AARP found that 41% of Black adults have been targeted by scammers. People of other racial and ethnic backgrounds are also targeted at about the same percentage rate, but this is the first time AARP has studied in detail the types of scams that target the Black community. They found that 21% of African Americans who were targets of a scam lost money and 60% of them reported that they lost money more than once. Tiffany Jackson says she's been targeted by a scammer before. It all started when she inquired about a small business loan online. Eventually, she and the person, who she thought was legitimate, started communicating by phone. “So, then, we started going back-and-forth through the text messages and he was like, ‘oh, you're approved for $10,000.' Trauma has a massive impact on our psyche. So much so, in fact, that our brains can suppress memories of trauma in order to cope. This is not uncommon and can affect many trauma survivors. Tiffany Jackson, a strong, beautiful mother and trauma survivor, recounts her trauma on the show today and speaks into her repressed memories of trauma, how she coped when her trauma came to light, and how she perceives her trauma in the present day. In our discussion, Tiffany and I connect through our shared trauma and speak to the trauma that impacted us most and why. Tiffany goes into some of the trauma she experienced and how she achieved resilience and peace after this trauma through self-love. Because of a suicide attempt, Tiffany shares, she was led to a wonderful therapist who invited healing into her heart and gave her the support she needed. She speaks into how she stays resilient through trust in her own strength and trust in the journey she is on to peace. Tiffany explains the energy healing tactics she has used to overcome her trauma, such as EMDR, body code, and meditating. As a survivor of childhood abuse and a mother of three, Tiffany shares how she clings to self-love in order to protect her own children from the pain of her past. Tiffany and I discuss how trauma impacts us at different times in our lives and in different ways. We remind each other and listeners that they are never alone and that there is empowerment, love, peace, and healing in the future. Kaytee and Meredith are back in your earbuds this week to bring you Episode 38, including a few literary confessions or demerits. We have a few important announcements right at the top of the show, one of which requires your help, listeners! Send us your Ask Us Anything questions via email, Direct Message, or as a comment on show notes, and we’ll feature them in a future episode! If we use your question, we’ll send you a coveted Currently Reading bookmark (and our everlasting thanks, of course). You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: an indie bookstore day recap and a bookish “retirement” gift. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We both read quite a few books that we REALLY loved this week, so don’t hesitate to use those show notes below! For our deep dive this week, we have decided to give ourselves bookish “demerits” a la Gretchen Rubin’s Happier podcast. These are places in our reading lives where we think we could improve. Sometimes we commiserate with each other and sometimes we chide each other! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week we are talking about a fantastic mystery/police procedural, and a multi-generational family saga. Adult listeners wishing to destroy their livers are welcome to play the “Edit!” drinking game as Brenna and Joe lament the inept job that Random House UK did in shepherding a 15 year old’s online serial into a book. Thankfully Vince Marcello’s 2018 film adaptation fares better, although both texts contain abhorrent depictions of “fantasy romances” that young girls should steer far, FAR away from. Plus: Joe finally delivers on his promise to check out the Syfy adaptation of Rick Remender & Wesley Craig's graphic novel Deadly Class to mixed results, while Brenna strongly recommends Tiffany Jackson's unreliable narrator thrillers, Allegedly and Monday’s Not Coming.
