On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Ryan Margolin, CEO of Professional Hair Labs to talk about his journey to help create world-leading products in cosmetic bonding and international businesses.KEY TAKEAWAYSMy parents were both entrepreneurs running their own businesses, so I grew up well versed in business. Sadly, over years of using products in a hair replacement studio, my mother got chemical poisoning. She's OK, but it forced her to retire early which pushed my dad to sell the business and he focussed his attention on building a product line that was safe for technicians. Since then it's developed into a completely different business, but at its core that's where the foundations of the company was built.Historically, the industry has used the same products for the last 40-50 years. Now, all of a sudden, here's my dad and his company offering a new solution. The biggest hurdle was about education; why they should be using this product over the others. This required a high level of research and development and commitment to getting the product out there and validating it across industry, and we did that.By the time I came into the business the foundations had already been set by my dad's idea. He had a really good baseline product, but it was missing a couple of key components that we had always felt would be beneficial to a water-based adhesive. The problem was the technology didn't exist at the time. In 2009 we realised a company had created that technology, though it was patented and really expensive to buy, we started to reformulate our product with that ingredient which gave it its water and oil resistance. Within 18 months we'd tripled the revenue of the company.I felt I could now take this repeatable process and put it into any marketplace, so I moved back to Ireland and opened up and it fell flat on its face! I considered shutting it down. It was performing that bad, but stuck at it and we were able to build a couple of really good distribution relationships in Europe. What I realised was the difference between the US and Europe is the cultural approach of doing business and I had to adapt to that, go to trade shows and meet with a lot of high level hair suppliers who were really helpful. It was a year and a half before we had traction. That taught me that you need to research the marketplaces you want to expand into and learn how to do business internationally.BEST MOMENTS‘I had no intention of working in a family business, I wanted to do my own thing. But naturally opportunity aligned back in 2008 with the economic crash.'‘I don't tend to moan about anything because ultimately what does it achieve? If there's a problem, there's a solution, so you can moan about it or you can get on and fix it. That's typically my mindset.'‘It's all about what you're willing to put in and how much you're willing to commit to learning and making not only your industry but the world a more ethical place to do business.'‘Knowing what I know now, if I was doing it all over again, if you have a physical product or even a service that has intellectual property such as systems that can be protected, I would always start by protecting those in the US, Europe and China.'ABOUT THE GUESTRyan Margolin: As an International Business Leader and Entrepreneur, I help create sustainable services and products for industries that are full of subpar options. At Professional Hair Labs, I am an integral part of our family business where we have become the #1 Choice of Hair Replacement Professionals and are a World Leader in Cosmetic Bonding. Ryan Margolin is the CEO of Professional Hair Labs, a cosmetic company with dozens of products with tens of millions of dollars in sales all over the world. He has spent 25 years in the consumer product sales and marketing industry, and is also a TEDx speaker. Today Ryan is going to share some valuable knowledge for inventors, startups, and small manufacturers on what the foundation of smart consumer product testing is, what the different types of product testing are and at which stages in the development process, and how to leverage a pilot manufacturing run to ensure a strong brand alignment with your customers. Today you will hear us talk about: Marketing Brief is the scope of the product. Most products aren't going to speak to everybody on the market, so figure out exactly what your solution is and to what specific types of people. What types of testing are required for your product. Compliance tests. These are tests the ensure your product meets the regulatory requirements. Compliance testing is generally a base line Reliability of those tests You never get a second chance to make a first impression Reliability is what the client will expect, which will be compared to best in class, which is a lot higher quality than compliant or regulatory testing. Global sales is easier than ever to achieve, so if you put yourself to a high global calibre, you can sell worldwide. The global marketplace is more accessible now than it has ever been. Pilot production, which is customer testing Get the product to be as reliable as can be, then do a pilot production run to test the customers. This is a critical phase of ensuring that a few potential customers are tested. Get paying customers to pay for the product if you can, even just a few, so that you can learn as much as possible. This is the key separator between the companies that go big and the companies that constantly struggle is those that put the effort up front to test and validate their products as opposed to going to big production runs out of the gate. The more testing you do earlier, the exponentially less expenses and headaches you have down the road. