While the New York Knicks are on the precipice of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals, said development neatly coincides with Erik and Lyle Menendez (shown above sitting courtside at a 1990 Knicks game) being eligible for parole, there is the likelihood, however slim, the convicted parent-slayers might actually be front and center when Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Townes et al capture New York's first NBA Championship in 52 years. Of course, this would require someone else being supplanted from Celebrity Row and today's program will consider who is the best self-obsessed candidate to get the heave-ho.  It really should not take two hours to determine MICHAEL RAPAPORT is the obvious choice (while he's not a double murderer, he's been murdering acting, sports yak and world affairs commentary for longer than anyone cares to remember) and that's very good because I had to find some way of cramming in nearly two hours of music this week.  Current events be damned, with the possible exception of The Damned's local appearance this Saturday night (which neatly coincides with my referring to Jalen Brunson as Captain Sensible).

This week, Andrew Culture is joined by Dr. San to answer the all-important question: what do Viz magazine, squirrel-based hip-hop folklore, and Captain Sensible have to do with sunglasses? A lot, apparently. From tales of tragically inebriated rodents to obscure country pastiches and mid-80s goth crooners, we dive eyeballs-first into a lens-tinted trip through musical mayhem.Expect a lovingly detailed discussion on Viz's Buster Gonad and the gang, a passionate defence of Ray Orbison's vocal blanket, ZZ Top's fraudulent tour as The Zombies, and the serious existential implications of Skepta's lyrics: "I can't see anything." Same, mate. The riffs are glorious, the tangents are ridiculous, and the jokes? Almost clever. Almost.Whether you love Skeeter Davis or just want to hear two aging music nerds trying to remember why the 2004 Viz movie was a thing, this is your stop. Just don't Google blue waffle.

MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Born in Brooklyn and raised in Massapequa, New York, Phantom grew up listening to his parents' jazz records and began playing drums by the age of ten. He took lessons with Mousie Alexander, who played with Benny Goodman, studying jazz and working through books by Jim Chapin and Ted Reed. By the late 1970s, he was playing in bands with his childhood friend, bassist Lee Rocker. They soon joined forces with guitarist Brian Setzer to form Stray Cats.[ When performing with Stray Cats, Phantom did not sit behind a standard drum kit like most drummers, but instead opted to play in a standing position with a minimalist set-up of bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat, and crash cymbal. During downtime from Stray Cats, Phantom played in swing, rockabilly, and jump blues combo The Swing Cats with Rocker and ex-Polecats guitarist Danny B. HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersWhile many bands proclaim to be the real deal when it comes to punk rock, very few can say so definitively. Punk rock is/has and never will be a style of music that caters to the masses or measures itself on facts and figures. It is more music for the outcasts and disenfranchised who have little in common except for a united love of a brand of music that knows no boundaries. But mention The Damned to anyone with even a sniff of knowledge about punk, and you will invariably be met with the same respect and admiration for a band who truly started it all. They were officially the first ever punk band to release a single when they put out New Rose five weeks before the Sex Pistols released Anarchy In The U.K which led to them being the first British punk band to tour the United States. While undergoing several line-up changes in their 35-plus years as a band, there is one that stands out to many as The Damned's classic collection of musicians. Vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible, drummer Rat Scabies and bass player Paul Gray are the quartet widely regarded as the best unit, releasing the albums Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries while the group was together and now, for the first time since 1989, those four will share the stage together when The Damned hit Australia for the final time later this month.HEAVY managed to secure some rare time with Captain Sensible to run through the tour and career of The Damned, with him starting by revealing how he got his stage name."I acquired that name because I was a rabid drunk, actually," he offered, "and not at all sensible. So I got the name thrust upon me and have not been able to shake it off since. I'm getting old these days, so the drinking's taken a back seat, but I've still got the stupid name (laughs). The good news is over 40 years I've learned to play the guitar and the band is sounding quite good at the moment. If you like what The Damned do, we're doing a fair representation of those records that we made back in the 70s and 80s.""It's a great name, The Damned," he continued. "I think the Sex Pistols originally wanted it, but we got it first."We ask if it was hard getting the gang back together so to speak for this tour."No, coz Rat and Paul have been working together on a project with some Americans and me and Dave have been doing The Damned all this time," he replied. "There was a bit of bad blood, that was the only thing that could have got in the way, really. I mean, it was so long ago, I can't remember what we used to argue about (laughs). But it was all sorts of shenanigans, including fisticuffs, attacking each other with empty whisky bottles and stuff like that. As you do in punk rock bands, but we buried the hatchet, and we're getting on okay now. It's interesting to see what they've been doing all these years."In the full interview, Captain Sensible talks more about the tour and what to expect, why he thinks this line-up can be considered as classic, what he expects from his crowds live, demanding the Hard-Ons support the tour, his memories of recording them, the early days of The Damned and the musical climate that gave birth to them, beating the Sex Pistols to releasing the first ever punk single, Sid Vicious wanting to join The Damned as vocalist, the relationship between punk bands in the early days, how competitive the scene was, the age-old belief that punk is all about the attitude rather than the music, how punk music has changed over the years, The Damned's contribution to punk, his top three commandments of punk and more.

