Jessica Kriegel, Chief Science Officer at Culture Partners, lost her father two days after he came home for good — and spent the next year drinking to forget it. What pulled her out wasn't hustle. It was surrender. Jessica is the Chief Science Officer of Culture Partners, a global workplace consulting firm that drives results for some of the world's largest organizations. She's also the author of Surrender to Lead and host of the CEO Daily Brief podcast. Her research sits at the intersection of culture, belief systems, and measurable business outcomes. In this episode, Kwame and Jessica unpack why the need to control is quietly destroying results — and why the fastest path to what you want requires you to give up the illusion you ever had control in the first place. What if your team's biggest problem… ISN'T behavior? What if it's belief? Seriously. Because in this conversation, workplace culture expert Dr. Jessica Kriegel drops one of the most important leadership truths we've heard on DREAM THINK DO in a LONG time: "People act in alignment with their beliefs." BOOM. And once you hear her unpack that idea… you'll never think about leadership, accountability, workplace culture, or even your own behavior the same way again. Jessica is the Chief Strategy Officer at Culture Partners, former VP of Workplace Culture at Oracle, keynote speaker, podcast host, and co-author of the upcoming book Surrender to Lead. She's spent years helping organizations—from Fortune 100 companies to hospitals to manufacturing plants—transform culture from the inside out. But what makes this conversation so powerful isn't just the research… It's the honesty. Because Jessica doesn't just talk about culture. She talks about fear. Control. Burnout. Micromanagement. Faith. Surrender. And the exhausting pressure so many leaders quietly carry every single day. Including a moment where she made a radically transparent leadership decision during company-wide layoffs… and it completely changed the outcome. (Seriously… this story alone is worth the listen.) This episode is practical, deeply human, and packed with powerful insights on: Why most leaders are stuck in "The Action Trap" How fear quietly shapes workplace behavior And why surrender—not control—often leads to the BEST results If you've ever felt overwhelmed trying to lead people, influence culture, or carry responsibility well… this conversation is going to hit home. What if the reason you feel exhausted as a leader isn't your team… your workload… or even your business? What if it's the illusion of control? Many leaders believe they need to manage every behavior, track every metric, and constantly push for performance. Yet the harder they try to control outcomes, the more disconnected their teams become. In this episode, George welcomes Dr. Jessica Kriegel, a leading organizational culture expert and author of Surrender to Lead, to explore why so many leaders and entrepreneurs feel burned out while still struggling to get the results they want from their teams. Jessica shares why traditional leadership approaches, focused on control, compliance, and constant oversight, often create more problems than they solve. Instead of driving engagement, they create pressure, fear, and disengagement. Together, George and Jessica break down how leaders can move from control-based leadership to trust-based leadership, where ownership, alignment, and culture naturally grow. This episode dives deep into leadership psychology, workplace culture, trust, and personal accountability, giving leaders practical frameworks to build teams that operate from ownership instead of obligation. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why leaders often burn out trying to control what they cannot control The difference between compliance-based leadership vs commitment-based leadership How workplace culture is shaped by leadership behavior, not policies Why surrendering control actually creates stronger teams The hidden cost of micromanagement and over-optimization How leaders can build trust and psychological safety inside organizations The mindset shift required to lead from empowerment rather than pressure Key Takeaways: ✔️Control creates resistance. The more leaders try to force outcomes, the more teams disengage. ✔️Culture is not built through policies, it's built through daily leadership behavior. ✔️The illusion of control often drives leader burnout and frustration. ✔️Teams perform better when leaders focus on alignment and trust rather than compliance. ✔️Ownership grows when people feel psychologically safe to contribute ideas and solutions. ✔️Micromanagement reduces creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. ✔️Leaders who surrender control gain something far more powerful: commitment. In this episode, I sit down with Jessica Kriegel, a culture strategist, speaker, and former Chief Scientist of Workplace Culture at Culture Partners. Jessica has spent years studying what actually drives performance inside organizations, and she brings research backed clarity to a topic most leaders still struggle to operationalize. Together, we break down why culture is not a soft concept, but the single most powerful lever leaders have to drive results, including up to four times revenue growth when purpose, strategy, and culture are fully aligned. Jessica shares a practical framework for turning culture into a business system, not a poster on the wall. We unpack why most culture efforts fail, how beliefs shape behavior more than processes ever will, and what leaders must stop doing if they want real accountability. This conversation is grounded, actionable, and designed for leaders who want measurable outcomes, not motivational fluff. Key takeaways: Culture is how people think and act to get results, not a list of values or perks Companies with full alignment between purpose, strategy, and culture grow four times faster than those without it Clarity beats complexity when defining purpose and direction Beliefs drive behavior more than policies, processes, or procedures True accountability is a personal choice, not a blame mechanism Most organizations spend the majority of their time below the line in blame and excuses Recognition, storytelling, and feedback are the fastest ways to shape beliefs Surrendering control creates stronger commitment and better long term results Leaders cannot force alignment, but they can design experiences that invite it This episode is for CEOs, founders, executives, people leaders, and anyone responsible for driving performance through other people. If you are frustrated that your culture initiatives are not translating into results, or if you feel like you are managing compliance instead of commitment, this conversation will change how you lead. You will walk away with simple language, a clear framework, and specific actions you can apply immediately to build a culture that actually drives growth. