Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. One of the most in demand blues / rock guitarists in the world is a mysterious character who goes by the name of G.E. Smith. Millions of TV viewers know his face-and the shock of unruly blond ponytail that was always falling across it-from his tenure stint of fronting the Saturday Night Live Band. Smith was hired to play lead guitar for Hall and Oates, he stayed for six years (1979-1985) constantly touring and recording with them, racking up hit after hit. Smith toured for almost four years with the legendary Bob Dylan. Smith was also honored to be the musical director for special events such as the 1988 Emmy Awards, the 1993 Rhythm and Blues Foundation Awards and the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden. The latter event was another of those “fantasy situations” that G.E. keeps getting involved in. “The rehearsals for that Dylan concert you wouldn't believe. I was rehearsing with George Harrison in the morning, Eric Clapton in the afternoon, and Lou Reed at night. One afternoon, rehearsing the finale, I had Harrison, Tom Petty, Clapton, Neil Young, Dylan and Roger McGuinn all lined up. GE also joined Roger Waters 2010 WALL LIVE toured the world three times and toured with him for seven years. In 2015, GE returned to SNL where he received an EMMY award as bandleader, for the 40th SNL anniversary special. In 2015, GE and wife, Taylor Barton, started an exciting project called PORTRAITS, which hosts a rotating roster of acclaimed musicians and artists from all realms for a deeper look at what drives them creatively. It's been a hot minute since our last Circuit & Anthems set and for a good reason. Party Favorz was doling out a marathon of gay anthem classics that 1) there wasn't enough time to complete a circuit set for Pride and 2) there weren't enough worthy new tracks to compile a Pride set. The good news is that good things come to those who wait. Summer Edition 2022 features the cream of the crop in circuit anthems for your summer workouts and/or pure enjoyment. This one is for the boys that enjoy that big room tribal sound with progressive elements sprinkled throughout. Speaking of progressive elements — Mor Avrahami has been on a roll with his releases. It's always good to mix these sets up and Avrahami in the vein of Offer Nissim and Yinon Yahel — has been churning out the goods one right after another. Don't be surprised that he shows up here quite a bit. Just know that some of his great releases had to be cut out to keep this set tight. I also want to point out that "Daddy" by Sleepsleep & Tahlia Paris takes on a new life once Jace M & Toy Armada got their hands on the song. They've sampled the disco classic "Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman. To my knowledge, this song has never been sampled before because it doesn't lend itself to a specific hook. It's one of those epic disco classics that starts with a prelude and three minutes later veers into the actual song. In this case, neither has any association with the other but merely connects the two parts. Jace and Toy sampled the prelude for the basis of "Daddy" turning the darker original into a fun tribal-disco romp that's bound to pack floors around the world. I don't think most DJs would have thought to sample that aspect of the song because it's just okay but damn if it doesn't work so well here. There's a lot to get excited about in this latest release but I'll let the music do the talking. I should be back next week with our Summer Melt series featuring the latest Dance Club hits and club tracks heating up dancefloors. Until the next time...ENJOY! It's about time! A little more so than usual on this month's live show, as we weigh up the pros and cons of time-wimey classics Day of the Daleks and The Girl in the Fireplace, before going deep on heavyweight Time Lord brawler The Invasion of Time. Along the way we discuss the Doctor's drinking habits, whether Milton Johns minded being typecast, speculate on whether Steven Moffat took inspiration from the Crystal Maze, and have a pretty spectacular dust-up over one of the three stories (you'll have to listen to find out which). If you like the show, please rate and review us on Apple Podcasts, or tell your friends! And don't forget to join us for the next live show on Tuesday 27th April at 8pm (BST / UK time) where we'll be taking on Trial of a Time Lord in its entirety...

