Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the academy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Mickey Schuch is the owner and an instructor at Carry Trainer, an organization designed to provide a holistic approach to self-defense and firearms training. Mickey is a firearm instructor for Pistol, Rifle, Shotguns, Personal Protection Inside the Home and Personal Protection Outside the Home, a Range Safety Officer, and a member of the Illinois Tactical Officers Association. Carry Trainer provides real solutions for real problems. It is incumbent upon individuals, businesses, and organizations to protect and defend innocent life. Carry Training provides training for individuals who are looking to make themselves the best that they can be. There is much more to self-defense than obtaining a permit to carry a gun. Training in any martial skill is more than attending a class, it is a lifestyle choice and the decision to exercise the right of arming oneself for the defense of themselves and family should not be taken lightly. Bullets cannot be called back once loosed from the gun. Safety is not an inherent trait; it is learned through proper training and repetition. At Able Shepherd we believe that adventure is at the heart of every man, woman and child. Over the last couple years men, women and children through Able Shepherd have participated in several BDR's (Backcountry Discovery Routes) which are routes designed for adventure motorcycle riding. This year they took on the Utah BDR and were met with one incident after another, but ended with the same results as previous...coming back a better version of themselves! Who's Jimmy Graham? Over the last couple months Able Shepherd was under attack for having members of the community protesting a Drag Show in Castle Rock. The protest was not an Able Shepherd organized or sanctioned event. It was men and women who share the same desire to protect their community! Following the event there was a meeting, in this video Jimmy and BK look at this meeting and give context to the conversation. Who's Jimmy Graham? On August 26, 2023 a group of men protested the Douglas County Pride Festival that happened at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. They protested peacefully by simply wearing shirts that read Stand to Protect Children on the front and Jesus Loves You (and so do I) on the back. They were met with vulgarity, assault and intimidation. The media has taken one side of the story. In this episode Jimmy recalls the events of that day. Who's Jimmy Graham? Riding Shotgun With Charlie #180 The DCP Gals & GOAL On August 27, Gun Owners Action League hosted an event called The 2A Freedom Celebration. They pulled in some names you've seen on RSWC. Amanda Suffecool (#009), Holly Sullivan (#036), Jared Yanis (#051). And some locals like Toby Leary, (#143) Kerrie Ann Auclair (#139). We were able to film a show with a few of the local DCP gals, Moe Palmer & Bonnie Marshall. Mike Harris, Director of Public Policy, also joined us. Yeah… it was a car full of teal shirts! There were several folks that sent some love GOAL's way. Todd Eccles from Patriot Defense Podcast, Nikki Goeser, Michael Sodini, David Coy, Klint Macro, John Petrolino, and the closing video was Cam Edwards. Of course Jim Wallace spoke, Jon Green (#030 & #034), Mike & Angi gave away a couple rifles. And Garet & Jeff from the GOAL Podcast (#177) were there as well. It was really a great time. Lots of fun catching up with everyone. I've said for a long time, these kinds of events are family get-togethers. We gave everyone the hot shotgun seat for today's show. Starting with Kerrie Ann, she doesn't get into Boston often so she was excited to see so much. We talked about the Gun Law Listening Tour and how it turned into HD.4420. But she talked about going to one of the stops and speaking with a woman who said she knew she would be dead if she tried to use a gun against her domestic abuser. Kerrie Ann helped her re-think if she had a gun and some training, the gun could have been an equalizer. Mike Harris talked about his time working in the State House in Boston and learning the ropes there. But he also acted as a tour guide. He does know a bit of Boston history and how to get around BeanTown. Holly Sullivan took the next spotlight. She brought up that the GOAL event is the kind of event where the states need to get together and have a conversation about what is working and what isn't. This is one of the things she really wants to work on and connect state groups so we can be just as organized as the antis. Bonnie Marshall has only been shooting for a few years. She's become a Range Safety Officer and started helping Kerrie Ann with her other group, The Well Armed Woman. It was great to have Bonnie break out of her shell and join us for the fun adventure. Moe Palmer is also a local Quincy MA gal. She's also an RSO working with some local instructors to run the shooting line at live fire courses. Moe reached out to me a few years ago. We took a road trip to SIG Academy in 2022 when they opened. She's also a regular