https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/12/pofcrit-podcast-2024-lily-stripe-on-blue-lagoon-randal-klaiser-1980/ In this podcast we discuss the 1980 Randal Kleiser film, The Blue lagoon. It tells a coming-of-age story of two children shipwrecked on a tropical island, as they grow and develop into teenagers, and discover both themselves and the island. With beautiful sweeping landscapes and gorgeous young stars, it has all the attractions of a Hollywood film. However, its narrative is even more intriguing, both fascinating and bizarre in what it tries to tell, and the way the directors vision comes across. We talk about the frustrations of a story like this being told in a visual medium, and why it had the potential to break out of its western societal box, but failed to do so.
Dennis connects via Zoom with musician Greg O'Conner to talk about his debut album The Place I've Never Been and what it's been like to venture out as a solo artist after decades of writing songs and scores for TV and movies. Greg talks about what inspired him to take such a big swing in his mid-50's, the artists that inspired him like Toto, The Beach Boys, Steely Dan and Bleu, finding collaborators on Facebook and Instagram and posing on a hillside with a piano and live bull for the album's striking cover art. Greg also talks about the real-life experiences that inspired the album and videos, like being ghosted by someone he'd been dating for a while and subsequently falling in love with his fiancé, photographer Kevin Sikorski after meeting on Hinge. He also talks about his extensive work in TV and film, writing music for recent films My Home Unknown and Baby Boomer Yearbook (directed by Grease's Randal Kleiser) and TV shows like The Ben Stiller Show, The Big Gay Sketch Show and MadTV, for which he won an Emmy. Other topics include: falling in love with music at four, writing the viral song "Laura Dern" for the Independent Spirit Awards a few years back, shooting two music videos in one day in Capetown, South Africa and being closeted at USC and waiting in line outside of the Mother Lode bar in West Hollywood and being terrified someone would drive by and see him. www.GregOConnor.com

He also talks about his fascinating upcoming movie with his brother, Grease director Randal Kleiser, which tells a remarkable true tale of heroic teenage girls in wartorn Amsterdam.
Madeline, Julian, and Emilio are joined by guest Jamie Homs as they continue their High School Movies cycle with a "Suggestion Box" episode on the original high school musical, Randal Kleiser's “Grease”. Does the magic of this bright and peppy classic work without the nostalgia of watching it as a kid? In this episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith talks to Director Paul Sng and Producer Jen Corcoron about their new feature documentary Tish, which tells the story of working-class photographer Patricia ‘Tish' Murtha who worked to document life in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s. Anna then talks to Production Designer Sarah Greenwood and Set Decorator Katie Spencer, who worked together to create the distinctive world of Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Tish was the Opening Night Film of Sheffield Doc Fest 2023 and it is a celebration of a life devoted to exposing social inequality through art. The feature documentary is told from the perspective of Ella Murtha, both as daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive. She retraces her mother's relationship with the photographic medium, from finding her first camera in a local skip, to earning a reputation as the ‘demon snapper' and beyond. Anna talks to Paul and Jen about the inspiration behind the project, the power of having working-class stories told from the inside, and asks about their favourite photographs in the Tish archive. Next on Girls On Film, Anna has a lively conversation with Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, whose long time collaboration has resulted in multiple Academy Award and BAFTA nominations, and, most recently, the weird, wonderful and instantly recognisable world of Barbie. Sarah and Katie talk about working with Greta Gerwig in the early design stages of the project, following visual prompts like ‘think Gaudí in a blender' when creating Weird Barbie's house, and the film's many and varied visual inspirations. Tish by Paul Sng is being released by Modern Films in UK and Irish cinemas on 17 November 2023. On demand information: Virtual cinema 22 Dec, TVOD 5 Feb (iTunes, Amazon, Google Play). Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Randal Kleiser, Internationally Renowned Director About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Randal Kleiser, is an internationally renowned and highly acclaimed director who became a global sensation with the release of his very first feature film, “Grease”, which still remains one of the highest grossing and most beloved movie musicals of all time. He also directed “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble”, “The Blue Lagoon”, “Summer Lovers”, “Honey I Blew up the Kid”, “Getting It Right”, “White Fang”, “Shadow of Doubt”, and one of my all-time favourite movies, “It's My Party”, and the critically acclaimed play, “The Penis Chronicles”. For almost 40 years, our guest has been at the forefront of experimenting with technology, digital cinematography and virtual reality, which can be seen not only in some of his feature films, like “Flight of the Navigator” and “Red Riding Hood”, but also at the Disney theme parks, where, for 10 years, his amazing 3-D movie entitled, “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience”, was one of the most popular attractions. He also wrote and directed the Virtual Reality series “Defrost” which was