Football Cliches - A show about the unique language of football

The Athletic's Adam Hurrey, Charlie Eccleshare and Amitai Winehouse examine the art of co-commentary, from the relaxing chattiness of Ally McCoist to the A-list authority of Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher — and why "Relight My Fire" by Take That (feat. Lulu) is an unlikely but perfect showcase of why we need co-commentators. They also discuss some not-quite-so-seamless Match of the Day commentary editing and why the proposal to start clapping referees out on to the pitch may be one of the worst ideas in football history. Lulu Kennedy-Cairns, best known as Lulu, is a Scottish singer, actress, television personality and businesswoman. She is noted for her powerful singing voice. She is internationally known, but especially by UK audiences in the 1960s. Later in her career she had hits internationally with "To Sir with Love" from the 1967 film of the same name and with the title song to the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. In European countries, she is also widely known for her Eurovision Song Contest 1969 winning entry "Boom Bang-a-Bang", and in the UK for her 1964 hit "Shout", which was performed at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.Lulu was born in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, and grew up in Dennistoun, Glasgow, where she attended Thomson Street Primary School and Onslow Drive School. She lived in Gallowgate for a while before moving to Garfield Street, Dennistoun. At the age of 12 or 13, she and her manager approached a band called the Bellrocks seeking stage experience as a singer. She appeared with them every Saturday night: Alex Thomson, the group's bass player, has reported that even then her voice was remarkable. In 1964, under the wing of Marion Massey, she was signed to Decca Records. When she was only fifteen, her version of the Isley Brothers' "Shout", credited to 'Lulu & the Luvvers' and delivered in a raucous but mature voice, peaked at no. 7 on the UK charts. Massey guided her career for more than 25 years, for most of which time they were partners in business, and Massey's husband Mark produced some of Lulu's recordings. After the success of "Shout", Lulu's next charting single was "Leave A Little Love" in 1965, which returned her to the UK Top Ten. Her next record, "Try to Understand", made the Top 40.Later that year she guested on the cover version of the Dan Hartman song "Relight My Fire", with boy band Take That. The single reached no. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and Lulu appeared as Take That's supporting act on their 1994 tour. At this time she also appeared as an unhappy public relations client of Edina Monsoon in two episodes of the BBC television programme Absolutely Fabulous and teamed with French and Saunders many times, including their send up of the Spice Girls (the Sugar Lumps) for Comic Relief in 1997, when she took the role of "Baby Spice", mimicking Emma Bunton. Party For the Weeknd is rich in Funky House, NuDisco, and Soulful burners that will get you in the mood as temps begin to drop in your area. Andy Bach's "Systematic" kicks things off with a semi-familiar groove to many of you. The song is Toto's 1980 track from their 2nd album "99." While it wasn't a huge hit for them, the piano grooves are laid over a soothing house beat that will set you in the mood. This song had a few problems and I had to rebuild the intro because it was problematic. Nevertheless, I've gotten really good and reworked things to suit my needs. From there, the temp picks up as we dive into more familiar NuDisco territory that the Funky House series is known for. We also have some familiar classic remakes like "Caught In The Middle" originally performed by Juliet by Arduini & Pagany featuring Channelle with Eric Kupper doing the remix honors. Kim Cooper reprises her role as the ultimate diva in "Unique Diva" with Jamie Lewis and even pays homage to Peter Rauhofer who originally introduced us to the sultry singer back in the 90s under his Club 69 moniker. Also, Sound of Joy featuring Virag remakes the Geraldine Hunt disco classic "Can't Fake The Feeling" with grace and soul while (Seamus) Haji & Emanuel reprise the massive "Party For the Weekend" simply titled "Weekend." This track was originally performed by Soulseekerz but I'm fairly certain it's a remake of an even older track from the 90s but I can't quite figure it out. Maybe one of my followers knows. In the rework category, we have Los Amigos and Dimitri From Paris taking on the early 80's disco classic "Glad To Know You" by Chaz