Summary: As fraud crimes become more prevalent, it's crucial to adapt and have a strategy in place to protect all of your assets. Cyber security expert Robert Siciliano comes on the show to talk about how you can stay protected and why you should—explaining how it's one of the simplest and smarted decisions you can make. Security measures are not for the paranoid; rather, simple security systems allow any person to be a more difficult target, and to maintain an attitude of vigilance and determination. Robert talks about options for home security and the variety of cameras and products available based on your preferences. We also discuss financial asset protection, and Robert names some free tools that can assist you in protecting your credit and identity. Tune in for more information about how to stay secure. Summary: If given the choice, why wouldn't you reduce the risk of your home getting broken into? Thankfully, you DO have the choice, and Robert Siciliano comes on the show to talk about how this type of risk reduction is massively underutilized. We live in a society where people are preoccupied with information security measures, and yet, these same people neglect to install security systems in their own homes. These extra measures are not synonymous with paranoia; rather, they instill preparation for the criminal activity that can occur anywhere—no matter how safe you perceive your neighborhood to be. Tune in to hear more about why home security is especially important now, and to learn about how you can start taking extra measures. Highlights: -We're in a post-pandemic inflationary environment. How do you survive and thrive in this world? -Lots of people are resorting to violence and theft. Throughout the pandemic we've seen increases in substance abuse, domestic violence, and more division than we've ever seen -There has been an increase in crime all across the board -Taking extra security measures is especially important right now -Security begins with the person; you need to understand personal security practices -15-20 million homes are going to be burglarized in the next decade -Most people don't have a home security system because they believe they live in a “safe neighborhood.” Safe is an absolute; there is no such thing as a 100% safe neighborhood -Crime may be less frequent in certain locations, but it still occurs -People often perceive those that engage in extra security practices as paranoid -Most people are in denial about the level of risk they expose themselves to -It's crucial to understand your risk and put various levels of security in place. When you do this, you are a much more difficult target -We know that the “it can't happen to me” mentality is unrealistic, and this is why we take precautions in everyday life (i.e. putting on a seatbelt in a motor vehicle) -The people that are preoccupied with information security are the same individuals that don't have home security systems -If you could cut your odds of being burglarized, why wouldn't you? -Security is ongoing, and it is a process you need to be engaged in -As humans, we trust by default, and this trust is necessary for our society to function. But it is important to recognize risk Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Protect Now

Summary: If your business operates on a web platform, it is crucial to possess a thorough understanding and appreciation of cybersecurity; this is a practice that can either make or break your business. Today I speak with bestselling author Robert Siciliano about the precautions one can take to evade cyberattacks and identity theft, which are incredibly common in the digital realm of business. Proper cybersecurity and a knowledge of how to deal with attacks/attempted attacks can save you and your business a load of trouble in the long run. Tune in to find out more. Highlights: -It is important to know what precautions to take to avoid identity theft -Bestselling author Robert Siciliano tells us that ransomware is an epidemic: it affects healthcare, manufacturing, etc. -Businesses are paying millions of dollars in ransom -The bad guys have gotten very skilled in what they do, especially in terms of organization. They function as legitimate businesses. Team members are able to get access to usernames and passwords, and get people to click links so that they can operate from the inside -They gain access to the insides of networks and then stop these networks from functioning -Insurance companies end up paying for this ransom -Everyone needs proper security awareness/appreciation training -Cybersecurity insurance is the fastest growing sector of insurance -Any computer with valuable data should have at least two backups Useful Links: Safr.me Financial Survival Network
PSCU called it a growing credit union threat. CUNA Mutual called it one of the fastest growing malware threats. Security company Arctic Wolf has said there was a 520% increase in ransomware and phishing attacks in the banking sector between March and June 2020. NCUA has even issued a punchlist of steps to take to protect against ransomware attacks.Color me surprised. I had thought ransomware - where hackers "lock" a site or a database and demand a ransom to unlock it - was a thing of the past. Data redundancy in the cloud had eliminated the threat, I thought.I was wrong.Crooks are nimble and in today's iteration of ransomware, yes, the site still is locked - but before that happens the crook makes a point to copy key files. Tell the crooks you won't play ball, or simply ignore their demands, and they up the ante by posting a sample of their data theft on publicly viewable sites. Imagine if the Social Security numbers of 10,000 of your members suddenly sprout up online. How ugly is that?Would you pay to avoid that?Crooks also know that increasing numbers of credit unions have what amounts to ransomware insurance coverage and they also know how much the insurers will pay.Don't underestimate them. Brilliant hackers they are not necessarily - some in fact simply use ransomware kits they buy online - but here is what it takes to defeat them: recognizing that security is a 24/7, 365 days a year job, says Robert Siciliano, a longtime cybersecurity expert who works with many organizations to help them raise their defenses. It is not being paranoid, believing we are under continuing attacks, insists Siciliano in this podcast. It is just being prudentThis is not a podcast overloaded with technical jargon. What it is is a podcast intended to light a fire under all of us because we need that zeal if we intend to win, says Siciliano.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Noted cyber security expert Robert Siciliano observes that within several years cybercrime will be the third largest business on the planet. The current pandemic has only upped the stakes. It doesn't matter if you're a nanny or a police officer, you're still a potential target. And just like the current pandemic, It's not like the government is going to save you. There's just too many cases and not enough cops. That means that it's up to you to become aware, start changing your passwords and be aware that you're a potential target. Make those passwords long and complicated and maybe then you'll stand a chance.