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Jessica notes that the trade environment is like “driving through fog,” and is happy to see any good news.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Jessica Kriegel discusses the “overlooked” March jobs report from this morning. She emphasizes that this shows the power of narrative over good data: despite the better-than-expected number, the market is still consumed by tariff news. In this riotous episode of The Chad & Cheese Podcast, the boys drag Dr. Jessica Kriegel, Culture Partners' Chief Strategy Officer, into the clown car of post-COVID work woes. They tackle the return-to-office (RTO) brouhaha like it's a bad slapstick routine—is it a heroic charge back to the water cooler, or are we all just pratfalling into 2019 with pants that don't fit anymore? Dr. Kriegel's swinging the “adapt or flop” hammer, dubbing RTO a dusty VHS tape in a streaming world. The gang cackles over how Gen Z's “work-from-bed” energy is giving Boomer bosses heartburn, while leading via Zoom feels like herding cats on a dial-up connection. RTO's sneaky sucker punch to diversity and inclusion gets a guffaw too—turns out mandating face time might mean fewer faces that don't look like the CEO's golf buddies. Dr. Kriegel lays it on thick: COVID flipped the script on everyone, and companies still doing the pre-pandemic tango are basically dancing with a mop. She paints a hilarious picture of the C-suite vs. HR showdown—CEOs chasing shareholder high-fives like it's a pie-eating contest, while HR's stuck mopping up a mental health meltdown with a paper towel and a prayer. Tech's the unsung hero keeping remote work from being a total farce, but those corporate silos? They're like cubicle Berlin Walls—good luck getting a memo over ‘em. And don't get her started on the “me first” corporate vibe—it's less “teamwork makes the dream work” and more “every suit for himself.” The talent market's a dumpster fire, unions are either flexing or fumbling like a bad stand-up act, and upskilling's your only shot at not being the punchline when the layoffs hit. Takeaways? Trust your slackers have a pulse, morph your culture before it fossilizes, and don't bank on CEOs sticking around—turnover's so high they're practically on a conveyor belt to the exits. Stephanie Guichard says it's easy for pessimism to prevail following today's consumer confidence report. However, she says there's good sentiment buried in it that investors missed. Jessica Kriegel believes the biggest drag on trading today comes from uncertainty around the economic outlook. My guest for Episode #292 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Dr. Jessica Kriegel, Chief Strategy Officer of Workforce and Labor at Culture Partners and an internationally recognized speaker. Episode page with video, transcript, and more Known for her transformative 'Culture Equation,' Jessica has been featured on CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, and more. At Culture Partners, she leads pioneering research and strategy with Stanford University, working to reshape the DNA of Fortune 10 and 500 companies for long-term success. Jessica holds a doctorate in Human Resources Development and Educational Leadership from Drexel University and is the author of Unfairly Labeled, a book that challenges generational stereotypes in the workplace. She also hosts the podcast "Culture Leaders," where she dives into the essence of true transformation. In this episode, Jessica shares insights on leadership, culture transformation, and her unique journey through pivotal career experiences. Jessica discussed her favorite mistake—a whirlwind promotion at Oracle to Head of Strategy for the Head of Cloud, a role she describes as "seven promotions" above her current position at the time. Although the experience quickly led to burnout due to overwhelming demands and a relentless work pace, it also became one of her most transformative learning experiences. Jessica credits those six intense weeks as the foundation for her "Culture Equation" framework, which she has since applied to drive organizational change and foster alignment between purpose, strategy, and culture. The conversation also explored the critical role of leadership in shaping workplace culture and addressing challenges like burnout, disengagement, and generational stereotypes. Jessica emphasized that culture is fundamentally about how people think and act to achieve results, and leaders must align beliefs and behaviors to operationalize strategy. She shared her perspectives on overcoming employee disengagement, fostering innovation through psychological safety, and breaking free from generational labeling in the workplace. Jessica also discussed her TED Talk, "How to Help People Give a Shit," highlighting how employees' perceived apathy often stems from overwhelm and a lack of agency rather than genuine disinterest. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Would you say six weeks is an unusually fast burnout cycle? Was the 3 a.m. call part of a broader pattern of disrespect or just a one-off incident? Are these patterns common across organizations, or are they specific to individual leaders? How do you define culture? Did you face challenges getting your TED Talk title approved? What advice do you have for leaders to address this challenge of employee disengagement? How do you see leaders' perceptions of mistakes influencing workplace culture? What led you to write your book Unfairly Labeled? How do you think generational stereotypes impact workplace dynamics? Do you believe evolving workplace expectations are driven more by technology than generational differences?
