Most networking advice feels awkward, outdated, or downright useless—until now. In this episode of Social Intelligence, AJ Harbinger and Johnny Dzubak hand you three conversation frameworks that eliminate the stress of small talk and turn fleeting chats into lasting relationships. Whether you dread mixers or freeze up trying to sell your value, this episode walks you through one opener, one value exchange, and one graceful exit line that make you the most memorable person in the room. Plus, you'll learn why your follow-up rates are failing—and how to fix them in under 30 seconds. What to Listen For [00:00:00] The "name badge invisibility" feeling and why mixers cause anxiety [00:02:00] Starter Line Framework: Make observations that spark real conversations [00:06:00] Value Exchange Framework: Flip small talk into collaboration [00:08:30] How to offer value without sounding salesy or forced [00:10:30] Client story: How one line turned a stranger into a business partner [00:13:30] The Peak-End Rule and how to leave people remembering you fondly [00:14:30] Follow-up hack: 25% boost in memory with a two-line recap [00:16:00] This week's challenge: Run the loop—starter, value, exit—and DM your results Episode Takeaways People consistently underestimate how much others like them—this is called the liking gap Use context-rich openers that are novel and observational to stand out in any crowd Instead of pitching, build bridges with value recognition and small favors A clear, appreciative exit is often the most memorable part of the interaction The Peak-End Rule means people judge conversations by the emotional high point and ending Write down just two lines after a conversation to increase your recall and follow-up success Preparing just three lines before a mixer can turn dread into confidence Great networking isn't about working the room—it's about running the loop with intent Tired of awkward handshakes and collecting business cards without building real connections? Brief Description Charisma isn't just for extroverts or performers—it's a scientific advantage that determines how often you're invited, trusted, and remembered. In this episode of Social Intelligence, AJ Harbinger and Johnny Dzubak reveal why people decide how they feel about you before they evaluate your skills, and how this hidden force might be keeping you from the promotions and relationships you deserve. Through the story of their client Brett—a high-performer who was passed over for promotion despite working harder than everyone else—AJ and Johnny break down why being skilled isn't enough when you're perceived as "cold and unapproachable." They share three counterintuitive, science-backed techniques that transformed Brett from invisible to magnetic in both his professional and social circles. If you've ever wondered why colleagues with average skills get all the credit, or why you keep hearing you're "great at what you do" but still feel invisible, this episode reveals the subtle signals of warmth and connection you might be missing. [00:00:00] Opening introduction to the hidden force of charisma [00:02:54] How charisma opens doors and makes everything easier [00:05:36] Why warmth is judged before competence (Princeton research) [00:07:37] The "processing face" problem that makes you seem unapproachable [00:08:31] How avoiding side conversations kills career opportunities [00:10:53] The Pratfall Effect: How small mistakes make you more likable [00:11:55] The Reflective Label Technique: Mirroring emotions to build connection [00:13:30] The Benjamin Franklin Effect: Why asking for help raises your status[00:16:41] Three-step challenge to boost your charisma this week People judge your warmth before they judge your skills—without warmth, your competence won't matter Mirror neurons fire when we converse, creating shared emotional states that build connection The "processing face" problem: When you're thinking deeply, your expressionless face makes others uncomfortable The Pratfall Effect: Competent people become more likable when they reveal a small flaw or vulnerability Reflective labeling shows emotional fluency and makes people feel deeply understood The Benjamin Franklin Effect: Asking for advice activates others' investment in you and raises your status Small acts of vulnerability build more authentic connections than maintaining a "mask of competence" The Art of Charm Social Intelligence ProgramLooking to quickly improve your social intelligence with support from AJ, Johnny, and their team? Today's guest on the show is relationship expert AJ Harbinger and co-host of the highly popular podcast, The Art of Charm which has over 200 million downloads and has featured guests such as myself, Tim Ferriss, Jay Shetty, and Kobe Bryant, and many others.    AJ has helped thousands of men and women from all around the world to overcome social anxiety, master conversation, develop social capital and build genuine relationships of the highest quality, as well as breakthrough large personal and professional mental blocks.   Like many, success did not come easy for AJ. Identifying as an introvert and Growing up without a Mother, this all quickly ignited some insecurities, pain, and anxiety, and struggled socially in school. As you can imagine, he felt a bit lost as a young adult and took a sabbatical after his undergrad for some self-discovery.   Encouraged by his father to get a job to stay motivated, he decided to take a job at a research lab and after having a research project go sideways unexpectedly, he was forced to make a decision.   He could either continue down this path of consistent disappointment or take a chance on himself to do something that would help him and others find fulfillment long term. On a mission to develop and cultivate true social skills and confidence, he co-founded the Art of Charm almost 15 years ago.   This of course didn't come without challenges as his Father passed away shortly after, whom he was incredibly close to and his Father also doubted his ability to make it in the podcast world.   