featured at Sundance AND the Cannes Film Festival. And for many years he's been a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Our guest is also a much sought-after educator, and he regularly teaches and lectures at film schools and film festivals. He created an online and DVD course of his former teacher Nina Foch's class, entitled, “The Nina Foch Course for Filmmakers and Actors”. He received an honourary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. And if all of that weren't enough, our guest is also an author. In 2019, he released his first book entitled, "Grease: The Director's Notebook", which is a retrospective look at the making of this classic film. And now, he's released his fascinating new book, entitled “Drawing Directors”, in which he reveals his unique talent for sketching, using a technique called “blind contour drawing”. The book contains candidly drawn sketches, personal anecdotes and comments about the work of some of his favourite directors, including Billy Wilder, Robert Wise, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, and many more, including my dear friend Henry Jaglom, who recently appeared on our show. GREASE - was a pop culture musical phenomenon that took the world by storm and become a right of passage for any child in the 80s and beyond. The Born to Watch team tackles this classic and hand jive all the way to Graduation.Released over four decades ago, "Grease" (1978) remains an iconic and beloved musical that continues to captivate audiences of all ages with its infectious energy, memorable tunes, and timeless themes. Directed by Randal Kleiser and based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, the film has solidified its place in cinematic history as a quintessential representation of 1950s nostalgia, high school romance, and the power of self-discovery. From its catchy melodies to its vibrant choreography, "Grease" radiates a distinct charm that has stood the test of time.Set in the summer of 1959, "Grease" follows the whirlwind romance between Danny Zuko (John Travolta), a leather-clad bad boy with a heart of gold, and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), a wholesome Australian exchange student. After a chance encounter during their summer break, the couple faces the challenges of navigating the social dynamics of Rydell High School upon their unexpected reunion. Danny's tough-guy reputation clashes with Sandy's good-girl image, setting the stage for a delightful exploration of teenage identity, peer pressure, and the transformative power of love.At its core, "Grease" is a celebration of youthful exuberance and the trials and tribulations of teenage life. The film expertly captures the spirit of the 1950s, from the fashion and music to the burgeoning cultural shifts of the era. The lively musical numbers, including classics like "Summer Nights," "You're the One That I Want," and "Greased Lightnin'," are not only irresistibly catchy but also serve as windows into the characters' emotions and desires. The soundtrack's timeless appeal is a testament to its enduring popularity, with audiences across generations still tapping their feet and singing along.John Travolta's charismatic portrayal of Danny Zuko is a highlight of the film, as he effortlessly embodies the role of the lovable rebel torn between maintaining his tough image and pursuing genuine love. Olivia Newton-John's performance as Sandy is equally captivating, as she transitions from the demure, naive newcomer to a confident young woman unafraid to express her true self. The chemistry between Travolta and Newton-John is palpable, lending authenticity to their characters' emotional journey and making their on-screen romance all the more believable. The supporting cast adds depth and humor to the story, with standout performances from Stockard Channing as the sassy and rebellious Rizzo, Jeff Conaway as Danny's loyal friend Kenickie, and Didi Conn as the quirky and endearing Frenchy. Each character brings a unique flavor to the narrative, showcasing the diversity of personalities that make up the high school experience.Randal Kleiser's direction brings a visually vibrant and energetic atmosphere to "Grease." The film's iconic dance sequences, choreographed by Patricia Birch, are a sight to behold, combining slick moves and exuberant choreography that perfectly complement the film's lively musical numbers. The high-energy dance-off at the school carnival and the electrifying hand jive scene are just a few examples of the film's memorable moments that have become ingrained in popular culture.Beyond the catchy tunes and lively performances, "Grease" delves into relatable themes of self-acceptance and the challenges of finding one's identity in the face of societal expectations. The characters' struggles to fit in, overcome peer pressure, and forge genuine connections remain relevant to audiences today. The film's ultimate message of embracing one's true self and following one's heart resonates across generations, reminding viewers that authenticity and self-discovery are timeless pursuits. However, it's important to acknowledge that "Grease" has faced criticism for its portrayal of certain gender dynamics and its lack of diversity. The film primarily revolves around heterosexual relationships and conforms to traditional gender roles, which may be at odds with contemporary sensibilities. Moreover, the absence of racial diversity within the main cast and the predominantly white portrayal of a high school in the 1950s overlooks the multicultural reality of American schools during that period. In conclusion, "Grease" (1978) remains a cinematic gem that continues to shine brightly in the pantheon of musicals. Its infectious energy, unforgettable characters, and timeless themes make it a perennial favorite that has earned its place in the hearts of audiences worldwide. While it may not be without its flaws, the film's enduring charm, catchy music, and vibrant dance sequences ensure that it will remain a beloved classic for generations to come. "Grease" transports us back to a simpler time while reminding us that the journey of self-discovery and love is a universal and everlasting one. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