Computer security is no laughing matter. Recently I was at a dentist's office and they were still using computers running Windows XP, a 20 year old operating system with virtually no built-in security. That office's network and computers were a sitting duck. Recently a city in Palm Beach County was hacked and their computers were locked up with Ransomware. They paid $600,000 to free them up. Robert says every company should hire a hacker to breach their computers and evaluate their security. It will be far cheaper in the long run.

And, as the picture shows, more from Long Haul Paul Marhoefer from the stage at the Key Palace Theater in Redkey, Ind., this past Feb. 2. Otherwise, this edition of Overdrive Radio takes aim at combating increasingly proliferating online scams. High degrees of situational awareness are your best tools, says Safr.me consultant and author Robert Siciliano, who speaks here. Some such cases have seen the light of day at OverdriveOnline.com, including the recent dramatic and expensive tale of a Georgia trucker catfished by a fake online romantic relationship and tricked into wiring more than $25 grand to the other party. Fall for such a scam once, too, and you're now on a "sucker list" maintained by what's increasingly resembling something of an online-scam industrial complex. "They will work you to the end of your days," says Siciliano, who has a particular expertise in the online scam arena. He's the CEO of the non-profit personal security education site, and also a private investigator. He regularly consults with Fortune 500 companies about privacy and security and you might recognize his voice from interviews in major media outlets tapping his expertise in just how people can protect themselves in their online interactions. Overdrive Senior Editor James Jaillet and Contributing Editor Carolyn Mason talked with Siciliano about increasing your own awareness of how these scams play out to most effectively prevent them.

Noted credit expert Robert Siciliano joined us today. The good news is that all 4 credit bureaus must provide now allow consumer's to freeze their reports upon demand. The bad news is that there are now 4 credit bureaus and most people don't take advantage of this security measure anyway. You need to shred all your mail and let your password manager assign your passwords. Allow for push notifications on all your credit cards. This will enable you to pick up on any fraudulent use in near real time. This can help keep you safe. But there's so much more to data hacking and illicit data sales. You can only do so much and then it's up to the government and fate.

Noted identity theft expert and bestselling author Robert Siciliano joined us to discuss the Identity Theft Epidemic. Christmas Time is notorious for all sorts of scams. With the advent of chipped credit and debit cards, new scams have been created to take advantage of the consumer confusion created by this technology. Beware of banks calling you to discuss your new card. It's an opening to get your private info. Also beware of phony websites for charities and retailers, created just for the purpose of stealing your data. Awareness is the key to keeping you and your data safe this holiday season.