Jankel, Block & Crown featuring Kegyi remake of Michael Zager Band's 70's disco classic "Let's All Chant" with their take "Your Body." Finally, Jack's On delivers a faithful updated rendition of the massive disco classic "Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman and Loleatta Holloway with Richard Grey at the remix control board. This set also features three brand new Purple Disco Machine tracks with "Emotion," "Up & Down," and the just-released "Joys" by Roberto Surace, which are bound to be crowd-pleasers. It's a beautiful fall day in the ATL and Party Favorz is back with the finest Funky Disco House Shit this side of the galaxy. Party For the Weeknd is rich in Funky House, NuDisco, Soulful burners that will get you in the mood as temps begin to drop in your area. Andy Bach's "Systematic" kicks things off with a semi-familiar groove to many of you. The song is basically Toto's 1980 track from their 2nd album "99." While it wasn't a huge hit for them, the piano grooves are laid over a soothing house beat that will set you in the mood. This song had a few problems and I had to rebuild the intro because it really was problematic. Nevertheless, I've gotten really good and reworking things to suit my needs. From there, the temp really picks up as we dive into more familiar NuDisco territory that the Funky House series is known for. We also have some familiar classic remakes like "Caught In The Middle" originally performed by Juliet by Arduini & Pagany featuring Channelle with Eric Kupper doing the remix honors. Kim Cooper reprises her role as the ultimate diva in "Unique Diva" with Jamie Lewis and even pays homage to Peter Rauhofer who originally introduced us to the sultry singer back in the 90's under his Club 69 moniker. Also, Sound of Joy featuring Virag remakes the Geraldine Hunt disco classic "Can't Fake The Feeling" with grace and soul while (Seamus) Haji & Emanuel reprise the massive "Party For the Weekend" simply titled "Weekend." This track was originally performed by Soulseekerz but I'm fairly certain it's a remake of an even older track from the 90's but I can't quite figure it out. Maybe one of my followers knows. In the rework category, we have Los Amigos and Dimitri From Paris taking on the early 80's disco classic "Glad To Know You" by Chaz Jankel, Block & Crown featuring Kegyi remake Michael Zager Band's 70's disco classic "Let's All Chant" with their own take "Your Body." Finally, Jack's On delivers a faithfull updated rendition of the massive disco classic "Relight My Fire" by Dan Hartman and Loleatta Holloway with Richard Grey at the remix control board. This set also features three brand new Purple Disco Machine tracks with "Emotion," "Up & Down," and the just-released "Joys" by Roberto Surace, which are bound to be crowd-pleasers. Other important tracks are "Don't Wanna Dance" by Boston Bun, "Heaven" by The Vision featuring Andreya Triana, "Falling Deep In Love" by Horse Meat Disco & Kathy Sledge (of Sister Sledge fame) and anything by Joey Negro who is a personal favorite of Party Favorz and is deserving of his own Legacy entry sometime this year. Finally, Roisin Murphy is back with the funky "Incapable" remixed by Dimitri From Paris who gives it a Stock Aitken Watermen 80's treatment that you'll gleefully find yourself dancing along to. If it sounds like I'm overly excited about this set — it's because I am. It's been finished since Monday and I was just waiting on the advance of the Purple Disco Machine remix of Roberto Surace track on Friday to finalize the set. Obviously, I've had it on heavy rotation all week. Of course, it helps that the weather has cooled down, which generally puts me in a better mood as Fall is my favorite time of the year. I plan on getting to work on the ultimate 80's Dance Mix that I've been promising and should start rolling those out by mid-week. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend and until the next time...ENJOY! For whatever reason, Podbean was not accepting my password — which had never been an issue. When I chose the "forgot password" option it never sent a link to my email to change it. It's literally taken over 24 hours to have them fix what was clearly an issue with their system because I was still receiving other notifications from them about new users and unsubscribed users. What a headache. They finally got it fixed. Better late than never I suppose.  Album: Party For The Weekend Genre: House Music, Funky House,