He shares his incredible story of overcoming all of these hardships that came along before and after starting the podcast and of course chat about social skills.   Let's face it...developing confidence, emotional intelligence, and relationships are tough and take hard work. But, it can be done and there is an art in doing this. Today, you are going to learn tactical skills that you can apply right now to ensure that you are doing everything you can to improve your self-worth, build deep connections, and of course charm.    Topics discussed:   AJ's upbringing growing up with a single parent   How AJ's childhood affected his mental health   How AJ pivoted that adversity into something positive to help so many people   AJ's insight about being authentic, being real, and being yourself   AJ's advice for somebody who's thinking about doing something for the wrong reason   Struggles AJ faced without having his mom around   The types of things AJ started doing to cultivate confidence within himself when he started the show, The Art of Charm   What are the things that AJ does every single day that are non-negotiable for him to get himself feeling good   What AJ and his co-host do when the ratings of their program is not as high as they expected   What are a couple of non-negotiable things that people can do to be able to cultivate a deep, meaningful, in-person relationship with someone in 2000, as we're entering 2021?   AJ's advice for people when approaching someone at an event, at a seminar, or asking a guy or a girl out   What are some things people should say or not say, to get the other person to be more engaged with them   The top lessons AJ learned from someone: Who was it and what was the lesson? Takeaways:   “Look at any venture that you start and ask yourself, “How am I going to feel about this 10 days from now? How am I gonna feel about this 10 months from now? How am I gonna feel about this 10 years from now?” And if the answer is yes, excited, pumped. 10 months or 10 years later, then you've hit a goldmine. You've hit something that you're gonna have the passion, the motivation, and the drive to fulfill.” - AJ Harbinger   “We really made it a focal point to celebrate all the small victories along the way.” - AJ Harbinger   Your confidence is like a skyscraper.   Start out with a positive view of the day, and end your day with gratitude.   The difference between success and lack of success is between your ears.   You are constantly training your mind to focus on things whether you like them or not.   “If you're feeling like, ‘Wow. You know, I've had so many setbacks.' I would challenge you to pick up the phone and reach out to the people in your life that you care about.” - AJ Harbinger   Appreciation is actually telling people what you love about them, why you love having them in your life, why you really enjoy that relationship that person has brought to your life. And acceptance is actually inviting them to participate in your life.   The key ingredient in this formula is curiosity -- genuine curiosity.   The simplest way is to approach with gratitude and appreciation, and share with them.   “Who you surround yourself with, and the intentionality of your habits, your lifestyle, is what unlocks these extraordinary levels of success that we look up to.” - AJ Harbinger Connect with AJ Harbinger:   Website: https://theartofcharm.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theartofcharm/    Twitter: https://twitter.com/theartofcharm   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS2wqxYdqjnHkkfc90g169g   Connect with Doug   Instagram: www.instagram.com/dougbopst   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dougbopst   Website: www.dougbopst.com/   Private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/690686891674188

Johnny Dzubak is an author and co-founder of The Art of Charm, a podcast and coaching platform that deals with relationship coaching. Johnny alongside AJ Harbinger uses their podcast as a tool to help their listeners in realizing their full self-potential and build a dream life they’re proud of.  Diversification of CommunicationThe internet is still in its Wild West phase; different information and media platforms like podcasts, blogs, social media are still trying to take control. Johnny compares the current internet power squabble to the fight that’s been happening between different communication platforms over the ages. For example, with the invention of the printing press, Martin Luther famously quoted the power that people gained through personally translating the Bible. Radios and Televisions are the other mediums that came in and revolutionized how information is fed to the masses.  With the power now shifting to internet-based information sharing platforms; bloggers, podcasters, writers, SM influencers and vloggers now command a lot of communication authority. It’s important now more than ever for the ones vested with this tremendous power to learn personal responsibility and engage only in positive information sharing.  Growth of the Podcast With the growth of the internet, Johnny and his Co-host identified the rise of a need for technically advanced men to seek advice on how to flirt with girls online. This marked the launch and successful growth of the Art of Charm Podcast as a reliable source where young men acquired dating and relationship tips. Their platform has ever since grown to be a source for general relationship advice, with Johnny and AJ leveraging on their 11+ years of coaching experience to share practices, stories, and strategies to empower their listeners and clients.  Growth Mindset. The reason life gets tougher is that our bodies stop growing, and begin to age. Whilst growth is characterized by passion, enthusiasm, speed, and strength; ageing on the other hand is characterized by a slow ride down the hill where our bodies and minds get frailer with every passing day.  There’s still hope though. If you can find other ways to continue growing, you not only slow your ageing, but also reverse the negative effects of old age into positive continuous growth for your body, mind and spirit.  