Twitter: @rustaceanfm Discord: Rustacean Station Github: @rustacean-station Email: hello@rustacean-station.org Timestamps & referenced resources [@00:00] Welcome [@00:10] - Introduction [@00:50] - Agenda [@01:23] - Quote of the week This is the difference in approaches of the two languages. In C++ if the code is vulnerable, the blame is on the programmer. In Rust if the code is vulnerable, Rust considers it a failure of the language, and takes responsibility to stop even “bad” programmers from writing vulnerable code. I can't stress enough how awesome it is that I can be a careless fool, and still write perfectly robust highly multi-threaded code that never crashes. [@03:09] Allen: Rust is both good and bad at marketing [@03:30] - Crate of the week [@04:15] - Tim and Sean discuss parsing in episode 2022-05-26 at 47:10 [@05:10] Official Notices [@05:22] - Announcing Rust 1.61.0 Custom exit codes from main [Note from Tim: I say “termination crate”, but should have said “Termination trait”.] More capabilities for const fn “Basic” handling of fn pointers Add trait bounds to a const fn dyn trait and impl Trait support Stdio handles can be locked directly Several stabilized APIs [@08:07] Highlights [@08:27] - Developer survey: JavaScript and Python reign, but Rust is rising [@09:09] - Sean: “Rust adoption has nearly quadrupled in the last two years, going from 600k developers in Q1 2022 to 2.2m in Q1 2022.” [@13:00] - Redust by Will Nelson [@13:50] Allen: I think the comments are actually more interesting. They are starting to point to something really—I don't know whether it's good or bad for the community—where, you know, people start rolling their own crates instead of, say, doing stuff upstream. It kind of goes back to what Tim was complaining about before [Easy Mode for Rust, discussed on This Week in Rust - Issue 441]—well, lightly pointing out to people out there—that okay, now which crate should I use? [@16:20] Tim: Open source is really complicated. You need to talk to people. That's … challenging. [Laughs] [@16:40] Josh Triplett on Building with Rust, discussing the orphan rule [@16:50] Sean: Rust is not very good at sharing between crates. [@19:07] - Rust: A Critical Retrospective by bunnie Links The Hardware Hacker, bunnie's autobiography [video] “Shenzhen: An Alternative to the American way of Innovation” [@28:56] A Programmer's Brain, by Felienne Hermans, about working memory in programmers. [@19:58] - Hacking the Xbox book [@20:04] - [video] Linux.conf.au 2013 keynote discussing Chumby and creating a hardware startup [@20:20] - betrusted.io, a secure communications system that runs the Xous microkernel operating system [@21:07] - Tim: Security-critical applications have issues when they … rely on Rust. There's one quote I want to pull out of the post, which is: “I'm not sure if there is even a good solution to this problem, but, if you are super-paranoid and your goal is to be able to build trustable firmware, be wary of Rust's expansive software supply chain attack surface!” [@26:09] - Sean: bunnie I think that you are absolutely, totally, qualified. [@30:17] - Allen: I did see a macro that he put in there. … I forget extact. It was very crazy and I was like, “Come on, no one's every going to write something crazy like this” and then I took a look at the RFC that Sean's gonna do and in the comments there was a crazy one like that and I was like, “oh wow, this guy's point's valid”. [@30:49] - Hyrum's Law, named after Hyrum Wright. With a sufficient number of users of an API, it does not matter what you promise in the contract: all observable behaviors of your system will be depended on by somebody. [@31:50] Fixing memory leaks by Lily Mara [@34:01] - tracing crate, created as part of the tokio project [@32:33] - “Is it possible to cause a memory leak in Rust?” - Stack Overflow [@33:06] - std::ops::Drop trait documentation std::mem::forget and Box::leak for intentionally leaking memory Out-of memory (OOM) killer internals page from the Linux memory management wiki [@37:54] tracing::instrument::Instrument trait, which fixes this issue [@41:29] Building a Cloud Database from Scratch: Why We Moved from C++ to Rust by Yingjun Wu GAT (generic associated traits) Allen: [C++ vs Rust] is like apples vs apple pie. [@45:50] - [video] Deref and Drop traits by Dan Chiarlone “Smart pointers”, chapter 15 of The Rust Programming Language. std::ops::Deref trait documentation [@46:40] - Optimizing the size of your Rust binaries by Sylvain Kerkour cargo-bloat, for determining the size impact of code and dependencies twiggy, a similar tool for WASM targets [@48:10] - RFC: Add more support for fallible allocations in Vec by Daniel Paoliello and contributors Sean: This RFC is intended as a stop-gap, to unblock on-going work like—I imagine—adding Rust to the Linux kernel while better long-term solutions are explored. “Example: Implementing Vec” chapter of the Rustnomicon, describes how Vec's memory allocation works in detail Never type reference documentation [@54:40] Tim: I want to bring out a comment that was made to me in private, because I've been toying with the idea of becoming a rustc contributor, particularly on the standard library side, and Ashley Mannix sent me a really lovely note, which was: “Rust is also chronically friendly so nobody gets chewed out for making mistakes. They happen. They get caught. They get patched. You learn something new. It's ok.”. [@55:51] - How we use Rust, SQLx and Rocket for Oso Cloud by Steve Olsen Other items [@57:20] Meetups [@57:31] Major release announcements DataFusion 8.0 IntelliJ Rust plugin 2022.1 [@57:40] Join us in the #this-week-in-rust channel of the Rustacean Station Discord server Credits Intro Theme: Aerocity Audio Editing: Aleksandar Nikolic Hosting Infrastructure: Jon Gjengset Show Notes: Tim McNamara Hosts: Tim McNamara, Sean Chen, and Allen Wyma.