This week I have the pleasure of having directing coach Mark Travis on the show. I was introduced to him after I watched his stellar workshop Hollywood Film Directing, which he co-instructed with Gil Bettman (he'll be on the show soon). Mark Travis has developed a new way to directing actors called The Travis Technique. Mark teaches directors how to direct the character (not the actor) in order to create instantaneous authentic performances, even on tight schedules and tiny budgets. Here's a bit on The Travis Technique.Acting is too often just pretending. And most directing is demanding and controlling and result oriented. And consequently, the final product suffers. But it doesn't have to be that way. When you use The Travis Technique, you can achieve instantaneous and authentic performances from actors that are deeply felt by audiences. The Travis Technique is an organic approach to directing actors that is guaranteed to create authentic characters and performances by shifting the focus from directing the actor to directing the character.Mark Travis first created his techniques out of the necessity to generate the most authentic performances within actors under a tight schedule and often an even tighter budget. In the last 20-years the Travis Technique has grown and is now used by some of the best directors, actors and writers in Hollywood and the international film market. Mark has taught The Travis Technique to students all over the world in over 50 film schools. When actors, directors and writers use the Travis Technique, it's not just a performance anymore. It becomes REAL! The Travis Technique creates organic authenticity in every performance and under all circumstances. This translates immediately onto the screen and gains enormous attention for the director, actor, and writer.Recommended by Hollywood's top brass: Mark Rydell, Art Seidelman, Randal Kleiser, George Tillman, Asaad Kelada, Jan Eliasberg, John Badham and other A-listers. For over 20-years Mark Travis has been sharing his award-winning techniques on writing, acting and directing worldwide. Most directors make a critical mistake: They direct only the actor, not the character. And that is just one of the many techniques directors must master. They also must learn how to expertly stage scenes, understand exactly how camera angles intensify or diminish a shot amongst hundreds of other skills to become a renowned, in-demand, and working director.Winner of over 30 directorial awards, teaching internationally in 50 prestigious film schools, for the past 20-years Mark Travis' workshops and seminars have covered the entire filmmaking process including: all stages of preparation, pre-production, production, and post-production. Mark has been instrumental in launching successful directorial careers in the US and internationally.Sought out by the most experienced directors, Mark now teaches his signature Travis Technique: a simple, immediate, and powerful Directing Tool, directors can use to achieve instantaneous authentic performances that translate brilliantly onto the screen.Enjoy my conversation with Mark Travis.

We're back after a two week hiatus. In this podcast we chat with my dearly departed brother, for whom we had a memorial service this past week. Jennifer was there, as well as some fans of the podcast. In today's podcast, Jennifer announces that Olivia Newton John wants to chat with us. For those who've never tuned in before (or their last time ever tuning in) we have a group of individuals on the flipside who have spoken to us before. They are mentioned briefly in the podcast, including our moderator Luana Anders and her best friend Sally Kellerman. Sally's husband was Jonathan Krane, John Travolta's manager, my pal and producer of three of my films (including the short film, he's reminding me.) I met Olivia at their home one night of Mulholland, and as noted, Randal Kleiser, the director of Grease and I went to visit Sally in the retirement home where she spent her final years - oblivious because of Alzheimer's, but completely in the moment whenever we brought her chocolate. She's another example of someone who while not aware in person, is completely aware on the flipside of everything we do for them here. Jennifer and I have spoken to the "higher selves" of a number of folks who had it prior to passing. Olivia talks about what it was like crossing over, who greeted her, what the experience was like - and if it was what she expected. I'm sorry I didn't ask for a message for her daughter Chloe - but suffice to say it's better for her to have a private conversation in her own fashion, meditation or perhaps giving someone like Jennifer a call. We have passed along messages in the past - and sometimes I've had to edit them out of the podcast due to their being private conversations. In this case, I'm sorry I didn't ask her specifically for a message for her daughter - as they were close. But if she shows up again, I will. Also Robin Williams stopped by - it's the 8th anniversary of his crossing, and he reminds us to celebrate life in his own unusual way.
Nick Ferrari talks to special guest Randal Kleiser the director of Grease paying tribute to Olivia Newton John. He also tackles nursing strikes and dog ownership price rises as the country continues to feel the pinch of the cost of living crisis.

