I love thinking about the idea that just because your life has been a certain way until this point, doesn't mean you can't change your own trajectory. Who you were 10, 5 or even last year is not the same person you are today. We live, we learn and we grow. Take the time to acknowledge the challenges and accomplishments in your life, and celebrate how far you've gotten. On this episode of Just In Stride I had a pleasant chat with Elite Ultra Trail Runner and Nutrition Coach, Jazmine Lowther. She had an active and competitive childhood but fell out of sports and into other interests that put her future in danger. Fortunately for her, she realized her own potential before it was too late.Today her focus is much different, becoming a pro ultra trail runner and going all in. Her breakout year was in 2022, winning the 100K as the underdog at Canyons, earning a Golden Ticket to Western States and finishing 4th in the CCC at UTMB in Chamonix. Unfortunately after that, injuries got in her way of realizing some of those dreams but she's shown resilience, battled back and is ready to compete this upcoming season.-------Offer from Xact Nutrition: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Strap in for an experience that'll leave your heart a little heavier, yet hopeful, as I chat with Bill Matthews—a man who's faced the darkest valleys of addiction and emerged into the light of wellness and mentoring. His tale isn't just about personal victory; it's a roadmap for others wrestling with the shackles of substance abuse. At 57, with a life rich in sobriety and health, Bill doesn't shy away from the gritty details of his past—a childhood marred by alcohol and drugs, and a journey through the tumultuous waves of recovery that have shaped him into the beacon of hope he is today. Our conversation paints the stark realities of alcoholism against the canvas of family dynamics, early exposure to substance abuse, and the long road to reclaiming one's life. Bill's openness offers a piercing look at how addiction can be a silent thief in the night, robbing years and potential, often masquerading as a social key to ease anxieties. But it's not just a walk down memory lane; we traverse the transformative impact of the 12-step program, the camaraderie of shared struggle, and the discovery of passions like ultra-trail running that redefine the essence of what it means to thrive after addiction. The episode crescendos with Bill's enlifted strategies for tackling self-doubt and the art of self-belief—swapping out that deceptive 'little devil' whispering negativity for a 'corner man' in your corner, cheering on your victories. Embrace a narrative that's raw, powerful, and occasionally peppered with the lighter moments of carrying kettlebells through everyday life, and the wisdom gleaned from pushing past the rough patches. Bill Matthews' journey is more than inspirational—it's a clarion call to action for anyone standing at the crossroads, ready to embark on their own path to transformation. --------- EPISODE CHAPTERS --------- (0:00:02) - Reshaping Mindsets and Thriving as Men (0:07:50) - Alcoholism, Family, and Decision-Making (0:12:31) - Reflections on Alcoholism and Personal Growth (0:18:23) - From Addiction to Ultra Trail Running (0:30:58) - Discovering and Embracing Personal Growth (0:37:28) - Embracing the Uncomfortable (0:42:04) - Inspiring Transformation Through Self-Belief (0:50:26) - Ignoring the Negativity to Achieve Success THE FOUNDATION - Virtual Community for Young MenBuilding Men InstagramBuilding Men WebsiteBuilding Men YouTubeBuilding Men FacebookWork with Dennis as your 1 on 1 coach If our podcast resonates with you, please consider rating, reviewing and sharing it with anyone who you believe would benefit from the message.Visit our sponsors - Finish The Race – Home of the official Building Men gear

#044 - I love talking to Ultra Runners. They have such a determination and grit that is hard to describe. My guest this week, Michael Whiteside, is someone who I would describe as someone with both grit and determination.Michael is from my home state of Utah and is fairly new on the Ultra Running scene. Michael has dealt with a tough past, but uses ultra running as another way to battle past addictions and self-doubt. It was fun talking to Michael about the beauty he sees when he runs and the community of trail runners that make up such a tight knight group. I also love how much Michael's family and in-laws mean to him and the support they give him. This episode was inspiring and entertaining. I really loved getting to know who Michael is a person. To follow along a little closer to Michael give him a follow on Instagram @michael_dean82 .Thank for listening to Journey with Jake. In today's episode, we speak with Hillary Allen about her love for sky running and trail running, and how she fuels for these challenging courses. We'll also dive into how her nutrition changed after her life-threatening injury. About Hillary Allen:My career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and being told I would never run again, I've had to re-think what I consider impossible, as I continued to push myself, believing in my best athletic days ahead.Early in my career, I earned the nickname “Hillygoat” for my love of the uphill and my ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. I