has some of the most killer lines in popular music... "Don't let time and space confuse you, don't let name and form abuse you, just let Big Joe Williams blues you".... always raises and smile and a little shudder of recognition of the utter brilliance of it. Everything But The Girl, Joni Mitchell and Ace may not be everyone's idea of Soul music, but these songs resonate with me in a soulful way. The second hour gets deep with an epic Skip Scarborough tune from Creative Source that rolls and grooves it's way through seven minutes of bliss. Yes we're loved up and spinning some classics, Arnold Blair..... evergreen. Lihue and Stella , beach soul? Then boogified in the final run, with gospel fire digging the sound of music. Ya get me tho? I've obviously run out of worthwhile things to say, so I'll just remind you of a little party we're having, celebrating the talents of three complete dons and having some seasonal fun in a venue that's been close to our hearts for many a moon, and is probably/definitely due to be sold.. sad!! Anyway until next week when the noodle will no doubt be back, be good, be groovy. Peace P.x 1.Ultra High Frequency - We're On The Right Track 2. Don Brown - Don't Lose Your Love 3.
