In this episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, Andy Lopata hosts Jennifer Sunberg, a former Ernst & Young London Entrepreneur of the Year and the Co-CEO of Board Intelligence. Her new book, co-authored with Pippa Begg, "Collective Intelligence: Build a Business That's Smarter Than You," encourages incorporating greater collective intelligence in businesses. Theconversation revolves around how businesses can promote intelligence and innovative thinking, not just from the business leaders but from everyone involved. Jennifer points out that many leaders assume their intelligence and ideas are solely responsible for business success, forgetting the power that lies in the team's collective brainpower. Being overly reliant on a superstar leader can hinder real progress. These leaders might be amazing, but their brilliance doesn't necessarily mean the business's success is solely dependent on them. Jennifer cites well-established organisations like Apple and Amazon as examples, revealing that some of their game-changing decisions like the iPhone and Amazon Prime did not come directly from Steve Jobs or Jeff Bezos but from their respective teams. The challenge lies in enabling everyone in a business to contribute ideas without fear of criticism or backlash. Jennifer believes that fostering a culture of humility and questioning is crucial for developing collective intelligence. Leaders must operate from an understanding that they don't know everything. She argues for a change in the predominant focus on having answers to fostering an environment that encourages asking questions. The downside of a top-led approach involves speed, waste, and hubris. Restricting decision-making power to a single person slows response time in a fast-paced business environment. Not tapping into the intelligence of all team members creates intellectual waste. Andy and Jennifer discuss the power of curiosity, the importance of reverse mentoring, providing truthful information even when it is not easy, and the need to normalise learning from failures. Jennifer states that asking simple questions, particularly the 'how' and 'why', can lead to a deeper understanding of issues and challenges. She further explains that using questions as tools for genuine inquiry and understanding can prove more valuable than using them as weapons.  Andy and Jennifer also highlight the importance of clear and concise communication, stressing how the right kind of communication can enhance the collective intelligence of a group. Jennifer touches upon the concept of asking 'why', 'so what', and 'now what' questions. Finally, they emphasise the importance of maintaining the right focus in the face of multiple new ideas, and the pitfalls that can occur when collective intelligence doesn't find a receptive audience. Jennifer suggests that shared critical thinking and questioning are required to avoid negative outcomes.  Jennifer shares thought-provoking anecdotes, personal experiences, and scholarly wisdom, ensuring that by the end of the conversation, you'll view leadership through a new, enlightening lens. Any time spent watching chimpanzees is valuable; they show tool use, complex social structures and behaviours, and, according to the latest science, are often quite adorable. It's no surprise that humans are fascinated by chimpanzees, as we share 98.8 percent of our DNA with them. But how humans treat chimpanzees isn't always positive. Chimps are still poached for meat and are kept as pets or entertainment. On social media, chimps are dressed up, paraded about, and earn significant revenue for their owners and social media platforms. Tragically, these platforms have little in place to protect potentially exploited animals, and that's something Dr. Jake Brooker wants to see change. A research associate at Durham University, working at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage Trust, Dr. Brooker is studying the behaviour of rescued chimpanzees who were taken from the pet and bushmeat trades. In a recent article on TheConversation.com, Dr. Brooker outlined the realities chimps face as a result of social media and the ongoing plight of wild chimpanzees. To share more about his experiences with the chimpanzees of Chimfunshi, what he's learning about their incredible behaviour, emotional lives, and social structures, and how animal lovers can help protect chimpanzees, Dr. Brooker joins Defender Radio. Are Our Political Rivals As Bad As We Think They Are?For the great majority of my life I had no interest in politics. It was not until after 9/11 that I had any interest whatsoever in anything any politician had to say. The only thing about politics I was certain of was that I didn't want anything to do with politics. For many that I knew, their stories were similar. In the past decade, or decade and a half, that has steadily been changing. People across the political spectrum are becoming more entrenched in their political beliefs, maybe overconfident in their beliefs, and allowing their political beliefs to become part of their core identities. For some, lines have been drawn and their political rivals are now thought of as enemies. I believe though, the question must be asked; are our political rivals as bad as we think they are?Who is Daniel F. Stone?A short time back I came across a fascinating article when searching topics for the work I do in the depolarization space. I knew immediately that the author of "Your political rivals aren't as bad as you think – here's how misunderstandings amplify hostility", found at theConversation.com, was someone who I wanted to speak with.Dan Stone is an Associate Professor of Economics that has been teaching in the Economics department at Bowdoin since 2012 and prior to that I was assistant professor at Oregon State University from 2008-2012. Dan's research is on belief formation, political media, polarization, and inter-personal hostility (a.k.a. affective polarization).  Dan's recently released book, "Undue Hate" dives in to "How to understand the mistakes we make about those on the other side of the political spectrum—and how they drive the affective polarization that is tearing us apart."Learn more about and connect with Daniel F. Stone by checking out the full show notes for this episode at DerateTheHate.com. What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? Missing pieces of the puzzle can cause it all to fall apart.  You can create new puzzle pieces. Connecting the pieces can make a beautiful picture. The displaying of the picture takes epoxy, a frame and care. One misstep can cause the pieces to fall, and when falling to pieces, is it a piece that we are missing or have we put pieces together in the wrong order? This week on episode one hundred eighty nine the guys discuss the pieces of the helping yourself puzzle. Putting yourself back together is a do it yourself, no one is going to save you project. The wisdom to be gained is outside, but integrating it is an inside job. Just like gasoline is only potential power and unless you pour it into a combustion engine it won't do what it is intended to do.  This we week we also mention the fine art of kintsugi. This technique of repairing broken pottery is an extension of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the philosophy of finding the beauty in transience, imperfection and simplicity. This great article from the blog, The Conversation will help you understand.  Some questions to ponder this week; what pieces are you missing? What pieces no longer fit? Is ignorance really bliss when the pieces are falling apart? What do you recognize that no longer fits and are you ready to create new pieces? Does healing ever end?