won the US SkyRunner Series in 2014 in my debut season and since then, I have raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing myself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world. In 2017 I had a life threatening accident, where I fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. I broke a total of 14 bones and I was told I would never run again – let alone compete at the elite level. After several years of rehab and recovery, I made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, running some of my longest and most challenging races post-accident.I maintain the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you,' if you're willing to work hard for what you love and never give up on yourself.I also am a scientist, I have a masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology, I'm a running coach, and a gravel cyclist. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.See you in the next episode!***Join our 2022 Holiday Challenge here: https://p.bttr.to/3Cy1gE8New customers save 10% off all products on our website with the code NEWNR10 here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/products/Find our Menopause Support Meal Plan here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/product/menopause-support-meal-plan/If you would like to work with our practitioners, click here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/work-with-us/If you're interested in sponsoring Nutritional Revolution Podcast, shoot us an email at nutritionalrev@gmail.com.***Mentioned:Hillary AllenWebsite: https://hillaryallen.com/Instagram: @hillygoat_climbsOut and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds: https://amzn.to/3yiFmSESports nutritionKlean Athlete Klean Collagen + Vitamin C: https://amzn.to/3EjWBa9Tart Cherry Juice: https://amzn.to/3MhbMD4Thorne Curcumin Phytosome 500 mg Turmeric Supplement: https://amzn.to/3yihQp1Skratch Wellness Hydration Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/3CEnkwGSkratch Hydration Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/3Maq8VHNuun Sport Tablets: https://amzn.to/3CEJtuXSpring Energy Gels: https://amzn.to/3rHCjj6JoJé Bars: https://amzn.to/3CEKCCH

In this episode, we meet with Reid Coolsaet, a Professional Trail Runner for Salomon based in Hamilton, Ontario.Reid burst onto the mountain ultra trail running scene in 2021 with a win at the Quebec Mega Trail 110K, competed at the Black Canyon 100K earlier this month, and will be lining up for the Canyons 100K in April and the Western States 100 in June. Prior to his venture onto the trails, Reid had an extremely successful career in road marathoning. He holds a 2:10:28 marathon PR and represented Canada in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. It's been talked about recently to no end, but indeed our sport is only getting more competitive and professionalized and Reid's entrance is just the latest proof point. One thing that struck me about Reid was his openness and willingness to talk about any issue in the sport whether it was related to compensation as a professional athlete, training methodology, drug testing, or anything else. It made for an interesting and engaging conversation and I hope that shines through here. Life-Sparring Podcast - Fighting Mediocrity, One Round At A Time
Middle of October, I was glued for 4 days to a Facebook Live stream from Bell Buckle, Tennessee, following Big Dog's Backyard Ultra, one of the craziest ultra trail running races in the world.Different from a traditional start to finish race, “Big's” does not have a finish line. Instead, all race contenders must start a loop of the course at every full hour. If they manage to get around the 6.7056 km / 4 miles 880 feet long loop in less than 60 minutes, the remainder of the hour can be used for resting, refueling, running to the toilets, or even sleeping. The race winner is the participant, who manages to complete one more round than the second last contender. For Morten Klingenberg, aka Løbetossen / Run Crazy, the trip from Denmark to the Big's Backyard Ultra World Championships was a big step up to the world stage and only his second race outside of his native country. As a trail running enthusiast, albeit a slow one, I couldn't have been more excited getting Morten on the show, talking about running with the “big dogs,” and developing the ultimate ultra mindset. For complete show notes, all relevant links and more cool content, go to Life-Sparring.com
On todays show we have Karl Meltzer. Karl is one of the first runners in our sport to truly go pro, specializing early on in his career in the 100 mile event. Since the late 1990s, he's won over 40 races, including at least 1 every year for for the last 19 years - both are records that may never be broken. He's also the Race Director for the Speedgoat 50k and perhaps most importantly, he's just a guy you'd wanna have a beer with. He brings so much awesome perspective to the sport. In this episode, we do some analysis on the American contingent at this year's UTMB, we talk about race directing, we speculate on a potential new 100 mile race in the central Wasatch range, and we reflect on what it takes to make a career out of this sport. I won't spoil anything for you, but this was one of my favorite conversations to date. Enjoy!
