‘So really, the key difference with transcendental meditation is we're not trying to control the mind, or concentrate, or visualise or be mindful of our thoughts. And all these things activate the mind to some extent. And that's why if you've got a really busy mind or you're very anxious, it's really hard to do those techniques. Now an analogy that's often used when we talk about Transcendental Meditation is to think of the mind as being a bit like the ocean. We can have a lot of turbulence on the surface of the ocean, but if you dive down underneath there is complete stillness and silence. And that's the same with the mind.' ~ Wendy Rosenfeldt Wendy Rosenfeldt is a teacher of Transcendental Meditation (TM) and a Maharishi Ayurveda Practitioner. She has been teaching TM for over 20 years and is passionate about helping people to live their full potential by accessing the deepest levels of the mind and releasing the blocks caused by stress, tension, and past experiences. In this week's podcast, we dive deep into the understanding of the mind using the power of what it means to transcend and the importance of ayurvedic medicine. Wendy offers personalised health consultations that take into account your unique constitutional type and addresses imbalances through diet, daily routine, herbs and lifestyle changes. Wendy also conducts Women's health seminars that give you the tools to experience the changing cycle and rhythms in a woman's life naturally, without discomfort or emotional turmoil. Her definition of Self Love is self-realisation. Self-love, self-care is so important. How much we look after ourselves depends on how well we do life. It is not a selfish thing by any means. The more self-care the more you have to give in life. It is really care for the Universe and care for your connection to the Universe. Her favourite quote is from Maharishi: ‘The world is as we are.' How Repetition Rules Recovery OVERVIEW: "What we all want at the end of the day is better quality, fluid, coordinated movement. But sometimes we don't get there. I would suggest to therapists: Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good. We're not trying to make them perfect, we're just trying to get them better. And better is good. So sometimes the beauty is not in the beauty but in the ugliness of the movement. Let it be ugly. Let it be sweaty. Look— if you don't think that this has value, here's what you need to do: Go to a music store and get yourself a viola, and let me know how that doesn't sound like a dozen doing cats for the next six months. ‘Cause it's gonna! Take up golf! It's gonna be— it's not supposed to be beautiful. It's supposed to be ugly. You got to enjoy the stuff." EPISODE SUMMARY: This episode of NOGGINS & NEURONS: Stroke and TBI Recovery Simplified explains the importance of repetition for regaining movement. We talk about: Repetition and where it fits in the trifecta of brain rules What getting better means The number of repetitions required for a person to get better Variables that impact motor recovery, including survivors age, area and size of infarct, medication use, survivor motivation and movement intricacies Survivor and Clinician perceptions on intensity Importance of leadership in supporting new protocol and program development Pete and Deb discuss the real-world motor and physiological effects of stroke and how thoughts impact behaviors. Pete explains research that details the challenges around determining a specific number of repetitions survivors need to perform to get better. He stresses the importance of incorporating meaning into interventions. We found great research that looks at survivor and therapist perceptions around intensity that should help everyone feel more comfortable and confident in developing rehab programs with appropriate intensity levels that facilitate functional change.  As always, we want to hear your top takeaways! This week, Brooke is joined by return guest and permaculture expert, Robyn Rosenfeldt, for a fantastic conversation centred on the vital role of community in times of crisis.  Robyn talks about the devastation of the summer bushfires and how that crisis highlighted the issue of food security in her community, before sharing the similar impact the Covid-19 crisis is now having on local supermarket shelves.  In times of crisis there is a tendency to turn our attention to community, and Robyn and Brooke talk about the importance of being community-minded as an antidote to the challenges that face us now and that may await us in the future. Robyn shares the three pillars of permaculture - earth care, people care and a fair share - and speaks about what they look like in daily life, and how we can all harness them to create stronger communities. Brooke and Robyn also speak about the tricky business of living a values-aligned life while also raising independent-minded children, how to pick your battles and why compromise is an important tool.  Enjoy! Permaculture (it’s more than just gardening!) with Robyn Rosenfeldt

If you enjoy gardening (or perusing gardening photos on social media!!) permaculture is a term you may have heard bandied around. It’s most commonly attached the food production, and is a philosophy that results in better soil, better food production and higher yield. What is less often mentioned is that permaculture doesn’t stop at food production. In fact, much like slow living, the permaculture philosophy extends to community, connection, family, relationships, business and how we view the world at large. It can impact on where we live and how we live there, as well as the things we own, the money we earn and the way we interact with those around us. In today’s episode Brooke chats with Robyn Rosenfeldt, the founder and editor of Pip Magazine - a magazine dedicated to spreading the ideas of permaculture far and wide. Pip is released three times a year and is packed full of both inspirational articles that dive deep in to permaculture, as well as the super practical information that will help you turn that inspiration in to action. Brooke and Robyn chat about the similarities between slow living and permaculture, as well as self-sufficiency, and why permaculture isn’t necessarily going to allow us to be individually self-sufficient, but rather encourages the creation of self-sufficient communities. The conversation also looks at what community means and why we sometimes may need to look beyond our neighbourhood to find a tribe of like-minded people. Robyn has some fantastic suggestions for those of us who want to start on the path to permaculture but don’t have a lot of time, and one of those suggestions is to let go of perfection. Another of her other suggestions is to begin to educate ourselves on our food - where it comes from, what time of year we should be seeing it in supermarkets (and what times of year we shouldn’t - AHEM, nectarines in July!). It’s from this basis of knowledge that we can begin making small, consistent changes and from there springs real and lasting change.