Sound, Sobriety and Success with Matt Pinfield

Slim Jim Phantom is the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats known for leading the rockabilly revival, pioneering his stand-up drumming style, and being one of the coolest drummers in rock-n-roll. He shares how the Stray Cats made it big, how he decided to go sober, and how he lives the rockabilly lifestyle. On this episode, Jim talks to Matt about: Growing up on Long Island and spending his time practicing music with his friends How discovering rockabilly music changed his life and influenced his style and sound Forming the Stray Cats and moving to London with hardly any money and no place to stay Gaining buzz by hanging around popular London pubs and earning the attention of big names like Motörhead, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Pretenders, The Damned, and The Rolling Stones Recording an album and discovering it was a hit back in the US Quitting drinking after deciding partying and getting drunk for several nights in a row was a hard way to live Going to meetings all over the world and supporting other peoples' recovery journeys His close friendships with rockers like Lemmy Kilmister and Earl Slick and how real friendships don't rely on substance use Climbing Mount Everest for Hope Love Strength Foundation and his other charitable work The drummers that inspired him and the welcoming community among drummers And More! About Slim Jim Phantom As the legendary drummer for the Stray Cats, Slim Jim Phantom, alongside bandmates Brian Setzer and Lee Rocker, spearheaded the neo-rockabilly movement of the early 80s. With a love for 50's Rock and Roll, the Stray Cats took inspiration from that bygone era and mixed with their youthful energy and aggression to produce the updated hard-edged rockabilly sound that saw them conquer London, Europe and later the U.S., gaining fans among the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Robert Plant along the way. In addition to the Stray Cats, Jim has worked with some of the world's top artists. He has played a part in many successful groups – notably Phantom, Rocker and Slick (featuring long time David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick) which produced two popular albums; and Dead Men Walking, an all-star affair which has boasted original members of The Sex Pistols, The Cult and Big Country among the rotating line-up. Jim also enjoyed a stint playing with the rock-n-roll originator, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even performed in a now-mythological band called The Cheap Dates with acting legend Harry Dean Stanton, one of Jim's longtime pals. Jim has worked on numerous other projects, including his own explosive self-named roots-rock trio, and HeadCat, co-starring Lemmy Kilmister and Danny B. Harvey, and Jim's musical project The Jack Tars, a band co-founded with old friends, and former Dead Men Walking bandmates Captain Sensible and Mike Peters and SJP's long time true rockabilly pal Chris Cheney of Australia's top rockin' band The Living End. He is also deeply committed to charitable works, too: he climbed both Mount Everest and Mount Kilimanjaro for Love Hope Strength Foundation (an organization co-founded by Mike Peters of The Alarm that benefits cancer research).  Jim hosts Rockabilly Rave Up on Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM. He is known as "The Honest Mechanic," where he features new rockabilly acts and the classics. Jim also hosts Slim Jim Phantasy on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio, where he shares his other passion, baseball, and fantasy sports in general.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this show, we discuss the new documentary film written and directed by musician and animal rights advocate Moby. The film is called Punk Rock Vegan Movie and spans a number of decades examining the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk music and animal rights, and how punk ideology is associated with animal rights activism and veganism. The film premiered in January 2023 at the Slamdance Film Festival and is freely available to watch on Moby's YouTube channel. https://moby.com/news/punk-rock-vegan-movie/  The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible.    Slamdance Film Festival wrote about the film: Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. The music we played on the show: No More by Youth of Today https://open.spotify.com/track/0iaFyLheLTw1t7vcD53ywt?si=8be0f6d0a43e481d Cats & Dogs by Gorilla Biscuits https://open.spotify.com/track/0zTfHKPhGwV3Y90EfTztLy?si=69d066d6cff04240 Chicken Squawk by MDC https://open.spotify.com/track/5bhHq796ahqwk70E5fc47M?si=5feea64329fc413e Time Out by Crass  https://open.spotify.com/track/4HWJf7CGgE9Rdhwd0TVM4b?si=ba7cf9c73bef4c50 Please subscribe to 3CR Radical Radio:  3CR relies on our listeners and supporters to remain on-air, on-line and on point. Today I'm joined by Moby to discuss his film ‘Punk Rock Vegan Movie! The new documentary will have its world premiere and be the Opening Night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival on January 20 in Park City, Utah. The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. “'PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists,” said Moby. “After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism." This is a special double episode celebrating "GothVember" combining 44 and 45 where we talk with guests Jenny Watts and Karen Horn Smith of Fossil & Hide simultaneously about their record picks, Phantasmagoria by the Damned and First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. In their own words:I chose the album by the Damned, Phantasmagoria, their 6th album released in July of 1985. This was the first Damned album that was made without the infamous Captain Sensible (although he did help write the song 'Is it a dream') AND the Damned's first goth album. Rat Scabies drumming on this record is nostalgic to me of a theme from an old western. Some would argue that this album is not a tried and true Damned album because of its lack of "punk" attributes but I disagree.  Without Dave Vanian, the Damned would not be the Damned. This is the one and only album by The Damned where Dave Vanian truly shines in all of his dracula glory with it's catchy, non-serious yet very thought out amazing vocals, goth glory and punk nostalgia. If you are a "punk" Damned album fan only, listen to Phantasmagoria about a hundred times and you will eventually get it!  - Jenny WattsI chose First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. The first time I heard the Sisters of Mercy was in 1990 on my local college radio station WFWM. The song was This Corrosion off of their second album Floodland. I was 15 and living in a small mountain town in western MD. My only source for alternative music was the local college radio station and MTV's 120 minutes, which I watched religiously every Sunday night. I remember being totally blown away by This Corrosion and so I begged my mom to drive me two towns over to Camelot music to see if they had any SOM tapes at the store. The only cassette they had was the band's debut album First and Last and Always so I bought it and it changed my 15 year old existence. I couldn't get enough of Andrew Eldritch's deep voice and gloomy lyrics. I love every song on this album and it has been in constant rotation since I first discovered it.  Andrew Eldritch can deny it all he wants (eye roll)  but the Sisters of Mercy hands down defined the goth sound of the 80's and have influenced countless other bands. I had the best time discussing this album! Thanks James, Cassy and Tom! - Karen Horn Smithhttps://www.fossilandhide.com/https://www.instagram.com/fossil_and_hide/