on the Patriot Defense Podcast with Todd Eccles. And our closer is Amanda Suffecool. DC Project Advisor. NRA BOD member. Host of Eye On The Target Radio. Instructor. And my conscience. Amanda was great at the event. She talked about how GOAL is winning even though it feels like we may not be all the time. She had a busy week. She was in Nashville on Monday with the DCP. She met with Shelley Hill from The Complete Combatant in Georgia. Then she headed to Boston for the weekend. The following week, she headed to Dallas for NRA BOD meetings. We stopped for selfies, got sidetracked, and saw some sights in Boston. Like Cheers, The Granary Burial Ground, The Old State House & where the Boston Massacre started. Kenmore Square and drove next to Fenway Park, followed by going down Boylston Street, where the Marathon bombings happened and finally up Newbury Street. Yeah…it was an undertaking editing this beast with 6 cameras all together. Some of the batteries ran out, but we did the best we could. This is a long show, the longest I've done. But I wanted everyone to get some time Riding Shotgun. Favorite quotes: Kerrie Ann: “If you had a gun it creates an equalizer for someone that's 5'1”.” Mike: “The unintended consequences of that (covid) a lot of people were more activated so it's easier to get people focused on this bill (HD.4420)” Holly: “In such tiny states in New England, non-resident permits make life accessible.” Bonnie: “It's a bunch of like minded people, really fun.” Moe: “I didn't know there was a community out there. I didn't realize it was a passion.” Amanda: “It's great when your life comes together and you have a mission that will make a difference and leave a legacy.” The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/ Gun Owners Action League https://goal.org/ Connecticut Citizens Defense League https://www.ccdl.us/ Eye On The Target Radio https://eyeonthetargetradio.com/ Sisters In Arms- A Firearms Story https://www.youtube.com/@SIA-AFirearmStory Armed Women of America https://armedwomen.org/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court, Louis J. Perret, has served our community for 23 years, having been elected to serve on November 20, 1999. The clerk's office has over 8,000 vintage photos of Lafayette Parish's history, with approximately 3000 on display. Prior to his election as Clerk of Court, Perret served as District Director of the 7th Congressional District for Congressmen Jimmy Hayes and Chris John. (1986-1999) Perret served as co-chair of the Lafayette Bush/Cheney campaign in 2000. He served as an alternate delegate for George W. Bush at the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. Perret serves on the Board of Directors of Louisiana Capital (Small Business Lender) and has served since 2011 as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Regional Health System of Acadiana, which includes Women's & Children's Hospital and the Regional Medical Center Hospital. This episode was recorded days after the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Jimmy and Jason Campbell, Able Shepherd #86, discuss what has to change in this world to create a safer place to raise our kids. Able Shepherd is a program that produces a capability that is repeatable to a standard. Meaning as you test out of each phase you are building upon fundamentals that will need to be repeated over and over and to a standard of qualification. Jimmy and Jason do NOT believe their answers are the ONLY solution. But through the training done in the program it is a solution that can yield results and save lives. Who's Jimmy Graham? The Book with Special Guest Tyler Weinischke Tyler Weinischke is in the Able Shepherd program and is working with Jimmy as an editor compiling and organizing Jimmy's voice and written notes resulting in the development of Jimmy's first book. In this podcast Jimmy and Tyler discuss the process and the vision and heart behind the book. The question is asked, What is A Man's Man? What is your response? The question has no easy answer anymore and it's vital we take the time to ponder and figure out a response. As the very fabric which our country was built upon is ripped apart. As Jimmy says we are building higher and higher while simultaneously chipping at the foundation. That is not a sustainable path forward in fact it's the exact opposite and will yield unfortunate results. Who's Jimmy Graham? Day 2 – 7:30 a.m. I didn't cry this time. I drove the scenic route to Frogbones with dry eyes. There was a little knot in my stomach. Just 24 hours later, I pulled into the same parking spot. It's amazing how different this spot felt today. Today wasn't so much about pulling the trigger as it was, the sound of a gunshot and feeling the recoil. I could feel the tears. Like a puddle on my lower lid. I was thinking if I just keep my head straight the puddle would remain there and not start running down my cheeks. Freddie saw it. He looked at me and said, “look. You are safe. I won't let anyone hurt you.” How do I describe how those words made me feel? During the events of the robbery, there