Today we join Julia Mallon, who calls herself an ultra trail running mom. She was a runner in college and completely destroyed her knee riding a skateboard around campus and never stopped doing crazy things. She's an avid skier, trail runner and founder of a badass outdoor event company Eventus Outdoors. It's true, the Virtual OCR Beer run has kicked off. The Original Crazies and the Bellingham Rugby Club Hippos with our guest Martin Ker. We are pleading with all of our fellow Americans to help us beat these guys. We can't take the ribbing from across the pond. Also, we talk about the amazing Iron Cowboy and his attempt to complete 100 Ironman Triathlons in 100 days. And be sure to tune in for our featured Strava member.

Yesterday Kilian Jornet, who is one of the best ultra trail runners ever, tried his hand at a Fixed Timed Ultra. He and his team went BIG and went HOME early. Jornet going for Kouros's 24 Hour record would be like John Coltrane trying to record a Mozart symphony with no practice in a meat locker ... Kilian Jornet has dropped out, shortly after passing the 11-hour mark and 134.8 kilometres. Jornet had actually left the track sometime before this, but those following the attempt were hopeful he would be able to return and make up for lost time. The announcers said that Jornet had ended the record attempt, that he had been experiencing extreme dizziness and was advised by his doctor to stop the attempt. The record, set by Greek ultrarunning legend Yiannis Kouros in 1997, is 188.5 miles or 303.56 kilometres. Endurance News & Random Musings Stay Healthy. Be Boring. Tom Evans is an elite British ultrarunner. Having only recently devoted himself to running full-time – leaving the military to focus on athletics – as we got started, Tom said, “I'm really excited to share some of my knowledge, some of my wisdom that I've built up over my very short running career so far.” Tom made an incredible debut on the Ultra Trail Running scene when he placed 3rd in the gruelling Marathon des Sables in 2017 – a 251km multi-stage self-supported race across the desert – which was initially a bet with his former military mates in a pub that he could improve upon their position at Marathon des Sables the previous year. Tom stunned the ultra world once again in 2018, when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. Tom went on to place 3rd at one of the most competitive Ultra Trail races in the world – the 100 mile Western States Endurance Run in 2019 and followed it up with a win at the Tarawera 102km in February 2020 against a competitive field in New Zealand. Throughout this conversation Tom shared captivating anecdotes of his journey into ultrarunning and a wealth of information on his training that has taken him to where he is now. On this episode of Le Run Down I chatted with my good friend and training buddy Geoff McGregor. Growing up in British Columbia he took a liking to music and eventually got into endurance sports. It was through sport that he learned that hard work leads to positive results. Those same life lessons translated into the world of ultra running. I consider Geoff to be one of the strongest runners I know both through his ability to tackle big training weeks and also his mental toughness. He’s got a drive to succeed at everything he does, yet somehow always finds a way to make it fun and enjoyable for those around him. Tom Evans, a former British Army Captain, made an incredible debut on the Ultra Trail Running scene when he came 3rd in 2017 in the gruelling 251km Desert Ultra Marathon: des Sables. There's a great story behind this elite performance and debut which includes a bet with some of his former military mates in a pub. This third place finish was the best result of any European in the history of the Iconic Race. Tom astounded once again in 2018, when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. And from there Tom has gone from success to success. Tom made his debut in his first 100mile race in the other iconic event, The Western States in 2019. Tom picked up a podium spot coming home with a bronze medal to join his bronze medal from representing Great Britain in the World Ultra Trail running championships. During this episode Tom shares his highs, lows and learning from his remarkable career and there are so many learnings. There's some great tales including training with former featured performer of this show Zane Robertson whilst in Ethiopia as well as his big 6 hour run in Ethiopia plus so much more. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Michelle Barton, Ultra Runner and Co-Host of the Training For Ultra and Trail Runner Nation podcasts, joins us this week to talk about her experience and accomplishments with Ultra Trail Running. Michelle has run some incredible races including Badwater 135, from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney; the Javelina Jundred, a 100 mile self proclaimed desert trail run costume party; and Caballo Blanco joining the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico. She has also set over 24 course records. Michelle’s running appears in a chapter she wrote in Chicken Soup for the Soul, about her experience running Badwater 135 and the extreme challenges she dealt with to finish the race. In this episode, we talk to Michelle about how her love of the outdoors led to her running and how her running has taken on bigger and longer challenges over the years. And she also has words of encouragement for those who would like to dip their toes into the waters of Ultra Running.