On this very special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast, Tom talks to Rich Wilson, an award winning comedian who has performed sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne Comedy Festival and the New Zealand Comedy Festival. Rich is also the host of the Insane In The Men Brain Podcast where he talks to funny and interesting people about their experiences with mental health. In the last year the podcast has been nominated for an award with Podbible and in 2019 won an award with JOE for best podcast. Rich is the first comedian I've had on Banned Biographies and the reason for that is that I hear him bring up music on his podcast fairly often and his guests don't often indulge him - plus the fact he has a show on Islington Radio called The Tuned Up Time Machine - so, I reached out to ask of he'd like to have a long form conversation about music and he jumped at the chance, which was flattering. In this conversation we talk about his favourite bands, best gigs he's ever been to and played, the best and worst things about music (including how shit Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon is!),  the similarities between musicians and comedians, how society is too clean and safe right now, and so much more as well as a fair bit about his career in comedy. This was such an easy, free-wheeling conversation to have and I'm so grateful to Rich for giving up a couple of hours of his day to shoot the breeze with me about a subject that's clearly dear to both our hearts. If this is your first time listening to Banned Biographies, I do audio documentaries on bands, a lot of which we touch upon in this episode, and I've interviewed musicians in bands such as Sham 69, Ash, The Prodigy, English Dogs, Adam Ant's solo bands, and session musicians for The Selecter, Bow Wow Wow, The Dandy Warhols, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and many more, so be sure to subscribe on your podcast platform of choice and check out the back catalogue. The latest episode of the podcast which asks; if Steve Miller is in a consensual relationship, and keeps away from certain designated areas, and he's not just doing it to show off in front of his mates, is it acceptable in today's society to reach out and grab her? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, sees your panel – who are currently toting huge consignments of heroin around Leeds, swiftly climbing up the class system of Coventry and still getting over the terror of finding someone's undergarments in a sex-grafitti'd public toilet in St Pancras station – on the horns of a dilemma; on one hand, a premium-strength episode of Yellow Hurll-era TOTP. On the other, a World Cup semi-final. The latter doesn't kick off until we're 30 minutes into this episode, but at what point do our heroes break and succumb to the boot-on-ball surrender? And will Al have to watch all of this on a black-and-white portable with a coat hanger for an ariel, or will his Dad slink off to the pub and let him watch it downstairs?Musicwise, it's a game of two halves, with two landmark events occurring and a blizzard of Huge Eighties Things being introduced to us for the first time ever. Imagination are at the top of their flouncy, slinky game. Bruno's Dad lamps someone for ripping a speaker off his cab. Jeffrey Daniel reprises the Starman Moment of the Eighties and makes the Weetabix throw their Doc Martens in a skip. AC/DC get their cannons muffled. But just when you think this could be greatest TOTP episode ever, Jonathan King crashes in like Toni Schumacher on Patrick Battiston in order to curl off another dollop of rubbish American rammel (although he introduces the UK to Mr T. And Deeleyboppers). But then! Out of nowhere come the Good Germans – Trio – who produce one of the greatest TOTP performances ever, followed by Odyssey slamming home one of the greatest singles ever, and all is well. But oh dear, that ‘3' button is about to take a hammering as Bananarama pitch up in big nappies, Bucks Fizz take time out from bombing the Ruhr to cheat on each other, Captain Sensible ducks out of the pub to pretend to be the bastard son Worzel Gummidge and Toyah, and some magicians do their underwhelming pieces to the Steve Miller Band. Everything astoundingly life-affirmingly right and groin-punchingly wrong about early-Eighties TOTP is here, and it gets picked over in the usual manner.Rock Expert David Stubbs and Neil Kulkarni join Al Needham for a dance on the car roof of 1982, veering off on such tangents as being nestled against Mr C's packet, the Line-dancing community of Birmingham, being at a loss about what to say to Jimi Hendrix, wondering what ‘Eagle Farm Today' actually means, and Top Of The Pops getting Bobby Gee to fight some swans in a cage in a desperate attempt to keep watching BBC1. We're taking a look at one band who claimed first time and time again. First UK punk band to put out a single, to put out an album, to tour outside of London, to tour the United States, to reform after a breakup, and to have an official book about them. These guys have continued to grow and adapt and are still playing after 40 years of hard work. It's The Damned.Corrections: At one point I misspoke and refer to Captain Sensible as having a Happy Feet persona when it should be Happy Talk. I don't believe he ever dressed as a dancing penguin, but I wouldn't put it past him either.Website: letstalkpunk.comTwitter: @Lets_talk_punkFacebook: facebook.com/lets-talk-punk-rockE-mail: letstalkpunkrock@gmail.comMerch: teepublic.com/user/let-s-talk-punk-rockPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/letstalkpunkrockDonate: https://ko-fi.com/letstalkpunkrock