was no one there to tell me that. No one to make me believe that or even feel that, It was my job to make others feel safe. Follow me as I continue my journey of learning how to overcome my fear of using a firearm. It's the continuation of episode 9. In addition, meet Ethan the GM of FrogBones and Freddie the Range Safety Officer and private trainer who helped me learn the fundamental of safely using a gun. Tom Nguyen bought his first gun intentionally to take his own life with it. In this episode we discuss masculinity, race relations, liberalism and conservatism, and a few other subjects.Tom is a Liberal Gun Club certified Instructor, NRA certified Instructor & Range Safety Officer, and National African American Gun Association member. He offers private & group lessons at various locations throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. As a refugee who fled a war, Tom understands that guns can be triggering and have traumatic associations in many BIPOC communities. He had to overcome his immigrant parents’ fear of guns to fulfill his childhood dreams of owning and shooting firearms. After witnessing a gun homicide in his 20s, he started taking his shooting and training seriously, from handguns to rifles and shotguns.Upon seeing scores of new gun owners who would've never considered firearms before the pandemic and civil unrest, he founded L.A. Progressive Shooters in 2020 as a non-intimidating and inclusive community, focused on safety and education, for BIPOC and liberals new to firearms. When Tom isn’t teaching or shooting, he documents LA’s multicultural music & dance scene at EnClave.LA.

Each time you handle your firearm and ammunition, you immediately become your own Range Safety Officer. This means you are responsible for your actions, your equipment, your safety, and the safety of those around you. It is important to know what to look for before, during, and after a day of shooting at the range or in the field. You need to know who and what a Range Safety Officer (RSO) is, the RSO commands, how to react to those commands, and common gun range terminology. This will ensure a safe and enjoyable day at the range and in the field.

The Self-Initiative Project, Podcast 19, On Being a Range Safety Officer I welcome back my brother-from-another-mother, Denis Haynes, to the podcast to talk about what it is like to be a Range Safety Officer. We covered gun safety in our very first podcast and again when we did Part 2. Now, Denis and I are back together again to discuss what an RSO is, their responsibilities, how gun safety fits in, a couple of stories from the trenches, and several of our take-aways after having worked as volunteer RSOs. When we are at the range shooting, we can all be an RSO with an eye towards keeping ourselves and others around us as safe as possible. Be sure to tell your friends and family about us! Sit back. Relax. And listen.
The aim of this conversation was truly to understand the nuts and bolts of selecting and carrying a concealed weapon with no glitz and glamour, just a man training for a few special occasions that he hopes he never has to show up for. Mickey has been studying and training in personal protection for most of his adult life. His content and videos of real-world principles and concepts concerning all things firearms is really what prompted this conversation. After really digging in, it became apparent that Mickey has really grown up into the realm of personal protection as a result of a number of tragedies and experiences with death that he had throughout his life. Everything from how to select your first weapon to ammo selection and holster preferences and how to tell if someone else is wearing a firearm is covered in this interview. Conversely, we go deep into a number of different topics that are not firearms related but have to do with various other governing principles of personal protection as well. Enjoy! Owner and Instructor Mickey Schuch is a firearm instructor, for Pistol, Rifle, Shotguns, Personal Protection Inside the Home and Personal Protection Outside the Home, a Range Safety Officer and a member of Illinois Tactical Officers Association. He is a graduate of Massad Ayoob Group, Midwest Training Group, Tac Med Essentials, as well as many others. Personally, he attends over 160 hours of training per year as a student in courses covering topics such as battlefield medicine to a long-range precision rifle with some of the best and brightest instructors in the world. Mickey is also the President of a not-for-profit, McHenry County Right to Carry Association, a group that is dedicated to effecting change in the legislation pertaining to self-defense, 2nd amendment freedoms and to educating the public on self-defense laws and best practices. The organization was instrumental in the fight to win back rights in Illinois for carrying firearms. He spends most of his days either conducting live fire training or working to promote and protect second amendment rights. At night you can find him at home running dry-fire drills with his kids or smoking some pork in the back yard.