Jessica Kriegel, Chief Strategy Officer at Culture Partners, is an author, podcast host, and culture expert. She joins the podcast to explore the many trend predictions for 2025, forecast which ones are likely to stick, and discuss how L&D professionals can anticipate changes to their roles. The conversation delves into the evolving use of AI tools, the future of middle managers, and why the five-day return-to-office (RTO) trend isn't as daunting as it seems. Jessica's insights provide a roadmap of trends that deserve your attention, and practical recommendations to navigate both the expected and unexpected in the year ahead. Jessica Kriegel and Lisa Flicker react to the December jobs report, which blew past expectations. Jessica thinks employers have “unpaused” since the election with uncertainty in the market removed. Lisa says hiring is becoming more selective and reflects the expectation of higher interest rates. Today, we're talking about work. Specifically, where we work, how our expectations of working remotely were radically changed by the pandemic, and how those expectations feel like they're on the verge of changing yet again. For many people, the pendulum has swung wildly between working fully remote and now a push to return to the office from their bosses, and there are a lot of theories about what might really be motivating big companies to try and bring everyone back. To explain it, I caught up with two experts on the subject: Stephan Meier, a professor of business strategy at Columbia Business School, and Jessica Kriegel, the chief strategy officer at workplace culture consultancy Culture Partners. We dive into what's been happening to the nature of work today, and whether Amazon, which just announced a major return to the office five days a week, is part of a bigger trend. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week, I'm joined by Jessica Kriegel. She is the Chief Scientist of Workplace Culture for Culture Partners, leading research and strategy in best practices for driving results through culture. For 15+ years, Jessica has been guiding global, national, Fortune 100, and other organizations across finance, technology, real estate, and healthcare industries on the path to creating intentional cultures that accelerate performance. And she has a book coming out called The Culture Equation, where she dives into how people think and act to get results. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… leaders who want to improve company culture. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… what does it take to build a thriving company culture? In this episode, Jessica shares her findings and explains why traditional corporate structures aren't cutting it anymore. She shares how leaders can create a more people-first approach that drives engagement and results. Key Takeaways: Stereotypes around how Gen Z and millennials impact the workforce are keeping leaders from actually seeing these employees on their team as people. Jessica says it's not about understanding different generations but about understanding life stages. Culture isn't a task that can be delegated to HR. Leaders need to be closely involved in shaping it. Leaders must be adaptable to the evolving needs of their teams. Focusing on what's in your control gets you out of the blame game and into your sphere of influence. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Jessica's technique to encourage accountability in her team is to model above-the-line thinking. She breaks it down into these four steps: see it, own it, solve it, do it. Are generational labels dead weight? This week—after many technical difficulties and a nearly-forgotten anniversary—Kurt talks with organizational culture expert Jessica Kriegel about generational divides and why they are ultimately pointless and unproductive for both personal and professional growth. Jessica introduces her “culture equation” framework, revealing three critical elements that drive revenue growth and how missing these elements can lead to stagnation. A key focus of the conversation is the damaging impact of generational stereotypes in the workplace and how ageism, in any form, prevents us from recognizing people's unique talents. Through compelling examples, Jessica explains how these stereotypes dangerously influence workplace practices—and what we can do to avoid them. Tim is back from anniversary-dinner bliss for this week's grooving session, where he and Kurt reflect on the key themes from Kurt's conversation with Jessica. The duo offers insights on the power of thoughtful communication and how being intentional with our words can shape organizational culture. Whether you're a Boomer, Gen Z'er, or anything in between (sorry Gen X and Milennials), this episode has all you need to challenge stereotypes and start bridging those generational gaps. © 2024 Behavioral Grooves Topics [0:00] Generational stereotypes and corporate culture [6:20] Speed round with Jessica Kriegel [9:10] Generational labels: a perspective [23:25] The “Culture Equation” and it's impact on success [28:41] The importance of leadership for shaping culture [36:52] How to align purpose, strategy, and culture [42:25] Grooving Session: Bridging generational divides with leadership © 2024 Behavioral Grooves Links Unfairly Labeled: How Your Workplace Can Benefit From Ditching Generational Stereotypes How to get people to give a sh*t | Jessica Kriegel | TEDxStGeorgeStudio Is Generational Prejudice Seeping into Your Workplace?