Rather than trying to fight the downhill journey by tooth and nail, you can leverage the following strategies to keep your growth pattern high and steady;Keep your physical stamina high by going to the gym and exercising more often. Remember to eat more consciously too. Emotional growth can be sustained by showing more interest in human experience. Research and learn how to compensate for your weaknesses by finding and leveraging your strengths. Mental growth - Take new opportunities to keep learning. A philosophical journey encompasses your personal inner relationship; finding out more about your life’s purpose including what drives and scares you.  For intellectual stimulation to occur, one has to adopt a growth mindset. Constantly expose yourself to new ideas, and learn to filter out concepts that you do not need, and only remain with the ones that serve your growth.  Seek better ways to grow socially too. We as human beings are naturally social creatures. What brings us joy more than anything is our service to others. Link your purpose to servitude, and you’ll experience tremendous joy in all three aspects of your life.  The journey to self-Knowledge. Learning to know yourself is no easy task. However, the self-growth tools that have existed for countless generations, are still present to date. Such tools include; mediation, gratitude practise, focus, value-based living and servitude.. Like everything in nature, humans too, have their dark sides. People who end up being successful, happy or masters of their crafts, are the ones who have learnt to accept their flaws, and constantly work on how to become better people. We all grow up in different environments, which result in different characters and personalities. We thus owe it to ourselves to reflect and understand our past environments, list down the strengths and weaknesses that have resulted from them, and learn how to embrace and grow from it all.  It can be intimidating to face your fears and weaknesses, but as an entrepreneur, you tend to wear a lot of hats, and the best way forward, is to face your incompetence for continued personal and professional growth.   Johnny’s superpower. The ability to observe. Johnny takes the time to observe with all his senses and takes in emotional bids from every situation. Our emotions, tied to how we connect with other people, determine how much we take in, process, and understand about other people. Learn to listen with both your ears and eyes. Notice the small things about other people, and you’ll accomplish wonders through emotional connections. Timestamps. 01:14 The growth of podcasting05:13 About the podcast06:00 Relationship advice07:47 Learning to keep growing in life. 11:43 Knowing thyself.15:35 Johnny’s journey growing up20:48 Johnny’s self-developed and career journey. 26:00 More of what Johnny’s services are29:17 Johnny’s superpower32:46 Breaking out of the herd as an entrepreneur Quotes. With the power vested in our hands to share information. It’s important we step up and take responsibility to share information for the good of humanity. Work on yourself and get better, not only will you bring in more ladies to the table, but better relationships and a better life.Don’t be afraid to learn and try new ideas. Some will hurt you, and others will build you. Learn to take in only what you need, and evolve by learning more ideas every day. What brings us the most joy, is our service to others. If we don’t focus on understanding and changing our core beliefs, then it’s impossible to find the answers we’re looking for in life. The most successful people are the ones that have learnt how to accept their dark side. They embrace their flaws and work on them to be better. With the technology we have, there’s no reason to can’t do what you're passionate about, whilst still learning new things.  Connect with Johnny.  Website - https://theartofcharm.com/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/TheArtOfCharm   Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theartofcharm/?hl=en LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/theartofcharm Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-art-of-charm/id212382281

AJ Harbinger is one of the world’s top relationship development experts. His company, The Art of Charm, is a leading training facility for top performers that want to overcome social anxiety, develop social capital and build relationships of the highest quality.   Raised by a single father, AJ felt a strong desire to learn about relationships and the elements that make them successful. However, this interest went largely untapped for many years. Following the path set out for him by his family, AJ studied biology in college and went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology at the University of Michigan. It was at this time that he began to feel immense pressure from the cancer lab he worked in and began to explore other outlets for expression. It was at this point that The Art of Charm Podcast was born. The Art of Charm Podcast would go on to become one of the largest and most successful lifestyle podcasts in the world. What started out as two graduate students conversing and laughing in a basement in Ann Arbor has turned into a top rated podcast and highly sought after coaching business.    Today, AJ and his co-founders teach people from all over the world how to create, develop, and maintain top business and personal relationships. It is often said that the best learning can be found in teaching a subject – for AJ, it was in coaching others towards success, that he was able to rekindle his own confidence and passion. The love of science and the desire to understand relationships at an elemental level had stopped being separate paths and interests for AJ and now merged into a single focus.      From an early age, Johnny Dzubak was driven by passion.  He grew up in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, a town strongly associated with coal mining, and in a family that had been solidly blue-collar since it had come over from the Old World.  Over the last 40 years, many of these towns have become economically devastated, and Greensburg was no different.  