The film stars Lakshmi Devy, Adith Arun, Naveen George Thomas, Shreya Navile, and Vignesh Shivasubramaniam. The film was written and directed by Lakshmi Devy and is executive produced by John Turturro. “I must say I was very impressed. And disturbed, in a good way!” said Executive Producer John Turturro. “To pull this off is an accomplishment, especially wearing so many different hats as director, writer and actor. It's a worthy and important subject matter which takes all shapes and forms in so many different cultures. I thought the visual elements was strong and the story telling too.” "When The Music Changes" is based on real-life incidents and unprecedented violence and atrocities faced by women in the contemporary world. The film radiates a universal message of women's liberation that needs to be heralded in all nations including developing countries where evils like marital rape are still not taken into cognizance by law. It has already created a following in India and is marking its global U.S. debut. Devy recently won the Gold Remy Award for Best Director at the 54th Worldfest Houston International film festival for “When The Music Changes.” She joins the ranks of other recipients in the industry including Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas, Ang Lee, The Coen Brothers, John Lee Hancock, Brian de Palma, Randal Kleiser, Ridley Scott, Oliver Stone, and David Lynch.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're hopelessly devoted to 1978's not-so shy and retiring musical GREASE, directed by Randal Kleiser. With a screenplay by Bronte Woodard and Allan Carr and based on the stage show written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, this oiled-up extravaganza and is still one of the highest-grossing movie musicals ever made and remains embedded in popular culture like the milkshake stain you can't get out of your jeans. Tonight we'll be splashing around with Sandy and Danny, before heading to the drive-in with Kenickie and Rizzo. Are the two central relationships in this movie electrifying, or are we throwing our lives away on a dream that won't come true? GREASE (1994) COMPOSER: Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey LYRICIST: Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey BOOK: Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey DIRECTOR: Jeff Calhoun CHOREOGRAPHER: Jeff Calhoun PRINCIPLE CAST: Ricky Paull Goldin (Danny), Rosie O'Donnell (Rizzo), Susan Wood (Sandy) OPENING DATE: May 11, 1994 CLOSING DATE: Jan 25, 1998 PERFORMANCES: 1505 SYNOPSIS: At Rydell High greaser Danny falls in love with good-girl Sandy. Throughout their high school days, they, and their friends, try to figure out life and love. Casting Director Stuart Howard details the way producers Fran and Barry Weissler changed the Broadway landscape by employing “Stunt Casting”-- the hiring of celebrities who will draw audiences to a show after the box office inevitably slows-- in the 1994 Broadway revival of Grease. Differences between “Star Casting”-- in which a celebrity with significant stage experience or training replaces a previous performer in a run-- and “Stunt Casting”-- in which no regard is paid to a performer's experience but their notoriety is instead exploited-- are outlined. Though the stars brought to the show elicited a range of responses from the theatre community, audiences, and critics, ultimately, the choices aided by rigorous and inventive advertising campaigns, kept the show running with fresh audiences buying tickets. Some of the celebrities that rotated through the production included Linda Blair, Joe Piscipo, Jon Secada, and Brooke Shields. Following their success with Grease, the Weisslers have continued their infamous casting practices with their revival of Chicago and other productions have taken note and followed suit. Stuart Howard taught at The Juilliard School for ten years and gave Master Classes and lectured at S.U.N.Y. Purchase, the Stella Adler Academy of Acting, Carnegie Mellon University, Purdue University, NYU's CAP21, and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Stuart, Janet Hayes Walker and John Newton founded The York Theatre Company in New York City. Stuart has had his own casting company, Stuart Howard Associates, since 1980. They have cast scores of productions for Broadway, off Broadway, National Tours and London's West End. Recently, they cast the Broadway revival and National tour of West Side Story, Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning August: Osage County, and the original production of La Cage Aux Folles. He is currently involved in the casting of the world premiere of The Heir Apparent by David Ives, Twyla Tharp's Come Fly Away, The Maids by Jean Genet and two new musicals based on the life of Josephine Baker. Grease was a 1978 film adaptation of the 1971 musical of the same name, and mark film-starring turns for leads John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The directorial debut of Randal Kleiser, it followed the romantic and comedic exploits of high school students during the late 1950s, against a backdrop of early rock n' roll and doo-wop. It's considered one of the greatest movie musicals of all time, maintaining a massive following among fans of the genre, featuring now iconic songs like "Summer Nights" and "You're The One That I Want."And we hate it.On this episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott stubbornly trudge through Grease, loathing every minute of it. Join them as they go on a profoundly irritating journey full of bad Travolta impressions, 40-year-old teenagers, intense behind-the-scenes turbulence, and Sha-Na-Na....with Lilz & Scott!