Before the Sex Pistols, there was The Damned, but as Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) points out, the pioneers get the arrows, the settlers get the gold.Scabies formed The Damned in 1976 with guitarist Brian James, bass player Captain Sensible, and lead singer Dave Vanian. Their first album, released in 1977, is the punk landmark Damned Damned Damned, which as Scabies explains, took them from opening act to headliners very quickly. That year, they became the first British punk band to tour America. In this episode, Scabies, who was with the band until 1995, recalls the London scene in the dawn of punk, when fisticuffs (sometimes encouraged by Scabies, who would leave his kit to trade blows with audience members) were a byproduct of the energy and excitement. The Damned never tore up the charts, but they left quite a legacy with their look, sound, and performance style. They're still extant, led by Vanian and Sensible, while Scabies has moved on to a number of other projects, including the bands Professor And The Madman, and The Sinclairs.

"Vote for insanity! You know it makes sense."—OMRLP We are joined by Alan "Howling Laud" Hope, the current leader of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party, for an entertaining—yet oddly illuminating—conversation on the history, aims and achievements of the UK's most well-known unconventional political party. In 1999, following the death of the party's founder Screaming Lord Sutch—(who had led the party through its previous incarnations, such as "National Teenage Party" and "Go To Blazes Party")—OMRLP members voted for their new leader, choosing jointly a cat called Cat-Mandu and his owner Alan "Howling Laud" Hope. Although Cat-Mandu died in 2002 and now serves as one of the party's "spiritual leaders", "Howling Laud" proudly continues as the UK's longest-serving party leader.