Searching for an opportunity, Johnny left home at the age of 21 for Chapel Hill, North Carolina.   There, Johnny worked in promotions and publicity for musicians and shows and learned the art of persuasion and influence. But boredom crept in and Johnny began to take an interest in self-development.  Never one to take things lightly, he went “all in” and began reading and learning about the subject voraciously.   The research into self-development, combined with this on-the-ground experience dealing with people on a daily basis, led to a gig, as Johnny took a part-time position up in DC helping a personal development company with weekend boot camps.  One fateful weekend, Jordan and AJ Harbinger were visiting the program that Johnny just happened to be a part of as an instructor and as “fate” would have it, spent time that weekend becoming fast friends and discussing plans of what would become the mission of the Art of Charm.   Part of what Johnny has always loved about music is the ability to create lasting art.  At the Art of Charm he gets to work with people, and instead of tuning guitar strings, he’s strengthening heart strings.  He’s creating art within people, by having them seek out what they are passionate about in direct ways, by confronting the past, to calibrate a present, to achieve a future.  It’s not music you can hear, but it is the changes you can see.  While he doesn’t believe he has all the answers, he certainly has quite a few, and he’s dedicated to continuing to study and never being satisfied with where he is either personally or professionally.   They speak with us about personal development, partnership and propinquity.   theartofcharm.com   The Rundown On The Road Gino’s Birthday Pittsburg Music Industry Uncertainty Hard Questions Self Development Graduate School Who You Know Podcasting Partnership New York City Generosity Providing Value Listening Developing Relationships Self Expression Psychology Silence is Golden Media Merry-Go-Round Airplane Mode 5 Listening Skills Analytical/Emotional Coaching Engagement Core Values Small Talk Inexperience Distractions Presence Self Sabotage Coping Mechanisms Excuses Credibility Propinquity Builds Trust Habits For Success   Check out our Upcoming Live Events!   Subscribe to our Youtube Channel for lots of great content!   Buy our new book The Honey Bee! To many of us, the word values can sound like a buzzword thrown around in corporate-speak via emails and quarterly earnings calls - but individual values, once understood, can lead to a future of incredible potential, so what are the values we're referring to, and what can you do to determine your values so you can live the life you've always wanted? What to Listen ForWhy is it important for each of us to determine our individual values, and how does living by those values help you to not make terrible decisions? How do you choose your values? What is the problem with goals, and why is the setting of goals not enough? What questions can you ask yourself to determine some of your basic values? How do you decide on company values, and why is it important for your company's success to find employees who share those values? What are the company values of the Art of Charm? How did AJ Harbinger determine his values and how have they guided him to success? Why does more discipline in your life lead to more freedom? How did Johnny Dzubak determine his values and have they guided him to success? What exercises can you implement today to track whether or not you are living by your values? If you don't choose the script for your life, others will do it for you, and there's no guarantee the script will be conducive to your happiness and fulfillment in life. Your script is dictated by your values, and you can either decide what your values are and live an intentional life driven by them, or you can live a life that is subject to the values of others. If you choose not to choose and understand your values, it can result in a life of self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and being used by the people around you who are firm in their values or know how to take advantage of people who don't stand for anything. AJ has become one of the world’s top relationship development experts, and his company, the Art of Charm has become a leading training facility for top performers that want to overcome social anxiety, develop social capital and build relationships of the highest quality.   So, true story: almost everyone on my team here at Happen to Your Career is an introvert. (Myself included!)   Which is kind of surprising for a company that teaches people all about how to use relationship-building and presentation skills to create new opportunities in your professional life, right?   Well, contrary to popular belief, we introverts aren’t completely socially anxious and hiding ourselves away in a closet somewhere. (Most of the time.)   We (and I’m sure you, or people you know) have learned the skills to gracefully survive in a socially-oriented world while still creating space for our “me” time.   But one of the things that can feel the hardest for introverts is also one of the ones that makes conversations the most fulfilling.   The vulnerability of putting yourself out there (whether you’re an introvert or extravert) is part of what creates deep, meaningful, awesome connection.   And connection is why we’re all here, isn’t it?   If you agree, you’re going to love this week’s podcast on vulnerability and how to connect with anyone with AJ Harbinger of The Art of Charm.   I think this episode has the most value per minute of any podcast I’ve ever recorded, so if you are a person who loves self-development and wants to be a better conversationalist, you’ve gotta take a listen.   I consider myself to be pretty good at striking up conversations, and I found myself taking tons of mental notes.   In this episode, you’ll learn: How to use vulnerability as your stealth superpower The 3 phases of connection: an analytical framework for creating emotional interaction (yes, really) How your past, present and future create the stories we tell ourselves -- and share with the world
