A currency becomes “internationalized” when it is widely used beyond its home economy for trade, financial transactions, and as a store of value. Achieving that status can lower transaction costs and exchange rate risks, while also enhancing the issuing country's geopolitical influence. Today, the global financial system remains overwhelmingly dollar-centric, with China's renminbi playing a comparatively modest role. Yet over the past decade, Beijing has taken steps to expand its global use, expanding offshore renminbi markets, establishing bilateral swap lines, and developing alternative payment infrastructure. To help us unpack where China's renminbi internationalization efforts stand today, we are joined by Zongyuan Zoe Liu, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Zoe's research centers on international political economy and global financial markets, with a focus on China and East Asia, as well as the Middle East. In this episode, Tamsin Ballard, Chief Investor Initiatives Officer at the PRI, is joined by Oshadee Siyaguna, Head of Stewardship at J.O. Hambro Capital Management and Regnan, to explore early progress and lessons from collaborative investor action on nature.Drawing on insights from the inaugural Spring progress report, they examine how investors are beginning to address financially material nature and biodiversity risks, what effective engagement looks like in practice, and why collaboration is critical in tackling complex, system-level challenges.Overview:Investor action on nature is gaining momentum. With over 240 investors representing more than US $19 trillion in AUM endorsing Spring, engagement is scaling across sectors and geographies.Early progress shows companies are starting to assess nature-related risks and dependencies, while investors are building shared frameworks, tools and approaches. However, real-world outcomes remain limited, highlighting the gap between engagement activity and measurable environmental impact.Detailed Coverage:Nature as a financial riskCompanies are increasingly recognising nature and biodiversity as financially material risks. However, these risks often remain externalities unless supported by regulation or clear policy signals. Why nature is different from climateUnlike climate, which centres on carbon as a measurable metric, nature is more complex and harder to quantify, requiring a broader, systems-level approach rather than single metrics or pricing mechanisms. The role of collaborationSpring enables investors to pool expertise, share resources and deliver more consistent messaging. This collective approach helps tackle issues that are difficult to address through bilateral engagement alone.Key lessons from engagementInvestors are learning the importance of pragmatism, pacing and consistency. Companies need time to build internal capacity, and overly rapid demands risk superficial, compliance-led responses.Gaps and challengesProgress is strongest in operational and supply chain practices, but gaps remain in responsible political engagement, data availability and regulatory clarity.Systems thinking and resilienceA central theme is the need to view nature as part of a broader system. Long-term investment outcomes depend on resilient environmental, social and economic systems. What needs to happen nextPriorities include building capacity across investors and companies, improving data and tracking, strengthening regulatory frameworks, and developing more robust conceptual approaches to nature stewardship.A call to action for investorsInvestors are encouraged to engage, contribute and collaborate. Flexible participation models mean there are multiple ways to get involved and drive progress.Chapters:00:07 - Introduction and Spring progress overview02:12 - Early momentum and investor participation03:19 - Why nature stewardship needed a new approach05:35 - Nature vs climate: complexity and measurement challenges08:25 - Lessons from the first 18 months11:14 - Making nature risks financially material17:20 - Signs of progress and remaining gaps19:59 - Why collaboration matters more than ever26:17 - What needs to happen next31:52 - Final reflections: investor responsibilityDisclaimer:This podcast and material referenced herein is provided for information only. Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this Friday Headline Brief of The Wright Report, Bryan covers the escalating confrontation between Minnesota Democrats and federal immigration authorities, growing unrest tied to anti-ICE activism, new economic signals from the White House, rising global pressure on Iran and China, and a look at medical and technology developments heading into the weekend. Minnesota Democrats Escalate Against ICE: Minnesota media outlets and national Democrats are facing backlash after doxxing the ICE officer involved in the fatal shooting of activist Renee Good. DHS officials warn the move could put officers and their families in danger, echoing past incidents in Los Angeles where officers faced threats and harassment. Vice President JD Vance defended the ICE agent, stating that video and medical evidence clearly show the officer acted in self-defense after being struck by Good's vehicle. Radicalization and Anti-ICE Networks Exposed: Reporting reveals that Good was radicalized through a charter school that prioritizes political activism and later trained with a group called ICE Watch, which teaches tactics to obstruct immigration raids. Bryan explains how activists are instructed to use vehicles, barricades, and incendiary materials to block officers, behavior he says amounts to organized domestic extremism rather than peaceful protest. ICE Operations Expand Nationwide: President Trump is sending an additional 100 ICE officers to Minneapolis, bringing total deployments there to roughly 2,000. In Portland, Oregon, two Venezuelan migrants affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang were shot after allegedly attempting to run over an ICE officer during a traffic stop tied to a prostitution investigation. Democratic leaders condemned ICE actions in both cities, while the administration argues officers are responding to lethal threats. California Loses Federal Transportation Funding: The Trump administration is withholding 160 million dollars from California after audits found that roughly one quarter of the state's commercial driver licenses were issued unlawfully, including to foreign-born drivers who cannot read or speak English. Advocacy groups representing migrant truckers sued to block the revocations, and Governor Gavin Newsom sided with them, prompting federal retaliation. Bryan warns that unsafe licensing practices have already contributed to deadly accidents nationwide. Trump Seeks Massive Military Expansion: President Trump is proposing a $1.5 trillion defense budget, up from $900 billion currently. He argues the increase is necessary for future conflicts and could be funded through tariffs. Budget analysts warn the move could add nearly $6 trillion to the national debt over a decade, raising questions about sustainability and congressional approval. Economic Signals Show Mixed Progress: Layoffs fell in December, trade deficits shrank to their lowest levels since 2009, and the White House announced plans to purchase $200 billion in mortgage bonds to lower interest rates. Federal employment continues to decline as agencies shrink outside of DHS. Bryan notes the strategy appears to be working so far, but court rulings on tariffs could complicate the outlook. Global Pressure Builds on Iran and China: Protests are spreading across Iran, including strikes at critical oil facilities, prompting a violent crackdown by regime forces. President Trump warned that further bloodshed could trigger U.S. intervention. Meanwhile, China is tightening its grip on rare earth exports, cutting off Japan and reminding the world that Beijing will weaponize supply chains whenever it chooses. Health and Technology Updates: New research suggests that certain cancer patients may need to reconsider high glutamine diets during treatment, while UK studies confirm that stopping GLP one weight loss drugs leads to rapid weight regain. Bryan closes with optimism about new lightweight exoskeletons showcased at CES, which may help older adults and injured individuals regain mobility and independence. "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32 Keywords: January 9 2026 Wright Report, Renee Good ICE shooting Minneapolis, JD Vance self defense statement, ICE Watch activist training, Tren de Aragua Portland ICE shooting, California CDL audit funding withheld, Gavin Newsom migrant truck licenses, Trump defense budget one point five trillion, tariff Supreme Court ruling risk, Iran protests oil strike crackdown, China rare earth export squeeze Japan, CES exoskeleton mobility technology