https://youtu.be/vYApUL9Nay4 This week on Lift Heavy Run Long® we sit down with a friend who has a unique perspective on the sport of trail running. Lorrie Williams, who has a unique bond with damn near everybody who has ever had a blister while running on a trail, has come to be known as The Queen of Crew. Lorrie, having a hatred for running herself, has found a spot for herself in the trail running community by helping to care for the needs of participants in ultra races as they stumble into aid stations, virtually unable to take care of themselves. Those who have been under Lorrie's care, speak of her as if she is some sort of mythical character who just sort of popped-up, changed their clothes, fed them, took care of their ailments, and then promptly and assertively kicked their asses out of the chair and forced them to get back to work. To know Lorrie is to have an ally. She sincerely wishes the best for all the participants in the endurance races and knows that there is generally more at stake, on a personal level, than meets the eye. She is a gift to the trail and ultra community and whether you run a seven-minute mile or seventeen, she is willing to do whatever she can to help you have your best experience at a trail or ultra event. Lorrie Williams is a native of Midtown Memphis but has called Germantown TN home for the last 20 years. She is a Stay at Home Wife and Mom of one motivated Ultra Trail Running husband and two ridiculously athletic children. She has been a jack of all trades, including bartender, ballet teacher, yoga assistant and was last gainfully employed as a Certified Dental Assistant. She enjoys yoga and writing; tolerates finding dirty socks in between couch cushions and cleaning up dog vomit. She is an unabashed history nerd and passionately bores her family with historical trivia about whatever she happens to be reading at the moment. Nicknames include “Running Anti Christ” and “Bad Ass Crew Chief”. She collects random injured animals as her side hustle.
In this 3rd and final episode, we'll wrap up my epic interview with Gordy Ainsleigh. In true Gordy form, we'll hear some crazy stories about his time in school with professors who have only just retired from Western States. He tells the legendary tale of the chainsaw, why he started a Carnivore Club, and the Goat Doctor. He also gives a few pieces of advice for current and future chiropractic students, such as how to adjust a rib and why you shouldn't start a practice right out of school.
In this second installment of my interview with Gordy Ainsleigh, we learn a bit about the early influences in the life of the man who started the Western States 100 Endurance Race. You’ll hear his opinion on chiropractic philosophy & science, why he chose to attend Western States, and some *interesting* medical theories to say the least. Stay tuned for part 3 for more hilarious stories about his time in school.
The Western States ® 100-Mile Endurance Run is the world’s oldest 100-mile trail race. Starting in Squaw Valley, California and ending 100.2 miles later. Following the historic Western States Trail, runners climb more than 18,000 feet and descend nearly 23,000 feet before they reach the finish line at Placer High School in Gordy’s hometown of Auburn, California. It is held on the last weekend of June each year. I got to volunteer at the race and witness this spectacle of endurance last year, and was lucky enough to meet up with Gordy a couple of days later. In the next few episodes, you’ll hear my extended interview with Dr. Gordon Ainsleigh, which I recorded just after last year’s Western States 100. Part 1 In this portion of my interview, Gordy tells the story of how it all started, how the horses actually held him back, and why caffeine is a recipe for disaster in ultra runs.
For those out of the running jargon loop, an F.K.T. is the acronym for a “fastest known time” event. Generally orchestrated by a few brace souls who develop an event never run before to establish a record. Running a trail race that has never been attempted comes with a great deal of risk. Getting lost, being in inaccessible terrain for extended periods is very dangerous and not for the meek. Join us as we invite Charlie Engle back to share the exploits of his and Nickademus Hollon's attempt at the Sea to Sea Ultra F.K.T. project, an Ultratrail running event of over 140 miles of unforgiving terrain.www.naturalrunningnetwork.com
In this episode, Krissy Moehl, professional ultra trail runner, discusses her running background from high school through how she found ultrarunning as a senior in college working at Seattle Running Company. She shares what her first ultra, the Chuckanut 50k, taught her: never stop smiling. Krissy explains her work as longtime race director of the Chuckanut 50k. She describes one of the most memorable races of her career. Krissy gives the inside scoop on why Scott Jurek, a longtime friend of hers, is also her mentor. She recaps her recent FKT attempt of the John Muir Trail and how she plans to recover from the adventure. She reflects on how the ultra-trail running community inspires her and reveals upcoming travels and trail running adventures. Lastly, she provides advice for those new to running.
Ultra Trail Running is distinctly different in culture and mental preparation than other running or endurance sports. Veteran Trail Ultra Runner, Bob Crowley, visits with the Nation about what is unique about this sports culture. Is there a difference between "doing" an ultra run and "being" an ultra runner?
