S5E50: Why It Pays to Be Your Own Advocate

The Mentee Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 26, 2022 36:16

There are two important aspects of living a fulfilling life: taking care of yourself and being kind. Do not let the negativities of life bring you down. Be your own advocate and pay the goodness forward by being an advocate for others. Even the smallest of acts can make a big difference in someone's life.In this episode of The Mentee Podcast, I interview the voice behind Scooby Doo, Scott Innes, about how he pushed through life and achieved all his goals. He also shares the value of kindness and his now-life mission of paying goodness forward. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:People are stewards of goodwill. Do not live in the past. Instead, imagine the future. Be kind. You can be the answer or the cure to someone's life. Learn to sell yourself. Episode Highlights:[09:23] Scott's Trophy StoryScott shares that he has a trophy superglued in his house. It was an award he won as a child that was destroyed to pieces after an incident with his mother. His stepfather fixed the trophy and the act has been a consistent reminder that people are stewards of goodwill. [11:56] Reaching Untapped PotentialIt is easier to remember the past than it is to imagine the future. People often show up daily living from their past. This keeps them from tapping their potential for wholeness. Scott likes to go where people say he can't. [23:49] Scott's Three Life Goals Scott shares that he had three major goals: to write a song for Kenny Rogers, to win a CMA award, and to become the voice of Scooby Doo. He was able to achieve all of these goals despite people telling him he could not. [24:47] A Mission to Pay It ForwardScott has had a lot of serendipitous moments in his life that inspired him to pay the goodness forward. He knows that he is imperfect and he has regretted a lot of life decisions. But this does not stop him from continuously doing good things for people -- even the people he doesn't know. You could be the answer to someone's cure for their life. [28:04] Selling & Believing in YourselfPeople have so much talent, but some are just too afraid to speak up. You will struggle if you don't believe in yourself. Remember, you control your destiny. Scott has been a firm believer in believing in oneself, keeping one's feet on the ground, and reaching for the stars. Control your destiny. Learn to sell yourself.Notable quotes from the Episode:[10:43] “We, as people, are stewards of goodwill.”[25:57] “You, today, could be the answer to someone's cure in their life.”[28:51] You got to sell yourself. If you believe in your goods, you got to do it.Resources Mentioned:Connect with Wyatt Graves: LinkedIn | Website The Mentee Podcast: Website | Apple | SpotifyConnect with Scott Innes: LinkedIn

Our station is rated #1 five years running and my show is the biggest and at 9 years, the longest running show in the North Georgia and Western North Carolina mountains. With the Nielsen ratings in this year 23,900 out of 88,700 total people listen to us each week. That's amazing, considering how many people listen to satellite or internet radio and don't listen to AM/FM. I have interviewed lots of people in these 9 years. It is more comedy than serious; we like to call it “unfair and unbalanced”.Some of the people that I have interviewed are Mark Farner, Paul Roberts (Sniff “n” the Tears), Tommy Emmanuel, Chuck Leavell, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Paul Teutul Sr, Matt King, Stuart Margolin (Angel Martin on Rockford Files), Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke), Charles Bernstein, Scott Innes (the official voice of Scooby Doo), Markos Papadatos, Josh Morningstar, John Schneider, Barry Corbin, Rodney Justo, Barton Gilliam, Reno Collier, Adam Boyer, T Graham Brown, Jon Reep, Brande Roderick, Georgette Jones, Cindy Wills, Thomas Gabriel, Bo Hopkins, Don McLean, Ronnie Millsap, Kyle Bush, Dean Miller, Gigi Garner, Sonny Sawyer, Whitney Miller, James Gregory, Gary Chapman, Sid Davis, Paul Thorn, who regularly calls into the show and some people we would be ashamed to mention and the list keeps growing. In the 1980's there were a number of bands who started to change their style of playing , marching and general appearance, some of these bands went on to really influence the scene, bringing  in a wide range of new tunes that seemed to capture everyone's attention.Once such band was Pride of the Myle from Glasgow, they released two recordings in the 80's that are still revered today. Their arrangements of Scarborough Fair and Midnight is a Place still sound fresh today. The band disappeared from the scene around 1990. There were rumours that they were going to be making a comeback and that the Lagan Valley cultural day 2020 would see them stepping back on to the scene. Then covid-19 hit and that was that. Well not even a world pandemic has been able to stop them and hopefully in the new year we will once again see the Myle back on the road again.Enjoy the conversation with Scott as he share his flute band journey and the impact being a member of the Myle had on him.Next week's episode will feature Stu Warmington and Mo Brown talking about Military Tattoo's, you won't want to miss that.Remember the book is still available from Amazon and will make a great Christmas present for anyone interested in marching bands. £10 on paperback and £7.99 for Kindle.A shout out to our patrons for their continued support, we couldn't do what we do without you.If you want to share your story get in touch with us via: madetoparadebook@gmail.comVisit our website to subscribe www.madetoparade.comCheck us out on Facebook and Twitter for news, merchandise and much more.