September is National Preparedness Month. It's a great time to create your Digital Disaster Recovery Plan, if you haven't already. Remember Hurricane Katrina? People still haven't learned the lessons of that disaster. Be certain to backup your devices early and often. Also, use a remote backup service so you can restore vital files if your devices are destroyed, lost or stolen. The key is to learn from the past tragedies so you're covered if and when the inevitable should occur. Often the investments are small and even when they're more costly, just think about the cost of losing all your vital data and the decision will be easy.
My guest today is personal security expert and identity theft speaker Robert Siciliano. His 30 years of experience and expertise in all aspects of security have gained him audiences across a wide variety of media. Mr. Siciliano’s credentials include hard-hitting and provocative contributions to TIME, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Reader’s Digest and Consumers Digest. He is a regular contributor to Entrepreneur and has appeared as a guest commentator on The Anderson Cooper Show, John Stossel, The Steve Harvey Show, The Today Show, CBS Early Show, Good Morning America, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, Inside Edition and Extra among others. His clients include GMAC, The National Association of Realtors, Domino’s Pizza, United Bankers Bank, Exxon Mobile and many more. Siciliano’s goal is simple – to wake up and empower people throughout the world so they can avoid becoming victims. Personal Security: Personal security includes the physical security of your person, your family and your home. It also includes information security which involves protecting your identity, data and devices. Is this just paranoia? Paranoia is the opposite of what Robert does or teaches. Paranoia is a form of mental illness. People who are paranoid are out of control, disconnected and overwhelmed every moment of the day. What Robert teaches causes people to feel a tremendous amount of control. It allows them to feel grounded and connected to their world. Once you understand personal security and how it works it’s like riding a bike. Once you achieve that balance you’ll know how to ride it forever effortlessly. It’s the same for personal security once you understand what your options are and put those systems into place. SEO and SEM: SEO is search engine optimization. SEM is search engine marketing. They work hand in hand to get your brand front and center. It should be the goal of anyone selling anything to show up on the first page of the search engine. Top three tips for pitching the media and getting their attention: 1. Pitch something relevant that’s current and timely. It’s not so much about you as it is what you can provide them. They are looking for something a little bit different. After the Ashley Madison breech a lot of data security experts got called. Robert is a data security expert too but he also talked to the victims and was able to share what they told him and the advice he gave them. Whatever your pitching the media on especially if it’s a breaking news story see if you can find a layer to explore that would really be yours and set you apart from everybody else. 2. Speak to something that falls into the realm of your expertise. If you’re an egg decorator you’re not going to find many media opportunities except at Easter. Search for places that eggs might be relevant at other times. On Halloween when kids throw eggs at houses you can talk about how eggs damage the siding on houses and how to get that off. Be an expert for crying out loud which means you devote a certain amount of time, energy and resources to learning around your core expertise so that you’re really an expert not just on your niche subject but outside of it as well. 3. Don’t spend even five minutes talking about something you’re not remotely an expert in or you’ll just come across as a fool. You’ll ruin your credibility and do more damage than good. Be available: When the media calls if you don’t answer the phone they will call somebody else. Tips for doing a brilliant interview: Get good at what you do, know your topic, become comfortable with your content and speak to the fundamentals. With every topic and issue there are fundamentals in regards to that particular topic. In episode 3 with Gerard Braud he talks about exactly how to do this step by step. · Robert’s advice on how to get out of the baby pool and into the ocean:Answer the phone. Robert says he is the only person he knows that has spoken to every major media naked! That is because he answers the phone wherever he is and whatever he’s doing! · You can visit Robert’s website at [www.robertsiciliano.com] or follow him on Twitter at @RobertSiciliano or @IDTheftExpert · Write headlines no journalist can resist, with the 58-headline template pack [http://babygotbooked.com/headlines]
No doubt you've heard about the recent breach of the Office of Personnel Management. Every Federal Employee's full personnel record has been hacked! The problem is that we've all been hacked. The question is what to do about it. According to Robert Siciliano, the nation's leading authority on identity theft, the best thing we can do is freeze our credit reports, lock down our computers, networks and digital devices and stay ever vigilant. Our data has been circulating for years and that's the untold truth. But if we take the necessary precautions we can limit the fallout. Being proactive and knowing your options are essential.” Siciliano's media credentials include hard-hitting and provocative contributions to TIME, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes, Fortune, BusinessWeek, Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Reader's Digest, Consumers Digest, as a regular contributor to Entrepreneur, and he has appeared as a guest commentator on The Anderson Cooper Show, John Stossel, The Steve Harvey Show, The Today Show, CBS Early Show, Good Morning America, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Fox News, Inside Edition, and Extra, among others. Siciliano's goal is simple – to wake up and empower people across Main Street USA and throughout the world so they can avoid becoming victims. His personal security and identity theft expertise is an asset to any program or organization that demands straight talk, common sense, and potentially life- and property-saving results right now. He motivates people everywhere to do the right things to keep their family, data and property safe. Audience members describe his credible, from-the-trenches advice as life-changing and lifesaving. At the corporate level, his clients include high-level executives from leading corporations such as McAfee, iovation, Intelius, ADT, Gemalto, RSA, BillGuard, Sentry Safe, Schlage, AllClearID and Uniball Corporation rely upon Siciliano's insights, perspectives and guidance to bring additional firepower and pro...
Identity theft can wreck your life and your credit. Security expert Robert Siciliano joins us to discuss how to protect sensitive information. There are two main types of financial identity theft: new account fraud and account take over. New account fraud is when someone gets your social security number and starts opening new lines of credit in your name, credit cards, even car loans. You start getting calls from collection agencies wanting their money. Account takeover is the most common form of ID theft. This is when someone hacks your bank account or gets your credit card number. New account fraud is easier to prevent. Making sure your devices are protected from spyware and being careful where you give out personal information will go a long way in preventing it. Account takeover is harder to avoid. Every time you hand over your credit card to pay for something, it can be stolen. The best thing to do is to monitor your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions. There are new technologies coming that can help prevent ID theft. Chip and pin are long overdue in the States. It’s been standard in Europe for years. We will get it in October 2015. The magnetic strips will be replaced by the chip and pin which are harder to hack because the chipped data is encrypted. NFC technology is in the offing too. This is tap and pay or wave and pay technology. Apple Pay uses NFC. The best way to stay safe is to use multiple layers of protection. Use Mint, check your statements, some banks and credit card companies allow you to set your alerts to be notified of every transaction. Amex is the gold standard for this. You have sixty days to refute a charge on a credit card. You have two days to refute a fraudulent debit card charge. This is why we advocate always using a credit card rather than a debit card. If you use Cloud storage, Robert recommends mulit-factor authentication. Otherwise, all your naked pics will end up on Reddit, The Fappening II. Are you willing to risk it? Don’t use one password for more than one account. I know this is a pain in the ass but sorting out ID theft is worse. At least don’t do it for anything connected to your finances. Get a credit freeze. It locks down your credit report. In order to “thaw” your report, for legitimate applications for credit and loans you’ll receive a one time PIN. I’ve had both my checking account and a credit card hacked and it is annoying to have to sort out so get your security measures in place now.