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Ryan Margolin discuss:Setting aside ego Encouraging open communication The difference is in the mindset Controlling the fire Key Takeaways:If you truly want the business to succeed and grow, then egos must be set aside. People need to be able to drop the veil and look at themselves in the mirror to figure out how they could help the company best. Encourage people to speak their thoughts openly. Set up open lines of communication between the organization's members and executives. Consider hiring a person with a good mindset. A person who may be less qualified than another but has a stronger and hungrier kind of mindset will be a better asset to your company than others. You don't want to have that type of person slipping off your fingers. Fear is like fire. You can step back and just watch it burn everything down. Or you could control the fire and not be afraid of it. "It really comes down to mindset. It's the difference between are you just gonna stay in the same place or are you gonna truly achieve what you know you can and realize your full potential." — Ryan Margolin See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Ryan Margolin: Website: https://www.prohairlabs.comTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ghostbondglueInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/professionalhairlabs/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/professionalhairlabsLinkedIn: https://ie.linkedin.com/in/ryanmargolinConnect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370 Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Unlocking Business Growth - exploring achievements, challenges and what's interesting
Chemical poisoning from her work in the industry she loved, including in her own studios, drove Ryan Margolin's mother into early retirement. This was the catalyst that spurred his family to found Professional Hair Labs and substantially improve the industry. Today so much more is driving their growing success – their safety first, people first model finds additional niche expansion and growing enthusiasm from their team.It has not always been without challenge - in 2011 their international expansion failed dramatically, in 2017 counterfeit started and expanded rapidly. But they have pivoted and escalated when required, and today Ryan and his family lead a highly accomplished, multi-industry, multi-million dollar, international company on a path to a further five-fold expansion this year. In speaking with Ryan you see why he has been successful. He sees every challenge as an opportunity to turn a negative into a positive; there is no learning in wins, it is the challenges and failures that allow for growth. Always focused on the future, never an opportunity for complacency – he comments that when you start to feel more comfortable the pain may be right behind! When you find success or start to hit your goals it may be time to run a little faster, and stay ahead. The challenges, and hence skills and techniques required, in going from $1 million to $10 million are very different to going from $10 million to $50 million, and more.Ryan is energized by what is in store for the future of both the company and his team. In turn, we as listeners can learn from his safety first, people first success.Tune in to hear about: Why a USA company does their principal manufacturing in Ireland … it may not be what you think! Inventory management is a major challenge in manufacturing – how did a move from contract to in-house manufacturing impact this? Ryan's evolution from learning, improving and developing in the early days, to the current empowering. What is different about a truly “family” business? And more. HIGHLIGHTSA family devoted to change the hair replacement industryFrom family business to selling internationallyScaling a business entails some growing pains Communication and empathy is key in any family businessIt's easier to make progress from a place of equalityDefining a generational company's purpose and visionHow to deal with counterfeit products and protect your brandThe work has to come before the beliefQUOTESRyan: "Your business is always going to feel broken if it's growing, because there's always going to be things that you have to change. And once you become comfortable with that, and you accept that, it makes the journey a lot easier because it's just a part of growing personally and professionally."Jonathan: "And if you're doubling your business in three years or in five years, you know, you're going to outgrow your people. You're going to outgrow your systems. You're going to outgrow your space. You're going to outgrow your capital and you're maybe going to outgrow your leadership capabilities or skills. So those are all five things that you need to be thinking about and working towards."Ryan: "The best way for us as three brothers that are running the company, communication is key. It doesn't work out all the time, but I think when you have the right understanding and the ability to stop for a minute and reflect on your own actions or your own thoughts and how you can apply them to a situation to make sure — I wouldn't say that everyone is happy with everything, but that they understand that the goal, the end game is in alignment with each other." Ryan: "Everyone has an ego. Everyone does, that's part of human nature. But the ability to put it to the side and look at things holistically is very important. I suppose with our personalities and our dispositions, we have the ability to stop and do that. I think that's where a lot of the results have come from, is that fact that we have not really let any challenges or any ego-based decisions get in the way of the benefit of the company."Ryan: "This is a product that's being used on people's skin. We've had quite a lot of complaints over the last year coming from people who've had chemical burns from the product and come to find out it's counterfeit, hundred percent of the time. And the reality of it is, these people who are counterfeiting it, they don't care what they put into products to make a quick dollar. And it's completely going against everything inside of our being of why this company was created in the first place."Ryan: "It's difficult to create a brand in this day and age because there's so many other competitive products and other products like that out there. So just remember, the work has to come before the belief. Don't expect any pats in the back, you have to be patting yourself on the back for the first while. Just keep going."To connect with Ryan, check out the links below: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanmargolin/Website: https://prohairlabs.com/Email: Ryan@prohairlabs.comIf you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review and share with a friend who would benefit from the message.