In a last minute special episode, Jimmy and pal Greg Pak chat about his new illustrated book of poetry called I BELONG TO YOU/MOTHERLAND. It's about growing up half Korean in Texas and not quite belonging but totally bound to the flora and fauna of the place. It's also about lessons, memory and the death of his mother.  Great photos by both his mother and Greg with original art by comic book artists like Shing Yin Khor, Sean Chen, Ethan Young and more. Greg talks about the origin of the book as a libretto for a choral group in Texas that will perform it in a few weeks. They also chat about growing up as latchkey kids and having the freedom to explore and do things that were normal back then. A sense of belonging is a strong part of the book as well and Greg tells of us his struggles. It's also a lovely tribute to his mother and he talks of the joy of growing up with her and the goodness she instilled in him. A beautiful memoir indeed! The book is out June 25th and will be exclusively available for purchase via the Austin, Texas comic book shop Dragon's Lair. It will be available elsewhere shortly after. Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!

Sean Chen (artist of X-O, Iron Man, Wolverine and Batman Beyond) joins Creator Talks to discuss the September 1st only 24-hour digital drop of Wingman: Compendium of an Artist's First Writing Experience.  The book was inspired by the 1957 classic Swedish art film The Seventh Seal directed by Ingmar Bergman. The digital version of Sean's book is available free and in it's entirety on Nextchapter's Instagram @NextChapterPost. The physical copy will not only contain the story but also a page-by-page look at Sean's creative process. Why did Sean decide to post the story on Instagram and partner with NextChapter for the physical edition rather than a launching a Kickstarter campaign? Don't worry if you are listening to our interview too late to get a physical copy. There is still a plenty of discussion of Sean's career, from Valiant to Marvel, and the lessons he has learned about making comics. We talk about the first time I meet Sean during the Delaware Valley CBRI One Day Tour that was held Saturday February 27, 1993. He was promoting his first comic work for Valiant Rai and The Future Force. How did Sean get his first break working for Valiant Comics?  Sean learned a great deal at Valiant and tells how his art developed under the guidance of Art Director Barry-Windsor Smith and Editor-In-Chief Bob Layton.  When Sean made the jump to Marvel Comics 1998 to illustrate Iron Man for the launch of Marvel's Heroes Return, he had the opportunity to work with writer Kurt Busiek.  Sean explains how writer/artist collaborations back then were different than how they are commonly done today.  Kick Back With the Creator to learn how Sean likes to relax, his island book and the oddest job he ever had.   Plus: Sean reveals what he considers his missed opportunities that comic artists should take heed.   Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts Learn about NextChaptersPosts one-day sale! I continue to explore the Batman Family corner of the DC Universe with veteran writer / artist Dan Jurgens.   Among Dan's vast body of work is the 1992 classic Death of Superman, his run on Thor, Captain America and The Sensational Spider-Man.  Dan is also the creator of the classic characters Doomsday and Booster Gold.   I check in with Dan to see how he is faring during the coronavirus pandemic and how he managed to safely connect with local fans at a Minnesota comic shop during a recent signing event.   Dan is working with former collaborator Sean Chen, one of the current artists on Batman Beyond.  I asked Sean in advance to comment on working with Dan and shared his feedback.    Both creators have in common working for Valiant Comics during the 1990s. Dan reflects on a few highlights while writing Solar Man of the Atom.   Dan explains why every comic he writes still contains enough exposition to make the issue accessible to new readers.    We talk about comic book anniversaries and how they have lost some of their luster with the increasing frequency of these milestone issues.  Dan explains what is key for him to make an issue worthy of containing extra pages that demand a higher price tag.   Dick Grayson returns as the titular hero in Nightwing this fall with issue #75.     Dick lost his memory from a gunshot to the head by KGBeast back in Batman #55 and his struggle continued beginning with Nightwing #50. Dan took over the reigns writing Nightwing with issue #59.  He explains his approach to keeping the series a Nightwing comic book until the return of Dick Grayson as Nightwing.   Both Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond and Dick Grayson in Nightwing suffered from memory loss.  