Season 2 of the The Vinyl Detroit Podcast kicks off with my very special discussion with San Francisco's own The Umbrellas. I had the privilege of speaking to the entire band on the eve of the 2022 Oakland Weekender, where they rocked the show!Matt, Keith, Morgan and Nick share their experiences recording their absolutely wonderful debut LP, which I firmly stand behind my comment that it will be an “modern classic pop album”. The band also opened up about many different subjects including Sarah Records, the songs of Bobby Wratten and the effects of the pandemic on their work. They even expounded on their love Seinfeld, our shared support of Del Taco, their place in the San Francisco pop lineage as well as their support of up-and-coming British indie label, Prefect Records.I'm happy to kick off Season 2 of The Vinyl Detroit Podcast with my discussion with The Umbrellas. All episodes of Season 2 will feature an all-new introduction track generously composed by season 1 guests Shoestrings! I hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I loved putting it together.Find this and all previous episodes of The Vinyl Detroit Podcast here - https://linktr.ee/vinyl_detroit
Do you realize that many American youth today do not even know their shirt size, height, or weight? Even teens! What are they paying attention to besides a basic connection to their bodies and biometrics? It's worth a show and chat. *Photo by Ron Jones
May 5th, 1993 was a tragic day for so many people in West Memphis Arkansas as three eight-year-old boys (Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore) went missing . By the next morning, instead of panic, the town felt palpable fear with the discover that the young second-graders had been brutally and senselessly murdered. By 1994, three local teens were in prison, convicted of the murders; but the story hasn't ended there. This is part 2 of our series in which we examine the trials and convictions as well as explore various theories concerning who might be the perpetrator(s). For the special episode of The Vinyl Detroit Podcast Interview, Brian had the pleasure of speaking to Kendall Meade of Mascott. Kendall was gracious enough to speak about the making of her 2000 LP Follow The Sound on Le Grand Magistery. Follow The Sound is a unique album as it features multiple producers including Jim O'Rourke, Jeffrey Baron of The Ladybug Transistor, Stars and Mario of Shoestrings. In addition to this all-star production team, Kendall also rounded up a who's who of guest musicians to perform on the album including Sally Timms, Joan Wasser and others. Follow The Sound could have easily become a disjointed affair by enlisting this stable of talented producers. Instead, Follow The Sound is a cohesive work; weaving together various styles all cemented together by way of excellent songwriting and musicianship. Kendall was a joy to speak to as she discussed the origins of the band, the album, artwork and her connections to others in the industry. This episode features extended samples from Follow The Sound including the title track, History, As Planned, Costume Ball and the album closer, I Really Wanted You originally performed by Steve Tilson in 1971. With that, episode 9 was a very special treat discussing Mascott's 2000 release on Le Grand Magistery Follow The Sound with its creator, Kendall Meade.Apple Music Playlist - https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/episode-9-follow-the-sound-by-mascott/pl.u-KWJLfZ4ZGoGSpotify Playlist - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5omMy9p07YVBY7hoDYWfyE?si=dea8c492e72a46fd

This episode features the first of Brian's “The Vinyl Detroit Podcast Interview” where he sits down with the artist behind the work to give them the opportunity to share their story like never before. In addition to a deep discussion on their origins, creative process and even a bit on their new album Expectations, he plays some select tracks from the album Wishing On Planes. Mario and Rose also share details of a friendship that turned into a relationship that ultimately born the project fans have come to know as Shoestrings.Featuring the first “The Vinyl Detroit Podcast Interview” with Shoestrings, please sit back, relax and let's take Wishing on Planes by Shoestrings for a spin!

This week's episode was real and raw. You wouldn't expect the episode to take the turn it did as Erica giggles her way into a topic of discussion that makes her highly uncomfortable. Hello Creative Friends, How do we make great art, when what we have to work with is meager? How do we create amazing new things, when resources are thin? This episode was inspired by the wise words of John Coltrane: "You can play a shoestring if you're sincere." Maybe shoestring music is exactly the kind of art the world needs right now. Maybe we don't need to have power to make powerful things. SUPPORT THE PODCAST We have been overwhelmed with wonderful messages from you all about the future of this relatively new baby podcast. What you'll hear on this episode. I recently had a chance to sit down with Sole for Souls CEO, Buddy Teaster. We talked a lot about ultra running, mainly Buddy's recent Grindstone 100 run, a race he ran after just 3 training runs in the year leading up to it. We talked about the Hard Rock Ultra - why Buddy loves that race enough to run a 100 mile race like the Grindstone with limited preparation, just to qualify for a lottery to get in the Hard Rock. But we spent most of our time talking about Buddy's true passion. Soles 4 Souls and wearing out poverty. I encourage you to pick up Buddy's book, Shoestrings, here: order shoestrings I encourage you to check out the website for Soles4Souls Buddy Teaster talks to me about taking us from a place of mere giving to a place of believing we can truly wear out poverty. After talking to him, I'm a believer. I hope you'll listen to my conversation. I pray you'll be moved to a place of believing that as well. Buddy Teaster, the CEO of Soles4Souls and the author of Shoestrings, is back for another episode of the Giving Back Podcast! Buddy has delivered over 30 million shoes to impoverished areas all over the world. Through Buddy’s shoe program, he is helping impoverished people transform their lives in a sustainable way that carries over to the next generation. All from just a pair of shoes! Key Takeaways: [3:15] This is Buddy’s second guest appearance! [5:00] Buddy gives a quick recap of what Soles4Souls does. [8:15] You might not know it yet, but we can create such a personal connection to our shoes. [9:10] Buddy shares an example of how the shoe program helps people. [12:40] One penny goes a long way for Soles4Souls. [16:55] Going on mission trips or volunteer and charity trips is more for you than it is for the people you’re helping. You need to be honest with yourself. [23:20] Why did Buddy decide to write a book? [30:35] What kind of eye-opening moments did Buddy learn about while interviewing people for his book? [36:05] How do you really know if you’re making an impact? [38:20] How would you feel if you tripled your income overnight? [43:25] Buddy is right now developing a partnership where he will make it easy for you to donate your used pair of shoes. Right now, it’s a bit ‘inconvenient’ to do. [50:55] One pair of shoes makes a huge, huge impact on one person’s life. Can you buy nothing new for a year? Can you make do and mend literally almost everything rather than replace it? That is exactly what my guest, Jen Gale of My Make Do and Mend Year did! I had the joy of interviewing Jen for another radio show and I was thrilled when she agreed to be my guest yet again. She has such a great outlook it’s contagious! My thought process behind having Jen on is to help inspire you to do what you can NOW, train your brain, hands and heart to avoid the monster of planned obsolescence and over stimulated consumerism. If our society were forced to give up these now common practices – how well do you feel you’d fare? How well do you feel those around you, who are used to the conveniences and trappings of a disposable life fare? I think this offers us a serious opportunity to search our skill set and life choices. I feel Jen offers many ideas and hope for how resilient we can train ourselves to be! FREE Digital Subscription to PREPARE Magazine Remember: Keep Growing and enJOY the Journey!