Joey Negro is the most well-known pseudonym of master British DJ/producer/remixer Dave Lee. Under a plethora of other monikers including Akabu, Doug Willis, The Sunburst Band, Jakatta, Raven Maize, Sessomatto, and Z Factor, Dave was one of the first artists to incorporate disco samples in house music when he began his production career in 1988. Indeed, he was in the studio making credible British House music when many luminaries around him were still busy getting to grips with their decks. Little has changed since then and Dave is still widely regarded as one of the forefathers of the UK dance scene who is still as productive as ever in the studio and behind the decks most weekends. A producer first, his work ethic is legendry, having been involved in well over 300 productions, countless albums and a healthy stack of pop crossover hit singles with tracks such as ‘Must Be The Music’, ‘Make A Move On Me’ and Jakatta’s ‘American Dream” making the UK Top 10. Dave has also been commissioned to remix the likes of Kelly Rowland, Empire of the Sun, Mariah Carey, Labrynth, Pet Shop Boys, Diana Ross and many many more. He also conceived and produced the UK number 1 “Relight My Fire” by Take That. However, despite the crossover successes the majority of Dave’s productions have had the heart in underground clubland – with releases on many seminal house music labels – Transmat, Nu Groove, Quark, JBO, Azuli, Deconstruction Guidance & NRK. Intrinsically linked with the birth of house in the UK, Dave Lee set up the dance music division of Rough Trade, Demix in 1986 and through this link, he began working with the Rhythm King label, which had had a number of hits with acts like Bomb The Bass, S-Express, Cookie Crew and Beatmasters. This experience and intimacy with other leading house labels led to him establishing his own imprint, Republic Records, in 1988. Now defunct, Republic was one of the UK’s first soulful house label releasing classics such as Phase II “Reachin” and Turntable Orchestra “You’re Gonna Miss Me” - as well as some early productions of his own like Raven Maize “Forever Together” Joey Negro, as an entity, was born in 1990 with the release of “Do It Believe It’ on US cult house label Nu Groove. When struggling for an act name Dave flicked through a pile of records next to his desk and ending up putting together Pal Joey and J Walter Negro - “I thought it sounded like a cool hispanic New York guy, I certainly never envisaged I’d be answering to the name Joey 25 years later”. The track was a breakthrough success and was followed by ‘Do What You Feel’, which was released on his second label and successor to Republic, Z Records. ‘Do What You Feel’ eventually crossed from a club hit to a top 40 pop hit on Virgin Records. Another Top 40 track followed with “Love Fantasy” and an album “Universe of Love” with guest appearances from disco acts The Trammps and Gwen Gutherie. Throughout the 90/00’s Dave delivered a constant stream of productions and remixes with tracks like his “Can’t Get High Without U” and Z Factor “Gotta Keep Pushin” (used as the theme for Ibiza Uncovered) becoming anthems on the dancefloor. These days his label ZR is not only a vehicle for him to release his own music but has become a very cool brand featuring productions and remixes from both cutting edge and established producers like Dennis Ferrer, Jimpster, Henrik Schwarz, The Revenge and Frankie Knuckles. Dave’s work producing live disco act The Sunburst Band has been the source of much praise and adoration. Their fourth album ‘The Secret Life of Us’ from 2012 was yet another power house of all things soul, jazz, and funk featuring a host of live musicians and vocalists has been widely regarded as the strongest Sunburst album yet. The LP topped the Solar Sweet rhythms for over 2 months (a record), Starpoint Soul chart, Amazon Funk chart and has received across the board props. The band continue to tour around the world on a regular basis. Dave has remained an avid vinyl collector and has put together many genre defining compilations – ‘Disco (Not Disco)’ (Strut), ‘Joey Negro In The House’ (Defected), ‘Disco Spectrum’ Vol.1–3 (BBE), ‘Jumpin’ 1& 2 (Harmless), Southport Weekender Volume 1, ‘Nite:Life’ and ‘Back In The Box’ (NRK) ‘The Trip’ (Family Records) ‘The Voyage – Excursions into Early House’ (X Treme) & ‘Lust: Art & Soul’ (Susu). Whilst on ZR he’s compiled ‘Destination Boogie’, ‘Locked In The Vinyl Cellar’, ‘Supafunkanova’ ‘The Soul of Disco’ (Vol.1-3), ‘Back Street Brit Funk’ and the latest labour of love ‘GoGo Get Down’ that focused on Washington DC GoGo funk, all of which continue to further cement him as one of the UK’s foremost musical authorities. Not wanting to hog all the limelight, Dave has started the ‘Under The Influence’ series on ZR which gives