Is there a connection between the two?   I ask Dan's his thoughts on Superman not being consider for another solo film, Henry Cavill in the title role and the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice Zak Snyder Cut.    The final chapter of the Death of Superman was illustrated entirely with single panel pages. What ever happened to the original art from Superman #75?    When I Kick Back With the Creator, I ask Dan about his favorite birthday which digresses into a discussion of 8-track tapes. For his island book Dan picks an ideal comic omnibus.   All this and more is in this installment of Creator Talks.   Creator Talks Theme Song: "Jazz Relax" by LoopsLab    Please rate and review Creator Talks on Apple Podcasts   More about Dan Jurgens

(RIGHT CLICK THE IMAGE TO SAVE THIS EPISODE TO YOUR COMPUTER) John and Paul have been given a new Critical Assignment.  With the success of The Six Million Dollar Man Season 6 by Dynamite Comics, it stood to reason that a The Bionic Woman Season 4 comic would follow.  But as most bionic fans know, The Bionic Woman does not usually feature the same kind of story telling as her male counterpart.  Dynamite's previous attempt at a Bionic Woman comic was less than stellar.  Is it possible they can get it right by using the original source material?  Writer Brandon Jerwa has been tapped for the assignment and he sits down with John and Paul to discuss what he feels it will take to make The Bionic Woman a successful comic for both the fans of the series and the general comic book reader.   00:00 - Show introduction 03:00 - Bionic Renaissance 04:10 - Brandon Introduction 08:00 - "Where you a fan of Six Million Dollar Man & Bionic Woman?" 12:45 - Viewing the Differences Between the Two Bionic Shows and Characters 19:55 - Announcing The Six Million Dollar Man Season 6 21:30 - Where Dynamite's First Bionic Woman Went Wrong 23:25 - Picking Up Where "On the Run" Left Off 25:55 - An "All Ages" Comic 29:00 - Dialogue That Sums Up Jaime Sommers 31:25 - How Brandon Got the Gig 35:20 - Brandon Will Come Back If We're Not Satisfied 35:55 - Who From the Series Will We See? 37:10 - "Will We See the Coach House?" 38:35 - "Where Does the Story Take Place in Relation to Six Million Dollar Man Season 6?" 40:10 - Likenesses of the Characters 44:45 - Brandon's Documentary and the Prism Award 53:45 - Brandon on the Web 55:20 - Sign Off   Comment on this episode here or by writing abionicpodcast@gmail.com   Brandon's Links   Facebook Twitter   BJ Shea's Geek Nation Podcast Brandon Jerwa is a writer, musician, and recently, a documentarian. He's been writing comics for over 10 years - and is no stranger to licensed tie-in storytelling. In 2003 he broke into the industry - literally - as a fan, submitting a GI JOE script to DEVILS DUE COMICS who was publishing the title at the time. They liked it, hired him to write the story for A G.I. Joe anthology and then gave him the main book to write a few months later. He even had a GI JOE action figure made in his likeness!   In 2006 Brandon went to work for Dynamite Comics, doing a stint on their HIGHLANDER tie-in before enjoying a very popular run on their BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA tie-in 2007.   Since then he's written for more high-profile comics publishers like IMAGE COMICS, VERTIGO and DC Comics.   In 2011 Brandon ventured into documentary filmmaking with an ambitious peak into the world of comic books and telling the stories of the people who make them. We'll talk more about that later on.   In 2012 Brandon’s work on the Graphic Novel SHOOTERS about a Post-9-11 IRAQI War veteran WON a PRISM AWARD recognizing the comic’s accurate depiction of mental illness.   Brandon is no stranger to podcasting, you can hear him DAILY on BJ SHEA'S GEEK NATION PODCAST which covers all things geeky in NEWS, TV, MOVIES, COMICS.   On JUNE 15th of 2014, based on the success of their SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN SEASON SIX title (by James Kuhoric), Dynamite revealed to BLEEDING COOL.com that they would be releasing a BIONIC WOMAN SEASON FOUR title in SEPTEMBER. Written by Brandon Jerwa, art by David T. Cabrera and a cover for issue one by Sean Chen along with a photo cover of series star Lindsay Wagner. We'll get to Chen's cover in a moment, too.   In that brief news item, Brandon is quoted saying, “If you’ve never seen the show, or haven’t read James Kuhoric’s Six Million Dollar Man comic, you’re still totally fine, longtime fans won’t be left out in the cold, though. The Bionic Woman: Season Four is a continuation of the classic TV series, so I’m definitely treating it as such in terms of continuity and thematic carry-through.”
