In this two part series Ant explores how Truman's journey of personal awakening can serve as a metaphor for the dramatic events surrounding Covid-19 which forced us to re-evaluate many aspects of life. He uses examples of how the extreme restrictions placed upon our day-to-day lives compelled us to look within and gave us the opportunity to heal our historic traumas. Ant also considers the similarities between Truman's quest for freedom on Seahaven and the methods we used to escape the Covid-19 insanity within our local communities.Episode 45 - The Truman Show: A Journey of Personal Awakeninghttps://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/discerningconsciousness/episodes/2020-03-11T10_56_32-07_00

IT'S TIME TO END THIS THING, REFINERS!!Our three part "Truman Show" Origins Odyssey is about to come to an end. Truman's freakout is in full bloom. He crossed the bridge!! (This may or may not mean he has fixed his inner soul). There's a nuclear plant meltdown, a forest fire and a fugitive escapee in the woods...and that's all in the first 20 minutes of this final Opus.Meryl must bid us a fond farewell...but don't worry. Christof has found another young actress willing to sleep with the star of the show. We'll meet her, too! Oh, and yes, we'll finally have a chance to really sit down with Christof, the creator of "The Truman Show" and the gang in the Lunar Room. Truman may have given up on trying to escape...or, maybe, it's his most stunning plot yet!! There comes a time when problems can't be fixed with a beer...but, until that time, we've got Marlon on stand-by with a sixer of Penn Pavel's.So, if you're ready, it's time to stroll the lovely streets of Seahaven for the final time. WELCOME BACK, REFINERS!!It's time for more "Severed: Origins" as we continue to break down the 1998 Jim Carrey classic, "The Truman Show."I'm making a long winter meal out of this one, gang. We start this segment by meeting Truman's mother. The lovely Holland Taylor is stellar as "Mom." We hang out with Truman as he's watching some of the offerings on Seahaven's TV channel. Truman hears some weirdness on the radio and sees a LOT of weirdness in a building elevator. He follows both Meryl and Marlon to work then decides he HAS to get off the island. Flights are a month out (it's the busy season!) and the bus is smoking. Mr. Burbank figures he'll drive his way off the island. Don't miss out, Refiners!! Following Truman around Seahaven is the most fun you can have in single digit temps!! Is it going to take me ten hours to get through this two-hour movie?? WELCOME BACK, REFINERS!! The 'Severed' ORIGINS Series continues with a look at a fun an interesting movie from 1998. This time out, we take on "The Truman Show" directed by Peter Weir and Starring Jim Carrey, Ed Harris and Laura Linney. In this installment, we learn about the long and twisting path this movie took when it came to getting both a director and a script. We'll actually hit 'play' and fire it up. That's when we'll meet Christof, Louis and Hannah. Although Truman doesn't know Christof at all and he thinks Hannah's name is Meryl and Louis' name is Marlon. It's a weird existence on Seahaven...especially if your name is Truman. This is one of the movies that inspired Dan Erickson as he was creating "Severance." It's easy to see how Truman is the perpetual innie. Christof is like a distant Jame Eagan, running the show without his charge even knowing it.It's a fun, well-made, interesting movie that is still talked about in media ethics classes. Your hosts tune in and watch an imprisoned reality TV star in Peter Weir's “The Truman Show” (1998).

This week, Billy and Gary breakdown whether or not Truman Burbank would have been better off staying in the dome of Seahaven rather than step out into the real world for the first time in his life.
In this landmark episode, we examine Peter Weir's "The Truman Show", finally delving into the topic of utilitarianism, while welcoming our first ever "in-studio" guest. We discuss the weekly beverage pairing and power through Producer's Notes (9:54), before a quick Synopsis leads us into Philosopher's Corner (30:50) and a round table discussion of the philosophical aspects of the movie. Its worth noting that Alain's treatment of utilitarianism is suspect at best. Featured Beer: Jerkface 9000, by Parallel 49 Brewing Company (Vancouver, BC)

Eric Miko Findlay has been with SoCal alternative/post-hardcore band Seahaven since they formed in high school (he actually started on bass and switched to drums after auditioning for his own band!) They had a great run in the early-mid 2010s, then went dark for 2 years, then made a new record and got ready to hit the road juuuuuust in time for touring to get cancelled. We talk about that, recording in the Costa Rican jungle and more. Great convo. If you're a drummer, make sure you listen to the end to hear how to get the most out of your practice time.

Eric Findlay formed his band, Seahaven, in 2009. Amazingly, he was still in junior high and was the band's bassist. When the band's drummer left, Eric auditioned for the open drumming spot and was "hired". His personal story only gets better from there. Seahaven embraced the difficult (yet highly rewarding) do-it-yourself brand of recording and extensive touring. In November 2020, they released their third studio album, Halo of Hurt in the midst of a global pandemic that prevents touring. On episode 121, Eric joins Jamie for a deep dive into his personal story, the band's history, and how the DIY touring model can bring true success to musicians everywhere. Eric is a seriously talented drummer that should be on your radar.

I am proud to bring you this episode because it's a perfect example of how I want this podcast to function. Michael was a listener of the show, emailed me and we started a dialog. I come to find out he plays in Seahaven and then I immediately invite him to be on the show. We discuss having focus, dealing with anxiety and being creative. It was a very "musical" chat since Seahaven doesn't particularly do a lot of press so it's an honor to have him on.