a platform to some of the worlds most serious record collectors – unknown names who’ve spent their lives collecting music and have the knowledge to put together a wicked selection on previously unheard music. His discography is undoubtedly impressive and his deep understanding as a selector of all things disco and house on the dancefloor have ensured his status on the global DJ circuit worldwide to this day. Joey Negro's dj sets reflect his extensive love of music ranging from rare disco through to vocal and classic house and often into more deep, electronic and techy areas, his sets littered with exclusives, old and new. Where as many producers from his era have tended to ease off on the studio work Mr Lee keeps turning out the club hits, evident in 2012 when he had 5 releases in the Traxsource end of year top 100. 2013 saw his long awaited compilation ‘Remixed With Love’ hit the stores. Packed with brand new remixes of classic disco tracks all reworked from original 24 track tapes and including artists such as Roxy Music, Patrice Rushen & Roy Ayers, the album topped sales charts on Amazon and Juno and stayed at No.1 on Traxsource for 4 months. His Akabu track "Everybody Wants Something" also featured in many end of year ‘best of’ charts. Joey has kept the pressure on in 2014 with singles under his Z Factor, Doug Willis and Sunburst Band aliases plus remixes for Zo! and Tramhead. He also put together and released a universally applauded Italo House album which dug deep into house history delivering some forgotten gems that still sound great today. Looking forward to next year there are already three albums lined up - Supafunkanova Volume 2, Remixed With Love Vol. 2 and a stunning compilation of 90s House and Garage. Also look out for a new artist album from Joey Negro coming soon... For all booking enquiries please email simon AT zrecords DOT ltd DOT uk

In the mid-70s, Blanche Napoleon impulsively moved to NYC and befriended the excellent singer-songwriter Dan Hartman. Their deep friendship carried on until his death from AIDS in 1993. In this conversation, not only do we honor Dan and his life and art, but we talk about Blanche's brief. but impactful career in the music business in the late 70s before she transitioned to a hugely successful career in the fashion industry. The summer is upon us and there is no greater way to spend an afternoon than on the beach enjoying your friends and loved ones. When you include an event that totally encapsulates that day, the right music, special things happen. You make new friends. You have more reasons to smile and feel your blessings versus counting them. Then there's the DJ giving everything he's got to create those magical memories that stay with you forever. As I put my heart into this I thought SOUVENIRS FROM THE SUN was the perfect name for this SANDBLAST event. The titles I chose for this podcast come from what inspires me most about music, messages. I am sending messages through songs I've written and produced along with songs, tracks and remixes by artist and talent that I have such great respect for. Among the many familiar and classic tracks, I have created and added new tracks that I hope will join the classics ranks. I send a very special thank you to Deborah Cox, who is an incredible collaborator and friend. Together, we have gone into the studio again to create one of my proudest works yet titled, "A New Life". This new work was inspired by one of the many hit songs from the musical JECKYL AND HYDE. It's premier is happening on this podcast FOR YOU! When it is released. please show your love and support. Also, a special thanks to Joe Gautheraux who came to me with and idea about the classic song "Souvenirs" by Voyage. I brought the incredible Michelle Weeks in to put that diva touch to it and you are hearing Stage 1 of the future hit anthem Let's Find A Place". You can also hear for the first time a song that I wrote with an incredible songwriter, Phil Galston who wrote "Save The Best For Last" for Vanessa Williams. Phil and I came up with an emotional musical piece titled , "Where The Sky Meets The Sea". I would love to hear your feedback about this. AND BIG NEWS!…We have just released a new video on Sugar House Music to my new single with Deborah Cooper, "Heartbeat". I cannot tell you how happy I am with it's performance on the charts and dance floor! Here is the link - please check it out! https://vimeo.com/67777284 Sandblast is going to be amazing and I wait to see so many there. For those of who can't, I share a piece of my heart and leave this continuos mix to make that journey as well in spirit for you.
